Rebuild or Compete? A Season Preview of the Boston Celtics
Image
October 30th, 2011 1:00 PM EST

After a tough playoff loss to the Miami Heat, the Celtics are coming into the new season with many unanswered questions. Last season proved to the organization and its fans that the current team as constructed is unable to take on the new juggernauts of the East. The Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat have become the teams to beat and while they become stronger and gain more experience, the Celtics continue to get older and less athletic. While the Celtics still have young talent in all-star point guard Rajon Rondo and newly acquired Purdue rookies JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore, the aging core of the Boston Big 3 will make it difficult for the Celtics to compete in a league where multiple all-stars have teamed up to form "superteams".

Kevin Garnett has always been the anchor of Boston's stifling defense, but the loss of Kendrick Perkins has taken away one of Boston's biggest competitive edges: their toughness and grit. With Perkins in the middle, teams feared going into the paint and were more likely to settle for a tough jumper rather than put their body on the line for an easy two points. Without a tough presence in the middle, teams began looking to go inside more. The Miami Heat Big 3 are known for their ability to drive into contact to draw fouls and with only Jermaine O'Neal left to man the 5, they took advantage of a new Celtic weakness that was once a strength. The same can be said for young MVP Derrick Rose, who torched the Celtics during a season matchup with dazzling layups and powerful dunks through the Celtic bigs.

Both Paul Pierce and Ray Allen in the past were responsible for carrying the Celtic offense. They were both dynamic and skilled enough inside the paint and from the perimeter to put up spectacular point output in any given game. With another year gone, one can only wonder how much Pierce and Ray can carry an offense until they'll need more help from their supporting cast. While the Celtic bench has been solid in the past, it's only a matter of time before the Celtics need another legitimate scoring threat from either the bench or in the starting lineup to carry them when the shots aren't falling.

Celtic GM Danny Ainge has done an excellent job salary cap wise setting up for the future. The Celtics can look at next year's free agency with the confidence that they can be a major player in it. The Celtics will have all but Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce off of their books in the 2012-2013 season, which will leave them enough room to offer a max contract to any player they feel will help out their rebuilding process. Celtic fans will not be able to help themselves from watching how the Dwight Howard drama in Orlando plays out, praying that the superstar center will somehow fall into their laps in the next free agency period.

This may be Danny AInge's biggest challenge yet. These next two years will shape the entire future of the Boston Celtic organization. WIll they successfully rebuild their team and become a contender within the next few years or will the Celtic fanbase be forced to toil in another 20 years of mediocrity? We can only sit back and watch it unfold.

After much criticism on his mediocre mid-range shooting, Rajon Rondo has been working to prove his doubters wrong.

"I've been listening to the criticism over the offseason.", said Rajon Rondo after a Celtics scrimmage. "It's fueled me over the offseason. It's made me want to get better."

Rondo's teammates have praised his attitude and his willingness to get better. "He's doing what a tough player should do. He's taking what the media has said about him
and is using it to make himself a better player", remarked Kevin Garnett. "If he becomes a better shooter, then I don't know how the rest of the league will stop him."

According to sources, Coach Doc Rivers is looking to transition the role of team leader to Rondo this season. "He's so talented and he hasn't even hit his prime yet. We're looking
to hand him the keys to the offense this year and see what he can do with it."

Jeff Green has successful heart surgery
Image
October 31st, 2011 3:30 PM EST

Jeff Green has reportedly had successfully surgery on his heart.

The Celtics organization detected an aortic aneurysm in preseason and were successful in getting Jeff Green the health treatment he needed
to continue his playing career. He will be forced to miss the entire 2012-2013 season as he recovers from the surgery.

His contract with the Boston Celtics was voided for medical reasons but he is still looking forward to joining the team next year in free agency.
"I'm definitely looking forward to resigning next year." said Jeff Green to reporters earlier today. "I feel that I still have unfinished business here in Boston.
I still want to prove that I'm a player that can contribute to this franchise."

Jeff Green will become a unrestricted free agent this year and won't retain his bird rights.

