Bobcats Build Inaugural Roster With 18 Picks In Expansion Selection

The Charlotte Bobcats began the process of building their inaugural team by picking 19 players in the Charlotte Expansion Selection. The Bobcats selected 10 players under contract and nine restricted free agents. By the rules of the Expansion Agreement, the restricted free agents will become unrestricted free agents on July 1.

"Tonight we continue building the Bobcats organization," said Bobcats majority owner Robert L. Johnson. "Bernie and Ed have accomplished our goal of creating a team that will compete hard on the court and represent the franchise well off the court."

Charlotte selected 6 players who are under contract: Predrag Drobnjak (L.A. Clippers), Brandon Hunter (Boston), Zaza Pachulia (Orlando), Aleksandar Pavlovic (Utah), Jamal Sampson (L.A. Lakers), and Theron Smith (Memphis)

The Bobcats also chose restricted free agents Lonny Baxter (Washington), Ruben Boumtje Boumtje (Cleveland), J.R. Bremer (Golden State), Jamison Brewer (Indiana), Maurice Carter (New Orleans), Desmond Ferguson (Portland), Marcus Fizer (Chicago), Richie Frahm (Seattle), Tamar Slay (New Jersey), Jeff Trepagnier (Denver) and Loren Woods (Miami).

"This is a very exciting time for everyone involved in the birth of this franchise, from community leaders to fans, from our new season ticket holders and business partners to each member of the Bobcats organization," said Bobcats President and Chief Operating Officer Ed Tapscott. "We look forward to the next step in our building process when we make our team's first-ever rookie draft pick on Thursday."

Charlotte acquired the second overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft for selecting forward Predrag Drobnjak from the Los Angeles Clippers.

"We are excited about the make up of our first Bobcats roster," said Bobcats General Manager and Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "We feel the fans will appreciate a young, exciting team that will compete hard every night, defend and embrace the team concept. It was also important that we keep an eye firmly focused on the future with a long-term vision that allows for maximum roster flexibility."

Bobcats fans were suprised when Coach Bernie Bickerstaff elected to pick up Jamison Brewer instead of Promoz Brezec, Ruben Boumtje Boumtje instead of Jason Kapono and not selecting Gerald Wallace.

"Those 3 (Brezec, Kapono and Wallace) will be their future superstar. I was suprise to see they weren't pick by the Bobcats. But i think there are some transaction that happen that we don't know," a NBA Insider said.

Charlotte Bobcats Off-Season Transactions

The Bobcats have acquired the 45th overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft from Milwaukee in exchange for Zaza Pachulia, and also acquired a future first-round pick from Cleveland in exchange for Aleksandar Pavlovic.

The future first-round pick will come from Toronto, which was due to Cleveland as part of a trade on Aug. 25, 2002 that sent Lamond Murray to the Raptors.

“Today’s moves are another positive step for our franchise and this allows us to maintain flexibility as we construct our team,” said Bobcats General Manager and Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff. “We traded a second-round pick to the Clippers on Monday and this allows us to gain back a second-round pick. The future pick we get will help us add another young and talented player.”

Both Pachulia and Pavlovic were among 18 players chosen by Charlotte in the Expansion Selection on Tuesday, June 22.

The Bobcats have acquired a second round pick in the 2005 NBA Draft from Atlanta in exchange for forward/center Predrag Drobnjak, it was announced by Bobcats General Manager & Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff.

“This trade allows us to open up a roster spot and also gives us a second round pick next year that we lost last month," said Bickerstaff. “We had six players at the power forward and center positions and this will relieve some of the logjam and present more minutes for the guys on our roster.”

The Bobcats added Drobnjak on June 22 as one of the team’s 18 picks in the Expansion Selection. Charlotte agreed to take Drobnjak as part of a trade with the Clippers on June 21 in which the Bobcats also received the second overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft in exchange for the fourth and 33rd overall picks in the 2004 NBA Draft.

