(07)Raptors (5-6): Bosh & Bargs - Week 3 Recap Up

Preamble: This dynasty will be started with the 06-07 opening night rosters, and the first season will be simmed. I'll approach all team decisions as realistically as possible. I'll be firing/hiring coaches around the league, as well as occasionally re-working CPU teams line-ups for maximum realism. I'll be using the Draft Mod, so many of this year's rookies will be in season 2, which is when I'll start playing games. More updates to come soon.

Note: Turns out I won't be using the draft mod for this dynasty. Everytime I run it, it assigns incorrect heights and weights to some players, e.g. Josh McRoberts - 6'1", 185 lbs. This would be OK if it were only incorrect physical attributes, cause I could edit it, but I think what's happening is some players are being assigned the stats of others, and I'm not prepared to do all the work necessary to change that. So no real rookies, but whatever.

Oh, and for anyone wondering why I'm back with an 07 dynasty, well, I don't trust Live 08 to be any good, so I decided to not buy any more EA NBA games until they've released a couple of good games in a row.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

Snarky, feel free to post any roster suggestions in the thread. I'm not sure how many moves I'll make, but ideas are always welcome.

BD5, like I said above, I'm not sure how many moves I'll make, but there will be some. Bosh and Bargnani are staying, but I'll probably move either Ford or Calderon in the off-season, and I'm already desperately trying to move Fred Jones.

First year recap will be up pretty soon. I'm about halfway through simming it.

Thanks again, everyone.

Snarky - I'm not so big on Cato. He's really old, and all he can do rebound. He wouldn't get any PT on my team. Plus, the 1st season has been simmed, recap up...right now!

NBA AWARDS

Note: I decide the winner of each award, cause the computer has no freaking clue. So if these awards seem eerily probable, it's because I'm picking the winners, not EA.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
KOBE BRYANT (LAL) | 78 GP | 26.6 PPG | 4.4 RPG | 5.3 APG | 1.99 SPG | 0.56 BPG | .500 FG% | .380 3PT% | .856 FT% |

Kobe won his first MVP award not by virtue of his statistical dominance - his points per game dropped by about 9 - but by his improved leadership and ability to trust his teammates. Don't let his assist totals fool you, Kobe was making the pass that lead to the assist. From training camp his focus was simply on winning, and that's exactly what the Lakers did, posting their best record in the post-Shaq era, one win shy of 50. Had Kobe played all 82 games, they likely would have won 50. The Lakers were 0-4 in games Kobe missed.

RUNNER-UP: TRACY MCGRADY (HOU) | 75 GP | 30.2 PPG | 4.3 RPG | 7.6 APG | 2.32 SPG | 0.72 BPG | .462 FG% | .353 3PT% | .761 FT% |

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
BRANDON ROY (POR) | 82 GP | 20.1 PPG | 3.4 RPG | 5.6 APG | 1.70 SPG | 0.50 BPG | .454 FG% | .500 3PT% | .823 FT% |

Roy was an absolute lock for ROY. He was head and shoulders above all other rookies, and has become the Blazers de facto franchise player.

RUNNER-UP: ANDREA BARGNANI (TOR) | 78 GP | 8.3 PPG | 7.1 RPG | 3.7 APG | 0.63 SPG | 1.22 BPG | .430 FG% | .384 3PT% | .720 FT% |

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
SHAWN MARION (PHO) | 79 GP | 16.3 PPG | 9.2 RPG | 2.0 APG | 1.97 SPG | 2.38 BPG | .447 FG% | .297 3PT% | .799 FT% |

Shawn Marion captured his first (and long overdue) Defensive Player of the Year Award, narrowly missing the 2 BPG, 2 SPG milestone. He defends everyone from Tony Parker to Kevin Garnett effectively, and his rebounding ability often keys the Suns fast break.

RUNNER-UP: GERALD WALLACE (CHA) | 82 GP | 20.3 PPG | 8.7 RPG | 1.2 APG | 1.96 SPG | 2.11 BPG | .447 FG% | .325 3PT% | .622 FT% |

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
LUKE WALTON (LAL) | 78 GP | 15.0 PPG | 6.0 RPG | 4.7 APG | 1.10 SPG | 0.63 BPG | .429 FG% | .373 3PT% | .701 FT% |

Walton improved in every statistical category except FT% to earn this year's MIP award. He tripled his points per game and blocks, and doubled (or almost-doubled) his rebounds, assists, and steals, all while shooting an improved percentage from the floor.

