The Story So Far...

Led by the one-two punch of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, the Los Angeles Lakers returned to the forefront of sports pages across the world with their Championship Triumph.

After rising from the dead in the Western Conference Finals against a very talented Portland side, the Lakers stormed to victory in the NBA Finals to crown themselves as World Champions.

Now, entering the 2000-01 season, they are led by the same core group of players, trying to take fans back to an era of magic and showtime.

Will the Lakers repeat? Will they begin to write their own dynasty and a new chapter for the NBA to follow?

The Lakers will be led by Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. O'Neal is a monster in the paint and probably the most dominant player in the NBA right now while Bryant came onto the NBA scene with his brilliant performance in the play-offs. The swingman and big man make the most scary duo in the League today.

Backing them up are veterans Horace Grant, Robert Horry, Rick Fox, Ron Harper and Brian Shaw who all bring experience to the table. Each know their part in the team and bring their own skills with them. Harper, having played for Jax in Chicago. knows the Triangle offence well. Horace Grant is getting old but can still support the team by being a nuisance in the paint. Brian Shaw played with Shaw in Orlando and is also a smart player. Rick Fox hustles, scores when needed to and is a team player. And Robert Horry is a Will Smith look-alike and showed his scoring ability with the Houston Rockets.

Along with the veteran players come the less experienced rookies and second year guys. Many of whom Laker fans probably don't know of. Although players like Derek Fisher, Tyronn Lue, Devean George and Mark Madsen won't be well-known today, chances are you will be eharing about them in the future.

After upsetting the Portland Trailblazers last post-season, the Lakers look like they will have every chance to make the Finals again. However, they face tough competition from the likes of Sacramento, San Antonio and Portland.

Let's hope Shaq and Kobe can lead this team to victory.

The Lakers open their season against the Blazers.

Joke During the Game

PORTLAND, Oct. 31 (Ticker) -- In a re-match of last season's Western Conference Finals, the first game of the NBA season wasn't decided until the final moments of the match.

The Lakers relied on Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant to carry the load. O'Neal scored a game high 33 points (13-20 FG, 7-15 FT), 14 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks. Bryant finished with 29 points (11-24 FG, 1-1 3PT, 6-11 FT), 6 rebounds, 5 assists and added 2 steals and a block for good measure.

The Blazers' balanced offence countered the Lakers' star power. It was lead by Rasheed Wallace's 22 points (9-18 FG, 1-1 3PT, 3-3 FT) and 8 rebounds. Arvydas Sabonis (15), Steve Smith (14), Damon Stoudamire (11) and Scottie Pippen (11) all scored in double figures.

The Lakers dominated the Blazers on the glass and took advantage of it by repeatedly getting the ball to Shaq. It was just like how Lakers coach Phil Jackson wanted, "I emphasised that we got to get Shaquille the ball and that's what we did. We came up with a win."

The game was close for the full 48 minutes of action. Although the Lakers never led in the game until the final minute, the Blazers never led by more than 4 points.

The match was filled with many highlights and might preview what this following NBA seaosn may be all about; scoring. Kobe Bryant had a spectacular dunk over Blazers Scottie Pippen. Shaquille O'Neal blocked a Rasheed Wallace shot right into the stands late in the second quarter. Damon Stoudamire made back-to-back threes and then followed that up with a nice alley-oop pass to Bonzi Wells for Wells' only basket of the night.

With the Blazers ahead 94-90 with 1:05 left on the clock, Kobe Bryant stripped the ball of off Stoudamire and made the lay up on the fast break. Then O'Neal blocked Sabonis' shot on the other end of the floor and Rick Fox passed to an open Bryant for a trey. With LA up 95-94 with 41.3 seconds left, the home team called a time out.

Portland's Steve Smith uncharacteristically threw up an air ball as the shot clock expired and O'Neal rebounded the ball before sending a long pass that sailed into the hands of rookie PG Mike Penberthy for an easy bucket. With a chance to tie the game, Scottie Pippen's three pointer with 6 seconds left rolled out of the rim to the booing of the Rose Garden crowd. Bryant then made two free throws to pull the game out of reach from Portland.

"It was a great game to start the season," Bryant said, "We're aiming to do well this season and this definitely puts us in the right direction."

