Altair Alexander
Story

In Brooklyn, NY on February 23, 1984, a small child was found left by the alter at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. A servant of the church found the boy and took him to the nurses quarters. The nurses assumed the small child was 2 months old... and gave him a birthday of December 23rd, 1983, and the name, Altair Chris Alexander. Three weeks later, Altair was taken by social services and put into a children’s center.

At the age of 3, Altair was sent to foster care, along with 2 older boys. One of the older boys was 6 years old and named Jake Johnson. The other was an 11 year old, named Marcus Riggs. They were put into the custody of the Gardner family. John Gardner was a postal worker for the state of NY. Lisa Gardner was a Nurse at Brooklyn Medical Clinic.

The Gardner’s placed Marcus into public school, while Jake and Altair went to private school. In 1990, Marcus was accelerating in Junior Varsity Basketball as a Shooting Guard / Small Forward. Standing at 6'5 by the time he was 15, every High School in the NY city area was interested in enrolling him. In 1991, he enrolled at Jefferson High School, Brooklyn, NY. Jefferson was known for producing top notch college athletes. Marcus quickly became the starting Shooting Guard and was dominating the opposition. He began to teach Altair basketball from a young age. Marcus and Altair had a very close relationship, and as many said, “They were closer than brother’s”.

Jake was a bit of the “odd man out” between the brothers. He was well liked by the other two, but for some reason, Jake was never into the same things Marcus and Altair were into. He would often go to the basketball court his brother’s just to watch and talk with people on the sidelines. Jake was also the brother to get into the most trouble. When he was 13 years old, he was kicked out of Private school for bringing a switch blade to school. He was in and out of Juvenile detention throughout his teenage years for fighting, stealing, and selling drugs.

Altair pretty much grew up under Marcus. He played basketball everyday with Marcus and he did well in school. Like his brother Jake however, he got kicked out off private school when he was 11 for smoking marijuana on school grounds. This wasn’t necessarily a punishment, as Altair would attend the same middle school and Junior high as his brother Marcus. Altair became a basketball star and was planning on going to Jefferson High School for basketball his freshman year. Unfortunately he never got the chance.

In 1997, Marcus was playing basketball for St. Johns University in New York. He was a junior stand out and it looked like he was on the way to the NBA. After a Pre-Season NIT win against Syracuse at Madison Square Garden, Marcus was traveling to his girlfriends house. On his way there he stopped by a local Brooklyn corner store to get something to drink. While he was in the store a masked robber entered the store and shot Marcus in the back of the head while he was trying to get his wallet out by the front counter. The Gardner family was devastated by the incident, especially Altair. The Gardner family would move to Washington state 1 year later, right after Jake went to prison, charged for grand theft auto and drug possession with intent to sell.

After the Gardner’s arrived in Seattle Washington, John Gardner began a Brewery Business named Pacific Sail. This business would grow greatly over time. Altair enrolled at Garfield HS and played 4 years on the Varsity Basketball team. He was a star from his freshman year, taking over the PG position and becoming a HS All-American 3 of his 4 years there. He played along side another All-American named Brandon Roy. The 2 developed a close friendship and led Garfield HS to a State Semi Final in 2002. After Roy left to the University of Washington in 2003, the team was solely on Altair’s shoulders. He averaged a state best, 34.6 PPG, 12.2 APG, and 8.4 RPG, and he led Garfield HS to the State Championship Title. Altair was considering joining Roy at the University of Washington, but family issues pushed him to declare for the NBA. In 2001, Altair’s foster mother Lisa had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. One week after the state championship in 2002, she lost he life. Altair was hit hard, but not as hard as his foster father John. John quickly became depressed and his brewing company was beginning to go down the drain.

In June of 2003, Altair was predicted a top-10 draft pick. His girlfriend, Laura Penny was pregnant with his child and his father desperately need some money to keep his business afloat. The NBA seemed like Altair’s only option. Altair had workouts with numerous teams, but none were eagerly awaiting him as much as the Portland Trailblazers. The Trailblazers began talks with other teams in order to trade up and draft Altair in the top 5. Altair’s stock was as high as it was going to get... but he would never get drafted, or see an NBA floor.

One week prior to the NBA draft, Altair was at a party when he got a call from his Girlfriend. She was going into labor and was being taken to the hospital. Altair rushed out to his car and began to drive towards the hospital. He was so excited and overwhelmed at the same time, he missed a red light and ran into another car. Two of the people he hit were seriously injured, and one was confined to a wheel chair. Altair only suffered minor injuries, but was tested and proved to be over the states legal alcohol limit for a minor (.02). One month later, he was charged with DUI, Reckless Driving in the 1st Degree, and Vehicular Assault in the 1st Degree. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison, but could get out on parol in 2. Instead of going to prison, Altair’s attorney cut a deal with the prosecutors and he would serve his time in the United States Army on a 5 year contract.