Pierce's big night leads C's to victory in home opener

Paul Pierce's 40 point game leads the Celtics to a 1-0 start to the season

Preview|Team Stats | Cavalier Notables | Celtic Notables

Boston, November 2nd (AP) - The Boston Celtics have started their season with a winning record thanks to a 40 point night from Celtic forward Paul Pierce.

Pierce scored 40 points on 18-25 from the field. The Cavaliers lack of talent at the small forward spot allowed Pierce to take advantage of every mismatch he had. Whether it was the outside shot or
a fade away from the post, Pierce found a way to score over every defender the Cavaliers threw at him.

The Celtics also got valuable contributions from forward Kevin Garnett as well as guard Rajon Rondo. Garnett was both solid on the offensive side of the court as well as the defensive side. His work
on the boards allowed the Celtics to outrebound the Cavaliers 40 to 37. Rajon Rondo ended the game with 10 points and 12 assists. His double double was a key contributor early in the game as it allowed
Pierce to find his stroke early from three.

The Cavaliers kept the game close but were unable to close out the game in the second half. Forward Alonzo Gee led Cleveland with 23 points as well as 6 rebounds and 4 assists. His ability to drive to
the rim allowed the Cavs to get the Celtic bigs in early foul trouble. Rookie Kyrie Irving also had a solid NBA debut, putting up 20 points. He was unable to find the touch from three, ending the game
0-3 from downtown.

"He had the hot hand and we looked to feed him early", commented Doc Rivers on Paul Pierce. "His size was an advantage for us. They didn't really have anyone who could body him up in the post."

Coach Byron Scott felt confident about his team's performance tonight, labeling it as a learning experience. "We played against a tough opponent and held our own. If we continue to put 100% effort
into every game, we can really sneak up on some teams."

The Celtics will have a one game break before heading out to Georgia to face Joe Johnson and the Atlanta Hawks on Friday.

Thanks! For the most part I'll be looking to compete but if injuries start to get out of hand, I'll probably just rebuild.

Nice win against my cavs! I noticed Varejao and Parker both have much darker skin than in real life. I think I read somewhere that it was related to the new patch. I haven't played 2k in awhile i'll have to check to see if that happened to me too.

I'm liking this!!!! Great info on the team, and nice press reports too!! The presentation is top-notch. I assume your holding onto Rondo as your franchise cornerstone! What are your plans for improving the roster in the future? You need a Center, will you try and get D-12??

Celtics survive 4th quarter thriller to go on two game winning streak

Image
KG brought intensity to the final minutes of the game and fueled his team's struggle to hold the lead.

Preview|Team Stats |Celtic Notables | Hawk Notables

Boston, November 4th (AP) - The Boston Celtics managed to hold their lead in the 4th quarter to secure a win against the Hawks and get their first winning streak of the new season.

Once again, Paul Pierce led the team in scoring. His 24 points along with his 8 rebounds allowed the Celtics to get a lead early in the first quarter as well as spark the team in the third when the baskets weren't falling. When the Hawks looked to throw more defensive pressure at him, he could count on Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to carry the scoring load with 16 and 22 points respectively.

The Celtics were in total control in the first half. With the starters out looking for rest, Boston could count on their bench to hold the lead and even extend it. Celtic swingman Mickael Pietrus had 9 points and 5 rebounds off the bench while also shooting 3-4 from three. He torched the Hawks from deep and forced the defense to collapse to the three point line whenever the ball came to him. Rookie forward Jajuan Johnson also showed that he could also contribute with a solid 5 points off the bench. While only in limited minutes, he had a chance to showcase his talents to the team and show that he can one day be a key contributor for it.

While the Celtics controlled the first half, the Hawks clearly controlled the second half. Hawk guard Joe Johnson used his size advantage against Ray Allen to hurt the Celtics in the post. With the Celtic defense looking to stop Johnson, young point guard Jeff Teague and veteran swingman Tracy McGrady began to show their offensive abilities. Jeff Teague scored 17 points and dished 6 assists while Tracy McGrady put up 12 points off of 5-12 shooting from the field. While the Hawks were clearly playing some great basketball, it eventually wasn't enough as the Celtics held on to close out the game in the 4th quarter.

