Interview with Warriors head coach Eric Musselman!

Dan Patrick

Dan Patrick: Welcome to our one on one interview with Warriors head coach Eric Musselman. How are you doing today Eric?

Eric Musselman: I’m going great. New season is about to start, I’m excited.

DP: What does this team need to do to go to the playoffs?

EM: We need to be consistent. We can’t play hard for 20 games then take the other 62 games off or whatever. We have play with heart for 48 minutes, 82 games.

DP: What will you do to push this team personally?

EM: Well, as a coach I’m suppose to motivate my players and coach them into the playoffs. So, I’ll do just that. I’ll just tell then that I’m here for the same reason you’re here for, let’s put everything behind us and focus on that.

DP: Do you like it Oakland?

EM: I love it in Oakland. The fans are friendly, the players and the organization are friendly it’s just a nice, calm, relaxing atmosphere than can be turned into a winning one. I love it here.

DP: With no certain superstar on this team who do you think will step up and fill in that role for this team?

EM: Jason Richardson, Mike Dunleavy, and Erick Dampier they all have to step up. Everyone on this roster has to know their role. The first couple of games is hard on a coach because you don’t know what to ask for from a player. But I try my best.

DP: Do you think this team can make the playoffs?

EM: Yes, we can make the playoffs.

DP: Do you think you will?

EM: Well, that is a hard question to answer. Lot’s things happen in the course of a year. But I like our chances of being in the playoffs.

DP: Even in the west?

EM: Ha, even in the West. West has those, you know, top 5 teams or so but after that it’s fair game. We will just compete every night and everything will fall into order.

DP: Do you have any bold predictions for this year before we go?

EM: We will compete hard, play with passion and we will make a push for the playoffs.

DP: Will you make the playoffs?

EM: You’re not getting anything out of me, Dan.

DP: Hahaha, Okay. We’ll, that’s all the time we have for now. Thank you Eric and good luck this season.

EM: Thank you.

Oakland, CA-The NBA season holds many surprises throughout the 82 game regular season. And lot’s of things change from day 1 to day 82. Playoff hopes are shattered, hopes and dreams are diminished.

I guess you could say that is how many, if not all, of the Golden State Warrior fans feel like after another disappointing year. Another year of not making the playoffs and another year down the drain. Another year of lottery and another year of sweat and hardships down the drain. The Golden State Warriors hope not to have “another year”.

The Warriors are planning to go to the playoffs this year. Their slogan of the season is “A push towards the playoffs”. They know, the fans know that this could be the year that they finally break that drought and make the playoffs. But they also know they could be setting themselves up for yet another disappointing and abrupt end to the season.

Not all of us are sold on the Golden State Warriors, especially after trading away Antwan Jamison and Danny Fortson to the Mavericks for aging Nick Van Exel. The season/home opener is tonight vs. Antwan Jamison, Danny Fortson and the Mavericks. The Arena in Oakland isn’t even close to being sold out. This is the beginning of what they promise to be the best season ever.

The fans aren’t sold yet, the media, the players. Tonight is the beginning and it also could be the end. Everyone needs something to believe in…beating the Dallas Mavericks is a great stepping stone towards the ultimate goal, the playoffs and beyond.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starting Line-ups:
Mavericks-Pos-Warriors
Steve Nash-PG-Nick Van Exel
Michael Finley-SG-Jason Richardson
Shawn Bradley-C-Erick Dampier
Antoine Walker-SF-Mike Dunleavy
Dirk Nowitzki-PF-Cliff Robinson

Key Match-up: Erick Dampier vs. Shawn Bradley
Erick Dampier has the strength advantage and Shawn Bradley has the height advantage. Look for the Warriors to try attack inside with Dampier and Murphy vs. the Mavericks weak interrior defense.

Advantage: Warriors

Prediction: Mavs win 108-98

Dallas-103, Golden State-107

Warriors win in dramatic fashion!

Image
Dampier muscled his way through Dallas.

Oakland, CA-Let’s all take a deep breath for a second. There we go. The Warriors were sitting pretty up big at the end of the 3rd. Until the Mavericks caught fire and the Warriors suddenly went cold.

The Mavericks scored 38 points in the final quarter to the Warriors 19. They stormed back as the Warriors struggled to cling to their lead. A last second blown lay-up by Finley and the free throws by Van Exel secured the victory.