While in the Army, Altair’s endurance and ability to think quickly got him into and passed Ranger School. Altair would serve 5 years with the 3/75th Ranger Regiment and he would deploy 4 times, twice to Afghanistan, once to Somalia and once to Iraq. He got out on an honorable discharge in the Spring of 2009, and he planned on going home and working at his foster fathers brewery in Portland Oregon. Only problem was, the brewery in Portland was un-operational, and his foster father had over-dosed on drugs in 2007, leaving everything he had to the brewery’s co-owner, Wolf Reed. The only thing John Gardner left Altair was the Brewery in Portland... which used to be the highest producing one they had... but after John’s death, Wolf shut it down.

Not all was lost for Altair though.... shortly after getting out of the Military, his close HS friend Brandon Roy called him and was offering him a summer league invite to play with a team. Altair took the invite and was off to the Vegas Summer League’s.

Finally a my player story. Loved the video introduction. Interesting choice making the player 25, considering most people (like me) probably made theirs 19. Thought it was kind of funny having the war game footage in the vid.

Great start, keep it up. I'm assuming your a PG, right? Get Oden the ball! (Y)

1080 The Zone (ESPN Portland)

Henry : I want to switch things up a bit, and talk about another story that just surfaced today. Reports out right now state that Brandon Roy has pulled some strings through close management connections to open up a spot in the NBA Summer League's for a player by the name of Altair Alexander. If you have forgotten about the story from 2003, Alexander was a HS start up at Roy's former HS, Garfield Senior High. He had declared for the NBA Draft and the Trailblazers were gunning to take him in the 1st round. Obviously that did not happen; instead a week before the draft Alexander made a stupid mistake by driving under the influence and crashing into another vehicle, seriously injuring 2 others in the accident. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison, but due to a plea agreement with the state, he never went to prison and joined the US Army on a 5 year term.

The reason I bring this up is because it seems Alexander will be taking a spot that would have been given to another player, whether college or a young pro player. I like what Roy is doing for his close friend, and more than that a veteran of the Armed Services..... but I have to wonder, this guy hasn't played ball in over 5 years. He was a hair away from going to prison for 3 years and out of the 2 other people involved in the car accident, 1 is in a wheel chair for the rest of her life. My question is to you and to everyone listening, does this guy by the merits of being a veteran and a close friend to Roy justify him taking a spot on a NBA Summer League roster?

Chuck : I hear what your saying and I am going to say no, its not justified. I support our veteran community and I support the armed services, but this guy, as of right now, does not deserve to be on a NBA Summer League roster. I mean, this guy made a mistake and I agree he has served his time for that honorably in the US Military, but come one..... he hasn't played basketball competitively in over 5 years. I think he lost his chance at his basketball career when he made that dumb mistake of getting behind the wheel under the influence.

Henry : I agree.... and I believe the biggest mistake was him drinking under-age. I mean, what was he thinking 1 week before the Draft? I appreciate what he has done for our country in the US Military... but im sorry, I think that spot in the Summer League should be going to a credited college or pro player who has stayed out of trouble, and earned his spot.

Chuck : Just got a message in from Jake in St.Johns; he say's : " I remember watching this kid in HS. He was amazing to watch at the time, but I have to believe he has lost a couple of steps. Why doesn't he go back to school and work on a real career... his NBA dream died back in '03 "

Henry : I agree Jake, good e-mail. I have another one here from Tim in Gresham, it reads : " I love turn around success story's. As a former Army Ranger, I know first hand what kind of discipline and commitment it takes to be one. I hope the last 5 years have helped him see the mistake he made back in '03, and I hope he has learned from it and is more of a abiding citizen. With that said, I think it will be hard for him to go from carrying a gun to dribbling a basketball again. He might want to consider staying in the Military for a life long career. I hope the best for him though, good luck."

Chuck : Well I think we are on a similar page Tim. It would be a nice success story.... but the odd's of that happening are very low. We have to remember, the NBA is a business, and there are several players looking to break into it. Alexander had his chance and he messed it up and I think he has to live with that. Its just not right for him to take a spot that should be going to a player that has not messed up and has not committed crimes that would jeopardize their career.

