Offseason 2008/09

At Alejandro Viano's home...

- Hey, Alejandro! -somebody shouted from the door
- Hey, what's up Mike

Mike, and old friend of him while being the interim GM of the Phoenix Suns while Steve Kerr was dealing with a homicide charge, arrived at his home in Arizona with some news...

- Alejandro, didn't you hear the news?
- No, I'm just packing my bags, I'm moving back to Argentina in the next week.
- What? Look at this...

Mike gave a copy of a newspaper to Alejandro, it contained some NBA info...

- What's the news? That there are some GM vacancies in the league, every year the same story.
- No! you idiot, read right here.

Alejandro started reading...

"We are 2 months away from training camp, and there are NBA teams looking for the right choice to fill the GM spot that is currently vacant. Milwaukee, New York, New Jersey, Memphis and Sacramento are still interviewing candidates. For any unknown reason we don't know why nobody reached with the Argentinian Alejandro Viano, who in his 3 month tenure as the Suns' interim GM he managed some trades that later helped the Suns. He's unemployed right now after resigning on..."

- Yes... and?
- And what? Alejandro, you're going to be on the eye of somebody! You can be the next GM of any NBA team!
- Well... I will stay for one more month, let's see if something appears...

3 Days Later...

At Alejandro's home...

riiiing... riiing... - Alejandro's cellphone

- Yes, Alejandro's here
- Hi, it's Herb Kohl
- Kohl... The Bucks owner?
- Yes, the owner, Are you still unemployed?
- By now... yes... I'm looking for a job or I return to Argentina.
- Well, for that I'm calling you... for the GM spot. Are you open for the possibility?
- Yes... I think so...
- Ok, let's arrange an interview, next Friday, 5pm in my office.
- Ok, I'm taking the plane, I call you when I arrive in Milwaukee.
- See you, good luck

2 Hours later...

- the cellphone rings again...

- Hello... Alejandro Viano's there?
- Yess... I'm talking to...
- Joe Maloof, Kings Owner
- Hi... in what can I help you?
- We have vacant the position for the GM spot... I me and my brother would like to interview you for the spot... Do you accept our proposal?
- Sure, I have another interview on Friday, let's do it on Saturday?
- No problem, We are in Sacramento until Monday night, so we can have dinner and talk about it.
- Allright, so... I call you when I'm in Sacramento
- Ok, I'm waiting you phone call, see you Alejandro

On The Next Day...

somebody knocks the door at Alejandro's House...

- Who is?
- It's Michael Heasly,
- Michael who?
- Heasly... I come from Memphis... I'm the owner of the Grizzlies
- Oh... sorry I never heard about you, come in come in

In the living room...

- So... ask Alejandro... In what can I help you sir?
- I saw your job in Phoenix, you don't hesitate to pull a trade and the trades you made were pretty convincent for a young man. You know what a team needs. And the Grizz are needing somebody with that character
- So... you're offering me to work in the team?
- Yes, I'm want to offer you the position of GM
- Woow... Nice, i like it
- Would you like to have an interview?
- Why don't we start right now
- I like you attitude Mr. Viano... Let's talk about the job...

Alejandro Viano is the GM of the Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies announced early in the morning that the Argentinian Alejandro Viano is the new GM.
Viano had a brief moment as the Suns' GM when Steve Kerr was involved in a home shooting and took a leave of absence. He pulled some trades (brought Jannero Pargo and a second rounder for almost nothing) that going into the season were pretty important.

Owner Michael Heasley said in the press conference:

- The Memphis Organization is proud to name Alejandro Viano the new GM of the Grizzlies. We need a new direction, a new mentallity and energy, and we think Alejandro brings a lot of this to the team. We're looking forward to work together so make the Grizz a playoff contender

Later, GM Viano said that there would be some changes in the roster and the coaching staff. He didn't give any name yet. We will see these days.

GM Viano fires Iavaroni... Names Ruben Magnano headcoach

Image

Recently named Memphis GM, Alejandro Viano pulled is first great move. He sacked Mike Iavaroni from the coaching duties and named his countrymen and widely recognised coach Ruben Magnano the next coach of the Grizzlies. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Magnano, 55, is known for coaching the Argentinian National team to a second place in Indianapolis 2002 and the gold medal in Athens 2004. But everybody knows him for being the coach of the team who beat for the very first time a USA team with NBA players. They beat them in 2002 and again in the semifinals in Athens 2004, where by the USA were Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson.