RUNNER-UP: JARRETT JACK (POR) | 82 GP | 14.8 PPG | 2.6 RPG | 6.5 APG | 1.10 SPG | 0.46 BPG | .415 FG% | .345 3PT% | .818 FT% |

6TH MAN AWARD
BOBBY JACKSON (HOU) | 79 GP | 14.2 PPG | 2.3 RPG | 4.8 APG | 0.94 SPG | 0.23 BPG | .440 FG% | .376 3PT% | .805 FT% |

Bobby Jackson was traded to Houston days prior to the trade deadline, and the Rockets initially played him their starting PG. After about 15 games and the Rockets struggling, Rafer Alston reclaimed his starting duties, and Houston rolled off 8 wins to end the season.

RUNNER-UP: JOSE CALDERON (TOR) | 77 GP | 9.9 PPG | 1.8 RPG | 4.0 APG | 0.71 SPG | 0.22 BPG | .436 FG% | .231 3PT% | .801 FT% |

COACH OF THE YEAR
SCOTT SKILES (CHI) 51-31

Skiles guided the young Bulls to their best season since MJ's departure, claiming 1st place in the East. Though the Bulls battled injuries, notably to Kirk Hinrich and Andres Nocioni, Skiles always found a way to win. The Bulls are also nasty to play against. They're smart, physical, and defensive - in other words, perfectly built for play-off basketball. Now if only they had a low-post threat...

RUNNER-UP: MAURICE CHEEKS (PHI) 50-32

i F'n love this dynasty already

Tmac - league leading scorer - yep yep

Marv Williams - rookie challenge mvp - what a line!

Dwight dunk champ - you go big fella

Tmac/yao - western AS starters - sawweeeet; don't think this ever happens in my dynasty unfortunately just because they can't/don't pull the same stats in comp v comp watched games vs simmed games :(

1/2/07 - TOR trades G Fred Jones to DEN for F Eduardo Najera - expiring contract yea? i actually was diggin' Najera's steady contributions and was thinking to resign but he was re-packaged in trade unfortunately;

2/22/07 - DET trades G Chauncey Billups, F Tayshaun Prince, C Dale Davis to DEN for C Nene, G Andre Miller, F Linas Kleiza - wow  franchise facelift no doubt; is this before the AI trade?

ALL NBA 1ST TEAM
C - Yao Ming (HOU)
SF - Tracy McGrady (HOU)

again, sawweeeet! great start MC5; this is really feeling like a real dynasty in the make and not just a season played; looking forward to playoff recaps and off-season (Y)

Thanks, BD5.

Najera actually has one year left on his contract, but it's 1 less than Jones. Plus, my team really needed some defense and toughness, and Najera gives you just that. Besides, he's European, so as the Raptors I almost have to trade for him.

The Detroit-Denver trade was prior to the AI trade. I started with 06-07 opening night rosters, so AI and C-Webb are still in Philly, Murphy and Bumleavy are still in Golden State, etc. That was a forced trade by me, though. I figure there's almost always at least 1 blockbuster trade per year, and since both Denver and Detroit were really struggling at the trade deadline, I thought a major shakeup was in order for both teams. Detroit would have been a lot better following the deal, but Nene got injured for the last month and a half of the season.

Just for fun, here's both team's final rosters.

DETROIT
C - Nene, Nazr Mohammed
PF - Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess, Amir Johnson
SF - Linas Kleiza, Carlos Delfino, Ronald Dupree
SG - Rip Hamilton, Flip Murray, Mardy Collins
PG - Andre Miller, Lindsay Hunter, Will Blalock

DENVER
C - Marcus Camby, Dale Davis, Jamal Sampson, Johan Petro
PF - Kenyon Martin, Joe Smith, Reggie Evans
SF - Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith
SG - Tayshaun Prince, Fred Jones, Julius Hodge, Yakhouba Diawara
PG - Chauncey Billups, Earl Boykins

After the off-season, I'll be doing a team-by-team preview/review, which will help shed some light on why certain moves were made. Should be good.

Marquis, thanks man. I'll try not to disappoint. :)

How did you force a trade if you were controlling the Raptors? Also you kinda ripped off the Pistons.. They now have a major hole at SF.. Did you just do it so you could make it easier for you in the Eastern Conference? lol

I forced trades by .dbf editing. And I disagree with your assessment of the Pistons-Nuggets deal. Sure, Detroit has a big hole at SF, but they filled the big hole they had at C with one of the best young big men in the league. I think it was a pretty fair deal - both teams got 2 really good players and a rotation guy. The only reason Detroit wasn't higher in the standings was because Nene got injured shortly after the Pistons got him. And the only reason they got swept in the first round was cause Rip Hamilton got injured in the 1st game of the series.

Some interesting matchups in the playoffs. Too bad Mavericks were defeated by Suns, but seems that they are unstoppable in simulation.

Marquis, I think that was actually the first time the Suns have won the title in one of my 07 dynasties. Usually it's the Spurs, occasionally the Mavs or Rockets as well. But they were definitely unstoppable in the playoffs, only losing 2 games (1 to HOU, 1 to DAL).

