Grizzlies Hoping To Start Season Strong

After finishing 10th in the West last year and missing out on what would have been their 4th appearance in the playoffs, the Grizzlies are hoping to have better luck this year.

Starters Mike Conley, OJ Mayo, Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, and Marc Gasol will all be returning this season. The Grizzlies have also acquired guard/forward Tony Allen out of free agency this offseason.

In this year’s draft, the Grizzlies took guard Xavier Henry with their 12th pick overall. Henry has the potential to develop into a strong player, and will help take the load off OJ Mayo.

Venezuelan point guard Greivis Vasquez was taken with the 28th overall. Standing at 6 foot 6, Vasquez also has a size advantage over most other point guards.

With the 25th pick, the Grizzlies selected Dominique Jones, who was quickly traded to Dallas for cash considerations

Are playing on 2k11?

If you want ideas, i suggest taking a look at the more successful stories in the section. I personally like Martti's and Axel's game recap styles the best. They are simple and appealing at the same time. I made my recap style basically a hybrid of the two.

Game 1: Washington Wizards vs Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies shot great during the entire game (58 percent), yet it was still not enough to win. The Washington Wizards take the game tonight, pulling ahead in the final seconds against the Memphis Grizzlies with a final score of 113-109. It was anyone’s game until Nick Young (Wizards) hit a 3 pointer with 3 seconds left, making it a four point game.
The Wizards were shooting terribly going into the game (33 percent), yet Rashard Lewis was making everything. He went into halftime with 16 points, and ended the game with 28.
Both teams went into the final quarter tied up at 83. Rudy Gay was leading the way for the Grizzlies with 24 points. The Wizards began to shoot better and better, and ended the game shooting 53 percent from the field.
“Ya know, it was just a real tough loss,” says OJ Mayo (Grizzlies), “I’m real upset that we didn’t come away with the win. I mean, really, c’mon guys, we was playin’ the Wizards.”
Rudy Gay finished with 28 points in tonight’s loss. OJ Mayo also contributed with 20 points, and Zach Randolph had 19.
Rashard Lewis (Wizards) was appointed the player of the game award due to his 28 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.

INJURY REPORT:In the 4th Quarter, after a ferocious block by Zach Randolph, Andray Blatche tripped on his own untied shoes, and fell on his back. He’ll be out for 2-4 weeks with a bad case of back spasms.

“It’s a shame that Andray never learned to tie his shoes. If he did, he could still be ballin’ with us now,” says John Wall about Blatche’s injury.

OFF THE BENCH: Mustafa Shakur gave the Wizards some unexpected support with 10 points and 2 steals.

Top Players: Wizards
Rashard Lewis, 28 min, 28 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks, 1 turnover
Nick Young, 32 min, 21 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers
John Wall, 32 min, 16 points, 6 rebounds, 13 assists, 1 steal, 0 blocks, 3 turnovers

Shane Battier upset in Memphis?

A source from within the Memphis Grizzlies tell us that some players are already upset about a lack of playing time, only a single game into the regular season. The main player who is upset is forward Shane Battier. Battier was the 6th pick in the 2001 draft, drafted by Memphis. He played with the team for 5 seasons before heading to Houston, where he played for 4 seasons. This is his first season back in Memphis. Battier has averaged 10 points over his career so far, along with 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
Other names involved in the rumors are Xavier Henry, who was just recently drafted, and Ishmael Smith, who was taken out of the D-League earlier this year.

The Memphis Grizzlies lost their second game of the season today against the Dallas Mavericks, with a score of 117-116. With 1 second left on the clock, SG Jason Terry (Mavericks) made a 3 pointer to put them up a point. The Grizzlies took the ball in at half-court, but Rudy Gay (Grizzlies) was not able to capitalize on his 3 point attempt. Burying their heads in their hands at such a close game, the Memphis Grizzlies returned to the locker room with their 2nd straight loss.

The Mavericks played well all game. They held a lead going into the 2nd quarter, but lost it, only to win the game at the very last second. Jason Terry and Caron Butler both had good games, scoring 19 and 22 respectively. Dirk Nowitzki was a bit of a letdown, with just 12 points, but he helped out defensively with 11 rebounds and 2 steals. Jason Kidd also had a double-double, with 18 points and 10 assists.

