The players do improve by themselves. They improve too much, actually. I am now in my third season, and Chris Kaman is a 96, Eric Gordon a 94, and Al Thornton a 91. The only one I used development drills on is Thornton, to improve his rebounding, low post offense and low post defense. Eric Gordon started complaining during the first season, mostly due to his role and that his overall rating jumped up too quickly. So I had him in the low 80's after a while in his rookie season, and he complained for the whole season. I eventually started him at the 2 guard, but it still took a while to improve his morale. Any player whose role is set to Prospect will complain once their rating gets to 80. They will want a better role and more playing time.
Alot of it depends on their attitude, too. What you can do is go into the association with Hades roster editor and edit those "???" ratings for their attitude and how important their salary, "team loyalty" and "winning team" values. Set those three to zero(They are the ones that are usually only rated at 0, 25, 50, 75, or 99) and their attitudes will change to "not important." I did an experiment and set them all to 99 and the player's morale dropped alot quickly.
As for J Oneal, you need to see what he is complaining about by checking his player card.
