Balls to the Wall in Montreal - Temporary Hiatus

Tue Aug 24, 2010 10:57 am

Hi all. It's been a while since I've been around here, but I'm back with a new association. I'm really enjoying this one, so hopefully it stays. It'll be pretty low key, no flash or frills, and will exist mostly as a personal reference point. Though, a little bit of back story will be provided. It starts in the 2009 offseason.

Edit: forgot to give my association details. I'll be simming most games, and using "coach mode" for the non-sim games. 12 min quarters. Default rosters (with some tweaks). My own sliders. No CPU trading prior to Dec. 15 of each year (to avoid them trading free agents). I will only make trades the CPU proposes to me or for players on the trading block. As an expansion franchise, I will be limiting myself to the expansion salary cup rules. Therefor, I will have a self-imposed salary cap of 66% of the league salary cap in the 1st season, and 75% in the 2nd.

Edit #2: There's been a slight change of plans regarding how I'm approaching this dynasty. Turns out that my roster was too shitty to play the games on coach mode, as we were struggling to put up 60 points against even the worst teams. So, I reloaded my beginning of season save, and decided to sim out the whole 1st season, so that I'd at least have a high draft pick on my roster.

DYNASTY SETTINGS

Rosters:
Default, with some tweaks
Sliders: Based on Kova's game sliders
Difficulty: Superstar
Quarter Length: 12 minutes

NBA ANNOUNCES DISSOLUTION OF BOBCATS FRANCHISE

The NBA released a statement today notifying the dissolution of the Charlotte Bobcats franchise. Owner Michael Jordan filed for personal bankruptcy earlier in the summer (sources close to Jordan cite gambling debts as the cause of his financial troubles) and folded the team. In most cases, the league would step in and take control of the franchise, but according to the press release the league as a whole lost "approximately $350 million" in the 08-09 season. That, coupled with the uncertain economic climate and the potential 2011 lockout, caused the league to fold the franchise. A dispersal draft of Charlotte's former players is planned.

NBA DISPERSAL DRAFT RESULTS

The NBA held a dispersal draft of former Charlotte Bobcats players. Every non-playoff team gets 1 selection, beginning with the team that finished with the worst record in the 08-09 season, and going in ascending order to the team with the best record. Here are the results:

1. Sacramento Kings: D.J. Augustin, PG
2. Washington Wizards: Tyson Chandler, C
3. Los Angeles Clippers: Gerald Wallace, SF
4. Oklahoma City Thunder: Nazr Mohammed, C
5. Memphis Grizzlies: Raymond Felton, PG
6. Minnesota Timberwolves: Boris Diaw, SF
7. Golden State Warriors: Gerald Henderson, SG
8. New York Knicks: Raja Bell, SG
9. Toronto Raptors: Derrick Brown, SF
10. Milwaukee Bucks: forfeit
11. New Jersey Nets: forfeit
12. Indiana Pacers: forfeit
13. Phoenix Suns: forfeit

NBA ANNOUNCES NEW CANADIAN CLUB, DIVISIONAL RE-ALIGNMENT

With the folding of the Charlotte Bobcats, the NBA was left with an unbalanced, 29-team league. Prepared to play out the 2009-10 season as such, the league was stunned when a group of Montreal investors quickly put together a proposal for a Montreal team to join in time for the start of the season. The NBA, desperate for the $300 million expansion fee, granted the group's request, and the Montreal Monarchs were born.

The addition of another east coast team, however, necessitated a drastic divisional restructuring. The new league alignment now looks like this:

    EASTERN CONFERENCE

    ATLANTIC DIVISION
    Philadelphia 76ers
    Boston Celtics
    New York Knicks
    New Jersey Nets
    Washington Wizards

    CENTRAL DIVISION
    Cleveland Cavaliers
    Montreal Monarchs
    Indiana Pacers
    Detroit Pistons
    Toronto Raptors

    SOUTHEAST DIVISION
    Memphis Grizzlies
    Atlanta Hawks
    Miami Heat
    New Orleans Hornets
    Orlando Magic

    WESTERN CONFERENCE

    NORTHWEST DIVISION
    Milwaukee Bucks
    Chicago Bulls
    Utah Jazz
    Denver Nuggets
    Minnesota Timberwolves

    PACIFIC DIVISION
    Los Angeles Clippers
    Sacramento Kings
    Los Angeles Lakers
    Portland Trailblazers
    Golden State Warriors

    SOUTHWEST DIVISION
    Dallas Mavericks
    Houston Rockets
    San Antonio Spurs
    Phoenix Suns
    Oklahoma City Thunder

An expansion draft is scheduled, as well as a press conference to unveil the new team.

Jerseys aren't turrible. (Y) Roster on the other hand... I do like the re-organizing of the divisions.

Oh, the roster is very bad. I'll be lucky to get 10 wins this year.