"It was a tough game but we pulled it out." said Doc Rivers after the game. "That's what you get with a veteran team like ours. We excel in games like these where we have to grind it out to get the win."

"It's an emotionally draining loss. We have to just put this one behind us." explained Hawks coach Larry Drew after the loss. "It's a lot harder to let a game slip away then it is to get blown out. We'll need to bounce back in our next game to get our confidence back."

The Celtics are heading out to Indiana tomorrow night in their back-to-back against the Pacers. They look to extend their win streak to three.

Other Headlines
- J.J. Hickson signs 4 year extension with the Kings.
- Jerebko to have surgery on Torn Meniscus; Will be out indefinitely.
- Camby out 2-4 weeks with Strained Achilles.
- Despite reports, Lakers aren't shopping World Peace.

Actually, its the global I'm using that has the darker skin tones. I'm using SeanJohn's shadow mod and it makes some of the lighter skin tones look darker.

Thanks! So far Pietrus has been big for me off the bench. Usually I can count on him making huge three's for me off the bench.

My plan is to hold on to Rondo and sign any big free agent that comes along. I will try to go after Howard, but in 2k he has a tendency to resign regardless of how good or bad the Magic play. If he's there, I'll throw money at him and hope for the best, but I have a feeling he won't be around by that time.

Also, sorry for the lack of updates so far. I caught the flu last week and didn't get the chance to update. Expect to see me try and make up for that in the next updates.

Celtics easily defeat Pacers; Increase win streak to three

Image
After two tough games against the Cavs and Hawks, the Celtics finally get an easy win in Indiana.

Preview|Team Stats |Celtic Notables | Pacer Notables

Boston, November 5th (AP) - After two close games against the Cavaliers and Hawks, the Celtics were relieved to finally get an easy one against the Pacers in Indiana.

For the third game in a row, Paul Pierce led his team in scoring with 21 points in 30 minutes of playing time. Pierce was able to get significant rest at the end of the game because of the lead the Celtics were able to get in the 4th against the Pacers. It allowed them to get some well deserved rest on a tough back-to-back.

Kevin Garnett had another solid game with 14 points and 5 rebounds. He didn't have to contribute much to the win thanks to the play of starting PF Brandon Bass and JaJuan Johnson from the bench. Brandon Bass had 13 points and 8 rebounds while Johnson had 12 points off of 6-10 shooting from the field. Ray Allen produced 13 points and 6 rebounds along with shooting 3-5 from deep. His ability to make shots from the three point line allowed his team to pull away early in the game and never look back.

The Pacers were unable to get much contributions from their starters. Indiana forward Danny Granger shot only 6-18 from the field and 2-5 from three. His game seemed notably off and it reflected on the team as a whole. Roy Hibbert put up a solid double double with 10 points and rebounds as well as 3 blocks. While he played solid, the weak shooting from Danny Granger and starting guard Paul George made it hard for the Pacers to keep up.

Pacer coach Frank Vogel still found promise in the loss. "These are the games that we can learn from. The Celtics played great defense against us and we didn't react accordingly. These are the experiences we'll need to learn from to make it deep into the playoffs."

"It feels great to get an easy win for a change." commented Paul Pierce after the game. "After a tough game in Atlanta, we needed to put this one away early."

"I'm finally starting to feel confident out there. I'm learning from our veterans and am starting to contribute to the team." said JaJuan Johnson on his performance. "I understand what coach expects of me. He wants me to contribute without making too many mistakes. I think I'm starting to learn the pace of the NBA and how to make a difference for this team."

The Celtics get a three day break before heading home to Boston. They will take on the Charlotte Bobcats and try to extend the winning streak to four.

Rondo twists ankle against Pacers; Listed as day-to-day.

Celtic point guard Rajon Rondo twisted his ankle on Saturday against the Indiana Pacers.

While trainer Ed Lacerte isn't expecting Rondo to miss any time, he is expecting his minutes to be limited by coach Doc Rivers. He is still expected to start against the Bobcats on Wednesday.