Yeah... I figure I would try something different. He is a PG... but might be used as a SG as well. I would love to get Oden the ball.... but there are no guarantee I will be on the Blazers summer team. Story is wide open.... even I don't know where im going with it yet! :D

'09 Summer League

PG Altair Alexander has been placed on the Miami Heat Summer League Squad. In their first practice, Alexander looked very rusty. He was unable to connect on open 16 ft jumpers and struggled to keep a handle of the ball. At the post practice press conference, several Heat players were critical of the 25 year old player.

Beasley : Im not sure why he's here or why he's on our team? Just because im friends with an all-star player doesn't mean I get any extra privileges.

Cook : It is what it is. We pretty much got what we expected today.... and that's a player that has forgotten how to play Basketball.

With the first Summer League Game around the corner... its safe to say Alexander will be coming off the bench, and he may not play at all. Is obvious the rest of the Heat players are a bit angry that he is on the team, so if he does get much time, don't be expecting much output.

NBA on ESPN with Matt Winer, Tim Legler and Jalen Rose

Matt : Welcome to the NBA on ESPN, Im Matt Winer, along side Tim Legler and Jalen Rose. Welcome back guys

Tim : Good to be back and its good to see the NBA off-season kicking in to full gear.

Matt : First things first. Blake Griffin; he's going to be the #1 overall. How has his Summer League play really impressed you guys?

Tim : He is un-doubtingly the cream in this draft. So far averaging 15 PPG and 7 RPG in the first 3 summer league games, he is a man among boys playing out there.

Jalen : I like how clam he plays and how he generally understand the game. He makes very few mistakes and is an absoulute monster in the paint. Once he gets with an NBA teams program, it will be nice to see him mature more at the NBA level and really work on expanding his game.

Matt : Surprisingly he has shown a good mid range jump shot... what do you guys see in that for his future.

Tim : Well the league has become so athletic and diverse at the PF position, a mid range jump shot is something you have to have at that position. I like what I have seen from him so far from mid range, but he still has a lot to learn and I like his potential going forward.

Matt : Most surprising team in the Summer League so far?

Tim : I have to go with the Golden State Warriors. Steph Curry is shooting the ball well and Anthony Morrow looks like he is really getting comfortable with the Don Nelson system. This team has several good young players and they are going to be very fun to watch this season.

Jalen : I agree the Warriors are one of the most exciting teams in the Summer League, but im actually picking a team that beat them in the 1st game, and that's the Miami Heat. There was some controversy surrounding this summer team with the addition of Altair Alexander, but he has showed he can still play this game and I think the Heat players are starting to like play along side him as he has been dishing the ball well and making smart decisions.

Matt : Beasley had some strong words towards him before the games started... but his scoring is up, thanks in part to the smart play of Alexander.

Tim : It will be interesting to see what happens with Alexander after the Summer Leagues are over. My guess he is he will probably end up in the NBA - DL so he can work on his game... but you never know, we might see him in the NBA sometime this year.

Jalen : He's off on his shot but he's playing solid fundamental basketball. I think we will see him in the league sooner than some may expect.

Altair : Hello?

Roy : Hey whats up man?

Altair :What up B? Not much going on here.... just packing my bags

Roy : I heard you had a decent run there at the Summer League's?

Altair : It was alright. I messed up a bit... still got to get my shot back. I missed all my 3's and could hardly hit from 16ft and out.

Roy : So you get picked up by a team yet?

Altair : Nah man.... I haven't heard nothing.

Roy : That's to bad man. So what are your going to do now?

Altair : My dad's got that Brewery in Portland. He needs a manager for it.... so I guess I'll fall back on that.

Roy : Alright.... well at least you got something lined up.

Altair : yeah.... I guess.

Roy : So who you been hanging with down there the last week?

Altair : (laughs).... funny you asked man.... I just got done having lunch with Oden and Bayless over at the Hard Rock.

Roy : Oden's a funny guy man...

Altair : (laughing) Yeah.... dude ordered off the 65+ menu just to show us he could

Roy : (laughs) Yeah.... he does stuff like that

Altair : Yeah... its to bad I couldn't get a spot on a team. The feeling of playing ball and being close with friends felt good.

Roy : Quit acting like a Bitch AA.

Altair : What? You just call me a bitch?

Roy : You heard me bitch. Now pack your bags and get up here to camp man.

Altair : Huh? Camp?

Roy : You lose your hearing over in Afghanistan? I said pack your bags and get up here so you can get ready for camp!

Altair : Maybe I did lose my hearing.... but did you just tell me I'm going to Blazer Camp?

Roy : (laughing)... yeah man. Sorry to put you on like that... I'm sure the brewery would be a nice job... but McMillan wants you in camp by next Monday. Sorry to rain on your beer parade.

Altair : HOLY SH**!! I'm going to be a blazer!!

