FROM NOTHING TO SOMETHING: A CHARLOTTE BOBCATS ASSOCIATION

FEATURING THE LIFE VOL. 1

Disclaimers Note: Alright guys, here it is. I told you about it in my last post in my Miami Heat Association. This is my very first Player Career Association. I will be using the Charlotte Bobcats mainly in part because 1) I love their team colors, 2) Pretty promising team (in my eyes), and 3) Big fan of Emeka & Wallace. I will be simming the entire 2008-2009 season and give you the team's real life season wrap-up.

During the simulation, I will be looking at trades being offered to me but will promise only to accept if I see fit for the team. I will begin the posts with news from the Bobcats up until around the Draft when I will slowly bring in my player. The game recaps will be different in where I will be asking you guys to choose which game you want to see a recap of during the given week.

If I get no responses I will simply choose the game(s) myself. Other then this, if anything else comes up, I'll be sure to fill you guys in. Hope you all enjoy this one!

Somebody get John Hollinger on the phone because we need some new coaching stats. Even though the ‘08-’09 Charlotte Bobcats only managed to win 3 more games than last year the improvement in play was much, much greater than the relatively small nominal increase. Although these new Bobcats limped out of the gate (again wasting a front-loaded home heavy schedule) they eventually figured out which pieces fit and which didn’t and Charlotte basketball fans were treated to something they haven’t seen in a very long while. Good, solid NBA basketball.

The root cause of success? No question it was new head coach (and behind the scenes assistant GM) Larry Brown, a professional who took over after the Bobcats wasted an entire season under the guidance of amateur coach - or should I say “basketball enthusiast” – Sam Vincent*. Under Brown’s leadership the ‘Cats did things never before seen in their previous four seasons. For one, they ran actual plays. Some of them were questionable – like the famous Raymond Does Dallas play – but hey, they ran plays! And even though Gerald Wallace’s head almost exploded midway through the season, the team eventually grasped “playing the game the right way” and it was beautiful.

I’m not sure that we, as Charlotte pro basketball fans, really understand or appreciate what it is that we have in Coach Brown. Before I go any further, let me present you with the following list:
Dick Harter (settle down class, no snickering)
Gene Littles
Allen Bristow
Dave Cowens
Paul Silas
Bernie Bickerstaff
Sam Vincent

This is a motley collection of what I call “Michael Redd Head Coaches,” meaning guys who would make (and in some cases have made) excellent assistant NBA coaches but for whatever reasons (budgetary, convenience) were thrust into the role of top dog.

Larry Brown does not fit on this list.

Consider the following:
Phil Jackson
Pat Riley
Larry Brown
Greg Popovich
Jerry Sloan

Did you even blink when Coach Brown’s name showed up amongst the recent NBA coaching greats? Of course not. He belongs there; he’s one of them.

Under Coach Brown, Gerald Wallace became a complete NBA player. He shot 80% from the free throw line this season. Again, so you know it’s not a typo, 80%. Once the Raja Bell/Boris Diaw trade happened in December, the Bobcats ranked in the top 5 in Defensive Efficiency. Larry Brown repeatedly called Emeka Okafor out publicly and y’know what, Emeka respects him enough that he will come back next season as the most improved Bobcat.

Coach Brown has brought hope to this franchise and they are only a year and a player or two away from becoming contenders in the East. Props to both Michael Jordan and to Bob Johnson for making the investment. The team is finally on the right path.

CHAPTER ONE: THE PREPARATION

1...2...3...4... "Here we go Jon, I want 5 sets of 25," says Jon's personal trainer, Jeremy Lafitte. "10...11...12...13..." As Jon was going through his last workout routines before heading out to New York for the NBA Draft in which he is projected to be a 1st round pick, he began envisioning playing along Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant or maybe even LeBron James. "20...21...22...23...," Jeremy continues. "I hope I go to a top team, Jeremy. I mean I got the skills to be on a title contending team and you know better than anybody else I most certainly got the attitude to win a Champsionship." Jeremy looked on in uncertainty as he began wiping the sweat off Jon's head, "Yeah, but you know the NBA is more about an individual, it's more about the team-," Jeremy said before being interrupted by Jon. "Listen, I know all that but I mean every great team has one great player. I want to be that player. I know I can be that player that everybody is looking for." Jeremy looked on in disbelief, "2...3...4... 4 more sets."

As Jon continued his workout, a couple of guys around their mid-30's walked in the gym and noticed Jon. "Jon!?! Jon Fajardo? Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! Are you looking to represent Oakland proudly in that draft?" Jon laughed and answered, "You already know it. Look for me on those boxes of Wheaties within a couple of years. I'm going to be big!" As the two shared their laughs, Jon went on to head on to the bicycle to work out on his legs because of his on and off strained calf that hurts at random times.