Memphis GM Viano pulls major trades, bring offensive power to Grizzlies

A quite shaky week in Tennessee as the Grizzlies pulled 4 trades during this week. This is the recap

- Memphis trade F Antonie Walker and GF Greg Buckner to Blazers for PF Raef Lafrentz and SG Rudy Fernandez

ImageImageImageImage

Memphis really stole the Blazers by getting a young promising star in Fernandez and the best expiring contract available in LaFrentz. Raef, at 32 can bring some depth at PF and is a good locker room presence.
The NBA world still don't believe how the Blazers accepted Buckner and Walker in return, Buckner is a good defensive player but far from his prime as Walker, who everybody prefers him away from the team.

RATE

Memphis: A
Blazers: F

- Memphis trade PG Steve Francis to Lakers for F Adam Morrison, 1st Round pick 2009

ImageImage

Another good move by the Grizz, getting a scoring punch to the bench and getting a first rounder for the often injured pint guard that wasn't in Ruben Magnano's plans. The Lakers got a backup to Derek Fisher who still can play 15-20 minutes

RATE

Memphis: B
Lakers: C

- 3 Team trade where Memphis traded PF Hakim Warrick and Darko Milicic to Phoenix and Darrel Arthur to MIlwaukee; The Bucks traded PG Damon Jones and F Joe Alexander to Memphis and PG Ramon Sessions and PF Luc Mbah a Moute to the Suns; Phoenix traded F Matt Barnes, F Jared Dudley to the Bucks and PF Stromile Swift and F Alando Tucker to the Grizzlies

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

For Memphis: GM Viano wanted Darko out of Memphis, having a ugly contract, no basketball spirit and a bad locker room presence he was on his way out, losing Warrick was the worst part, but in his contract year and willing to became a FA, it was better to get something in return. Arthur is a rookie with potential but due to his rookie weekend scandal, he was marked by the organization. The point of the trade was getting Swift, who has 4ys left and $3.28M in his contract

For Milwaukee: They lost Sessions and the rookie Alexander as the biggest news, but they got 2 good players on Barnes and Dudley, but they still got the worst part of the scenario

For Phoenix: They finally get a quality backup to Steve Nash in Sessions and they received to frontcourt players, Maybe Shaq can be the teacher who finds something in Darko

RATE

Memphis: C+
Milwaukee: D
Phoenix: A

- Memphis trades G Marko Jaric, F Joe Alexander and two 2nd round picks (2009 and 2010) to Goldes State for C Andris Biedrins

ImageImageImage

Memphis at least has the quality center they were looking for. Biedrins, at $10M and 6ys is their center for the future and they got rid of the $7M, 3ys left on Jaric contract. Alexander was what GSW wanted in return plus with the picks.

Memphis: A
Golden State: C-

- Memphis, after the trades had only 11 players on the team, so they filled it signing the free agents PF Robert Horry, PF Austin Croshere and PG Shaun Livingston to a contract. Terms were not disclosed

INTERVIEW WITH COACH MAGNANO

Image

Newly Grizzlies coach, Ruben Magnano, after today's practice, talked to reporters about his succesfull coaching career in Argentina, with the National team and his new challenge in the NBA.

Memphis: Hi coach, we all know that you were champion with Atenas in Argentina, you won the gold medal with Argentina in Athens, but now you're moving to a different basketball world, how is going on that move?

Coach Magnano: Well, hi to everybody. It's a bit difficult by now to communicate with the players, I'm just getting on with the language but sometimes it would be easier to talk to them in spanish but with the time the communication will get better. You said that is another world in basket, I wouldn't say that at all. Different? Yes it is, but with the addition of players like Manu, The Gasol brothers, Scola, Nash, the game is getting the taste of European and South American game. The NBA is starting to assemble a lot of types of games. I will try to put a bit of my type of game here in Memphis

M: So, what is going to be that type of game?

Coach: First of all, I want everybody to take all they selfishness away, I don't want to be a 1, 2 man game, the 5 that are on the court are attacking options, and everybody who comes of the bench too. Second, I want the Grizz to be like a machine, I want them to be perfect, yes perfect. And last, and I would say the most difficult, I want defense, but I think that with the course of the season we would be better

M: Lots of trades, lots of new faces... You suggested them?

Coach: I talked to Alejandro (Memphis GM) and I recommended some players and some positions that I wanted to solidify. He answered me and I'm very happy

M: Last question, this year goal is?

Coach: I want to give some happiness to the city of Memphis, I hope for a playoff spot

Grizz' PG Conley dislocates finger in team practice

With the season just 2 weeks ahead, Memphis received some bad news. PG Mike Conley dislocated his left index finger while colliding with teammate Andris Biedrins in today's practice and he will miss some time.
Conley, was projected by some experts as the starting point guard of the Grizzlies. Now he's questionable for the team debut against the Wizards.

