Davis Scores 34 in Win Over Hawks
The Warriors attack led by Baron Davis produced 130 points in their first game victory over the Hawks. Davis, who also got his teammates involved by dishing out nine assists, keyed the Warrior offense that scored 70 points in the 2nd half. Davis' backcourt partner, Monta Ellis joined in the offensive explosion and scored 23 points, 5 assists, and 5 boards.
The Hawks kept it close through three quarters. The Warriors quickly doused all hopes of the Hawks when they went on a 10-2 run, shortly after Joe Johnson picked up his 5th foul early in the 4th. Davis, who capped off the 10-2 run with a dunk that knocked down both Acie Law and Speedy Claxton was booed loudly by the remaining fans in the arena. This booing was the only sign of life from the crowd during the 4th quarter.
Johnson and Marvin Williams led the Hawks with 27 points and 24 points respectively. Williams also grabbed 11 boards and pocketed 4 steals. Hawks rookie big man Al Horford scored 8 points and 12 rebounds and fellow rookie Acie Law scored 16 points and dished out 11 assists.
Hawks coach Mike Woodson was reportedly very disappointed with his team's defense. Woodson, who expected his team to tighten up on defense in the 2nd half, saw the Hawks play worse defense than they did in the 1st half.
Notes: Al Harrington, who Nelson wanted to occasionally come off the bench to provide a spark, struggled in this game only scoring 7 points, grabbing 1 rebound and 1 assist. He also shot 2 for 7 from the field, and was 0 for 3 from downtown. Patrick O'Bryant, whose length and athleticism might get him more minutes, grabbed 5 boards in 12 minutes of playing time. Rookie Brandan Wright scored 3 points and grabbed 8 boards in 18 minutes. While fellow rookie Marco Belinelli played in only 2 minutes of garbage time recording no statistics.
