Talk about NBA Live 08 here.

gamespot, ign, etc.. reviews are so horrible, is this true?

Postby jv0704 on Wed Oct 10, 2007 7:52 am

Something just does not sound right here.
I have yet to get my Live 08 and waiting to play it when it arrives for PC.
However, it seems all the major review sites make a complete joke out of nba live 08, when the hardcore fans here who plays it, seems to praise them as being a much more improved game compared to 07. Why is this so?

It just does not make sense!

Who is speaking the truth here!

Is Nba Live 08 really that bad?

Why are some blogs like pastapadre he tends to say that NBA LIVE 08 is really fun to play.

I dont' know please help me!

Could it be that, major game review sites are nerds who have not touched a basketball once in their life so they no jack sh!t about basketball so they only give a game 9 or 10 if the shots they put up goes in 99% of the time?

Maybe they are just arcade shoot em up freaks and can't stand the real simulation type of gameplay Live brings to them?

Any hardcore simmers here who plays basketball realistically to the wire and worships their realistic looking statsheet before they go to sleep have anything to say about this?

Well, it is possible for the game to better than Live 07 and still not be very good.

Er, to be clear, Live flirts with arcadish style rather than simulation. At least, if you compare it to NBA 2K8. It seems that the general consensus is that Live 08 is better than last year's version, but still miles behind 2K8 for realism and gameplay.

Well then let me ask this, what defines, realism for you?

For me realism is about, teams that sucks have a hard time to score, and teams that are good have easier time to score.
So if I were using Miami, I'd expect to score much more easier than I were to use Atlanta to score.

And if I were to use guys like Kobe Bryant, I expect him to make shots more easily than any other players in the NBA. Meaning, he should be able to score outside, layups, midrange, and dunks.

I also put a lot of emphasis on midrange game. I expect players who are exceptionally good in midrange, like Duncan/Mike Bibby/Kobe Bryant to wreak complete havoc on the court.

But in 2k, it seems anyone who got the timing down, can make jumpers at will. It is a 3pt fest in that game. Feels like I'm playing some air plane coin-op game.

jv0704: realism for me is how well an NBA video game can simulate real life NBA play. I don't expect guys to make or miss shots, they all do both. I expect players to mimic realistic movement, passing, shooting, as well as have superior AI in setting screens, getting open, going to their positions, and understanding individual and team defense.

I like nba live...but where is the atmosphere of the crowd, where are the fans when someone dunks over someone.....they are all sitting in the dark for the whole game. Just no excitement for me personally. If it's easy to score 3 pointers in 2k8 then just adjust the shot % higher no biggy. I was playing my brother last night 2k8 on 360 and it was an unbelievable game...crowd was into it. The commentary guys were yelling....ohhhh my goodnes that was sick! like really yelling....4th quarter 2 min left you couldn't even here the wistle..fans were cheering waving hands the whole areana was up....that is REALISM -----------------

I will get nba live 08 for PC because I like it on the computer and all the great patch makers live 08 will look Awesome.......I know it!

It really all depends on who was making the review. All people have different opinions on certain things. Like a in all games, some will find it fun to play while some will find it a joke. It will really all depend on you. for example, read review for NBA live 2007 to be more of a task than being a game, but I enjoyed the game.

just my two cents :D

every year the same thing, nba live is that nba live is this, i dont know the different between xbox, ps2 and pc coz i only use pc but its certain the consoles have their own basketball games maybe better than ea. let me tell you something i'm playing the game with full season for 5-6 years now and i'm enjoying it like all the others "who also criticize" the game, nba lives r getting better every year its a fact and since there's no better basketball simulation than nba live for pc some appreciation would be nice who say ea sucks.

I had nba live 06 07 for xbox...also had nba 2k5 2k6 and 2k7.........the nba live games were great games....nothing to complain about..........I like them more than the 2ks

This year however I am not liking nba live....to many glitches....they don't have yi (bucks pf chinese guy lol)....some of the rookies don't have pictures of themselves (belinelli and others) the shot seems out of sync....It doesn't matter if u hold the shot button down or release early...

why do some people nit-picky about stuff like,
"oh kobe's nose is too big, i hate ea"
"oh there is no red stripes on wade's shoes, i hate ea"
"oh his pic is missing, i hate ea"

wtf is up with this?