The Warriors dominated the Mavericks for the first 3 quarters. And I mean dominated. But as the final quarter got underway you could tell that Coach Eric Musselman thought this game was over.

“I thought we had it won. I wouldn’t have put Calbert Cheaney, Adonal Foyle and Mickael Pietrus if I knew this would happen.” Musselman said. The team went to its bench in the final quarter thinking the game was won, but just when they did that the Mavericks caught on fire hitting 67% from the field in the final quarter.

Erick Dampier won player of the game honors with his 14 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks performance. He was dominating the Mavericks weak front.

“I just tried to be aggressive man. It was fun out there. They had a late run but we were able to pull it out.” Dampier said after the game.

Key Team Stats:
Bench: Mavs-16 Warriors-31
FG%: Mavs-51% Warriors-50%
Rebounds: Mavs-29 Warriors-45
Free Throws: Mavs-10/10 Warriors-12/13
Assists: Mavs-21 Warriors-30
Turnovers: Mavs-6 Warriors-8

Key Warrior Player Stats:
Jason Richardson: 33 points,
Nick Van Exel: 16 points, 12 assists
Speedy Claxton: 8 points, 13 minutes

Key Maverick Player Stats:
Steve Nash: 33 points, 12 assists
Antoine Walker: 20 points, 5 rebounds
Dirk Nowitzki: 14 points

Musselman's Coach's Corner
"I thought we played great the first three quarters. I kind of let the team down by basically saying the game was over when it wasn't. I take responability on that part. We played great though. It's great to win the first game at home vs. a contender. It feels good"

Clutch Player
Tonights clutch player was Speedy Claxton. He scored all eight of his points in the final 2 minutes including a stretch were he scored 6 in a row. He scored 8 of the teams final 12 points and was agressive on defense as well as offense.

NOTE: Sorry about the box score, I left the game and I forgot to write down the scores per quarter. I will have one next game.

A look ahead

Image
Oakland, CA-This season will be a promising one for the Warriors, already 1-0. They have talent, veterans and youth to push them for all 82 games. Will they make the playoffs this year? Will they make a serious run at a title? In here, we look ahead.

This year’s team is ready to make a run at the playoffs. Coach Eric Musselman is one of the best, young coaches in the league today. He is a good motivator and will make this team work hard to achieve this so public goal.

“I know I have to work hard to get this team to succeed. Everyone has to work hard. You know that team thing.” Eric Musselman said during practice. So, Coach Musselman knows what this team has to do to win. Does the team know?

“Yeah, we know” Jason Richardson said “we know that we have to be consistent, play as a team and work hard to win. We know that.” Working hard, being consistent and working as a team sounds easy. But it’s not.

To work hard they have to be willing to give up some time. Be willing to sweat and do whatever it takes to win. Does this young team know that yet? Do you really know what it takes to work hard all year?

To work and play as a team is easier said than done and Coach Eric Musselman knows that. He will be hard at work trying to create chemistry with this team and closure like none-less. You have to be able to trust your teammates during a game. And to trust you teammates you must have a common goal. Can they do that?

And finally, being consistent is maybe the hardest one to do. After the first couple of weeks you start to get bored with the same old routine. This gets annoying, people listen to the media and the team is no longer on the same page. You must be consistent, not only on the floor but off the court too. You have to consistent as a group and friends.

So as you see here there are a lot of questions asked and no answers, yet. This season is all about answering the questions, silencing the critics and shutting up the haters. Does this young team have what it takes to do something like that? We are 81 games away from finding out.

Key Match-up: Point Guard play
Eric Snow vs. Nick Van Exel. These two veteran guards know all the tricks in the book and their play could very well determine the outcome of the game. Nick has more offense but Snow's defense might knock Van Exel out of a rhythm.

76ers-103, Warriors-94
Warriors come-back fails

Image
Iverson carried his team to victory.

Oakland, CA-The Warriors could not come up with a late rally and they lost it. They were trailing the whole game and never lead. Down by 14-15 points almost all game they stormed back in the 4th to bring within 5 but they never got closer.

Jason Richardson was hot for the Warriors posting 33 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists in the Warriors loss. He was really the only clicking all game long. Nick Van Exel started to turn it on late in the 4th but it was too little too late. Nick finished with 20 points.

The game was never really close and the 76ers keep the pressure up all game long. The Warriors never got a break and could never catch up. Allen Iverson won player of the game honors with his 33 points and 6 rebounds. Allen vs. Richardson was an entertaining match-up and it proved to be the best match-up of the night.

Nobody really showed up for the Golden State Warriors. They were missing lay-ups and open 15 footers all night. You can’t beat an NBA team shooting 38%. They really struggled from the field which is completely opposite of the first game when they shot the ball well vs. the Mavericks.

“We know we let ourselves down. We should have played better. But, we will come back and win our next game.” Jason Richardson said after the game. Confidence is building and it’s only game 2 of the season.

Despite everything the Warriors should relentless attack and battled back in the game that seemed to be lost. If they would have been hitting their shots we might be talking about a Warriors win. They didn’t get the job done and they know it, we know it.

Key Team Stats:
Bench: 76ers-15/Warriors-11
FG%: 76ers-48%/Warriors-38%
Rebounds: 76ers-42/Warriors-50
Free Throws: 76ers-26/28/Warriors-14/18
Assists: 76ers-17/Warriors-20
Turnovers:76ers-10/Warriors-14

Key Warrior Player Stats
Jason Richardson: 33 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists
Nick Van Exel: 20 points, 5 rebounds (4 off), 3 steals, 4 assists
Cliff Robinson: 12 points, 9 rebounds
Mike Dunleavy: 10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block

Key 76er Player Stats
Allen Iverson: 33 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists
Eric Snow: 12 points, 8 assists
Glenn Robinson: 18 points
Kenny Thomas: 14 points, 10 rebounds

Musselman's Coach's Corner
"We didn't play as a team. We were agressive at the beginning of the game and we just seemed to be lost out there. Lots of one-on-one especially on Jason Richardson's part. He knows it he will come out more focused on the team than himself next time. We tried to come back but we couldn't. Tough loss."

Clutch performer
Glenn Robinson was the Clutch performer in tonights game. He scored 9 of his 18 points in the 4th quarter to push the 76ers to victory. He was a perfect 4/4 from the field too.

Shaq and Malone vs. Dampier and Robinson. Expect Murphy to play more vs. Malone than Robinson due to the strength issue. You stop Shaq but Dampier can put a body on him to try to contain him. Let's see if Dampier gets in some early foul trouble.

Lakers-99, Warriors-98
Final minutes breathtaking!

Image
Shaq celebrates his game winning basket.

Los Angeles, CA-The last two minutes of the game was intense trading baskets from 94-95, 96-95, 98-97, and 99-98. It was going back and forth for almost the whole game. The fans were on the edge of their seats in the final minute when the team exchanged potential game winners.

Shaquille O’Neal was held scoreless and shot-less through 3 quarters. The Warriors were doubling him every time he touched ball, whether or not he was in the paint or behind the arc. Their strategy to stop Shaq worked, until the final 2 minutes. Shaq scored all of his 6 points in the final 4 minutes of the game including the game winner over Cliff Robinson and Erick Dampier. He hit the hook with 1.5 seconds left putting them up 99-98. JR Bremer missed the shot at the buzzer in the corner and the Lakers escaped Staples with a victory.

The player of the game was Gary Payton. Gary posted 26 points and 10 assists in the victory. Gary was huge in the victory and really set the tone throughout the whole game.

The Warriors should be proud about this game. They played with one of, if not the, best team in the league. They hung with them and they stopped the more dominate player in the game today. This will be a great stepping stone once again for this franchise. Although they lost they played their hearts out and should be proud of themselves.

Team Stats:
Bench: Lakers-14/Warriors-43
FG%: Lakers-48%/Warriors-45%
Rebounds: Lakers-39/Warriors-44
Free Throws: Lakers-3/4/Warriors-12/16
Assists: Lakers-23/Warriors-20
Turnovers: Lakers-10/Warriors-11

Key Warrior Player Stats:
Nick Van Exel: 16 points, 3 assists
Mike Dunleavy: 14 points
Troy Murphy: 14 points, 8 rebounds
Jason Richardson: 12 points

Key Laker Player Stats
Kobe Bryant: 30 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists
Devean George: 15 points, 4 rebounds
Gary Payton: See Article
Shaquille O'Neal: 6 points, 3/3 FG, 8 rebounds

Musselman's Coach's Corner
"We played hard out there. We followed our gameplan and took Shaq out of the game. Gary really hurt us out there so I tried to play Speedy a little bit more down the stretch vs. Nick for defensive reasons. We put Dunleavy on Kobe and he realy seemed to get in Kobe's way during the 4th quarter. It's a tough loss but we learned alot about this team during these last two loses. We'll bounce back."

