Tuesday 27th October 2009 @ The Rose Garden Arena, Portland, OR

Houston Rockets [0-0] @ Portland Trailblazers [0-0]

Starting Line-ups

Houston
G | Aaron Brooks | 77 Overall
G-F | Trevor Ariza | 78 Overall
F | Shane Battier | 75 Overall
F | Luis Scola | 73 Overall
F-C | Chuck Hayes | 68 Overall

Portland
G | Andre Miller | 78 Overall
G | Steve Blake | 72 Overall
G-F | Brandon Roy | 88 Overall
F-C | LaMarcus Aldridge | 78 Overall
C | Greg Oden | 74 Overall

Image
The match-up of Roy and Ariza will be one to keep an eye on

The Rockets are bound to struggle in their season opener with both of their stars (Yao and McGrady) out with injuries, so off-season acquisition Trevor Ariza will have to take on the task of being the star of the team. The Blazers come into this season with the strongest team on paper they have had for years and big things are expected from them this upcoming season. A win to start this 09/10 season is crucial for both teams, as they will want to be getting out to a quick start in the very tough Western Conference. This should be a highly entertaining and possibly high scoring match as we kick off the season on opening night.

Good luck against the Yao/T-Mac less Rockets. You can definitely grab a win.

I look forward to the franchise story, it is well formatted, considered and will attract quiet an audience. You have clearly put some effort into this, and I will be watching with intent to see how the Blazers manage the Andre Miller situation. How good Greg Oden really is and whether Rudy Fernandez can capture the form that makes him one of the most potent bench scorers in the NBA. Should be a gem, best of luck Tomcat. :)

Blazers survive Houston comeback to win Season opener

First Quarter:
As was stated in the preview in the lead up to this game, Trevor Ariza was expected to be the go to man right from the start. Well he didn't disappoint, scoring the first basket of the match to give the Rockets a 2 point lead. However, Portland quickly tightened up on D and went on an 11-2 scoring run (7 points of which were scored by Brandon Roy) which was capped off by a Brandon Roy 3-pointer. Rookie Patty Mills got his first career NBA minutes when he was subbed into the game at PG with 5:03 remaining in the 1st quarter. From here on the Blazers controlled the entire first quarter, led by Brandon Roy who played every minute of the quarter and knocked down an unbelievable 19 points. The work off the bench was not un-noticed either with Travis Outlaw doing some great work on the defensive end including 2 blocks and a defensive rebound. There wasn't really anything positive the Rockets could've taken out of this opening quarter except a highlight reel near half court buzzer beater to end the quarter by Carl Landry to cut the deficit back to 13 at the 1st quarter break, 15-28.

Second Quarter:
The Rockets started the second quarter almost the same as the first, getting the first bucket. But instead of Ariza it was Battier and instead of a 2 point jumper it was a 3, cutting the deficit to 10. But on the next possession, the Blazers hit right back with a 3 of their own from Travis Outlaw who was playing great off the bench. Australian rookie David Andersen scored his first NBA points on a bank hook to cut the lead back to 22-33. Greg Oden was owning the paint on the offensive end in the latter half of the quarter, jamming it down almost everytime he recieved the ball down low. The Blazers continued to control the game throughout the remainder of the half, holding the Rockets to just 37 points on 40% FG shooting. The score at half time, Rockets 37-52 Blazers.

Player At The Half:
Brandon Roy | 21 Points | 3 Assists | 2 Rebounds

Third Quarter:
The Rockets again opened the quarter with a basket to cut the lead to 13. The first half of the 3rd quarter went pretty much basket for basket with the big men doing the work for the Blazers and some sweet jump shooting from the Rockets guards. Some poor work boxing out by the Rockets allowed the Blazers to get 2 offensive rebounds on the same possession which lead to a Steve Blake 3-pointer to extend the margin to 16, 71-55. Teams just can't win games in the NBA when giving up offensive rebounds that easily. The game continued to go basket for basket until the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter, Rockets 63-77 Blazers. Some Rockets fans had already left the building, even though logically the Rockets could still come back and win this one.

