NEW YORK. In the franchise's first game ever, the Manhattan Hoosiers lost against the rebuilding Minnesota Timberwolves. Right off the start, the new team had its problems in the post where neither Sean Williams nor Hilton Armstrong could effectively defend the inside-skilled Al Jefferson. After 2 minutes, the Wolves were off to a quick 8-0 run. The Hoosiers needed to find their consistency and Stephon Marbury sealed with a free throw the franchise's first point in the team history. A quick steal that lead to a fast break finished by Sean Williams gave hope to home fans, but with 2 buckets from Corey Brewer the Timberwolves managed to secure their first-quarter-lead.
This type of game continued in the second quarter, as the Wolves controlled the Hoosiers to slow set play in the halfcourt while getting many steals to build their lead. Again Al Jefferson dominated in the paint.
After half-time, it seemed that the Hoosiers could work their way back into the game, as Wally Sczcerbiak aka. "Wally World" heated up and scored 8 Hoosiers' points in a row. Nontheless, the Wolves controlled the pace of the game by using the matchup Brewer – Sczcerbiak. The differences in the quality of both opponents became obvious in that time.
Late in the fourth, the Hoosiers lost entirely their rhythm and had no to stop Ramon Sessions, who scored 11 points in 3 minutes. After the game, Coach Rodriguez said, that "we played a fairly good first game and I see very much room to improve, good chances are there for the future!"