October

Image

The Lakers squeezed one game in before the month finished and it was a win over the Portland Trailblazers. The team looked good in the preseason with a 5-2 record in exhibition games. Kobe Bryant, for one, looks like he has developed a fade away jumper and gotten stronger. Shaq looks like he may have lost some weight while the rest of the team looks like they are ready for another long NBA season.

Phil Jackson, before the season started, made his intentions and aims clear for the coming season. He spoke of how he wanted team work and from the first game, it looked like the Laker team had been playing together for a very long time.

“The offence runs like fluid and the defence is tough. The way the Lakers play together on both ends of the floor and how they interact on and off the court seems perfect,” A Western Conference Scout stated.

Player Reports

C Shaquille O’Neal 33 ppg 14 rpg 5 apg 2 bpg .650 FG%
- The self proclaimed Superman dominated inside as usual and looked good in the Lakers’ season opener. However, his free throw shooting still remains his kryptonite but he is shooting close to 50% from the stripe (for now). Grade: A

PF Horace Grant 8 ppg 9 rpg 3 apg 1 bpg 1 spg
- Gives Lakers another big body to feed the ball to but most importantly he provides the hustle and defence that LA needs in the paint and what other teams lack. Grant will be relied upon by his team mates to lead by example this season. Grade: B+

SF Rick Fox 12 ppg .500 FG%
- Not much to say about Fox for now but he is the Lakers’ third scoring option and he did do a semi efficient job at it. He’s got to make sure he makes the open basket, run on the fast break, play hard defence and hustle. Grade: C+

SG Kobe Bryant 29 ppg 6 rpg 5 apg 2spg .460 FG% 1.000 3P%
- The young Bryant looks better than ever with a more consistent jump shot and having gotten a lot more bulkier than last season. This showed against the Blazers after Bryant was all over the court as he padded his stats up. If he keeps this up, he will be looking to have a great season. Grade: A-

PG Ron Harper 8 ppg 3 rpg 3 apg 1 tpg
- Experienced and knowledgeable in the Triangle Offence, Harper’s job is to play defence, shoot the ball and handle the rock proficiently. Harp does all of that and does everything Jax needs him to do which unfortunately doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. Grade: B+

SG Isaiah Rider N/A
- The problematic guard didn’t get off the bench against one of his former teams in Portland but fans and others will be hoping he can be the third option scorer and sixth man Los Angeles needs after losing Glen Rice. Grade: N/A

PF Robert Horry N/A
- Horry registered a did not play but he is also a known commodity with his clutch scoring abilities. Grade: N/A

PG Derek Fisher N/A
- The young PG Fisher is slowly learning how to run a team. He is a more than competent defender and ball handler. He can shoot the ball and is a left hander. He shot the lights out last play-offs. Grade: N/A

SG Brian Shaw N/A
- Old, experienced and having played with Shaq, Shaw will get his moments on the court this season although he is on the team more for off court leadership. Grade: N/A

C Greg Foster 3 ppg 1 rpg
- He will be a lightly used substitute for Shaq. His size and experience will be an advantage for the Lakers when Shaq is taken off for him. So far, he has proven that he can stay in the game for short spurts when O’Neal needs a break. Grade: B

PG Mike Penberthy 3 ppg, 4 rpg, 1 spg
- Did well in the limited time he got although many will agree that playing Fisher would be a better idea than playing Penberthy but he did play well in the first game even though he missed 4 of his 5 free throws. Grade: C

PF Mark Madsen [i]3 ppg 2 rpg[i]
- Very enthusiastic rookie and brings energy to the team. He was also on the receiving end on one of Shaq’s jokes before a preseason game. Unfortunately though all he does is hustle and that’s about it. Grade: C+

Injured Reserves

PG Tyronn Lue – Won’t crack the PG rotation for a long while. Grade: N/A
SF Slava Medvedenko – Big rookie who can shoot very well from mid-range. Grade: N/A
SF Devean George – Second year player who has the potential to be a Kobe-like scorer in the future. Grade: N/A

November Preview

Image

The Lakers will play most of the month in the Western Conference with all but two of their games next month being against West teams. At a glance, it looks like LA will have a tough time against the Spurs, Kings and Supersonics. They play Houston, Denver and the LA Clippers twice each in what should be easy match ups.