"Man, I hope this doesn't kill me in the league Jeremy. I mean I've been fine with it when I was playing at Sac State, but I mean this is the NBA you know?" Jeremy replied, "Yeah, I think what you need to do is just wear a pad or brace and stay active with your legs." 6:00pm came and it was time for Jon to meet up with his agent, Reggie Jarrett. Jarrett, who is a long time friend of Jon came about his agent immediately when he heard about Jon's departure from Sac after his Sophomore year.

With the meeting set at Reggie's house in San Jose, Jon hopped in his 1996 Mercury Sable and was set for the 45 minute drive from Oakland to San Jose. As Jon drove by the Oracle Arena, he said to himself, "Man if I play for the Warriors, I would most definately set it off. I could be the hometown hero, the guy everybody loves and the guy everybody wants to be. 35 minutes later, Jon arrived at Reggie"s house. "Yo Reg! What's up man?" Reggie replied, "What's up playa playa! How's my 1st round superstar doing? Come on inside!" As the two walked in the house side by side, Reggie got straight to business. "So listen we only have a couple of days before the Draft and physically you look great. You did great during the interviews and everybody has taken a liking to you. However, I got to be honest man-" Jon interrupted,"What? What's wrong?" Reggie continued, "Your attitude, man. It has to go. Everybody is saying you have this bad boy image about you. That you only care about your production in the NBA and not the team."

Jon looked on, not shocked at all, "But that's how I am Reg. I'm a straight forward, no bullshit kind of guy. If they can't handle it then maybe they're not ready for me." "That may be Jon, but who will benefit more from not having you? Think about it. You have to play the cards right." Jon replied, "Ugh, you know? I can't help but do me! I'll try but I mean I'm a confident person. I can't help it."

Reggie replied, "There's a difference between confident and cocky. Just remember that. But anyways, you got your bags packed? We're leaving tomorrow and I want a nice smooth flight from our departure to our arrival." Jon replied,"Yeah, everythings set. I can't wait to get my name called up!"

After going over a few more things about the Draft and such, Jon left and was on the road waiting 45 minutes before returning home again. His last thoughts on the night continued going through his head, "And with the (number) pick of the NBA Draft, the (team name here) select Jon Fajardo from Sacramento State!"

CHAPTER TWO: TONE THAT ATTITUDE DOWN

As Reggie and Jon got off the plane, Jon looked around and smiled, "Ahh, I can get used to this here." Moment's later, both Reggie and Jon arrived to their hotel room and with the NBA Draft just around the corner, Jon decided to hit the gym and shoot a couple. "Hey Reg, I'm about to head out and hit the gym since I haven't been to any of the NBA's workout's, you in? I have't seen one of your imfamous crossovers in quite awhile now!" Reggie laughed, "Naw, I'm too old to be breaking and embarrassing you fellas at the gym. You go ahead and don't get into trouble! It's bad enough you haven't gone to any of the workouts for the rookies." Jon replied, "No problem, the night before the Draft, I can't loose my cool."

Jon left. 15 minutes later he arrived at a local 24 hour fitness and worked out a bit before shooting around. As Jon finished, he noticed a familiar face in the gym. Jon approached him and to his amazement, it was Kevin Durant of the Seattle Supersonics. The two have been good friends for awhile but Jon had no idea Kevin would be at the gym he showed up to. "Yo Kev!" Jon shouted. Almost immediately, Durant turned around and noticed Jon getting up from the bench. "Hey what's up kid? How you been? I heard you was entering the Draft. How's that going?" "Man, it's been pretty good. I mean the feeling of knowing that a professional team wants you is crazy in enough you know?" Kevin replied, "Yeah, man I feel you. When they called my name I was so nervous, I honestly didn't know what to do." "Yeah, you were lucky because you got called second. You're doing pretty good too, man. I'm proud of you!" Kevin replied, "Hey thanks man, I'm sure you'll do fine once you get your name called up Mr. Big Shot!"

The two laughed it off and continued to walk in the gym where there was enough people to run 3's. "You guy's trying to scrimmage?" Jon asked. "Yeah!" They all agreed. Team's were set and Jon and Durant were on opposite sides. As Jon began bringing the ball up, he caught Durant guarding him. "Let's see what you got Mr. Big Shots!" As Jon began dribbling, he passed the ball left, set the pick, got the ball back. He then drove in, step back fade-a-away, swish! Several possessions later, it was Durant's turn. Durant posted Jon up quite easily considering Jon's 6'3" stature. Durant backed up, span around, easy lay up. After 25 minutes of playing time, Jon and Kevin went off to drink some water.