If he can't play or he's not 100%, he will be replaced but Shaun Livingston or Damon Jones

Ultra Explosive Offense leads Memphis to opening game win

It is not a game between Phoenix and Golden State, but the scheme that Ruben Magnano wants in Memphis was a primetime show at the FedEx as the Grizzlies run over the Wizards 139-122 in the opening game of the season.
Memphis shot a NBA record 60-81 from the field for a stunning 74% THE ENTIRE GAME. Just out of this world...

Shaun Livingston, starting for injured Mike Conley, was in a very good shape as he scored 11 points along with a career hig 21 assists, 5 steals and 7 rebounds. Adam Morrison, the scoring threat had a game high 30 points, and Rudy Gay notched 21
For the Wizards, DeShawn Stevenson scored 30, Butler 29 and Arenas, looking finally healthy, scored 19 with 14 assists.

FREE THROWS:

* Memphis set and NBA record for shooting 74% from the field
* Mike Conley, despite having a dislocated finger, played from the bench and had 14 assists.
* Raef LaFrentz keep the team up when Washington tried to escape on the third, scoring 16 points on 7-7 shooting (2 threes)

NEXT GAME: @ Dallas
PREDICTION: Both teams above 100 points, No defense, Dallas Win

Big Fourth quarter run propels Memphis over Dallas

Memphis is showing promise of great basketball by beating the Mavs in Dallas 132-94. The Grizzlies led by the entire game, but Dallas was down just by 10 at the beginning of the 4th but with a rush of baskets by Gay and Livingston, the Grizz scored 46 in the fourth to take over the win.

Shaun Livingston had his first triple-double of his career with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 16 assists. He also had 5 steals. Rudy Gay led the game with 28 points.
For the Mavs, Nowitzki had a good but not enough night, 21 points with 9 rebounds and Jason Terry scored 26

FREE THROWS:

* Rudy Gay had a great defensive game, limiting Josh Howard to just 7 points (3-14 from the field)
* Morrison and Fernandez scored 25 points from the bench
* Livingston shot 13-15 from the field and Gay 12-16

Livingston injured in victory over Thunder

With just 2 minutes to go and the game sealed, Ruben Magnano decided to stay with they starting five and it costed. Livingston stepped in Russell Westbrook foot while scoring on a layup and he tweaked his left ankle. He walked of the court by his own power and they later ended the game by 113-85

Livingston was playing maybe the best game of his career. He scored the second triple-double of his career with 14 points, 14 assists and a career high 17 rebounds. Adam Morrison scored a game high 29 from the bench
From the Thunder side, Kevin Durant scored 22 and Westbrook 16 along with 7 dimes. They were led of the bench by Earl Watson with 23.

Initial reports says that Livingston has a soft ankle sprain, timetable for full recovery is 5 to 7 days. All Memphis and the NBA world is breathing again.

FREE THROWS:

* Ruben Magnano was scared when Livingston limped in one foot, but later said in press conference that is Shaun is OK
* Rudy Gay scored just 14 points. He's on a scoring bump but Morrison is helping in that side
* Mike Conley had 12 assist, along with 0 points and 3 rebounds. Quite weird stats.

NEXT GAME: @ Golden State
PREDICTION: Memphis by 5. Livingston starting. Both teams above 115 points

For some reason the injury is quite soft, he's ruled as playable for the next 6 days... And in that 6th day Memphis visits Golden State.

I hope he's full strength for the next game

Livingston set new NBA assist record in blowout to Warriors

Shaun Livingston is raising eyebrows all around the planet. A tweaked ankle didn't bother the former Peoria High and he started the game and set a new NBA Record with 36 assists in the 132-81 blowout to the Warriors at Oakland.

Livingston played 42 minutes and flirted wit a QUADRUPLE-DOUBLE, scoring 21 points, 36 assists, 8 rebounds and a career high 9 steals, along with 4 blocks. He achieved so many assists because Stromile Swift stepped up this game with 30 points in 13-13 from the field. Just unbeliavle.
Biedrins scored 17 with 14 rebounds and Mayo and Gay combined for 40.

From the Warriors, Stephen Jackson led the team with 20 points and Monta Ellis had 12 and 13 assists. The only other to score in double figures was Corey Maggette with 11.

The Grizzlies started the season with 4 wins in a row. But they don't faced a strong oponent. How they will fare in the season? Maybe the playoffs can be a reality

FREE THROWS:

* Shaun Livingston set a NBA Record with 36 assists
* The Grizzlies allowed Jackson and Ellis a combined 12-33 from the field (36%)
* Memphis starting 5 scored 101 points, 20 more points than the entire Golden State team
* Stromile Swift tweaked his right ankle in the second quarter. But he returned to the court 3 minutes later
* Conley continues with his weird stats, 0 points, 0 rebounds but 6 assists.

NEXT: @ Minnesota
PREVIEW: Memphis by 16. If Memphis finds an answer for the Miller-Jefferson duo, it is a sure victory.
