As far as I know, it's not possible. I believe Jao found a way to remove players so that it would be 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 but the game couldn't get past the opening tip.

correct, and when I did a 5 on 3 game you could actually play the game until one of the 2 "ghost" players either tried inbounding the ball or receiving a pass.

well,most of the times sf players are inbounding,so what you have to do is remove sg and pf,and put the players on positions pg,sf and c

the game automatically fills players from C, PF, SF, SG, PG so if I were playing with 3 players I would be forced to have C PF and SF, no changing that.
So inbounding is a bit tough w/o a PG or a SG since they sometimes take the ball out after shots.
Believe me, if this could be done, it would have been released back when I first tried it.

but you know that you can inbound with any player,just run to the ball with a player which you are controlling

the blank character would attempt to take the ball out of bounds to inbound it....nothing you can do to change that

As Jao already explained, there's no workaround for those problems. I doubt he would have given up the moment he hit a snag while editing.
