There is no quick strike ball handling in Live 08 PS2. It is freestyle dribbling which has been pretty much the same since 2003.

9.) "5 on 5 basketball" is there.

wth does that mean? 10 player online isn't there, and there is nothing new gameplay wise that we aren't familiar with.

8.) The game is now in its 8th year on the platform, you know it's tried and true!

um, yea, no. True 8 games may have come out on the PS2, but Live 08 is not "refined" anymore than any other version. It still has plenty of glitches (ones that we can fix on the PC version) and doesn't do anything different or new.

7.) You KNOW you can sneak a slim PS2 into work. Try doing that with a 360 or PS3.

6.) Is there a better sports controller than the Dual Shock 2?

Ill take the 360 controller over the PS2 one any day now. Yes the Dual Shock is a great controller, but once M$ adapted the PS2 shoulder buttons, game over.

5.) Price! You've gotta love the price!

Retails for US$40. That is 20 bucks less than the NG version. 2k8 on the PS2 is $30.

4.) There will always be someone to play. Two thirds of the country has a PS2!

Yes, but quess what, after PS2 Live 07, no one is going to buy 08. I was the only person at my store to buy the PS2 version....and I sold it back!

3.) Online is FREE on the PS2!

Yay, but again, it doesn't matter if there is no one to play.

1.) KNOW YOUR ROOTS! The "Freestyle Revolution" started on this platform, and has given birth to Quick-Strike Ball Handling!

dammit. There is NO Quick-Strike Ball Handling! Absolutely no new dribble moves have been incorporated in CG Live 08 since 06. Same with the dunk contest, and actually, besides a couple of "poster" dunks in 07 and the closely guarded PG animations, the only new animations we have gotten in the past 3 years are the sig shots and go to moves in 08.



Now I want to make this clear, Live 08 PS2 is a fine game, it is much better than what 07 was and it definitely has potential on the PC version. Therefore I am going to give my top 10 reasons why you should obtain the PC version of NBA Live 08.

10.) No more FSS control. The way FSS moves occur now are much more natural than what they did in 07.
9.) Widescreen support. This isn't confirmed but I doubt they will axe it from the PS2 version when porting it over.
8.) FIBA teams. EA still hasn't updated the rosters for it. I bet by the 2nd week of November someone will have updated those rosters.
7.) Legends. NG doesn't have them.
6.) The new dynasty feature where you can hop into the game in the last couple of minutes and try to get your star player to score 40 points or hold the opposition off for the last 2 minutes of the game.
5.) Jersey Updates. We know how to make 512 jerseys work with this game, and this year hopefully it will catch on with patch makers.
4.) Court Updates. Most likely nothing will change with courts meaning we can take existing courts from 07 and throw them in 08.
3.) Lighting Updates and the imminent Sweat patch. It still baffles me why EA hasn't "stolen" our idea to get players to sweat. But honestly the biggest improvement in visuals attribute to those two patches.
2.) AI Updates. We (pdub) have the ability to make the game play like actual basketball. Gameplay is the most important thing when it comes to the longevity of a game, and thankfully we can finally patch it.

Anyway, I like that numbers two and eight are the same. And that "five-on-five" basketball is apparently a special feature.

I think NG Live is good, I haven't played 2k8 yet so I can't really say if Live 08 is better than that or not. But if you had to choose between 360/PS3 or the PS2 version, I'd say NG is a no brainer and worth the 20 extra bucks.

You've played Live for next generation consoles? Was it on Dreamcast 2? WiiHD? X720? PS4?

Maybe that's the problem, EA is wasting time making their game for next generation consoles, instead of working on a good game for current gen. They've already farmed out last gen.

You were right on plenty of the points. However, the fact about the different engines?

It was more like...

2000-2001 same engine.
2002 different. (can't remember, but it felt different to 2000 and 01 in the short time I played it)
2003 different. (arcadey)
2004-2005 similar.
06 and 07 similar. (graphically very different, gameplay with things such as shooting very different.)

Graphics-wise and gameplay wise.

Either way, I'm going to have a hard choice picking to stay with 05 or get 08.

so i get it..You guys should make youre own game..not on Nba live coz it suks..I now all of here patchmakers can make a 10x better nba game than fuckers EA who thinks only about money and xbox 360,ps3....I U all worked as a team you now would make atleast as good game as EA will make nba live 22 on xbox 720!

I know I've mentioned this before but the only real disappointment for me so far with the PS2 version is that none of the changes to Dynasty Mode made it to that version and the PDA is still there. Other than that, I'm looking forward to what the PC version can offer once we've started modding it.

jonthefon, engine wise 2000 - 2002 ran on the same engine (im not sure about 2000), 2003 and 2004 ran on the same engine, and 2005 - 08 run on basically the same engine. The only thing that overlaps are the animations which haven't changed since 2003 but became encrypted in 07.

Note: All of the below is from observation and analysis, not an actual knowledge of which engines were used.

2000 is the same as 99's engine. 2001 and 2002 are the same, it is the first PS2 engine. 2003 appears to run on the same graphic engine at least as those two, although for PC purposes we can consider it a new engine. Live 2004 and 2005 have the same engine, I am fairly sure on this. 06 and 07 are different. Although with each engine revision they kept more of the previous one.

No im going off of graphics and texture patterns.
I dont know much about the graphics engine before 2003 but 03 and 04 shared the same jersey template and same model formats in the .o file. Nevermind that 2004 was the latest CG version of the game to have facial expression which was very similar to 2003.

05-08 use the ebo / new fsh format. Most ebos are interchangeable between the years meaning we can take 07 ebo files and use them in 2005, and vice-versa. The only things 2005 had that 06/07/08 didnt have are moving shorts and real time shadows.


Gameplay wise 2003 may have had a different engine but the same gameplay engine has been used in 2004 - 08. 06 with the FSS moves are just animation triggers and dont require a new engine. Also 06 had the "posterize" dunks where players can be dunked on. This was just a modification of the bumping-in-mid-air animations from 2004 and 2005.


now to prove you wrong; 2004 and 2005 were not the same engine because 2004 did not use any ebo files nor use an external lighting file. Also 2004 did not use the current AI system with the assignment.act in the aiact.viv and had the same "Render" folder with the custom art option instead of the sgsm folder.
As for thinking 06 and 07 are different...well that can only backed up by 2 facts. Animation files became encrypted in 07, and the frames per second were capped at 30 fps. Besides those two things almost everything texture or model-wise from 07 could be used in some way or form in 06 and vice versa.

You did not really prove me wrong at all. We are not even disagreeing on matters of evidence. Instead, you merely pointed out that I changed from graphic engines to gameplay engines in midpost without informing anyone including myself.

2004 and 2005 appear to have the same gameplay engine, 06 and 07 are different. As I noted, I am going off of observation and analysis of the games, and 2005 and 2004 have similar logic patterns, while 06 and 07 have a vast number of different ones. There is a clear overhaul between 2005 and 06, whereas 2005 and 07 are upgrades of the previous.

Changing of files and even formats may imply an engine change, but does not prove there is one. 2000 and 99 are the same engine clearly, yet they had a number of file format alterations. 06+ likely use the same formats as there would be no reason to spend money developing new ones for outdated dying consoles. 2001, 2003 and 2004 all required tool upgrades in order to get them to work again. My reasoning is clearly flawed, but it appears 2005 may be constructed in a manner similar to 2003.

Either way, 06 and 07 are trash, the "In The Paint" series is stupid, and I am a loser.