Drobnjak, a 6-11 forward from Serbia & Montenegro, was initially drafted by Washington in the second round (49th overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft, but remained in Yugoslavia. He spent the first two years of his NBA career with the Seattle SuperSonics (2001-02 and 2002-03) before signing with the Clippers on September 28, 2003. Drobnjak has appeared in 207 NBA games with 95 starts and has career averages of 7.7 points and 3.6 rebounds in 19.9 minutes.

Bobcats Select Emeka Okafor As First-Ever Rookie Draft Pick

Image

The Bobcats made forward Emeka Okafor the franchise's historical first rookie draft pick with the second overall selection in the 2004 NBA Draft.

"We're really excited to make Emeka Okafor our first-ever draft pick and have him join our franchise," said General Manager and Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "Emeka controls the basketball game with his defense and we want him to be a defensive presence and to be unselfish. We like his power, his ability to block shots, his ability to get possessions through rebounds and his tremendous outlet pass."

Okafor led the University of Connecticut to the NCAA Championship in April and captured Most Outstanding Player honors at the Final Four after scoring 24 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in the national championship game against Georgia Tech. The First Team All-American led the nation in blocked shots and averaged 17.6 points and 11.5 rebounds (fourth in the country). The National Association of Basketball Coaches named him co-National Player of the Year and National Defensive Player of the Year.

"He is ready because of his experience at the collegiate level -- including winning the NCAA Championship," said Bickerstaff. "I think he is ready right now to step in and impact a basketball team. He is a tremendous young man and I know the fans in Charlotte will really enjoy him on and off the court."

The 21-year-old Houston native played on the USA Team in the 2003 Pan American Games. Okafor also excelled in the classroom with a 3.7 GPA in finance. The academic All-American graduated in three years.

The Bobcats moved up to the second pick on Monday, June 21, by trading their fourth and 33rd selections to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for the second overall pick and center Predrag Drobnjak.

Another Questionable Move by Bickerstaff

Bobcats GM and Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff announced that they traded their "franchise's historical first rookie draft pick", Emeka Okafor to the Los Angeles Lakers for future first-round selection and an undisclosed amount of cash and other perks and incentives.

Source said that Bryant have something to do with the trade.

"I heard Bryant called Bickerstaff a few times and threaten him that he will ask Bobcats mangement to fire him if he will not trade Okafor to the Lakers. Seems Like Bryant don't only have the power to control the Lakers but whole league," NBA insider said.

Also, according to the source, Lakers gave their 2 future first round picks, 5 million cash and unlimited tickets for all the Bobcats players and management for every Lakers home game for regular season and playoffs for the next 3 years.

Another insider also said that Bryant agreed that Bernie Bickerstaff can hit on his wife Vanessa every time Bobcats visits or plays team close to Lakers. That means Bickerstaff can hit Bryant's wife for a minimum of 5 games per season (Bobcats vs. 5 Pacific teams).

Bobcats Not Yet a Team, Already Breaking Up

Bobcats management try to build a team. But they has yet to make one... it was already breaking up.

After Bickerstaff made one of the worst trade in NBA history, bobcats players seems lost in the woods and all want to get out of this organization.

"If a team got a very good player in Okafor in the draft and will be the foundation of your franchise and trade it for just future picks. You have to wonder what more can they on players like us," Sampson said.

"This team came in the league not to win but to be the laughing stuff of the world and i Don't want to be part of it," said Theron Smith.

Also other players who invited to tryout for team didn't attend any tryout sessions the Bobcats held.

"Seems like all players dont want to come here and play for us," said Jeff Capel, Bobcats assistant coach.

"I know I made a big mistake in trading Okafor but as i said Bryant threaten me and the temptation of able to hit Vanessa Bryant was too hot to pass on. But I will try anything to have a team before the season start. ," Bickerstaff said.

With Bobcats still don't have a team, Bobcats weren't able to participate in summer league camp and pre-season camp.