Fourth Quarter:
The Rockets began the final term on a 4-0 run by a free throw made and a 3-pointer from Ariza who has shot lights out from behind the arc all game. The lead was cut to 10. However Portland is a much classier team than to lose their cool over this and regained their composure to hold onto an 11 point lead with 5:09 remaining in the match. In the immediate next possession for the Rockets a nicely drew out play by Rick Adelman set up Aaron Brooks for the open 3 to cut the lead to 8. A missed short range jumper by Oden on the other end turned into a mid range Brooks jumper for the Rockets to cut the lead to 6. Now was the time for the Blazers to regain their composure and attempt to close out this game in the remaining 4 minutes, but the Rockets kept coming and their run would not stop, with another unanswered bucket, this time by Ariza to cut the lead to 4, 80-84 with just under 4 minutes remaining in the match. And again by Brooks! now 82-84. The scoring run was finally stopped by a 3 point play by Oden to extend the lead back out to 5 with 3:09 remaining. Another basket by Brooks and a turnover by Aldridge gave the Rockets back the ball only 3 points behind. Clutch defense by the Blazers with a block by Oden gave them the ball with a 3 point lead with 1:40 remaining and a chance to make it tough for the Rockets to complete their comeback. However another turnover off a bad pass by Oden gave the Rockets the ball right back. A clutch fade-away by Battier with 1:24 left on the clock cut the lead to 1 and made it anyone's game. A shooting foul sent Greg Oden to the line where he hit 2 clutch free throws to give the Blazers a 3 point lead once again. A short floater by Brooks again cut the lead back to 1 with 42.4 seconds remaining. Greg Oden missed a mid range jumper with 18 seconds to go but a huge offensive rebound by Aldridge forced Houston to intentionally foul Steve Blake with 11 seconds remaining. Blake cooly stepped up to the line and hit the first. The second was a brick but another offensive rebound, this time by Oden, forced the Rockets again to foul. This time Andre Miller would go to the line, who did not disappoint, giving Portland a 4 point lead with 5.3 remaining on the clock and Houston calling a timeout. A four point play is the only chance for Houston now but instead they went for the quick 2 point, which was dropped by Scola, but no time remaining gave the Blazers a 2 point win. Poor rebounding and poor clock management in the end gives Portland a win on opening night in their home opener, 92-90

Excellent layout, well thought out analysis, competent writing and great wrap-up. Overall a neat section, you have an extremely strong foundation to form your franchise story, and I hope you the utmost success. I think the end of game wrap-up was short but gave the audience (well in particular me) the basic idea or plot if you may, of how the game went and why the game was won/lost, in this case won. Furthermore, the pictures and highlight of the game make the feature more aesthetically pleasing and therefore, easier to read and stay focused. Congrats (Y)

Haha. You see he's under the name "3PK_Pistons"? Well that's another account he made so he could get on here and ask to be allowed to be back on here under his old user name. He is allowed back now (posting under the name "3PK" again), so we'll be seeing a lot more of him (Y) . You can check out what happened over at the mod requests thread. And don't worry we're not gonna start up another Photoshop thread haha.

Cool, another Blazers association, nice to see you contributing too TomCat! Lucky win against Houston, and wow Landry released that ball pretty quick. That was a nice write up too, I like how you've broken up the recap into separate quarters. :)

Lightning Strike, Hey thanks for the positive feedback mate. Yeah I thought I might start a story on here, because it keeps me more interested in playing it as well. When Landry made that shot it made me laugh a fair bit lol.

So when are we going to see a story from you up here? :)

Around the league: Tuesday, October 27th 2009

Good recaps. Nice win. Perkin's also injured in mine and the Celtics have problems without him.

hova-, Thanks. Yeah I noticed that he was injured in yours as well. I wouldn't mind playing the Celtics while he's still injured. I play them on January 22 which is around the time he comes back. Should be interesting..

TomCat wrote:Lightning Strike, Hey thanks for the positive feedback mate. Yeah I thought I might start a story on here, because it keeps me more interested in playing it as well. When Landry made that shot it made me laugh a fair bit lol.

So when are we going to see a story from you up here? :)

You're welcome mate, and I agree with you, frequently visiting this section always motivates me to play 2K9, and I'll be getting 2K10 for Christmas. :) As for a story from me, I'm not too sure mate, I would love to say sometime around this month but I'll just have to see for now.

Nice win from my Celtics, but ouch Perkin's out for up to 8 weeks?! :(
