A franchise Story: 08 Nets in Play-off (Not dynasty mode)

Postby Ordlad on Wed Feb 27, 2008 10:19 pm

Hi guys: I'm waiting for the 2008 draft patch to play dynasty mode, but it's still far from becoming completed yet. Therefore, I played the season mode with New Jersey Nets and the franchise story is about the entire play-off performance. Hope you enjoy it!

Play-off mode setup:
Difficulty: Superstar
Game Length: 5 min
Simulation Length: 12min
Schedule: NBA

The 2007-2008 Season: It was meant to be a crazy season, isn't it? Well, several teams get 60+ wins while 4 teams were under 20 wins! The top scorer scored 40+ ppg, while the top PG grabbed 17+ apg! Chris Kaman is the 3 point FG leader! The season also saw Charlotte Bobcats making the play-off for the first time, and a 2nd seed! What a world! The New Jersey Nets, fortunately, were among those who won over 60 games. Led by future HOF player Jason Kidd, the team has a league-best starting line-up with Tyson Chandler as Center, Kenyon Martin as Power Forward, Richard Jefferson as Small Forward, Vince Carter as Shooting Guard and Jason Kidd running the point(Don't ask me how I acquired Chandler and Martin if you already knew that in season mode, only the player rating counts in trades). The Nets started a perfect season 8-0, but was then stuck in road games. Still, the Nets were able to accomplish the season with a 61-21 record due to their fabulous home performance, 40-1. Nonetheless, the Nets ranked merely as the 3rd seed in East Conference, which indicated that they were only guaranteed a home-court advantage in the 1st round of the play-off series. Apparently, coach Lawrence Frank had a lot of works to do in order to achieve the goal, to win the championship for our beloved captain ---- Jason Kidd.

Regular Season Preview1:

Player Stat:
Image

The Nets' players had a perfect season though. Tyson Chandler, acquired from Hornets one day before the trade deadline, averaged 10.6 ppg, 7.5 rpg and 0.9 apg, while led the team with 2.1 bpg. Kenyon Martin is a beast though, averaged 22.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg and 1.0 apg on 77.6% FG shooting! Richard Jefferson was now the 3rd option for team offense, he managed to grabbed 20.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg and 2.3 apg on 70.2% FG shooting. Vince Carter, the team's leading scorer, averaged 26.4 ppg and 3.7 rpg, he's still aggressive and hard to guard. Jason Kidd had just experienced a fantastic season, averaged 12.4 ppg, and two franchise records 17.1 apg and 6.58 spg! The substitutes are also productive in limited minutes, while JR Smith, another acquired player during winter time, was a decent six-man for the Nets. The team had blown out the rivals by 20+ ppg during their victory, which indicated how powerful the Nets' roster was. However, the Nets' substitute center --- Josh Boone sucked badly, which meant that Tyson Chandler had to play nearly the entire game! Still, he's able to reach the expectation and the Nets were already prepared for the upcoming play-off games. How good will they perform? Let's wait and see.

Regular Season Preview2:

Match-up Preview:

Image

The Nets had a wonderful start 8-0 at the beginning of the season, blowing out the opponents by around 30 ppg. The perfect run was ended by the Celtics in Nov, 14, when the Celtics hand the 1st loss to the Nets by a double digit win. Still, after the mid-November, the Nets were still able to rank the 1st in the league.

Image

The Nets continued to dominate their opponents, but they were unable to play their Road games as good as the Home's. Therefore, the Nets suffered another two losses by the end of the November, losing the lead to Charlotte Bobcats, who lost merely 2 games then.

Image

The Nets also lost 2 games in this period, both in road. The Nets, along with Utah Jazz and Los Angles Clippers, were yet undefeated at home. The schedule for the Nets was quite easy in the beginning of the season since they played most of the games at home though.

Image

The Nets eventually suffered their 1st back to back loss by the end of the 2007 year. Although they were still excellent in the league, they were not even the top 2 seed in the East. Charlotte and Boston had taken their place.

Image

The Nets were able to bounce back with a 6 game winning streak in this period. The competition was still brutal and Phoenix Suns, who started 0-3 at the beginning of the season, took the league lead after a 25 game winning streak!

Image

The Nets had a pretty good record recectly and a 48 pts win in Minnesota set the team franchise record. The Jazz and Bobcats were the 1st seed in West during this period.

