Re: Balls to the Wall in Montreal: Hugh Jazz November Recap!

Tue Sep 14, 2010 10:58 am

Balkman starts for defensive purposes. I generally match him up on the opposing team's star. Plus if I start Warrick then my bench has very little offense, and Warrick gets more minutes than Balkman anyway.

You should try to get Balkman a three point shot. That would make him a pretty good role player. Also, are you considering any deals? You have some minor logjams that you may be able to convert in a more competent starting 2 or 4. (Love Bayless and Trout, but see them as great reserve combo guard and forwards respectively)

Team stats

They say basketball is a game of runs and momentum, which was certainly true of tonight's match up between the Knicks and Monarchs. Both teams would lead by double-digits throughout the 1st 3 quarters, exchanging runs and leads, before Montreal blew open the game in 4th quarter with a 20-4 to put them up by 18.

The 1st quarter saw Montreal open up a 12-point advantage on the strength of a 11-2 run. The Knicks would finish the 1st on a 10-2 run of their own, cutting the score to 24-20. New York carried the momentum into the 2nd quarter, draining 3-pointer after 3-pointer to go 49-39. Again, a quick 11-5 run to close out the quarter to cut the deficit to 4, with the Knicks leading 54-50 at the break.

Danilo Gallinari made Montreal's defenders look silly in the 1st half, putting in 14 points on 6/8 shooting. The Monarchs were paced by Travis Outlaw's 14 first-half points.

The teams would trade baskets to open the 3rd quarter, before back-to-back 3-pointers by the Knicks pushed the score to 66-59. A 3-point play by Jerryd Bayless and long-range bomb by Memhmet Okur would tie the score at 66. Outlaw the gave Montreal their first lead since 29-27 early in the 2nd, a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game, converting on a pair of free throws.

The Monarchs rattled off a 20-4 run to start the 4th quarter, pushing their lead from 2 to 18. Okur scored 9 straight at one point on a variety of moves, first sinking a 3-pointer, then nailing a stop-and-pop jumper from 17', followed by a hook shot in the lane, and then stepping into a deep-2 off a beautiful pump fake. Jerryd Bayless also played a big role in Montreal's game-clinching run, scoring 7 of his 17 points in the quarter by repeatedly attacking the rim.

The win extends Montreal's win streak to 5, and puts them 1 win away from a .500 record.

That actually reminds me of another self-imposed rule I forgot to mention: I will not be using development drills. It makes the game too easy, almost feels like cheating. I will, however, be using training camps, but I doubt I'll be sending Balkman to one.

As for trades, I do have some ideas. I'm approaching Dec. 15th (my trade activation point), so we'll start to see some activity on that front. Bayless would ideally be my 6th man, but I highly doubt I'll be upgrading my roster to the point where I can bring both Outlaw and Bayless off the bench. Besides, Outlaw is 1 of only 3 players I've promised a starting role to, the others being Wall and Okur. Bayless is guaranteed 6th man status, while the rest of my guys are role players, prospects, and bench warmers.

Team stats

Despite some sloppy play and unfocused effort from the Monarchs as a whole, Jerryd Bayless and John Wall ably demonstrated how formidable an offensive threat the duo can impose against the league-worst Timberwolves.

Wall and Bayless combined for 65 points, 42 and 23, respectively, against the lowly Wolves, especially excelling in the open court where they were able to use their speed and athleticism to get to the rim and draw numerous fouls. Bayless drew a very impressive 14 free throw attempts, while Wall almost matched that with 11.

"I'm not sure if there's a faster back court in the league," said Minnesota head coach Kurt Rambis. "When they're on, they're extremely difficult to contain."

Minnesota's own Wayne Ellington had a strong game, finishing with 29 points, 22 in the 1st half, on 10-for-17 shooting. His 1st half explosion helped keep the Wolves in it when no one else on the team could buy a bucket.

The game was closely contested throughout, with neither team managing more than an 8-point lead. The Wolves took their first lead early in the 2nd quarter with a 10-0 run which put the score at 37-32. Montreal would tie the game at 46 off a three-point play from Wall in transition, bringing a 4 point advantage into halftime.

