Bucks Appoint Gary Payton as Assistant GM



The Milwaukee Bucks have today appointed former Buck and Hall of Fame 2013 inductee as their Vice President of Basketball Operations. Other wise known as Assistant General Manager. In what has been a well kept secret, Payton has been an executive adviser to the Bucks owner Herb Kohl this season. Kohl has hired Glenn Robinson as a player development coach earlier in the year. Big Dog has been working with Derrick Williams in particular, after the trade of Giannis Antetokounmpo. Williams game has blossomed with his starting role this year. Apparently Payton advised Kohl to hire Robinson, and to take a chance and trade for Derrick Williams. However this appointment could be seen as undermining GM John Hammond who has done a reasonably good job in assembling this roster. Apart from the overpaying of Zaza Pachulia for instance.

Payton is regarded around the league as an up and coming executive. The Bucks have made a wise choice in reeling him in now sooner, rather than later. Time will tell how Payton and Hammond co-exist for the remainder of the season. If Payton continues to have the owners ear, the Bucks may not be done dealing yet.

Larry Sanders out 1 month with Hamstring Strain.



Larry Sanders severely strained his hamstring last night against the Washington Wizards. Team Doctors believe it will take up to a month for Sanders to return to full fitness. Sanders injury comes at a bad time for the Bucks, as they are trying to chase the Brooklyn Nets for the 4th spot in the East. Sanders has been a defensive player of the year candidate this season, and combined with John Henson, has formed one of the best defensive frontcourt tandems in the league this year. Henson will be expected to slide over to the center spot, Derrick Williams to the Power Forward spot, and Caron Butler will start at Small Forward. The Bucks only have one game left before the All Star game so they are hopeful it will help Sanders rehab.

Sanders was about to be provisionally named in the Sprite Slam Dunk contest laster this week, but the NBA will have to now find a replacement. I'd imagine they will look no further than his Bucks teammate John Henson, who presumably will be selected in the Rising Stars challenge. Henson has been a Most Improved Player of the year Candidate, and this could be the icing on the cake for him.
