Wood texture tutorial

Postby Angelo on Mon May 12, 2008 11:28 pm

I made this simple tutorial so that people will know on how to make the wood textures in the courts..

Ok to start off the tuto go and open your photoshop..

Create a new layer in Photoshop and fill it with a light brownish, slightly orange color. Try different colours depending on the type of wood grain you want to create.

Goto Filter->Noise->Add Noise and add some noise with the following settings.

Goto Next goto Filter->Blur->MotionBlur and use these settings

Your image should look something likein the above pic. Next take the following steps

* Duplicate the Layer
* Goto Image->Adjustments->Desaturate
* Set the layer's blending mode to soft light and give it a low opacity

Image

Then select the duplicated layer and goto Filter->Artistic->Poster Edges. Use the default settings.

Now the wood is starting to look somewhat realistic, but its not quite a there yet. The problem is that the photoshoped wood is too perfect (more noticeable with a larger sized picture). Real wood has knots, wane and other irregularities in it.

Image

Goto Filter->Liquify

The best way I have found to create the knots with the liquify filter is to take the following steps

1. Select the spot to create the knot
2. Use the nudger tool to create push out the wood texture on both sides of the spot you selected
3. Then use the spiral tool in a slight up down motion to create a realistic knot.

Then you should have your result, a nice realistic wood texture.

Hope this simple tuto can help those people out there in making new textures for their courts..

If you find this helpful please sticky this

:wink:

It's pretty good, but there are no wood tiles, it's just one big piece of wood. Floors are tiled, so you should add that. Also, the texture needs to be seamless. Add those two to the tutorial, and it's a definite sticky.

Ok here instead of making a new tutorial and editing the one that ive posted ill just post a plugin for photoshop that can make the wood texture into a seamless one..

Seamless Workshop plug-in 1.20

FREEWARE

Seamless Workshop plug-in - Seamless Workshop is a freeware Adobe Photoshop compatible plug-in filter. It composes seamless tile from any image. Also, a "surrealistic modification" of a picture can be produced. It is a powerful tool for texture creators, and a helpful toy for graphic designers. An advanced tileable algorithm is used. The unique 'Seamless Blur' effect can be useful for any available tileable pattern.

I did not scan any virus, but anybody who wants the plugin fromt he original site, can get it here -

http://www.redfieldplugins.com/Downloads.htm

Download the "RedfieldPlugins.exe 9 filters package"

When you install, uncheck all the filters except seamless workshop.

Kris, sorry but I am still not stickying this because the wood planks and seamless part should really be in the tutorial. :|