"Man, do you know how cool it'd be if we ended up on the same team?" Jon asked. "It'd be crackin'!" Durant replied. "We would be the talk of Seattle for years to come! The Dynamic Duo! Man, that'd be great." Durant replied, "I feel you man, hey though, in the NBA anything can happen so maybe." "Yeah, maybe," Jon replied. As the night rolled on, Jon began to pack his stuff up before heading out back to the hotel. "Hey Kev! I'm about to head out." "Alright man, I'm going to stay here for a bit and get a couple shots in. Hey though, good luck in the Draft! I'm going to be watching!"

"Yeah, thanks a lot man. I'll see you soon," Jon said as he carried his black and white Adidas sports bag.

As Jon entered his hotel room, he noticed Reggie was on the phone. However, he knew something was wrong, the look on Reggie's face was the look of someone who had just heard of a death in the family. As Reggie hung up, "Oh hey Jon." Jon knew something was amist, "Hey what's up Reg? What's going on?" "Well, Jon, I just got off the phone from one of my sources and apparently your draft status has taken a big hit. You're now projected as going in the early 2nd round." Almost immediately, Jon had a look of disgust on his face. He exclaimed, "What!?! How? How did I go from a 1st round pick to an early 2nd round pick!?! This is impossible! No-No-No! You have to call and check again. They can't be right."

Reggie calmed Jon down and explained, "Listen man, I'm as shocked as you are but I mean I told you- you're attitude is a big part of what type of player you are. Word got out about you skipping all the mandatory workouts and every GM has changed their minds about you." Jon looked on with a fierce facial expression, "So now I'm projected to be a early 2nd round pick? What the hell am I suppose to do now?" Reggie replied, "Well, Jon, the best thing for you is to just ride this thing out. I mean, maybe one of the team's will overlook your attitude and take a chance with you." "I hope so because I've worked too hard to be drafted down. This is bull!" Throwing his bag on the floor, Jon jumped into bed and put on his iPod. His last words before calling it a night, "Things better change tomorrow."

Very neat presentation. (Y)

Most team declines the option of their players. Which roster are you using? Is it Albys' or Juza's?

Thanks. But neither. I'm on PS2 but I did update the rosters as accurate as possible so everything should be okay as far as players on the correct team.

CHAPTER THREE: PROBLEMS ARISE IN CHARLOTTE

Just days after the draft, Jon arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina to meet up with his new team. As he got off the plane, he was greeted by a chant of boo's and a little bit of cheering for those fans who knew something about him. As he and Reggie began walking down the stairs, Jon turned and told Reggie, "Man, I got picked in the 2nd round!?! I still can't believe this is happening to me. Not only did I get drafted in the 2nd round, but I got picked by the Charlotte Bobcats!?! Who are they!?!" Reggie looked on and tried relaxing Jon, "Listen man, you should be happy you got drafted at all. The Bobcats have a great thing going here, being coached by the great Larry Brown. You should give them a shot, and who knows, knowing that they're low on shooting guards, you might be able to start rather than come off the bench for a playoff team who already has a quality shooting guard." Being the hard-headed player he was, Jon simply said, "Whatever."

As they walked through the airport, it seemed as if everyone knew about Jon Fajardo and his attitude as a couple of fans yelled from a distance, "Go back to California!" Jon knew that this was going to be a very tough transition. Continuing his walk from which seemed to be a lifetime, a couple more fans took the time to purposely bump into Jon as a "We don't want you here," gesture. Jon responded, "I can't handle this Reg, we need get out of here fast!" Moments later, they arrived at the Bobcat's training facility where there were more fans outside which means more heckling. As Jon approached the front entrance he noticed Gerald Wallace and Emeka Okafor walking towards the court.

He quickly ran up to them and introduced himself, "Hey guys, I'm Jon Fajardo, looks like we're going to be playing on the same team." No response, it seemed not only did the fans know about Jon, but the player knew as well. Wallace and Okafor continued walking without Jon by their side. As Jon put his head down, he immediately lifted the second he heard his name get called from a distance. It was Charlotte's own, D.J. Augustine. "Yo Jon, what's up man?" Jon replied, "Man, nothing. Things are already tough for me. I don't think I can handle this you know?" Augustine smiled and explained, "Yeah man I hear you, but check it- these fans have a reason to second guess you because I mean c'mon, you even know what you've done. But I've seen you play and I really think you can handle it. I know it's hard taking compliments from a sophomore but trust me, I was a rookie once. I know what it was like and how hard the transition was."

