Game 1

Offseason Coming to a Close, Nets Unsure of Starting Line-up
By Filip Podkanski
As the Nets go into the season with a depleted roster they still don't have a starting line-up for their upcoming game against the Raptors. The only two players who are safe with a starting role are All-Star guard Jason Kidd and Forward Richard Jefferson. The Nets have 4 options at shooting guard, 3 at power forward and 2 at center. At shooting guard the Nets have Lucious Harris, who will probably be the starter, Rodney Buford, who will likely be the number two guard, Ron Mercer, who will likely back up Jefferson and Eric Williams who will most likely be a defensive specialist for the team.
Scalabrine is likely to start at power forward but the Nets also have the option of starting Rookies Nenad Krstic and Kyle Davis. Collins who has been a long time starter at center for the Nets will also win the starting job over Aaron Williams.
Game 1
New Jersey At Toronto
The Nets will be flying up north past the border for their first game against the Toronto Raptors. Although the Nets are playing with a depleted roster Toronto can't expect an easy win as long as Kidd is at the point and Jefferson is at his wing. The Raptors have many unanswered questions, like who will start at center and can Vince Carter finally play a season without injuries. The Raptors have also made many changes to their roster, one important move was signing Rafer Alston who is expected to start tonight when the ball is thrown for the tip at 7:30et/pt.

Both teams have announced their starting line-ups for tonight:

Keys to Success
Nets
-
Get the ball down low: The Raptors have a rookie and a undersized forward in the post so take it to them as much as possible.
-
Get a hand up in Carter's face: Carter is not like he used to be, he takes more jump shots instead of driving to the hoop. Always keep a hand in his face and always contest his shots.
-
Take advantage of poor shooting: The Raptors have always been a poor shooting team, now, with the exception of Alston, is no different. Force the Raptors to take long jump shots and make them.
Raptors
-
Drive the ball to the hoop: The Nets have no shot blockers on their team with the exception of Williams (Aaron). So drive to the hoop and get to the free throw line.
-
Keep spacing between you and your opponent: The Nets are struggling with their shooting as well but have some great slashers in Jefferson and Mercer, and with Jason Kidd at the point to get them the ball doesn't make it easier. So keep some space between you and your man and force him to take jump shots.
-
Play transition defense: Despite playing with out Martin and Kittles the Nets still have a superb fast break with Kidd leading and Jefferson running the floor. And don't turn your back on Scalabrine as the undersized forward can be faster than you think.
1st Quarter
The Raptors dominated the opening quarter starting on an 11-0 run capped off by a monster alley-oop from Rose to Carter. The Nets showed some energy late in the quarter with the fast break leading 6-0 in fast break points but coming up short 23-13 after the first quarter lead by Vince Carter's 9 points, 3 rebounds.

2nd Quarter
In the second quarter the Raptors continued to dominate with Vince Carter knocking down huge threes and Rafer Alston playing well defensively and got some easy buckets. The lone shining spot for the Nets was Jason Kidd going into half-time with 11 points and 6 assists. The Nets were down 48-41 at the half.
Vince Carter was 2 of 3 from downtown in the 2nd quarter.
Alston got a lot of easy buckets getting past Jason Kidd with ease from time to time.
Jason Kidd played well offensively going 4 for 5 from the field to make up for some poor defensive plays
3rd Quarter
The Nets got a huge lift from Ron Mercer coming off the bench in the 3rd. Mercer only played 7 minutes in the previous quarters going 0 for 3 from the field. But in the 3rd Mercer came off the bench with 3:21 to go being down 64-57 and started his own 6-0 run forcing the Raptors to call a time-out. But right out of the time-out the Raptor missed a quick three and Jefferson got down the floor and got fouled by Alston for a three point play. The teams went into the fourth tied at 66.
Mercer gave the Nets a lift in the 3rd scoring 6 of his 11 points in the 3rd.
Jefferson completed a huge 3 point play to give the Nets the first lead of the game.
4th Quarter
The 4th quarter started with both teams going back and fourth trading baskets. Jalen Rose scored 8 consecutive points for his team to give the Raptors a 72-70 lead. with 6:41 remaining in the fourth the Nets needed someone to shut Rose down. Coach Lawrence Frank was contemplating putting in defensive specialist Eric Williams but decided to give Jefferson another chance. Jefferson proved to be a great choice as he held Rose to only 4 points for the rest of the 4th scoring 11 himself. Kidd lead the way with assists with 11 assists. The Nets came up on top 81-84.
Jefferson gave Rose a hard time through the 4th holding him to only 4 points after allowing him to score 8 earlier on in the quarter.
Kidd lead all players with 11 assists to add to his 19 points.
