The
Altair Alexander
Story
In Brooklyn, NY on February 23, 1984, a small child was found left by the alter at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. A servant of the church found the boy and took him to the nurses quarters. The nurses assumed the small child was 2 months old... and gave him a birthday of December 23rd, 1983, and the name, Altair Chris Alexander. Three weeks later, Altair was taken by social services and put into a children’s center.
At the age of 3, Altair was sent to foster care, along with 2 older boys. One of the older boys was 6 years old and named Jake Johnson. The other was an 11 year old, named Marcus Riggs. They were put into the custody of the Gardner family. John Gardner was a postal worker for the state of NY. Lisa Gardner was a Nurse at Brooklyn Medical Clinic.
The Gardner’s placed Marcus into public school, while Jake and Altair went to private school. In 1990, Marcus was accelerating in Junior Varsity Basketball as a Shooting Guard / Small Forward. Standing at 6'5 by the time he was 15, every High School in the NY city area was interested in enrolling him. In 1991, he enrolled at Jefferson High School, Brooklyn, NY. Jefferson was known for producing top notch college athletes. Marcus quickly became the starting Shooting Guard and was dominating the opposition. He began to teach Altair basketball from a young age. Marcus and Altair had a very close relationship, and as many said, “They were closer than brother’s”.
Jake was a bit of the “odd man out” between the brothers. He was well liked by the other two, but for some reason, Jake was never into the same things Marcus and Altair were into. He would often go to the basketball court his brother’s just to watch and talk with people on the sidelines. Jake was also the brother to get into the most trouble. When he was 13 years old, he was kicked out of Private school for bringing a switch blade to school. He was in and out of Juvenile detention throughout his teenage years for fighting, stealing, and selling drugs.
Altair pretty much grew up under Marcus. He played basketball everyday with Marcus and he did well in school. Like his brother Jake however, he got kicked out off private school when he was 11 for smoking marijuana on school grounds. This wasn’t necessarily a punishment, as Altair would attend the same middle school and Junior high as his brother Marcus. Altair became a basketball star and was planning on going to Jefferson High School for basketball his freshman year. Unfortunately he never got the chance.
In 1997, Marcus was playing basketball for St. Johns University in New York. He was a junior stand out and it looked like he was on the way to the NBA. After a Pre-Season NIT win against Syracuse at Madison Square Garden, Marcus was traveling to his girlfriends house. On his way there he stopped by a local Brooklyn corner store to get something to drink. While he was in the store a masked robber entered the store and shot Marcus in the back of the head while he was trying to get his wallet out by the front counter. The Gardner family was devastated by the incident, especially Altair. The Gardner family would move to Washington state 1 year later, right after Jake went to prison, charged for grand theft auto and drug possession with intent to sell.
After the Gardner’s arrived in Seattle Washington, John Gardner began a Brewery Business named Pacific Sail. This business would grow greatly over time. Altair enrolled at Garfield HS and played 4 years on the Varsity Basketball team. He was a star from his freshman year, taking over the PG position and becoming a HS All-American 3 of his 4 years there. He played along side another All-American named Brandon Roy. The 2 developed a close friendship and led Garfield HS to a State Semi Final in 2002. After Roy left to the University of Washington in 2003, the team was solely on Altair’s shoulders. He averaged a state best, 34.6 PPG, 12.2 APG, and 8.4 RPG, and he led Garfield HS to the State Championship Title. Altair was considering joining Roy at the University of Washington, but family issues pushed him to declare for the NBA. In 2001, Altair’s foster mother Lisa had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. One week after the state championship in 2002, she lost he life. Altair was hit hard, but not as hard as his foster father John. John quickly became depressed and his brewing company was beginning to go down the drain.
In June of 2003, Altair was predicted a top-10 draft pick. His girlfriend, Laura Penny was pregnant with his child and his father desperately need some money to keep his business afloat. The NBA seemed like Altair’s only option. Altair had workouts with numerous teams, but none were eagerly awaiting him as much as the Portland Trailblazers. The Trailblazers began talks with other teams in order to trade up and draft Altair in the top 5. Altair’s stock was as high as it was going to get... but he would never get drafted, or see an NBA floor.
One week prior to the NBA draft, Altair was at a party when he got a call from his Girlfriend. She was going into labor and was being taken to the hospital. Altair rushed out to his car and began to drive towards the hospital. He was so excited and overwhelmed at the same time, he missed a red light and ran into another car. Two of the people he hit were seriously injured, and one was confined to a wheel chair. Altair only suffered minor injuries, but was tested and proved to be over the states legal alcohol limit for a minor (.02). One month later, he was charged with DUI, Reckless Driving in the 1st Degree, and Vehicular Assault in the 1st Degree. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison, but could get out on parol in 2. Instead of going to prison, Altair’s attorney cut a deal with the prosecutors and he would serve his time in the United States Army on a 5 year contract.
While in the Army, Altair’s endurance and ability to think quickly got him into and passed Ranger School. Altair would serve 5 years with the 3/75th Ranger Regiment and he would deploy 4 times, twice to Afghanistan, once to Somalia and once to Iraq. He got out on an honorable discharge in the Spring of 2009, and he planned on going home and working at his foster fathers brewery in Portland Oregon. Only problem was, the brewery in Portland was un-operational, and his foster father had over-dosed on drugs in 2007, leaving everything he had to the brewery’s co-owner, Wolf Reed. The only thing John Gardner left Altair was the Brewery in Portland... which used to be the highest producing one they had... but after John’s death, Wolf shut it down.
Not all was lost for Altair though.... shortly after getting out of the Military, his close HS friend Brandon Roy called him and was offering him a summer league invite to play with a team. Altair took the invite and was off to the Vegas Summer League’s.