Agreeing, Jon and Augustine continued to walk to the court. As they entered, Jon saw the entire squad shooting around. Despite being on a lame-duck team, Jon knew that this was exactly what he wanted and that if he was going to fit in, he was going to have make an early impact. As a couple of players decided to get a game of 3 going before practice, Jon offered to be the 3rd man on Augustines team which also included Okafor. As the game continued on, it eventually pit Jon against Gerald Wallace. As physical as it was, Wallace would not let Jon do anything with the ball, as Jon tried to shake and go right, Wallace knowingly elbowed him in his rib. "Aye man c'mon!" Jon yelled. But Wallace just did not want to hear it, "What? Don't tell me that you softened up considering all those worksouts you missed. This ain't no joy ride. You're gonna get hurt in this league!" Just then, Jon lowered his shoulders and knocked Gerald Wallace on the ground-who immediately got up and squared up with Jon. "Listen, be happy you're even in this league. You're no superstar. Everybody sees that. You better understand where you lie on the team pyramid. We're on the top and you're on the very bottom looking up. Don't you ever forget it rook!"

Jon looked on, turned to Augustine and said, "Just take it out again."

"Golden State Looking to Shop Ellis"

Image

Oakland, California (AP)- Word out of Golden State is that the Warriors are looking to shop PG, Monta Ellis. It has been rumored that the front office are looking for a center in exchange. Ellis, 24, averaged 19.2 points per game and 7.4 assists per game during the 2008-2009 season and is making approximately $11.55M with the Warriors for 5 years.

No word was given from Monta Ellis about the trade. His agent specified that, "It is what it is, if they lose Ellis, they have just lost a future all-star for years to come." More on this news will be given when further information has been released.

CHAPTER FOUR: TRAINING CAMP & PUNCHES

With the Pre-season just a week away, the entire Bobcats' roster began their training camp. However, none of them can fathom about what was a bout to go down. Walking into the training facility, Jon Fajardo came in with D.J. Augustine who have gotten to be very close friends throughout the off-season. "So what's up man? You want to work on shooting, passing, what?" Augustine asked. "It don't even matter, let's work with our passing." Just then, Jon came across Gerald Wallace who was working on his free throws. As the two came past each other, Augustine sensed a lot of tension between and told Jon, "Come on man, don't even front. Ya'll two have been at each others throat since day 1. The season is almost here man, get your head in the game!"

Jon came back to his senses and agreed. As the two began running sideways down the court practicing their bounce passes, Jon accidentally bumped into Gerald Wallace just as he was about to shot the ball. "Aye man, watch where you're going!" Wallace exclaimed. "Jon awcknowledged his comment and kept practicing with Augustine who knew something was going to go down. Moments later, D.J. and Jon were practicing their shot selections when a ball a couple feet away hit Jon in the head. Jon turned around and noticed Wallace snickering saying, "My fault Rook! Aye can you throw that back?" Just then Jon snapped and threw the ball straight at Wallace's head. In an instant, Wallaced ducked and was immediately greeted with a shot from Jon.

As the two started exchanging punches, D.J. and Leon Powe were trying to separate the two. Just then, Head Coach Larry Brown stormed on the court and exclaimed, "That's it! Both of you in my office right now!" As they walked behind Brown to the office, Wallace nudged Fajardo and yet again, they were at it. When they were finally separated for the second time and escorted by their teammates to Brown's office, Brown had this look of uncertainty. "Listen, you both obviously have something against each other and that needs to stop ASAP!" Jon interrupted, "But Coach!-" "I don't want to hear it Jon! We're trying to make a run in the East you both pull this shit just weeks before our pre-season starts? You've got to be kidding me!"

Brown, holding a pencil tightly until it finally breaks added, "You know what? You guys want to keep fighting? Go ahead. You have until after our first pre-season game to fight because as of today you both are suspended from our first game in the pre-season!" Wallace and Fajardo looked at each other in amazement. "What? No Coach you can't do that!" they both explained. "I can do whatever I want and do you know why? Because you guys are not bigger than me! I decide who plays and who doesnt. Don't even think about going to Mike because I've already talked to him! Now leave!"

With a look of disgust, Jon left the office with his head down. Wallace, who was right behind him says, "Nice going Rook. You don't belong on this team at all. It's only a matter of time before Mike and Brown realize it." As Jon walked in an opposite direction from Wallace, Jon responded, "Shut the f*** up!" And with that, Jon and Wallace will have to sit out for their first pre-season game.

As Jon entered the locker room, he punched the wall angrily and was approached by Augustine. "Hey man what happened?" Jon responded, "Coach suspended me and Gerald for the first pre-season game and said that if we fight again then he's going to suspend us another game, only during the regular season!" D.J. looked on an said, "I told you man, you gotta keep your cool here. Take some time to yourself and just chill, you know? And if you can try and work everything out with Gerald because he's going to be your teammate whether you like it or not." Jon had this look of understanding and thought about it for a minute before responding, "Yeah, I feel you. I just need to think about everything and gather myself." As Jon packed his stuff up and left for his hotel room, D.J. shouted, "Stay up man!"