The Grizzlies struggled the entire game with getting their shots to go in. Rudy Gay didn’t have a problem though. He shot 50 percent, and finished the game with 29 points. OJ Mayo had 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Zach Randolph managed to get a double-double with his 16 points and 11 rebounds. Michael Conley came close with his 7 points and 10 assists.

Top Performances: Mavericks
Caron Butler: 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal
Jason Terry: 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers
Jason Kidd: 18 points, 4 rebounds, 10 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover
Dirk Nowitzki: 12 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover

Top Performances: Grizzlies
Rudy Gay: 29 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover
OJ Mayo: 17 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists,
Zach Randolph: 16 points, 11 rebounds, 1 block, 2 turnovers
Michael Conley: 7 points, 2 rebounds, 10 assists

Buzzer Beater by Conley nets Grizzlies first win

The Oklahoma City Thunder led the entire game, thanks to former Rookie of the year Kevin Durant (39 points). But then, in the 4th quarter, the Grizzlies began going crazy from behind the 3 point line. Michael Conley (Grizzlies) put the team on his back. In the last 2 minutes of play he hit 4 from behind the 3 point line. He was the player of the game, with his 30 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals.

Rudy Gay (22), Zach Randolph (19), and OJ Mayo (19), also helped out to get the win. Despite being horribly out rebounded (Grizzlies: 30 v. Thunder: 49), the Grizzlies still managed to take the game. Perhaps it was thanks to their steals (18), and the Thunder’s turnovers (19). Marc Gasol couldn’t manage to get it going offensively, (3 points), but he grabbed 8 rebounds and contributed with 4 steals and 2 blocks.

Kevin Durant managed to get a double-double (39 points, 10 rebounds), and Russell Westbrook almost had a triple-double, with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 13 assists. Serge Ibaka was a big help with 12 points and 8 rebounds. As mentioned before, turnovers were a big problem. Russell Westbrook alone had 6, and Nate Robinson also gave up the ball 5 times.

OFF THE BENCH: Tony Allen (Grizzlies) contributed greatly, with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and an assist.
Top Performances: Grizzlies
Michael Conley: 33 min, 30 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals, 2 turnovers
Rudy Gay: 29 min, 22 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover
Zach Randolph: 30 min, 19 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers
OJ Mayo: 29 min, 19 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals

Top Performances: Thunder
Kevin Durant: 33 min, 39 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers
James Harden: 28 min, 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers
Russell Westbrook: 30 min, 8 points, 7 rebounds, 13 assists, 2 steals, 6 turnovers
Serge Ibaka: 28 min, 12 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover

Raptors trade with Grizzlies

On the 20th, the Toronto Raptors traded their 2011 1st round pick, and forward Linas Kleiza for the Grizzlies Shane Battier, and their 2011 2nd round pick.

Many think that Battier being unhappy was not the only reason for him being traded. He was averaging less than 4 points a game for the team. Linas Kleiza has a lot of room to grow. Also, the Raptors are not the strongest team, and the Grizzlies now have their draft pick, which will most likely be top 5 or top 10.

Grizzlies win in 2nd victory of the season

Image

What, after the 1st quarter appeared to be a blowout, transformed into more as the Golden State Warriors came back in the 3rd quarter. It still was not enough however, and the Memphis Grizzlies won the game 117-109.

Rudy Gay (Grizzlies) was the player of the game with 27 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. He was aided by OJ Mayo (23 points), Marc Gasol (16), and Zach Randolph (16).

On the Warriors side, Stephen Curry had a great game even though he couldn’t get it going in the first half, scoring just 6 points. He ended the game with 23 points and 14 assists. Monta Ellis scored 20, and also had 11 rebounds. David Lee had 18 points and 9 rebounds, just missing out on a double-double.

The Warriors made 47 of their 100 shots, while the Grizzlies made 44 of their 89. The Grizzlies weren’t as strong as usual from 3 point range, shooting just 39 percent. The Warriors were terrible, making just 3 of 20 (15 percent).

Fouls were a problem for the Warriors, who gathered 17 of them, sending Memphis to the line 28 times. Memphis wasn’t much better, with 13 fouls. Memphis made 20/28 of their free throws, while Golden State made 12 0f 19.

OFF THE BENCH: Jeremy Lin (Warriors) was recently taken out of free agency, and he’s already having a good effect on this team. He had 18 points, and contributed defensively with a steal.

