Getting rid of the Hands-Up-Defense

Mon Sep 01, 2008 4:53 am

Hi y'all patchers, I'm playing in an online league an I'm strictly playing against human opponents, no PC. But the latest feature of NBA Live 08 is very annoying and makes playing good defense against other humans a lot easier. If you wondered, I'm talking about the Hands-Up-Defense. Simply putting your right analog-stick up all the time and waiting for the opponent to attempt a shot and the defender jumping at the same time is just too simple. In the versions before, you had to anticipate when your opponent would shoot, and now all you have to do is just raise the hands of your player all the time. So my request to all patchers, would it be possible to eliminate Hands-Up-Defense? Is there some way to disable the use of the right analogstick while playing defense, or giving it another function?

Another thing that annoys me is bumping. If you push the button for running fast and shoot, most of the time you will just bump the opponent away, so he can't jump and defend your jumper. Is there also a solution for this problem?

Thanks in advance for all solutions or tips, it would make NBA Live 09 a lot more enjoyable.

:)

Doesn't anybody have an idea? I think more people who are playing in an Online League would be interested in it, because it makes the game a lot more realistic.

It might be something that can be done through aiact.viv editing but you'd need to make sure everyone is using the same modified file otherwise the game will crash (and there's no guarantee it still wouldn't, if it's indeed possible in the first place).

I have a wild guess that to achieve total good defense you must edit the loco.act which can be found in the aiact.viv ..ive tried to edit that part but till now i still cant find a way on how to make the defense as sticky as epoxy  but if anyone that is good in understanding codes he might be able to fix it..

I kind of thought you had the solution to your own problem. If someone is just using the hands up defense in order to defend your shot easier, you use the turbo button to bump them off so they can't defend your jumper.

Ever try a step back prohop before the jumpshot to create space?
What about a fadeaway or even leaning in?
Every try the dunk/layup button to see if the defender ends up fouling you when they attempt the block?

It's not as if I couldn't handle such a defense, of course I could just bump them away every time. But that's not very realistic and I don't want to win games by playing that cheap. If you could get rid of these very "creative" new features everybody in our online league would have the same basis and everybody would have to try to play good defense on their own and get open shots.

I did some research and found out, that NBA Live 08/main/cscripts/xgamefnc.cfg somehow controls the actions on court. There are lines like:
bindaction +DEFJUMP AIACTION_DEF_JUMP_PRESS
bindaction -DEFJUMP
I think these are the lines which control the automatic jumping. But when I remove these lines with editor nothing happens ingame. Even if I remove all the other lines it's still the same.
In the header of the data it says: "// This file defines the internal game function list. It binds
// game function ID's to actual Action ID's. The action ID's are defined
// in action.h

print "Binding internal game funcs..."

Does anybody know, where I can find action.h or has other solutions?

The "action.h" is a source code file, which is used during development of the game. It gets compiled along with other source code files to create the executable(EXE) file.

It's possible that the game doesn't even read the xgamefnc.cfg file, so any changes to it would not make a difference.

actually if someone use a hands up defence, you can use it as your own advantage, because the hands up defence almost 80% make the defender jump all the time, just use a pumpfake, while the jump pull the the shot button and make sure your player go in the direction the defender is.... its about 75% shooting foul all the time,
the other method, if the defender put hands-up defence before you drible the ball, just use the pump-fake and if the jump just hit the turbo button and dribble your tho hoop........

just watch your defender is doing and learn to counter the defender......

As I said, it's not the problem how to play against this kind of defense. But Pumpfaking and driving full speed all the time ist not very fun. Suddenly there are GMs in the league who are playing good defense and winning games because of this "feature" and that's not the sense of it.

the hands up defense is very helpful, coz in 08 its very i mean very hard to defend the paint, the hands up def is your friend when defending the paint.

Any progress on it? We would like to start a new season in our online league and this would be very helpful.

I don't think anyone's been working on it.