Montreal would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game, though Minnesota kept it close, even tying it up at 91 late in the 4th. A 3-pointer by Mehmet Okur, the Monarchs only 3 of the game, would put Montreal in front again, but Minnesota would not go away. A tough fade away by Ellington would bring the Wolves back to within 1, before the Monarchs sealed with back-to-back dunks from Outlaw and Balkman to make it a 2 possession game with 17 second remaining.

Re: Balls to the Wall in Montreal - 3-team trade

Fri Sep 17, 2010 6:51 pm

3-TEAM TRADE ANNOUNCED

LAKERS, CAVS, MONARCHS SWAP PLAYERS

MTL trades: C Kosta Koufus, G Aaron Afflalo, G Brandon Rush, 2011 2nd round pick
MTL receives: G Anthony Parker, F Jamario Moon, 2011 1st round pick (CLE)
Analysis: This trade accomplishes 3 things for Montreal - it frees up cap space, adds to the team's assets, and helps fill a temporary need. With Hakim Warrick out for up to a month, the Monarchs were left very thin at forward. Jamario Moon, though less inclined to play inside and less adept on the board than Warrick, still represents a long, athletic forward who can finish at the rim on a team that loves to run. Cleveland's 1st rounder is an additional asset which could be used to facilitate further deals, or may be retained. If the Cavs continue to struggle, the pick could even land in the low-lottery. As for cap space, Parker comes off the books this year, while Moon has 1 year after this on his deal. Rush and Afflalo, meanwhile, both have 3 years remaining on their contracts, and both had fallen out of favor with coach Montgomery - Afflalo for his consistently poor shooting, and Rush for his lack of defensive effort.

CLE trades: G Anthony Parker, F Jamarion Moon, G Delonte West, 2011 1st round pick
CLE receives: F Lamar Odom, C Kosta Koufus, G Brandon Rush, 2011 2nd round pick (LAL), 2012 2nd round pick (LAL)
Analysis: This trade was purely about upgrading the talent level for Cleveland. Anthony Parker was clearly no longer a starter (and won't be asked to be in Montreal), forcing the also-traded Delonte West in the starting 2 spot. Though this met with some success early in West's tenure with the Cavs, the results clearly weren't there this season. Odom is expected to come off the bench, boosting Cleveland's offensively inept second unit. His play making will also help a team that struggles to create good looks outside of LeBron iso's and pick and roll's. Finally, his presence in the front court will help alleviate some of the problems with what should have been one of the league's best big men rotations. Shaq, though still effective, is clearly diminished at this stage, free agent signee Ben Wallace has been a non-factor, and Joakim Noah seems to provide too much overlap with Anderson Varejao. And if it doesn't work out, Odom comes off the books this year.

LAL trades: F Lamar Odom, 2011 2nd round pick, 2012 2nd round pick
LAL receives: G Delonte West, G Aaron Afflalo
Analysis: The Lakers made the biggest gamble of the 3 teams. Like Cleveland, they've been struggling this season. The main reason has been horribly ineffective point guard play. Rookie Derek Schroeder has been a disaster as a starter, but their options behind him are virtually non-existent. Delonte West, though more of a combo guard, could actually thrive in the triangle, as Phil Jackson doesn't ask his lead guards to do too much creating, and his size, shooting ability, and defensive prowess all make him uniquely suited to Jackson's system. Afflalo gives them another solid perimeter defender, and his lack of offense should be masked by the presence of Kobe and Gasol. Losing Odom does leave LA very thin in the front court, but they are expected to sign veteran free agent Udonis Haslem to fill the void left by Lamar.

both Parker & Moon had their best years playing for that other Canadian team, so hopefully things work out for the Monarchs; an extra 1st-rd pick can't hurt either ;)

I'm not too into Moon, either. Sorta soured on him in real life when he decided he was Ray Allen and he should shoot every 3-pointer available. But both he and Parker were on the block (I'm trying to stick to trading for guys on the block or players the CPU offers to me) and with Cleveland struggling it seemed logical they would make a move. LAL came in because they're struggling too, and they were in desperate need of a PG.