"I'll be limiting his minutes but we'll let him play through the injury." Doc Rivers said. "He's a tough kid. I don't think he would have sat through the injury even if I had told him to. That's just the kind of
competitor Rondo is."

Blowout in Boston leads to another Celtic win; Winning streak up to four.

Boston, November 9th (AP) - The three day break before tonight's game gave the Celtics the energy to blowout the Bobcats and extend their win streak to four.

Ray Allen was on fire from deep. He shot 7-14 from three and ended the game with 27 points as well as 6 rebounds. The Bobcats were completely unable to stop him and it led to a lopsided score at the end of the first. Paul Pierce has been clearly drinking from the same fountain of youth Steve Nash found years ago as he has been having a fantastic season. His 26 points as well as 4 steals kept Charlotte from even coming close.

Rajon Rondo didn't look fazed by his ankle injury as he scored 8 points and dished 13 assists. His passing was phenomenal and was the key factor in getting the Big 3 key shots early in the game. Kevin Garnett was just as dominate as the other members of his starting lineup. His near double double of 16 points and 8 rebounds was just salt in the wound for a Bobcat team that looked completely outmatched.

Charlotte was unable to stop the Celtic offense in any way and it cost them the game. Corey Maggette was the leading scorer with 17 points and 9 rebounds. He was only able to shoot 6-16 from the field and was clearly bothered by the Celtics elite defensive effort. Gerald Henderson's 14 points and Byron Mullen's double double were the only positives for the team as poor shooting seemed to be the coming from every player on the roster.

Paul Silas was noticeably disgusted by his team's performance tonight. "We gave up. We came out there and just gave up. I saw very little effort out of this team tonight. We're professionals and I know we're better than tonight."

"It feels great being home!" yelled Garnett as the clock went off in the fourth. "There's nothing better than having our fans behind us during games. It takes our play to another level." said Ray Allen after the game. The Celtics were pumped to be back home and it showed in their performance.

"It doesn't really bother me at all. I kind of forget about it when I start playing." remarked Rajon Rondo on his ankle injury. "I think its the adrenaline. It's easy to forget about minor injuries in a game because you forget about the pain and are more focused on getting the win."

The Celtics get another day off before the Clippers come to town on Friday. They look to beat Lob City and extend their win streak to five.

Celtic veterans win in Veteran's day showdown with Clippers

Paul Pierce's 20 points and 7 rebounds only one of many contributions from Celtic veterans.

Preview|Team Stats | Clipper Notables | Celtic Notables

Boston, November 11th (AP) - The Boston Celtics have started off the season on a groove and tonight's game versus Blake Griffin and the Clippers proved to be no different.

Paul Pierce and Ray Allen both had 20 points off of efficient shooting nights. With 4-6 shooting from three, Ray Allen was able to put pressure on guard Mo Williams and force him to work hard on the defensive end to defend him. KG also had a solid outing with 13 points and 6 rebounds. He only shot 4-13 from the field but he played strong defense in the paint on Blake Griffin as well as DeAndre Jordan. Rajon Rondo also put up a double double with 10 points and 11 assists. His defense on Chris Paul was vital to the Celtics victory as well as his playmaking abilities at the point.

It wasn't just the Big 4 contributing for Boston tonight. Brandon Bass had his own double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. He also shot a very efficient 60% from mid-range, punishing Los Angeles whenever they decided to back off of him to add more pressure to another player. His ability to make shots from the field has been a huge boost to this Celtic team, as its given them the spacing they need to get their veterans to score.

It was an all around terrible shooting night for the Clippers. Mo Williams shot an abysmal 4-21 from the field and 0-8 from three. His inability to hit an open shot as well as his willingness to keep jacking up shots kept his team behind the entire game. Caron Butler led the team in points with his 20 points and 8 rebounds. While Williams was content taking shots from the perimeter, Butler forced the issue by attacking the paint and getting easy shots. Chris Paul also had an off night. In 42 minutes of game time, he only managed to score 10 points and dish 3 assists. Blake Griffin played limited minutes and its unknown if this is because of fatigue or an unknown injury.