I am a hardcore NBA fan and a hardcore basketball game fan and for once did I ever really care about such nitpicky things.

Basketball game is not create-a-barbie doll game.

It's all about the game play that matters.

If the gameplay is good then game is good. Even if they spell Kobe Bryan'ts name wrong, if game is good then its good.

Agree on the nitpicking point. Unfortunately, the game is far from good.

First of all what can you expect from a guy that looks kobe's nose in an NBA simulation? What's he gonna do kiss his nose or shoot the ball? "fussy"
If the gameplay is good then game is good? Well it's not, think of some commodore 64 game which has a fine gameplay and compare it with any game in pc that came up after 2000 and dont have remarkable gameplay at all. Would you play commodore or pc? I played live series and i'm going 2 play them as long as i live but hey man so many simple things r missing or buggy in the game which they can add/fix with a snap from their fingers.

I think a little nitpicking is expected in this forum, this is after all a venue for NBA live users to share their opinions. This is also a venue for the admins to gain knowledge from suggestions or complaints from the users to improve the game. I like the NBA live series and have been playing it since NBA live 2003, thought it is far from perfect its still a game, and as such should be enjoyed. :)

oh man , you have told so funny !

and already we have no option to choose 2k8 game for pc, cause
there is no existing game in that name!

in fact they can do , cause bioshock is a 2k game and other games
like this made for PC

Yup. Maybe people are so relieved that Live 08 doesn't totally suck balls that they're giving it a good review. I've been crabby and negative about EA ever since last year's huge disappointment. And unless Live 08 turns out to be stellar, I'm going to continue ragging on these losers.

I've played this damned series for 12 years (NBA Showdown 94 - NBA Live 2007) and some of them weren't too good. But last year's was horrid. I can't count the number of times I wanted to hurl a brick at my monitor because the retard opposing PG threw himself into me and drew a foul.

First of all, it won't kill you to use punctuation marks and caps. Secondly, I have every right to bitch about EA. I've been playing since Lakers vs. Celtics baby and that was in 1989. These developers are total idiots. They don't bother to ask us what they'd done right and what they'd done wrong. If they had seriously kept all the good stuff and tossed the bad through these 18 years, we'd have an incredible bball game.

Stuff like:

1) In game saves
2) Simple interfaces/Windows type menu - one year they tried ghetto graphics menus
3) Rebounding (there was a few years where they got it spot on. then some years where O rebounds were ridiculously easy to get.)
4) Assists (one year, I couldn't get 10 assist/game to save my life - the stupid game didn't count it as an assist if the receiver so much as moved half an inch after receiving ball)
5) Freestyle (introduced in 2003 way too powerful, 2004 - useless. the so-called year of the Defense. They turned offense off completely and hoped that would pass as good defense. 2005/2006 good balance)
6) Separate dunk, shoot, layup buttons - great idea and now it's gone.

Yep. I can't stand the people who focus on itty-bitty things like shoes and socks and headbands and crap. What are you, 10 year olds??? Are Nike Air Zoom flights going to make a piece of sh*t game good?

This doesn't just apply to sports games. I hate those retarded "tuner" street racing games. Ugly-ass Hondas and Nissans being "tricked" out with hideous colors and stuff. Give me a racing game with Ferraris, Lambos, and Maseratis anyday. "Fast and the Furious" killed an entire generation of racing sims.

Enough ranting.

I may be wrong (don't follow Live much at all anymore), but weren't the "hopeful" and good reviews (like from pastapadre) for NBA Live 08 for Xbox360 and PS3 while the bad ones were for the PS2/PC versions (which most of us here play)?

The current gen and next gen games are completely different, and while the next gen game looks like a big upgrade from 07, it doesn't really look the same for us playing on PC.