Image

The Nets continued to winning games in this period, while their road winning percentage was still somewhere around 50%. The Suns and Bobcats were the 1st seed in West during this period.

Image

The Nets suffered some tough time. They lost their 1st home game, and then experienced their first 3 game losing streak in this season. The Nets were then left over 5 games behind the Bobcats and Celtics.

Image

The Nets won almost all the games in this period, and a more exciting fact is that they were already in Play-off. Besides, a 125-60 victory against Pacers set another franchise record. The Nets had shown to the world that they were elite title contender.

Image

The end of the season eventually came. The Nets finished the season with a 61-21 record, 3rd in the East and 5th in the league. What a world! A team with 60+ wins were even unable to guarantee a 2nd round home advantage in the play-off. The play-off was just around the corner, how would the Nets do?

Regular Season Preview3:

The Standing:

Image

There's something that never happened to previous NBA games before --- All the top 6 teams got 60+ wins during the regular season, and the Phoenix Suns were an amazing 70-12 team. However, it's undoubted that two of those 60+ win teams wouldn't even make the conference final. The NBA was becoming tougher and more competitive, as I believe.

Image

Teams with 45+ wins were also in hunt for the conference final tickets and even the final. Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs and Los Angles Lakers were title contenders as well. Their existence would make the play-off more dramatic. Never underestimate the energy of those old guys in Pistons and Spurs.

Image

There were still some teams hoping to clinch the 2nd round, while teams like the Warriors and Raptors were eventually able to make the play-off. For most of the teams at this level, even a play-off game(not series) win would gratify them a lot. Still, remember that every team is dangerous in play-off series.

Image

I feel so bad for teams who fought an entire season for play-off tickets but failed. The Nuggets, Heat and Kings were unfortunate to miss the play-off. The Supersonics and Rockets were once in the play-off hunt, while they fell apart by the beginning of April. Needless to mention the tough competition for those elite play-off teams.

Image

Those teams were more miserable. Not only didn't they successfully clinch the play-off series, nor did they get a better chance for the NBA lottery draft picks. Still, some of the teams like the Trailblazers and Magic started poorly but continued to fight. Let's show our respect for the teams who played real Basketball.

Image

When you have no chance to clinch the play-off, the best choice for you is to tank for the season in order to win the lottery. That sounds a wise idea and I believe the GMs of Timberwolves, Pacers and Knicks got their wishes. Nonetheless, the league was extremely unsatisfied with this behavior, so don't be surprised if none of the bottom 3 teams won the lottery.

The Western Conference:

Image
Image
Image

The Western Conference was strong, indeed. 7 of the 8 play-off teams won more than 45 wins, 5 of them got 50+ wins and the top 3 teams were over 60 wins. The play-off in the Western Conference would be exciting to watch, with Phoenix Suns VS Golden State Warriors, two teams with the best offense among the league. The match-up of Utah Jazz and New Orleans Hornets would be interesting, too. The matches between young PGs Chris Paul and Deron Williams would be a feast for the audience. Besides, don't forget the Spurs VS the Lakers. The two teams that dominated the Western Conference in the 21st century. The only embarrassing fact of the West was that the league's worst team, Minnesota Timberwolves, also happened to be in this conference, with a disastrous 11-71 record.

The Eastern Conference:

Image
Image
Image

The Eastern Conference was surely much better than the previous years. 3 teams were able to clinch 60+ wins while two teams finished with over 65 wins in the regular season. Boston Celtics, who acquired two superstars during the off-season, were ready to add another title in their franchise history. Charlotte Bobcats were really surprising, a team who had never made play-off before was able to lead the Eastern Conference for most of the season and finished with a 65-17 record. The bad thing about the East was that the bad teams sucked so bad and the play-off were more predictable than that of in the West.

Regular Season Preview4:

Teams Review:

Image

The Pacific Division:

1. Phoenix Suns (70-12): The Suns had just accomplished a tremendous season, setting up a team-record 70-12, second best in the league history. The weird thing about the Suns was that they actually started the season 0-3 and then bounced back with another second best record in the league history, 25 streak wins in a row. The team offense was running perfectly under the Run-Gun system and Steve Nash was already ready for his 1st NBA ring. The Suns were believed by the most experts to win the title this year.

