NBA Stuns with Fairytale-Like Story with Undrafted PG
Bill Simmons"I think he'll do good," said Dwayne Wade to a reporter during the Heat's first day of training camp. The 'He' Wade is referring to is 18 year old point guard Caine Green, who is the surprise story of the league this season. He might quite possibly just be the biggest surprise the NBA has ever seen.
Why? Well there are a few reasons. For one, he's only 18 years old which throws out the rule that a player must attend at least one year of college to be eligible to participate in the NBA draft, meaning a player has to be at least 19 to enter the league. That brings us to the fact that he did not even play a full year of college basketball. In fact, the way in which Green even began playing college ball seems like a joke. Attending Ohio State's Mansfield, Ohio campus, Green was noticed by some staff from the main Columbus, Ohio campus when they were visiting the campus on business. What were they so impressed by? His dunking ability at only 5'10. Not his basketball IQ or court vision. Not his ability to play lock-down defense. But his ability to dunk the ball when no one is guarding him. At first glance this story seems like a fairy tale, but once everything is taken into consideration, it seems ridiculous... right?
Green supposedly working out for an undisclosed teamYes, until you get to the part of Green's college 'career,' if you could call it that. In the (barely) 2 months that he played with Ohio State, he averaged 16 points per game, 7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game, as well as 4.6 rebounds, which is impressive for his height. Green enjoyed increasing fame as well as some resentment for the fact that he just walked on as the starting point guard.
A lot of things don't make sense here, but for me the biggest question seems to be the least obvious to everyone else - why didn't he finish out his season at Ohio State? Although he was a walk-on and wouldn't have completed the entire year that makes it necessary for him to be eligible for the draft according to the NBA's own rules, he still could have finished out the season and been drafted properly like all the other rookies in the 2011 season. What it all comes down to is hype. The NBA bypassed all of these rules so they could have this fairy tale-like story to turn heads and get people talking.
The fact is that Caine Green was brought into the NBA, bypassing the draft and all other legit means of entering the league, for hype. The NBA found a gem of a story and they are running with it. The only question now is which team will lure Green to sign with them. Look for that to be the hottest topic of before the season kicks off.