I'm kind of surprised to see people rating Odom so highly (though it makes sense for Sit), especially as the Udonis Haslem signing is imminent for LAL. Definitely the most talented player in the deal, but West fits LA's needs so much better, and I really think Afflalo could do well there. He's like an upgraded Shannon Brown, basically. Guess we'll see how it plays out.

And for the record, this trade was accepted by the CPU. Trade override was not used.

Team stats not available

With impressive play right from the tip, Montreal jumped out to a double-digit first quarter lead against Memphis and never looked back. The Grizzlies, clearly reeling from the trade of Stephen Jackson, had no answers for the Monarchs on defense, and weren't able to get into a flow offensively.

Jerryd Bayless was a big part of Montreal's fast start, scoring 12 of his 28 points in the first quarter.

The Grizzlies fortunes looked to have temporarily changed in the 2nd quarter as both Mehmet Okur and Travis Outlaw were whistled for their 3rd fouls. Memphis would cut the lead to 5, 39-34, before Montreal regrouped and extended the lead to 13. New acquisitions Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon were instrumental in helping the Monarchs restore their double digit lead. Moon had 2 dunks in the quarter, while Parker played solid defense and hit a couple jumpers as well.

The situation went from bad to worse for Memphis in 3rd quarter. Montreal's lead ballooned to as much as 24 points in the 3rd, and only a buzzer beating 3-pointer by O.J. Mayo prevented such a margin heading into the final frame.

With the game in hand, Montreal sat their starters for the majority of the 4th, and cruised to an easy 22-point win.

Good to see your team staying afloat. Is Wall the leader in point guard all-star votes? He's continuing to put up huge numbers. That loss to the Sixers really blows though. (N)

Lamrcok, Wall's not even close to leading PG's in votes. Chris Paul has way more, there's 4 in the East alone with more. Wall might not even make the ASG, which would be a travesty.

Thierry, Bayless has been doing really well. Him and Wall are just too fast for most back courts to handle, gives me a big leg up on offense.

Team stats

The Monarchs closed out 2010 in style with an easy win over division rivals the Pacers. Jerryd Bayless lead the team with 26 points and 11 assists, filling in admirably for a foul-plagued John Wall to push Montreal to victory.

The Pacers looked the aggressors early on, leading the game for most of the 1st quarter thanks 10 points from Danny Granger (he finished with 26 pts). However, once the Monarchs found their groove, they never looked back.

A 10-0 run to end the 1st put Montreal ahead 30-23. The Monarchs would push that lead to 18 by halftime, due largely to John Wall's 17 points and 7 assists in the 1st half. But with just 33 seconds gone in the 3rd quarter, Wall was called for his 4th personal foul, leaving the door open for a possible Pacers comeback. Jerryd Bayless would shut that door, lock it, and throw away the key. Bayless held off the Pacers almost single-handedly, scoring 16 second half points on a variety of runners, spin moves, and jumpers.

A 95-80 deficit heading into the 4th proved too much for the Pacers to overcome, as even Montreal's role players began scoring at will. Anthony Morrow dropped 13 points on 5/7 shooting, while Parker had 16 on 50% from the floor, and Moon went for 11 points from just 6 shots.

"We had a really balanced attack tonight, which is a good sign," said Montreal coach Freddy Montgomery. "We've been playing pretty good ball lately, but we've also been relying too much on John (Wall) to bail us out sometimes. Tonight the team stepped up and bailed him out. It was great to see."

Re: Balls to the Wall in Montreal(16-16) - Temporary Hiatus

Thu Sep 30, 2010 2:40 pm

Due to an insane school schedule, this association is going on temporary hiatus. I might do a few updates in the next few months if time allows, but it's not looking likely. Hopefully it will be revived at some point, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks for reading, everyone.

Understandable. 2K11 may be my last 2K game for a few years with college looming. Hope to see this return, be it in a few days or a few months.