Roy : Not so fast man. You still got a lot of work to do. Just cause you get an invite doesn't mean your on the team yet. You got to show up and play hard, and leave management with a good impression.

Altair : Alright... I hear ya.

Roy : Alright man... when you get back hit me up on the blackberry. We having a BBQ this Saturday. It will be a good opportunity for you to get to know some of the team that wasn't at the summer league....... and maybe you can give Laura a call and go over and see your little boy.

Altair : Why you gotta bring that up man?

Roy : I'm just a friend man.... and last time I checked I was one of the last one's you had. But hey... your a man... you make your own decisions. I'm just giving you some advice.. that's all.

Altair : Alright man... appreciate it. See ya in Rip City

Roy : Peace.

1080 The Zone (ESPN Portland)

Henry : Welcome back to Hen and Chuck on the Afternoon Shuffle. Chuck is out at the Blazers Training Facilities Today and were joined by him right now.... Whats going on out there Chuck?

Chuck : A lot of good stuff Hen. The Blazers just finished there 2nd srimmage of the day... and there have been a couple studs, dud's and surprises so far.

Henry : Lets here about the dud's first. Who just hasn't seemed to show up yet?

Chuck : There are a couple of them. Travis Outlaw just seems to not be in sync right now with the offense. He is almost an unknown out there on the offense and he has had trouble bringing the energy to the floor we are used to seeing. Another one would have to be Blake. He really couldn't get the white team offense going all day. He just doesn't look good right now.

Henry : I know what you mean. Outlaw and Blake are such key players during the season... hopefully they can shake off the rust in the next couple of days and get it going. So now that we've talked about the un-performing, how about the performing?

Chuck : No surprises here, Roy has really held it together for the white team so far and Aldridge has been a beast down low for the black team. Roy might look better than ever right now. He just scored 27 with 5 rebs and 6 ast's in their last game. He is just doing everything well. Aldridge is hitting bit shots and it looks like he has been working on his mid range game because he was consistently hitting 16 - 18 foot Jump Shots.

Henry : If the Blazers want to make a run, I believe those are the key guys right there. We have seen what these guys can do when their hitting on all cylinders and not only do they play well, but the rest of the team seems to feed of their energy. So we have talked dud's and stud's..... who is the biggest surprise so far?

Chuck : Your not going to believe this... but possibly the 3rd best player today was PG Alexander.

Henry : Wow... that is a surprise. Exactly what did he do today that was such a surprise?

Chuck : How about 26 Pts, 12 ast, and 5 Reb's in the second game today. He lead the black team to a big win over the white team.... and he has pretty much shut out Bayless and Blake from being productive for the white team. There was about a 5 minute stretch in which Roy and him were going really taking over for there team. It was exciting to watch as both players were shooting, dishing and all in all, playing great basketball.

Henry : Is Alexander starting for the black team?

Chuck : Yes he is. He is starting with Aldridge.... on when they are on the court together they are hard to stop.

Henry : So is it possible we were all wrong about this guy and he may be the missing link to the Blazers?

Chuck : Well, there have only been 2 games during camp so far.... but he has looked good. Rumor was he was struggling with his Jump Shot... but he hit some big ones today. He hasn't hit a 3 yet... but when you have Fernandez and Webster on your team... all you have to do is dish the ball, and he did that 20 times today, 12 in the 2nd game.

Henry : Alright Chuck, have fun out there and we will here back from you tomorrow.

Chuck : Talk to you then Hen.

* U of Portland Dorm Room*

There is a knock on the door. Alexander opens it.

Roy : What are you doing all locked up in here man?

Altair : (laughs), Im just studying the playbook man. Come on in.

Roy : You played a good game today..... and I thought you said you’d lost a step.

Altair : It was alright.... I guess I’m starting to regain my game a bit.

Roy just looks at him in agreement.....

Altair : So whats up man? I figured you would be at home with the family this time of night.

Roy : I came to talk

Altair : Talk about what man? Why you acting all serious? Did I fuck up somehow in the game today?

Roy : Nah man... you played good... but....

Altair : But what?

Roy : But what happened to you man? You’ve changed.

Altair : What the fuck are you talkin about B? I aint changed shit.

Roy : So what happened?

Altair : You got to be kidding me right?

Roy : Nah.. I’m not. Your different.

Altair : How am I different?

Roy : I remember you used to be so sure of your self and your game. Talkin shit on the court, (laughs) talkin shit off th court. Rollin around in that SUV with a different girl every night.... blazin up, bumpin tupac on your shitty little stereo. You didn’t have a care in the world.

Altair : (laughs), I still got the tupac cd.. would that make your bitch ass feel better (continues to laugh)

Roy : Remember when we went to state back in ‘02... I thought Nate was going to find you and kill you after all that shit you talked during the game.