Games To Watch:

1 Nov – UTAH @ LAL: Laker fans will get to see if Karl Malone and John Stockton still have what it takes.
5 Nov – LAC @ LAL: The first of two game this month, this one being played with the Lakers at ‘Home.’
8 Nov – LAL @ SAS: A night after playing Houston, the Lakers make the Texas jump to visit the Spurs and Tim Duncan; the winners of the 1999.
24 Nov – MIN @ LAL: Fellow Western All-Star Kevin Garnett leads the Wolves to the STAPLES Centre to face Shaq and Kobe.
27 Nov – LAL @ LAC: Playing the Clippers on the other side of the hallway.
28 Nov – IND @ LAL: The Pacers visit LA for a re-match between last season’s NBA Finalists.
30 Nov – LAL @ SEA: The Lakers play on the last day of the month against Gary ‘The Glove’ Payton and the Sonics.

Report cards are lookin' pretty good, but why the hell is Desmond Mason the player of the week?

I also believe that this belongs in the 01 section, not the 06 section.

LA Lakers 135, Sacramento 101

Bryant and O’Neal Too Much for Kings

Box Score | Lakers Home | Kings Home

Image
Chris Webber gets past
Shaquille O'Neal on this play

SACRAMENTO, Nov. 17 (Ticker) – The Sacramento Kings just didn’t have enough firepower to topple their Californian rivals. Kobe Bryant led LA with 41 points (16-23 FG, 2-4 3PT, 7-8 FT), 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks. Shaquille O’Neal was equally as dominant with 37 points (17-21 FG, 2-5 FT), 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks while the troublesome Isaiah Rider made his Laker debut, hitting for 22 points (7-11 FG, 3-4 3PT, 5-5 FT) off the bench.

Chris Webber led the Kings with 36 points (17-23 FG) and 6 rebounds but his teammates couldn’t up the ante as LA dominated from the second quarter onwards, outscoring their opponents 42-16 in the second period. Vlade Divac finished with a double double of 18 points and 13 rebounds while PG Jason Williams dished out 15 assists but also turned the ball over 7 times and shot 5 for 20 from the field.

Kobe Bryant scored 31 first half points including 24 in the second quarter. His offensive prowess wasn’t the only thing that helped him lead the team as he set an example of defence too. The 4 year pro held Peja Stojakovic to a season low 12 points on 5 for 20 shooting. Bryant received a chorus of ‘boos’ after blocking two Peja trey attempts in quick succession in the third quarter.

The game began with both teams matching each other hoop for hoop. Bryant had a slow start missing his first five shots and O’Neal struggled on the defensive end. However, as the second quarter began, Phil Jackson opted to play Bryant without Shaq on the court. The move paid dividends.

Bryant came out hot and scored 11 straight points to put LA up by 8. His hot streak continued as he set a Lakers record for most points scored in a quarter formerly held by Elgin Baylor.

“Kobe shot his team to the win,” Kings’ Doug Christie, who also shot 7 for 20, stated, “We didn’t have an answer for him.”

In the second half, Bryant took a back seat for teammate Shaq as O’Neal scored the majority of his points. The big man dominated on both ends of the court including a 4 minute run where he was the only player to be scoring. He hounded Chris Webber and Vlade Divac for most of the third quarter. His presence meanwhile allowed reserve Robert Horry to block 4 shots on several Kings’ weak-side rotations.

“O’Neal means so much to this team,” Lakers forward Rick Fox said, “Without him, we wouldn’t get the shots we get.”

Troublesome Isaiah Rider made his Lakers debut in style as he came off the bench in the first quarter to score 7 points. He kept rolling and hit three treys in the last quarter to keep the Kings, who looked like they were on a scoring roll, at bay.

“Isaiah is going to be a part of this team if he does the right things,” Coach Jackson spoke of the veteran player, “He’s a good scorer and if he keeps doing well, I will think about starting him on the wing.”

The Kings looked a few steps slower than their opponents for much of the game and didn’t make the right adjustments during the game to win it. Although they held a 49-37 edge in the rebounding department, the versatile Kings didn’t use it to their advantage.

Chris Webber was only looking forward to their next game against the Lakers, “Next time, we will put up a better fight.”

I know there aren't any boxscores in Live 01, but why don't you just use the player stats at the end of the game?

Oh yeah, and in-game pictures don't hurt either.

Isiah Rider is a tool. I hope Shaq falls on him and crushes his windpipes or something.