2. Los Angles Lakers (51-31): KG didn't come, JO didn't come, Kidd didn't come. Kobe had to carry the team by himself still. However, the Lakers weren't in injury trouble this season and the team finished the season with 51 wins, a pretty nice record though. Kobe averaged 40+ ppg and scored over 3400 pts in the entire season, becoming the 2nd NBA player to average more than 40 ppg. The team still needed other guys to contribute in order to go further in the play-off. San Antonio would be a tough test for Kobe and the Lakers.

3. Los Angles Clippers (46-36): The Clippers enjoyed themselves so much in Los Angles. Sure they did, since they had a team record breaking 37 wins at home, while they merely managed to win 9 games in road. Elton Brand had shown people how good he could be, averaged 27.6 ppg and 11.8 rpg for the Clippers. The team used to have a chance to be the 4th seed, but the terrible road performance and the injury of Chris Kaman shot them down. The series between Mavericks and Clippers would be interesting to watch, though.

4. Golden State Warriors (41-41): The Warriors had a terrible start as they did in last season, well, it doesn't prevent them from making the play-off. They were again the 8th seed and the mission for them was simple as they did last time, to upset the 1st seed. Would they be able to do it? I can't say it's possible and the Suns were definitely not the Mavericks in last season. Still, Baron Davis was the threat to any teams, and Stephen Jackson was also ready to face the new challenge. Let's take a look at how good the Warriors would perform in the post-season games.

5. Sacramento Kings (37-45): The Kings were a play-off team for half of the season before the long road trip and Artest's injury slow them down. The team was still pretty talented, but they played the game unorganizedly and the team chemistry didn't seem to go well. Still, the Kings had a promising future and if they would improve their road performance and play teamwork, they would be a threat in the West.

The Northwest Division:

1. Utah Jazz (62-20): Experts didn't expected the Jazz to be as good as what they were in last season. Ironically, the Jazz was even better. Boozer and Deron Williams continued to developing into the league's best duo, while Okur and Kirilenko were able to help. The Jazz won 39 games at home and just finished their best season after the departure of Stockton and Malone. Jerry Sloan was then able to claim that the great Jazz team was back, yes they were.

2. Denver Nuggets (39-43): The Nuggets were believed to be a title contender in this season, but they went far beyond their expectation. Allen Iverson scored 30.2 points per game, but he took so much shots and Carmelo Anthony found it hard to get the ball. Besides, the Nuggets were a terrible home team, finished their season with a sub-50% home winning percentage. Maybe it's time for George Karl to leave, at least their fans weren't patient with him any more.

3. Seattle Supersonics (34-48): The Supersonics sent Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis away, expecting Kevin Durant to develop into their new leader. This guy finished the season with 23.2 ppg on over 50% FG shooting, but the team fell. They were able to rank as an 8th seed before trading Wally away. The young team still had a lot of work to do before turning into a contender.

4. Portland Trailblazers (29-53): The Trailblazers were miserable, indeed. They lost Greg Oden and Brandon Roy for nearly half of the season and were unable to compete for a play-off ticket when the two players were back. Still, coach Mcmillan did a nice job joining the team together, and they did play teamwork and tough defense. The Blazers were believed to have bright future.

5. Minnesota Timberwolves (11-71): Remember the last team that lost 70+ games in a season? Well, there's no need to think about that since the Wolves just showed us how terrible a team can be. AI Jefferson was not the answer for the Wolves as he finished the season with merely 9 ppg and 10 rpg. The team needed a real leader, probably a new coach as well. But I'm not sure, what I'm 100 percent sure is that they would continue to suck in the next few years.

11-71?! I think we all know who will get the #1 draft pick.. :D
They probably won't "suck" for the next few years, but hopefully the T-Wolves will be alright. On the other hand, 70-12?! That's tight!
Not bad so far, a little grammar work will do and make your text smaller.
AND I'd be sure it could take only 1 post to fit all that in ;)

The Southwest Division:

1. Dallas Mavericks (60-22): The Mavs had a nice season though. They finished the season with 60 wins and clinched the lead of the Southwest Division. Dirk Nowitzki had another MVP performance, averaged 37.1 ppg and 9.2 rpg. Still, it's hard to give any credit to them after the upset they suffered in last Play-off. In order to clinch the 2nd round, the conference final and even the NBA final, Avery Johnson had a lot of work to do this year.

