It was but 12 months ago that basketball junkies across the nation were questioning the strength of the Denver Nuggets. Then they had the worse defense in the league. And when Marcus Camby, their only defensively minded player left for the Clippers for a 2nd round pick, everyone thought the Nuggets were destined for the league's bottom.
Then, on the start of the new season, Right in the time when something had to change, a trade was made. It was the best thing that happened to the Nuggets, and the best thing that happened to J.R. Smith's career. It was also the worst thing that ever happened to the Pistons, and Allen Iverson's career. Chauncey Billups was in the city. The 2004 Finals MVP adapted to the Nuggets. Along with Carmelo Anthony and Billups, Denver accomplished a great deal of franchise milestones. Their 54-28 record matched the most wins the franchise has gotten since their induction in the NBA, their 27-14 start was also a record for wins in the first half of a season. This also marked the first time in the franchise's history the team has gotten back-to-back 50-win seasons. They led the Northwest division for much of the season, eventually winning the division and placing for #2 in the Western Conference, matching the highest the team has ever been seeded for the playoffs. In the first round.
The starting 5 now looks like this: Billups, Smith, Anthony, Martin, Nene
Since we already talked about Billups and Anthony, lets see the other 3 guys. J.R. Smith just had a breakout year. He averaged 16 points per game and and he just slipped the 6th man of the year award to Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks.
Nene has established himself as one of the most powerful big man in the league. His mind blowing jams and blocks are becoming a routine at Pepsi Center, Nene averaged 14 points, 8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks during the past season. He is expected to grow to an All-star player in the next couple of seasons.
Kenyon Martin is another veteran leader in this team. As a 7-year pro, Martin is mostly recognized for his athletic ability. Just like Nene, Kenyon can jam and block. Although his best years are behind him, he can still add a lot to this team.
