quick pass option? or bug? xbox 360 version

sometimes, when i pass the ball to an open team-mate he will auto pass to someone else, often causing a back court violation or disregarding what would be an easy layup opportunity to pass the ball away. this is so annoying. is there a way to turn this off or is it a bug? i only push the pass button once and it will pass twice. i have tried this with different controllers with the same results. if there is an option to turn it off, where is it located...??? i have looked through every menu and cant find it. please help!