"Our job tonight was to make the game not fun. This team likes to throw oops and make the highlight reel." commented Kevin Garnett after the game. "We forced them to grind it out and they struggled because of it."

"I had an off night. It hurt our team." said Chris Paul. "Games like this happen. I know I'll bounce back."

"We had the same mentality our team used to have 20 years ago." according to Doc Rivers. "No dunks and no layups. If they are going to beat us, its going to be from outside. I'm proud of the way the strategy worked."

The Celtics are heading out to Ohio for their rematch against the Cleveland Cavaliers. They look to increase their win streak despite being on a back-to-back.

Rookie point guard Kyrie Irving will miss the next few weeks because of a hamstring injury he suffered against the Sacremento Kings on Wednesday.

Kyrie Irving is currently averaging 14 points and 4 assists and is in the running for the Rookie of the Year award.

"it's frustrating. My team needs me and I can't contribute." commented Irving "I just have to sit out a bit and get healthy. I don't want to do anything to re injure myself in the meantime.

Irving will miss tonight's game with the Celtics. While the Cavalier trainers don't have an exact date, he is expected to be back within 1-2 weeks.

After a tearful retirement only a year ago, Yao Ming is looking to return to the league.

"This is the healthiest I've ever felt. I'm ready to play in the NBA once again." said Yao in an interview. "I've kept myself in shape over the summer in case I did decide to come back and I feel like I'm ready."

According to interviews, he is looking to either play in a starting role or even a role player off the bench.

Yao Ming first retired because of a foot injury that plagued him during his time in Houston. He is reportedly close to a deal with a team already, although no specifics have been confirmed yet.

^ Honestly, I'm starting to wonder if this difficulty setting is too easy. I have a tough back-to-back coming up after this Cleveland game against Miami/Orlando. If I end up winning both of those, I'll probably move up to Superstar/HoF and look for sliders.

No Irving leads to 40 point loss in Cleveland

Image
Paul Pierce scored 25 points and hit 5 three pointers to blow out Cavaliers

Preview|Team Stats | Celtic Notables | Cavalier Notables

Boston, November 12th (AP) - The Boston Celtics took advantage of the Cavalier's loss of Kyrie Irving by blowing them out in Cleveland.

Paul Pierce led the Celtics in scoring. He scored 25 points and shot 5-8 from three. The entire Celtic team caught fire from three as Mikael Pietrus, Ray Allen, and Keyon Dooling all shot a combined 63% from deep.
Brandon Bass had himself another double double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. His mid-range shot was excellent tonight as he shot 9-14 from the field.

Kevin Garnett also had a double double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. He also had an amazing defensive night, blocking 6 shots. His defense kept the Cavaliers from getting to the rim and forced them to take poor shots from the field and from three. The Celtics were hitting shots from everywhere, and it was partially thanks to the passing of Rajon Rondo. He ended the game with 2 points and 16 assists. While he didn't look to score, he did feed the ball to any teammate he found open and it led to a lopsided score for the entire game.

The Cavaliers just couldn't find their rhythm the entire game. They shot a combined 22-64 from the field and 6-16 from three. It seemed like nobody could score for them and with the stifling Celtic defense on them at all times, they fell behind quickly. Antawn Jamison is the only Cavalier who managed to make it to double digits in points. He scored 16 points on only 5-16 shooting from the field. The only upside to his play was his shooting from three, shooting 3-5 from there.

Cavaliers coach Byron Scott was infuriated with his team's play. "Injury or no injury, you have to come out and play each game with 100% effort. Just because we have a player out is no excuse to not show any effort. I expect better from this team in the future."

"It was hard to watch this game. It made me feel like putting on a jersey and playing anyway." commented Kyrie Irving after the game, who watched the game from the bench in a suit.

"We got the job done tonight." said Paul Pierce after the game "We have to always play hard, no matter who we face. It's good to get a win like this and get some rest at the end of games."

The Celtics get three days off before facing the defending Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat on Wednesday.