Altair : Yeah... I guess I did tear him up a bit.

Roy : You know I had to hear about that for 3 straight years up at UW. (laughs)

Altair : (laughing) It hit em that hard huh? I figured he’d be happy... Ranier Beach still won the game.... and then won state.

Roy : You were just different back then man. I guess I just don’t see the same person on the court.

Altair : So you gonna take your tampon out sometime tonight or should I run to the store and get you some pads (laughs)

Roy : I hear Afghanistan was no joke.

Altair : Why you gotta get so serious all the time B? I’m here enjoying my time, looking through the playbook and you wanna come in here and bring up shit like that? If you came over to be my fuckin psychiatrist you can get the hell up and walk your ass out the door.

Roy : Alright, alright.... I was just asking boy. Shit... I was just making sure you got your head right, thats all.

Altair : I’m straight man... ain’t nothing to worry about.

Roy : (laughing) So I ain’t gotta worry about you stabbin me during the scrim tomorrow after I cross your ass over and dunk on you again?

Altair : You lucky my shoe was un tied... (laughs)

Roy : Alright man... I gotta head back... told the wife and kid I had a lonley freind I had to go check on.... make sure his depressed ass didn’t kill himself.

Altair : (laughs), screw you man... I got friends.

Roy : (laughs) yeah right. If you had friends you’d have a phone.

Altair : A phone? Thats shit’s over-rated. All I need is pen and paper.

Roy : Alright man, I gotta go. later.....

Altair : Later B.

Blazer Practice Facility : Locker Room

Alexander is getting dressed and prepared for the scrim game. All of a sudden he gets a hard shoulder in the back

Alexander : What the fuck?

Andre Miller : Oh, my bad..... (sarcastically)

Alexander : Did you not see me here? I mean, you lockers over there right? (Points to the other side of the room)

Miller : Your right.... have a good game today

Miller returns to his side of the room. Alexander shakes it off and heads out to the court.

3rd Scrimmage / Day 4 of Blazer Camp

Alexander got off to a great start. He was sharing the ball well with Aldridge and Fernandez. Roy was off for the day, so the white team had Miller, Webster, Outlaw, Howard and Pryzbilla on the floor. The black team had extended the lead to 53-34 after the 2nd quarter. The players would take a 5 minute break to get ready for the second half.

Miller : Why don’t you quit showing off out there... your making the rest of us look back. You know this is just camp right? No need to go 100%.

Alexander : Maybe for you.... but I have to make the team. I go 100% all the time. If you don’t like it, then step up your game.

Miller : You think you slick or something? From what I hear your a liability to have on the team, and I will be happy as shit when McMillan see’s that and cuts you.

Alexander doesn’t say anything. He goes back to drinking his Gatorade as Miller walks off.

The 2nd half started off like much off the first half. Alexander dished off a couple more assists to Aldridge and the black team was now up 68 - 38 by the mid way point of the 3rd quarter.

Alexander would pick off and pass from Miller to Webster and it was smooth sailing to the bucket for an easy 2...... but the 2 wasn’t so easy as Miller undercut Alexander while he was airborne for a dunk. Alexander fell hard. Miller shouted at Alexander while he was on the floor

Miller : Get the fuck up show boat!!

Alexander’s ear’s began to ring.... before he knew it, he was on top of Miller, Punching him out. The coaches and players struggled with getting Alexander off of Miller... but not before Miller was out cold with a broken nose and both eyes beginning to swell. Alexander did not have his bearing... and was confused when being pulled off.

Alexander : Let me go damnit!! Get the fuck off of me!!

Alexander pushed the players trying to hold him back away. That's when he heard one of the loudest yells he has ever heard.

McMillan : Alexander!! Get you ass into my office NOW!!!

Alexander walked to McMillan's office as Medical personal broke out the smelling salt to awaken Miller.

McMillan’s Office

McMillan comes in behind Alexander,... McMillan slams the Door behind him.

McMillan : What the fuck were you thinking??

Alexander : I don’t know coach I don’t even -

McMillan : You sure as hell don’t know! What the hell is a matter with you!! Thats assault Altair!! You can’t just cold clock a guy for fouling you!!

Alexander : Coach... I know... It’s like I don’t even remember doing it...

McMillan : Don’t give me that shit Altair. You know exactly what you just did.

Alexander : Coach...

McMillan : Save your tongue Altair. Pack your fucking bags and clear out your room. Your cut.

Altair : But coach!

McMillan : Don’t say another word and I make sure Miller doesn’t press charges against you. Just hurry up and leave these facilities.