Top Performances: Memphis
Rudy Gay: 29 min, 27 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 3 turnovers
OJ Mayo: 31 min, 23 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover
Marc Gasol: 30 min, 16 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers

Top Performances: Golden State
Stephen Curry: 31 min, 23 points, 3 rebounds, 14 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers
Monta Ellis: 36 min, 20 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers
David Lee: 31 min, 18 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 turnover
Notable Mention: Jeremy Lin played 7 minutes, and scored 18 points.

Grizzlies get comeback win against Minnesota

Image

This game may very well be the comeback of the year in the NBA. The Grizzlies trailed the entire game, and entered the fourth quarter down by 13, at 92- 79. Suddenly, they began dominating the game. They scored an even 50 points in the fourth, and won the game 129- 121.

Rudy Gay had possibly the best game of his career. He was the player of the match, and it was no surprise. He may have been the reason the Grizzlies won, with 50 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block.

However, he didn’t do it all by himself. Zach Randolph (19 points, 10 assists) and Michael Conley (19 points, 17 assists), both had double-doubles.

For the Timberwolves, Wesley Johnson set a new career high in points with 27. Michael Beasley had 25 points, and Johnny Flynn had 21. Kevin Love was nowhere to be seen offensively (5 points), but he did contribute a lot in the rebounding department (18 boards).

“You know, I just had a great game. I’m hoping that I can continue this level of play for the rest of the season,” says Rudy Gay.

INJURY REPORT: Zach Randolph seems to be very dangerous this season. Martell Webster went for a dunk, but happened to ram into Randolph. Webster strained his Achilles, and will be out for 2-4 weeks.

OFF THE BENCH: Luke Ridnour scored 15 points and had 5 assists in 15 minutes of play.

Top Performances: Grizzlies
Rudy Gay: 31 min, 50 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover
Zach Randolph: 29 min, 19 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers
Michael Conley: 29 min, 19 points, 3 rebounds, 17 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover
Top Performances: Timberwolves
Wesley Johnson: 32 min, 27 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover
Michael Beasley: 30 min, 25 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers
Jonny Flynn: 31 min, 21 points, 3 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers

Honorable Mention:
Kevin Love: 18 rebounds
Marc Gasol: 5 blocks

Team Records Broken: Two Grizzlies records were broken this game, both by Rudy Gay. He set new team-high points, with 50, and also set the record for 3 pointers made with 14.

NBA Records Broken: Rudy Gay also set the NBA record for 3 pointers made in a game with 14.

Rudy Gay named player of the week

After scoring 50 points in the Grizzlies last game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Rudy Gay was named the Western Conference player of the week for November 21-27. Deron Williams was named the Eastern Conference’s player for the 2nd week in a row.
"I'm real proud of being the player of the week. I'm hoping I can keep this up in the future, " Says Gay

Chris Bosh unhappy in Miami?
Image

There are rumors that one of the stars of the Miami Heat, Chris Bosh, is unhappy with his current situation. The former Raptors star left Toronto this off-season to become a member of Miami's Big 3 (LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Bosh). In his 5 games played so far, Bosh has averaged 11 points, and 8 rebounds.

There are also rumors that Bosh has been in an argument with Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, and that is the cause for his unhappiness. More news is to follow.

Grizzlies lose to Kings

It was close the entire game, but the Grizzlies couldn’t defeat the Kings, losing 126-119. Marcus Thornton (Kings) was the player of the match. He had 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.

The Kings shot great (60 percent, compared to Memphis’s 50). Also, while the Grizzlies traveled to the line 11 times, Sacramento took 23 free-throws. They also out rebounded Memphis by 12 boards (40-28). The Kings offense was moving nicely, and everything was perfect. They scored an astounding 70 points in the paint, leading many to wonder where Memphis’s defense was.

One thing Memphis did do well was shoot the three ball. Out of their 46 attempts, they made 21 (45 percent).

Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, and Michael Conley had good performances. OJ Mayo also contributed, along with Tony Allen and Marc Gasol.

On the Kings side, Tyreke Evans, Marcus Thornton, Beno Udrih, and Jason Thompson had great games.

OFF THE BENCH: Omri Casspi had a great game with 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in 12 minutes of play.

TOP PERFORMANCES: KINGS
Marcus Thornton: 28 min, 24 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover
Tyreke Evans: 29 min, 26 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists
