Sonics Dynasty - GP returns, with the Mailman! (Game 10)

At the end of the 2002-2003 season, Gary Payton was tired of losing, season after season. He tested the free agent market. While he was there, he met Karl Malone, in the same situation as him. Same team, year after year, but never winning. "Yo Karl, how bout you come back with me to Seattle? We can turn things around, and we need a good post player," says Gary. "Sure, beats going back to Utah," says Malone.

So if you haven't caught on yet, Gary Payton and Karl Malone are on the Supersonics, along with the other new players, such as Ray Allen.

Now a note on the Lakers:

Seattle gave up their draft picks, and the Los Angeles Lakers picked up Nick Collison and Luke Ridnour. Derek Fisher is still a starter, and Slava Medvedenko is still a bench player. The Lakers are hoping to develop these rookies and keep their dynasty going, but now Seattle stands in their way.

In the past I've had high score problems with games, so I'm going to try out 9 minute quarters.

My other settings are:

The final score - 106 to 111

Seattle's newly rebuilt team could not win this one. It was a close, fast paced game at both ends of the court. Marko Jaric was having a great game, with over 30 points. Rashard Lewis blew a game winning shot, and the teams went into overtime. During overtime, Rashard Lewis blew several more important shots, but Karl Malone was able to keep them in the game. Rashard Lewis blew a big 3 to give them a 1 point lead, and then the team resorted to fouling, but it was over by then.

The final score - 105 to 103

After a devastating loss against Los Angeles the previous night, Rashard Lewis wasn't about to let that happen again. Shooting a furious 63% from the field, Rashard Lewis was heading on to a 40 point night. In game 1, Lewis missed a game winner, sending the teams to overtime. In overtime, Lewis blew another big shot, and it eventually cost them the game. Meanwhile Karl Malone still got the best of Elton Brand, outscoring him 22-18. Ray Allen wasn't having the success he usually did, and neither was Payton, but Lewis redeemed himself as he drove to the hoop and sank a spectacular shot over Corey Maggette. Los Angeles had a daunting task defending Lewis.

The final score - 113 to 108

Seattle almost lost this game. They came out strong, but soon stopped taking it seriously. Jason Terry was red hot, sinking 3 pointers all game. Stephen Jackson was also scoring and making 3 point plays whenever possible. However, Seattle wasn't about to let one of the worst teams in the league stop them. They shaped up after halftime and were able to beat Atlanta. Rashard Lewis had a great game, and Ray Allen's shooting was top notch.

The final score - 99 to 97

Seattle's star players weren't able to produce as much as they usually do, and for a moment it looked like they would lose. However, the role players on Seattle were able to step up and fill the void. Kevin Garnett showed why he was one of the top MVP candidates, shooting 11/12 from the field in a dominating performance. Sam Cassell and Latrell Spreewell had fair games, while former 1st overall pick Michael Olowokandi scored no points in the entire game. Minnesota played tight zone defense, which really prevented Seattle from getting a good rhythm. Seattle only shot 66% from the free throw line, and eventually made a commitment to crash the boards, catching 11. The great performance of Seattle's complementary players was enough to throw off Minnesota and get Seattle the win.

Gary: Minnesota was playing a tight zone defense, and it was pretty well disguised, and it was tough to get by.

Gary: It actually hasn't bothered me a lot, I figured since I couldn't score, I'd try to help other people score, and I ended up with a bunch of assists.

Question 3: Did you realize how many assists you totaled?

Gary: No, not at all. I'm just out there playing, you know, I'm not keeping track of all this.

The final score - 119 to 117

This game went into overtime. It was such an amazing game that even the Milwaukee fans, though watching their team suffer a draining defeat, witnessed a truly amazing game. It was close throughout the game, and each team had their runs. There were an amazing amount of clutch shots and plays, from a number of players. The following are screenshots from the game, and following that, a pictorial to narrate the later moments in the game.

Milwaukee was also very fierce, trying to obtain the win

After the foolish rookie T.J. Ford rushed a shot, Seattle got the rebound and called a timeout, with 14.9 on the clock, tied at 98

Seattle inbounded the ball, which was then passed to the weary Karl Malone, who shot for the win, but missed. Seattle and Milwaukee are headed to overtime.

EVERYONE was dead tired, as they headed to the bench for a breather

In overtime, both team were aggressively scoring, trading baskets, keeping the game tied

Then Seattle comes out empty on a possession, and Michael Redd knocks down a HUGE 3 pointer to give Milwaukee a 5 point lead, 112-117

After Seattle missed again, Joe Smith got the defensive rebound, but threw it away to Ray Allen

Immediately after stealing the pass, Ray Allen put his foot behind the line, and knocked down a CLUTCH 3 pointer over T.J. Ford, cutting the deficit to 2, 115-117

Keith Van Horn had no rest whatsoever, and threw the ball to the wrong guy

After catching the pass, Rashard Lewis went strong to the hoop. Keith Van Horn tried to recover, and bumped Lewis hard, and Lewis made the shot, but there was no call. The score was tied, 117-117

The rookie T.J. Ford forgets the magnitude of their possession and rushes a shot, and misses. With 15.7 left on the clock, Seattle prepares to play their final hand. The coach points to Malone, as he tells him that he will shoot the final shot.