2. San Antonio Spurs (56-26): The Spurs were able to clinch the 4th seed of the Western Conference, which gained them the home-court advantage in the 1st round. Nonetheless, the Spurs had several troubles this year. Their players were getting older and they seemed to be unfamiliar with how to play home game. Their home record was merely 25-16 while the road record was second only to Phoenix. Still, don't underestimate those old guys, they were ready for play-off.

3. New Orleans Hornets (45-37): The Hornets were in the play-off for the 1st time as a West team. The trade of Tyson Chandler for Chris Webber didn't make them struggle, while the acquisition of Ben Gordon in the mid-season gave them plenty of helps to make the play-off. Chris Paul was developing into one of the league's best PGs and the Hornets now had one of the league's best start-five. Don't be surprised if you found the Hornets in the second round, even the Conference final.

4. Houston Rockets (33-49): The Rockets had an even worse record than the 2005-2006 season, but this time it had nothing to do with the injury of their two superstar --- T-Mac and Yao. The Rockets found it hard to close out the game and when they led by less than 5 pts after the 3rd quarter, they tended to lose those close games. The coach was unhappy with the team's ability to handle pressure, and how could he do to solve it? That's what he should do in the upcoming off-season.

5. Memphis Grizzlies (18-64): The Grizzlies still sucked, even with Paul Gasol playing all of their 82 regular season's games. Paul Gasol, who averaged 27+ ppg and 9+ rpg, found his efforts in vain due to the non-existent team defense. As far as I remember, the Grizzlies were the best defensive team in 2005-2006 season when they finished a 49-33 season as the 5th seed in the league. The team needed to rebuild, and for Paul Gasol, maybe it's time to let him go.

The Atlantic Division:

1. Boston Celtics (67-15): Everyone expected the Celtics' big 3 to have a great season, but even the loyalest Boston fans wouldn't say the team would go as high as 67 wins in Big 3's first season. Needless to say, the frontcourt of the Celtics was terrific after the addition of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen played a great role as the 3 point shooter and the last shot taker. Paul Pierce was still the team leader and the team chemistry was remarkably perfect. No one doubted that the Celtics were a title contender this year.

2. New Jersey Nets (61-21): The Nets had a solid regular season performance, finishing with their best regular season record in team history(The records in ABA doesn't count). The acquisition of Tyson Chandler and Kenyon Martin made their front court as perfect as their back court and the Nets blew out the opponents in victories by 20+ pts. The team also had a league-best home record 40-1 with the only loss to the Spurs. The Nets were as good of a title contender as the Celtics.

3. Toronto Raptors (40-42): It didn't seem to be that hard for the Raptors to make the play-off in the beginning of the season and they led the Miami Heat by as much as 6 games before getting stuck in the 6 road games streak. The Raptors eventually managed to eliminate the Heat by the end of the last game in the regular season. Chris Bosh was the league's 3rd scorer, but the team got little help from the other players. The role players needed to take over the game sometimes if they want to go further in the play-off.

4. Philadelphia 76ers (28-54): The 76ers had a terrible start in the beginning of the season and they never recovered. The 28-54 record was even worse than last season, to be honest. The improvement of team young leader Iguodala is what excited most of the 76ers fans in this season. Iguodala was able to make the All NBA team 2, indicating that the 76ers had bright future though. The team may need another year to be an elite play-off team.

5. New York Knicks (15-67): The addition of Zach Randolph had no impact? No, his impact was huge and it just went the wrong direction, sending the Knicks to a much worse position as they did in last year. Isiah Thomas eventually realized how hard it was for him to organize this team. Besides, the Knicks had a league-worst road record 3-38. How long would it take for the Knicks to regain their power as a contender? Well, it's so hard to predict.

The Central Division:

1. Detroit Pistons (58-24): The Pistons were the 1st in this division for another time without any contests. Even though the loss of Chris Webber made experts believe that the team was gonna have trouble and rebuild, but they were definitely wrong. The Pistons still played nice teamwork and showed the league how good they could be. However, the team hadn't clinched the final since Saunders' arrival. I can't guarantee what might happen to the team if they failed again this year.

2. Cleveland Cavaliers (49-33): The Cavs weren't become any better before the trade deadline, while Lebron James was able to lead his team to the play-off as the 5th seed. Lebron finished the season with 30.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg and 6.7 apg, and made the All NBA team 1. Nonetheless, the contribution of James was by no means to lead the Cavs to further victories. They desperately needed other guys to show up and give Lebron a hand if they wanted further achievement.

