Unfortunately I have to go out of town for a week or two, but I have decide to give you the Preseason preview.
Orlando Magic Preseason 2003-04

With the 03-04 season rapidly approaching, the Magic are training hard as time is running down to the opening tip-off. I got a chance to sit down with head coach Johnny Davis to talk about his preseason preparations.
Stuart: What are the major changes you are making to get ready for this season?
J. Davis: Well, right now, we are just experimenting with some things, mostly having to do with the 4 and 5 spots. With Okafor coming in, we've been trying him out at the 4, and Gooden at the 5, but were still tweaking the lineup here and there.
Stuart: Any plans for some preseason moves?
J.Davis: I'm not sure about making any moves in the preseason, maybe in the early part of the regular season. We're looking for a guard. Yes, Lue has experience at the point, but in our eyes, Lue didn't have a good year last year, and to be a contender in this league, you have to have a leader at the point, and we don't think Tyronn stepped up as much as we hoped, so were looking to makes some moves to find someone that can.
Stuart: Anyone specific that you were looking at?
J.Davis: As of right now, no one specifically, but we've narrowed it down to a couple candidates. But I'm not going to discuss that right now seeing no negotiations have officially begun.
Stuart: Can you possibly give us the roster for opening day?
J.Davis: As of now, Gooden, McGrady and Okafor are for sure starting. Gooden and Okafor at the 4 and 5, McGrady at the 2 spot. As for the point and the other foward we're not sure. Garrity could possibly make the start at the foward, he's definately made some great progress from last year, so don't be suprised if you see Garrity get the start. As for the point, until we decide on Lue, he will most likely get the start.
Stuart: Johnny, thank you, and good luck this season.
J.Davis: Stuart, thank you.

Bill Laimbeer: If any team has improved in the offseason, it's the Orlando Magic. Expect to see a totally different Magic squad then last year as the team seems to really be clicking this year. Okafor shows the qualities of a dominant center and Gooden has been improving on jump shots. McGrady, well McGrady is going to be McGrady and do what he does best, score. Last season he averaged 32.1 pts. per game, so expect for him to have another big year. Tyronn Lue has had a good preseason but only averaged 8.2 pts. a game last year. Even though his numbers don't say much, Lue is an experienced point guard and a strong leader. Being the point guard he needs to be a leader and I expect him to fufill those expectations this season.
Bill Laimbeer's Keys To Success:
- Perimeter Shooting: One key to the Magic's success this season will be to get McGrady open on the perimeter. McGrady is a great shooter from outside and if he can get some open looks he's going to put the ball in the basket.
- Points In The Paint: Another key, is the Magic need to get the ball down low. Last year, the Magic's offense was based mostly on the guards, but now that you have Gooden and Okafor, it's time to get the ball to the big men to let them take it to the hoop.
- Defense: A key to success for any team is defense. The Magic have got to play good D if they want to contend this year. Last year the Magic gave up alot of points to opponents because of poorly played defense and not enough hustle. The Magic have to have a hand in the face of every shooter and someone to post up if they want to win games this year.