As they ran their play, Gary Payton was double teamed, and with time winding down, and being unable to see over the taller defenders, he was forced to call the final timeout, with 0.9 left on the clock

The tension increases as the officials come back from the scorer's table with the result. Did it count? Did Seattle win? Or are we headed to 2nd OT?

IT COUNTS! The roof blows off, everybody is going nuts! Seattle won the game!

Player of the Game - Ray Allen

Question 1: How big of a role do you think you played in this game?

Ray: I played a huge role in this one. I stole the pass, shot the 3 pointer, and it just went in.

Question 2: What was going through your mind as Joe Smith's pass went right in your direction?

Ray: I thought to myself, "This is big, go for it." I like to catch the ball and shoot, so I acted like it was a pass meant for me, so I just caught it and shot.

Question 3: Despite your great expertise in shooting, do you think you could do that again, with all that pressure?

Ray: I don't see it as a lot of pressure, I just pretend like it's another day in practice. I was tired when I made that shot, and you gotta practice shots when you're tired, because that's when you're going to shoot them. I think I could do it again, but I'm not willing to bet on it.

After making that huge shot, reporters were able to catch Karl Malone as he was on his way to the locker room.

Question 1: Did you know that you would be the one set up to take those shots?

Karl: Actually, it wasn't all meant for it to go to me. First it was Ray Allen to get open for the 3, then the 2nd option was for Lewis to do a give and go with Payton, and the 3rd was a give and go with me.

Question 2: What were you thinking during the play?

Karl: When I saw Rashard Lewis setting a pick for Ray Allen, I knew Gary wasn't going to pass it over there, and I thought, "It's all up to me now," and I caught the pass and shot.

Question 3: Was that one of the tensest moments you've had to go through?

Karl: That wasn't one of the tensest moments. My most tense moments are from playing against MJ in the playoffs, however this is the most tense moment where I had the ball.

This game almost went into overtime. Jermaine O'Neal was shut down, unable to take many shots. He only scored 12 points. Austin Croshere had a great game however, posting a 20 point game. Jamaal Tinsley blew two huge 3 pointers, which eventually cost them the game.

Gary: I doubt it, Karl Malone did a great job keeping O'Neal from getting looks.

The final score - 108 to 110

Ray Allen went to Chicago eager to prove to them not to mess with Seattle. He had a great game, but Seattle wasn't able to get the win. Chicago battled fiercely, and the young, dominant center Eddy Curry was unstoppable. Seattle was down 108-110 with the final possession in the 4th, and Brent Barry shot the 3 pointer to win the game, but he missed. Ray Allen and the rest of the team end their road trip dissatisfied.

Ray Allent wanted to send a message to Chicago

Unfortunately the game had to be delayed due to a net that proved very difficult to untangle

Gary Payton went right up to Kirk Hinrich and ripped him

Karl Malone gave Eddy Curry a good old fake

Scottie Pippen was scoring like he did in his prime

Brent Barry took the last shot, but missed

Gary Payton was on the bench for the final play. He knows Brent is a better shooter, but he thinks he could have made that shot.

Eddy: They just don't have a very skilled center. Potapenko and James are good centers, but I was able to get the best of them.

Question 2: How did you do against Karl Malone?

Eddy: I did bad against him. He made me look like a fool. If they had him defend me, I think things would have turned out different.

Question 3: What do you have to say about Ray Allen's performance?

Eddy: Ray played great, but the rest of his team wasn't up to par, and we were close to losing this game anyways. I think if they gave him the final shot he would have made it.

(Couldn't change wristbands without going through some DBF stuff, and I wasn't about to do all that. I did change Malone's number though, he is now 32 again.)

The final score - 107 to 111

The game was very close, until the 2nd quarter, when Miami began to pull ahead. Ray Allen, Gary Payton, and Rashard Lewis just weren't producing like they usually did, and the team ended up trailing. Karl Malone however, was trying his hardest to win. Shooting 63%, Malone simply caught fire from the field, but Miami was more on fire, finding ways to score. Miami shot many more 3 pointers, and it ultimately gave them the lead, as Seattle was unable to put this team away.

There was no stopping Karl Malone

Gary Payton had an off night

Rashard Lewis didn't have his worst game, but he didn't have his best either

Eddie Jones was giving the team energy

Question 1: What did you think about Gary Payton's performance?

Dwayne: I didn't like it at all. I loved watching Payton while growing up and I don't like seeing him play this bad.

Question 2: Did you know if you grabbed more boards you could have achieved a triple double?

Dwayne: Not really. In most situations I wasn't close enough to attempt to grab the rebounds anyway.

Question 3: Your team shot 56% while Seattle shot 58%. What do you have to say about this?

Dwayne: All I can say is we took more shots, and they just kept falling.