ASDF, this will be more than solid. It will be spectacular. Like I said in the first post, I'm almost acting as GM for all 30 teams, doing things like hiring/firing head coaches, changing player rotations of struggling teams or teams with injuries, making trades and signing free agents (all via .dbf editing, duh). So hopefully there's actually a realistic amount of roster movement. One of the things that annoys me most about playing LIVE's dynasty mode is that quite often, like 5 or 6 years in, many teams will still have basically the same starting lineups, which is total crap. So in this dynasty, if for instance a team that should be really good is under-achieving (i.e. DEN/DET), then roster moves will be made. Also, it sucks being in like year 20 and having Jerry Sloan win Coach of the Year. Jerry Sloan will probably be dead in 20 years. He certainly won't still be coaching Utah.

Off-season recap/season preview up next. Lots of crazy stuff happened!

How egotistical of you to say; especially considering that you are automatically hurt by the fact that you don't have real rookies. I'm sure this will be good, and the presentation has been spot-on, but still.

I know sarcasm/subtle humor doesn't translate well on the internets, but it was said with tongue planted firmly in cheek, or whatever the internet equivalent would be.

Thanks for reading, though. I hope I can live up to the lofty expectations I've set for myself.

Oh, and the lack of real rookies isn't too big a deal for me, cause I'm hoping this will last at least a few more seasons, which means I'd be stuck with CPU generated rookies next year, anyway. Plus, like most things, I'm editing the rookies so that there isn't a retarded amount of 6'1" shooting guards, or players with 90 speed but 40 quickness, or 90 dunking but 40 jumping, or sub 20 awareness, etc.

OFF-SEASON RECAP

DRAFT RECAP

Note: I decided to honor the previously acquired draft picks in big trades, such as Atlanta giving up their 1st rounder from the Joe Johnson trade, or Chicago getting NY's pick from the Curry deal, as they were big pieces of the trade. If Phoenix doesn't get a 1st rounder from the Hawks, there's no way they deal Joe Johnson, so in the interest of realism, I took that into consideration. I may have forgotten a couple, but what's done is done. I'll include the scouting report for all lottery picks, as well. No 2nd round recap, cause no one gives a shit about the 2nd round, anyway.

ROUND 1
1. CHICAGO (via NYK) - Gonzalo Rodriguez, SF (6'7" - 231lbs - 23yrs - North Carolina)

- excellent shooting stroke
- very talented shot blocker
- good offensive awareness
2. WASHINGTON - Marcos Leon, PF (6'9" - 220lbs - 21yrs - Colorado)
- comfortable shooting the ball
- speed a minor concern
- injuries a major concern
3. PORTLAND - Gary Webb, PG (5'10" - 203lbs - 21yrs - Tennessee)
- below average quickness
- hasn't missed many games due to injury
- solid jump shooter
4. NEW ORLEANS - Furious Gomez, PF (6'6" - 267lbs - 22yrs - SMU)
- hasn't missed many games due to injury
- definitely not a clutch shooter
- finishes dunks with authority
5. CHARLOTTE - Jim Jackman, PF (6'8" - 221lbs - 23yrs - Stanford)
- regularly outworks opponents on the offensive glass
- below average quickness
- great conditioning
6. LA CLIPPERS - Lawrence Connors, SF (6'7" - 235lbs - 20yrs - Gergetown)
- understands how to play the game on the offensive end
- poor lateral quickness
- somewhat injury prone
7. MILWAUKEE - Victor Torres, PF (6'11" - 207lbs - 21yrs - SW Texas State)
- very poor height on jump
- works hard to reach his potential
- no problem hitting free throws
8. PHOENIX (via ATL) - Steven Ortiz, SF (6'7" - 241lbs - 21yrs - Kansas)
- very good strength
- questionable ability to learn
- good defensive rebounder
9. MEMPHIS - Ivan Dickey, PG (6'2" - 214lbs - 21yrs - Georgia Tech)
- absolutely loves to dunk
- liability on the defensive end

- good dribbler
- lacks fundamentals
- consistent from the free throw line
11. MINNESOTA - Stanislav Obradovic, C (6'11" - 288lbs - 23yrs - Europe)
- good awareness on offense
- very slow off the dribble
- doesn't get injured very easily

- consistent shooter

- defensive awareness below average

16. GOLDEN STATE - Kareem Coleman, SG (6'3" - 200lbs - 22yrs - Utah)

Holy cow, a KG trade to ORLANDO! Sick combo with Dwight right there. Warriors ripping off Blazers, IMO, but Randolph is a cancer...although not so much in-game.

And that UNC first pick for the Bulls....hahahaha, Knicks.

Not true. I'm making a few trades myself. The vast majority are done by the computer. But yes, those 2 deals were mine, and an explanation will come in the season previews. Believe me, I am not making trades just to screw over 1 team or another. There is a rhyme and reason to all this, you'll see.