Jerseys, well...2k's options for custom team jerseys are somewhat wanting.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. There's been a slight change of plans regarding how I'm approaching this dynasty. Turns out that my roster was too shitty to play the games on coach mode, as we were struggling to put up 60 points against even the worst teams. So, I reloaded my beginning of season save, and decided to sim out the whole 1st season, so that I'd at least have a high draft pick on my roster. So you can expect the 1st season recap up soon.

SEASON AWARDS

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

Dwight Howard, C (ORL) - 21.8 PPG/13.1 RPG/0.9 APG/1.1 SPG/3.1 BPG/58% FG/14% 3PT/53% FT
Runners-up: LeBron James (CLE), Tim Duncan (SAS), Carmelo Anthony (DEN), Kobe Bryant (LAL)

Having carried Orlando to the best record in the East, Dwight Howard staked his claim to the 2009-10 MVP trophy. Howard led the league in blocked shots, was third in rebounding, and was first among centers in points. His dominating defensive presence was key to Orlando's ability to shut down their opponents, and there's not a more feared presence in the paint than that of Dwight Howard.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Tyreke Evans, G-F (SAC) - 13.5 PPG/2.9 RPG/3.9 APG/1.8 SPG/0.7 BPG/43% FG/34% 3PT/73% FT
Runners-up: Stephen Curry (GSW), Johnny Flynn (MIN), Blake Griffin (LAC), Brandon Jennings (MIL)

Tyreke Evans didn't shoot the ball very well in his rookie year. He didn't lead the rookie class in points, or rebounds, or assists. There were flashier names to choose from, players with more gaudy numbers. What stuck out about Evans, though, was his presence. Whenever he was on the court he was making things happen for the Kings, be it the pass the leads to the assist, rotating quickly to cover a shooter, pushing the ball up the court, or wreaking havoc in the passing lanes. Evans pushed a surprising Kings squad into the playoffs, and for that he rightfully gets the RoY nod.

6TH MAN OF THE YEAR
Marcus Camby, C-F (LAC) - 6.3 PPG/8.7 RPG/1.1 APG/0.3 SPG/1.9 BPG/46% FG/0% 3PT/67% FT
Runners-up: Rafer Alston (NJN), Rip Hamilton (DET), Mike Miller (WAS), Andres Nocioni (SAC)

Marcus Camby adds a 6th Man award to his trophy case (which already includes a defensive player of the year). He was a stabilizing force on the resurgent Clippers all season long, anchoring the defense, mentoring Blake Griffin, and generally doing anything he was asked.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Dwight Howard, C (ORL) - see MVP
Runners-up: Tim Duncan (SAS), Kevin Garnett (BOS), Josh Smith (ATL), T. Thomas (CHI)

MOST IMROVED PLAYER
Antonio Daniels, G (MTL-POR) - 9.4 PPG/2.0 RPG/5.5 APG/0.8 SPG/0.2 BPG/45% FG/43% 3PT/78% FT
Runners-up: Nazr Mohammed (OKC), Anthony Randolph (GSW), Lou Williams (PHI), Jason Thompson (SAC)

Antonio Daniels had a career year - in the final season of his career. Despite his stated intention to retire at season's end, voters couldn't bring themselves to ignore Daniels' late-career resurrection. As a member of the Monarchs, Daniels helped lead the expansion franchise past all expectations. Later traded to Portland, Daniels filled in nicely for an injured Brandon Roy down the stretch, helping the Blazers win the Pacific division.

Great recap of the first season. Are you going to use real draftees (Wall and such) for the 2010 draft? Either way, love the moves you made. Bayless is one of my favorites in the game.

You should have just gone with Antoine Walker. That would have made an interesting story  Great season recap (Y)

Thanks everyone.

Lamrock, real draftees are in. I'm using Kova's 2010 draft class (and his 2011 class as well). The Monarchs did pretty good in the draft, too.

Thierry, I was thinking about it, but then I realized for it to be worthwhile it would be much more effort than I'm willing to put in.

Also, I noticed I forgot to put my own team's transactions in the recaps, so those are there now.

Congrats on getting Wall in the draft. Definitely lucked out with the top 2 teams passing on him. OKC really fucked up their pick. Monarchs didn't make much of a splash in free agency, but you got a solid backcourt now with Wall and Afflalo plus Bayless as the combo guard sixth man.

Thanks Lamrock. I'm really stoked on my roster now. Off the top of my head (haven't played in a couple of days) I'm pretty sure my rotation now looks like this:

PG - Wall/Bayless/Watson
SG - Afflalo/Rush
SF - Outlaw/Balkman
PF - Warrick/Wilcox/Gani Lawal (2nd round pick)
C - Okur/Przybilla/Koufus/Brezec (oddest named center quartet in NBA history?)

I like the looks of that. Should be fun, but challenging. we're gonna be pushing the ball all the time, no matter what.

If Afflalo and Rush don't work out at the 2, you can always move Bayless there as well. Looking forward to see what you can do with them.