Clutch Performance
Today's clutch performance goes to Shaq. The Diesel scored all 6 of his points in the final 4 minutes including 4 points in the final minute. Shaq also hit the game winning shot to give the Lakers a 99-98 victory.

Game's Box Score:
Team 1st 2nd 3rd 4th

Key Matchup: Point Guard Play
Jason Terry vs. Nick Van Exel. Terry is really the only reliable scorer on this Hawks team so outplaying Nick Van Exel at the point guard battle will be critical. Look for the Hawks to try to push it and get Terry involved in the full-court game.

Hawks-81, Warriors-97
Warriors dominate Hawks with "scrubs"

Image
Murphy and the bench domianted Hawks.

Oakland,CA-Jason Richardson only played 9 minutes. Erick Dampier only played 8 minutes same with Nick Van Exel. Dunleavy only played 11 minutes. Yes, it was an old fashion blow out. Although the final score may not show the whole story the players who played surely do.

If you turned on the game at the start of the 2nd quarter you saw this line-up out there: J.R. Bremer, Mickael Pietrus, Calbert Cheaney, Troy Murphy, Adonal Foyle. That was pretty much the kind of lineup that was chucked out there most of the game. Brian Cardinal subbed in, Cliff Robinson and Speedy Claxton were basically the subs for that unit. Yes, Musselman gave the starters a day off.

“I thought they needed it. I saw no chance of them coming back. Why risk hurting them?” Musselman said after the game. Ah, yes. Injuries that’s something the Warriors saw in this game. First, it was in the first quarter and Speedy Claxton went hard to the hole and got a hard foul. He was out for 1 quarter but he did return. Then in the 4th quarter he got hurt again and was gone for the rest of the game(final 2:40). The next time down the court Troy Murphy got hacked and he hurt his back. He is listed as day-to-day.

J.R. Bremer won player of the game with his 21 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists in the game. He was the offense in this game and was consistent all night. He really showed the team and the fans something today.

“I just know when I’m called up to play I’m going to try my best. I did that today and I was hitting my shots. It was a good run.” J.R. Bremer said during a press conference.

So, with the starters sitting the bench almost all night the team still dominated the Atlanta Hawks proving the world that their 3-1 record was only a fluke. The Warriors, however, still must prove that they aren’t.

Team Stats:
Bench: Hawks-30/Warriors-56
FG%: Hawks-39%/Warriors-45%
Rebounds: Hawks-32/Warriors-53
Free Throws: Hawks-8/11/Warriors-22/25
Assists: Hawks-19/Warriors-22
Turnovers: Hawks-12/Warriors-12

Key Warrior Player Stats:
JR Bremer: See Article
Cliff Robinson: 16 points, 13 rebounds
Jason Richardson: 13 points, 9 minutes
Adonal Foyle: 10 points, 9 rebounds
Troy Murphy: 8 points, 13 rebounds

Key Hawk Player Stats:
Stephan Jackson: 22 points, 5 rebounds, 14 minutes
Bob Sura: 16 points
Jason Terry: 12 points, 7 assists
Shawn Kemp: 10 points, 8 rebounds

Musselman's Coach's Corner:
"I thought we really played great today. The bench was pretty much our first and second unit and they were ready to play. I tell them everyday to get ready to play big minutes for whatever reason. This won't happen alot but I just didn't feel the need to play my star players. Especially when we built that 30 point lead late in the first. Hawks don't have enough fire power to come back from that."

Clutch Performer
Today's Clutch Performer is more like the Clutch Play. Adonal Foyle had this rim rattling dunk in the 4th that sent the crowd into a frenzy. I thought it was pretty cool so I decided to use this as the Clutch Perfomer because there wasn't much clutch in this game.

Tonight's Box Score:

Team 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
Warriors 29 22 21 25
Hawks 10 18 27 26

Key Match-up: Harpring vs. Dunleavy
Harpring is the only consistent offensive threat on this Jazz team so Dunleavy must try to shut him down to lock up this Jazz team. Harpring vs. Dunleavy will be interesting to watch as Dunleavy's defense goes up again Harpring's offense.