3. Chicago Bulls (41-41): The Bulls were believed to be a title contender during the beginning of the season, but they disappointed most of their fans. Still, the Bulls were able to make the play-off as the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference. The trade of Ben Gordon for Peterson was considered a terrible trade for the team, while it was since that moment that the Bulls made a run to clinch the play-off. Their opponent was the Charlotte Bobcats, who lacked play-off experience for sure. Could the Bulls make an upset?

4. Milwaukee Bucks (32-50): The Bucks finished a season with a record exactly as the expert predicted in the pre-season --- to Miss the play-off. Michael Redd was the team scorer for another time, while Andrew Bogut eventually developed into the team's inside force. The Bucks were in the plau-off hunt in the mid-season and were unable to hold on when the other teams began with a run. Maybe trading their best players and starting to completely rebuild is the best idea for this team.

5. Indiana Pacers (13-69): The Pacers finished a season with the 2nd worst record in the league, despite the big efforts from Jermaine O'neal who grabbed nearly 28 ppg and 9.5 rpg. The most unbearable thing for the Pacers, on the other hand, was that they suffered too many blow-out games in loss, especially the humiliating 60-125 loss to the Nets. Denny Grander, on the other hand, had shown some potentials to make the team front office see the future of this team. In a word, the 2007-2008's season wasn't the Pacers' season.

The Southeast Division:

1. Charlotte Bobcats (65-17): Anyone ever expected the Bobcats to be that excellent in the beginning of the season? The Charlotte team did surprise us a lot with a 65-17 record, while leading the Eastern Conference for nearly half of the season. Besides, the team accomplished a 16-0 sweep over the Southeast division. Of course, the addition of Jason Richardson was the key to their success, while Okafor and Wallace also contribute to their team's breakthrough. The only trouble for them was that they didn't have any play-off experience before, so how far could the Bobcats go in the play-off?

2. Washington Wizards (44-38): The Wizards weren't in the play-off hunt before they acquired Wally Szeczerbiak from the Supersonics. The team was then able to go for a long winning streak to gain the play-off ticket. Arenas was impressive still, averaged 24+ ppg and 6+ apg, while every role players contributed significantly in this team. The Wizards, on the other hand, were a terrible defensive team. The match-up between the Nets and Wizards would be interesting though.

3. Miami Heat (39-43): Was this the first time that Shaq had ever missed the play-off? I don't quite know but the Heat did have a horrible season that couldn't even guarantee them a play-off ticket. Wade had a much worse performance than the last season, and apparently the injury in last season made him less quicker and less stronger. Shaq was already old and does the Miami Heat need to rebuild? Well, this is the answer that Pat Riley should've known, right?

4. Orlando Magic (25-57): The magic was ready to have a nice season before Dwight Howard was seriously injured. Howard was averaging 25 ppg and 12 rpg before the injury and the team lost most of their games without Howard. Another noticeable fact about the Magic was that they used to rank at the bottom of the league for a month and had a 3-22 home record before going on a 8-2 performance in March. Still, who would have guessed how good they might be with a healthy Dwight Howard?

5. Atlanta Hawks (21-61): For the Hawks fans, they were already pretty adjusted to their team's bad performance like this. The Hawks hadn't been able to make the play-off for years and this year was of course not the moment for them to make a breakthrough yet. Perhaps it would still take the Hawks several years to be an elite play-off team, but did their fans still have patience with this team?

Regular Season Preview5:

Personal Awards:

1. Regular Season MVP: Kobe Bryant
Image
Kobe is the 2nd NBA player to average 40+ ppg in regular season, deserves the MVP award.

2. Most Improved Player: Kobe Bryant
Image
Why it's still Kobe Bryant? Well, he did improve himself a lot during this season.

3. Defensive Player of the Year: Jason Kidd
Image
Image
If you doubt this, please remember he grabbed 6+ spg in a season with at least 10 triple doubles(Points, Assists and Steals).

4. Rookie Of The Year: Kevin Durant
Image
No doubt this award went for Kevin Durant, he just had a season that comparable to Jordan's rookie year.

5. Six Man of The Year: Michael Finley
Image
It's a kind of pity that Finley didn't win the starting spot, but his performance was much better than some of the starters.

6. Coach Of the Year: Mike D'Antoni
Image
Image
D'Antoni was on hot seat after a 0-3 start, however, the team was then able to go on several long winning streaks to lead the league with a 70-12 record. That's so impressive.
