A Look At The Playoff Picture
March 29, 2009 | Sports | NBA | Philadelphia 76ers
After a slow start, the Philadelphia 76ers have once again climbed back into the playoff picture. Led by the strong play of star Andre Iguodala, Point Guard Andre Miller and star sixth man Thaddeus Young, Philadelphia is now 3 games above .500 and is sixth place in the Eastern Conference Playoff Picture.
Overcoming high-profile signing Elton Brand's disappointing play, the Sixers have become one of the most exciting teams in the NBA. The question is: How far will they go? The Sixers are just 2 games up on the 9th place Nets, but are only 2.5 games away from a top four seed. The Sixers, winners of 7 of their past 10, have a favorable schedule, but will they be more than just first round fodder for a real contender?
Meanwhile, the NBA season has gone generally according to plan, albeit with very unpolarizing records and a couple surprises. The Portland Trailblazers, who missed the postseason last year, have the top record in the Western Conference and are one of just three teams to have clinched a playoff spot. Additionally, the Indiana Pacers, a lottery season the past 2 seasons have flourished since the trade of franchise player Jermaine "The Drain" O'Neal and have the second seed in the East. Finally, the perennial contender Phoenix Suns look to be all but out of playoff contention, as the strain of age and poor chemistry have them 11 games under .500 with nine games remaining.
Teams will battle it out for seeding until the end. The Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets are in a heated battle for the final seed and chance to be swept by the champs. the Western Conference sees rivals Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors duking it out for the eighth seed.
With the NBA playoffs just 19 days away, most of the NBA is in a frenzy racing to the playoffs. Whether the Sixers make it or not, one thing is for certain: amazing will happen.

Sixers post 3-1 record for week, improve record to 40-35
April 5, 2009 | Sports | NBA | Philadelphia 76ers
The week started with a hard 101-97 loss in Detroit, putting them in the 7th seed and just a game and a half above the 9th place Nets. This seemed to wake the Sixers as they dominated their homestand, beating the Hawks by 13, the Bucks by 10, and got their revenge on the Pistons with a 95-90 victory.
The wins improve the Sixers' record to 40-35. Their 40 wins already matches last year's total. They now tie their division rivals Toronto Raptors for fifth in the conference and second in the division. Philadelphia owns the tiebreaker.
Atlantic Division Standings
Celtics 47-30 (2)
76ers 40-35 (5)
Raptors 40-35 (6)
Nets 38-38 (8)
Knicks 33-43
The Sixers have seven games remaining in their schedule. With two more wins they can post their first winning season since 2004-05. A combination of four Pistons losses or Sixers wins will clinch their second consecutive playoff berth. Five of the seven games are on the road. All of them are against Eastern Conference teams, three of which are in the Atlantic Division. They Sixers are a game behind the Hawks (42-35) for the fourth seed and homecourt advantage in the first round.
Sixers go 2-2 For Week, Clinch Playoff Seeds, Winning Record
April 12, 2009 | Sports | NA | Philadelphia 76ers
Its official, the Philadelphia 76ers will be returning to the NBA Postseason this year. Clinching the playoff seed with the upset victory over the league best Cleveland Cavaliers, the Sixers will now set their sights on improving to a higher playoff seed.
The week started with an epic comeback win in New Jersey. Entering the fourth quarter down 14, the nets locked down on defense and took control of the game, outscoring the Nets 33-14 in the period en route to an important 91-86 win. The defeat was a major setback for the 10th place Nets' playoff hopes, while it gave Philly their 41st win, giving them an improved record over last year's 40-42 mark.
Unfortunately, the Sixers were on the wrong side of a comeback when the East's worst team, the Charlotte Bobcats, stunned them by overcoming an 8 point deficit in the final three minutes of a thrilling 86-85 Bobcat victory. It was likely the high point of the Cats' season. The Sixers followed that up with a crushing blowout loss at the hands of the Chicago Bulls, another team gunning for the 8th seed. They failed to contain Ben Gordon, whose 29 points led the charge.
Philadelphia finished the week on a high point, knocking off the Cavaliers, holders' of the NBA's top record, 100-88. In that game, the big 3 (Iguodala, Brand, Miller) combined for 57 points, 18 rebounds and 18 assists on 23-37 shooting. This victory officially clinched a playoff seed for the Sixers as well as a winning season, being their 42nd victory. In the win, they contained LeBron James to 18 points on 6-20 shooting. They also ended the Cavaliers' 7 game winning streak.
As exciting as the playoff clinching is, the Sixers still aren't finished with the regular season. They have their work cut out for them as they face the Toronto Raptors, who they are currently tied with for 6th in Toronto tonight. They also have an ample opportunity to leapfrog the Hawks (43-37) for the fifth seed, and potentially have homecourt advantage in the opening round should they win out and the Magic lose one of their final two games. No matter who they play; the Magic, the Celtics, the Pacers, the Hawks, or even the Cavs, one thing is for sure: we'll be watching.
