Developers are always saying that things have been built 'from the ground up' for next-gen, but in the case of NBA Live 08 it's actually true. The graphics, animations and AI have all been created from scratch (or to look at it another way, the tech from 11 years of NBA Live titles has just been thrown out the window), and this is going to be the first time NBA Live has run at 60fps.

The result on 360 (the build available for play at the event) is quite incredible. While I certainly don't have a super attuned eye for basketball, even I could see how authentically the play dynamics, and importantly - the physicality, had been captured. This is basketball with hustle and bump, where running plays, setting screens and the post game feel different every time.

The presentation is exceptional in every regard, from the dynamism of the animations, to the way players glance from the man they're marking to the man with the ball and back, to the new camera system which is designed to bring more of a broadcast feel to the game. Also cool is the ESPN on-demand system, which shows videos of the latest NBA results. There's also a real-time news and stats ticker.

You can hold the left bumper to bring up a colour coded breakdown of the areas of the court, showing which zones a player is more likely to hit a shot from. If you take a look at Andrew Bogart's chart, for instance, his only hot zone is right under the hoop, and he's not so bad from just outside and to the left. Just as you'd expect, in other words.

About the only thing missing is five-on-five online play. According to Matt Lafreniere, the game's Associate Producer, the team did some tests, and while it was fun, decided that they wouldn't be able to do it justice this year. In other words, stay tuned.

well, all of the PC versions of live (except for 07 which was capped at 30 fps) could run at 60 fps and the PS2 versions of 03, 04, and 05 all ran at 60 fps. (never played 06 on ps2)
Opinions are my own.
