Blame it on the retro jerseys.

The Bulls and the Pacers sported old-school jerseys and the Pacers almost took the Bulls to school before Jermaine O'Neal's potential game-winning shot at the buzzer bounced off the back iron to give the Bulls a frantic 96-95 win at the United Center.

The Bulls (65-3) held their breath as O'Neal's shot bounced out and were surprised he missed.

"He had a good look," LeBron James said. "I thought for sure it was in."

"I'm really disappointed that I couldn't pull this out for my team," a dejected O'Neal said. "I had a clean look and it felt good coming off. Just didn't finish."

-----Bender hacks Wade, no call-------------O'Neal brings home two------------Colicky Boy dunks past Bender

The Pacers (41-28) held James to 16 points and 2 rebounds, although James did get 8 assists. Indiana also held Wade to 14 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists.

"Our defense was phenomenal," said Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle. "It put us in position to win and the win was there for the taking."

Colicky Boy led all scorers with 31 points and a game-high 9 assists. Dirk Nowitzki added 27 points and 9 rebounds. But some Bulls griped about the lack of calls.

"The refs swallowed their whistles several times," said Colicky Boy. "LeBron and Dwyane got hammered and all you hear is the sound of crickets."

Bulls head coach Scott Skiles preferred to blame the Bulls themselves.

"We missed several dunks that would have put some distance between us and Indiana," Skiles said. "Let's finish our job first before we blame others."

The Pacers actually led for most of the game, leading 27-24 after one, 48-43 at the half, and 74-65 after three quarters. The Bulls mounted their comeback in the final period but still had to survive O'Neal's miss at the end.

O'Neal finished with 14 points, longtime Bulls nemesis Reggie Miller scored a team-high 19, Jamaal Tinsley had 17, and Stephen Jackson scored 18.

"They've played some close games lately," said Indiana's Fred Jones. "There's a chink in their armor. They're not invincible."

Stoudemire exhibits the Bulls' unselfish play, giving up a good shot so James can take a great shot

Yes, the Bulls are on pace to shatter the NBA record for highest average points per game as a team in one season. The current record is 126.5 set by Denver back in 1981-82. The Bulls are currently averaging 148.9 through their first 55 games. The Bulls could score just 81 ppg the rest of the season and still break Denver's record.

And yes, the Bulls have already broken the mark for most points by a team in one game, previously set by Detroit against Denver on December 13, 1983. That game, however, took 3 overtimes. The Bulls scored 191 against Dallas in regulation...ironically on the same date this year.

But one thing goes largely unnoticed about this year's Bulls: they are on pace to break the NBA record for most assists per game in a season, which is currently 31.4 by Magic Johnson's LA Lakers in 1984-85.

55 games into the season, the Bulls are averaging 32.6 assists per game. And that mark is steadily climbing.

Everybody on this team passes. From point guard Dwyane Wade to center Amare Stoudemire...and right on down through the bench. A lot of that credit goes to head coach Scott Skiles, who preaches team basketball more than Oprah Winfrey wants to be worshipped.

Skiles gets furious when the team reverts to selfish play. And on a team with as many All-Stars and future Hall-of-Famers, selfish play should be pretty common. That was, after all, the downfall of the USA "Dream Team" recently in international competition.

Chicago's "Dream Team" is having none of that, though. The Bulls flirt with the previous NBA record of 53 assists (by Milwaukee vs. Detroit on December 26, 1978) almost on a nightly basis. That's how unselfish this team is.

"We don't worry about our points," said Wade. "We know that if everybody looks for one another, we'll eventually get ours because what goes around, comes around...in a good way."

This season, the Fighting Illini are being known in the NCAA as a team that passes up a good shot to take a great shot. That pretty much defines these Bulls in the NBA as well.

"These guys all have talent," said Skiles. "What I want to do is put them in position where scoring is easier so they save their energy for defense, which is also very important to me."

Count Wade as a big fan of Skiles' offensive and defensive philosophies.

"In Miami, they wanted to have me play the point because of my height," said Wade. "Then they could put a bigger guard [Eddie Jones] at 2 so he could defend against the taller shooting guards in the league.

"But I'm not a natural point guard. So they preferred to have Damon [Jones] play the point and put me at shooting guard. Problem was, that is a small lineup. Damon is 6' 3", and I'm 6' 4" playing against shooting guards who are 6' 6" or taller.

"But in Coach Skiles' system, I play point but I'm not necessarily running the offense. All five of us are involved in moving the ball around. That means I'm actually playing more shooting guard even though, technically, I'm called a point guard. It's a beautiful thing."

Indeed, such efficient and proficient passing is beautiful and rarely seen in the NBA. Next time you catch the Bulls on TV, notice the assists that they give. It's hard to find amidst all that scoring, but if you pay close enough attention, you'll see it.

Thu Aug 04, 2005 1:18 am

That record would be quite a feat to beat. I'd like to see that. 53+ assists in one game...wow...

Thu Aug 04, 2005 1:25 am

now that i'm playing only 8-10 min/qtr instead of the full 12, i pro'bly won't be getting 53+ assists per game anymore. in my first game playing 8 min/qtr, i got 32 assists...which is still better than the NBA record for average assists per game.

we'll see...

Nowitzki leads the way

Thanks to Gasol, that's the bucket and 1 for Nowitzki

For the first time since the trading deadline passed, someone not named LeBron, Dwyane, Amare or Colicky Boy led the Bulls in scoring.

Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 30 points, his first time leading the Bulls in scoring, and helped the Bulls down Memphis 91-74 at the United Center.

"I decided I wanted to lead the league in scoring," deadpanned Nowitzki.

The team can afford to joke around after gradually pulling away from a surprisingly strong Memphis team (42-27).

The Bulls led by only 4 after one and only 8 at the half, but extended the lead to 16 by the end of three quarters before the final score.

Memphis held the league's leading scorer Colicky Boy to a season-low 16 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists, and also held Dwyane Wade to 19 points and 4 assists, but Nowitzki and LeBron James stepped up.

James had 23 points, 7 rebounds and a game-high 6 assists. Nowitzki also had 8 rebounds, while Wade contributed with a game-high 11 boards.

"We had a strategy to contain Colicky Boy and their assist leader [Wade]," said Memphis' Pau Gasol, who led the Grizzlies with both 16 points and 8 rebounds. "But Dirk and LeBron came through."

"Who are you going to contain?" asked the Grizzlies' Stromile Swift, who had 10 points and 5 rebounds. "If you stop two guys, the other two guys go off. It's like plugging up their machine gun but getting blown up by their hand grenade."

"We had to step up our defensive intensity to offset our lack of scoring," said Bulls head coach Scott Skiles.

Indeed, Memphis' 74 points was the lowest output against the Bulls this year.

Is Skiles concerned that the team's players might be wearing down at the wrong time of the year, when the playoffs are looming?

"It's only one game," Skiles said. "We don't want to overreact. Let's see how we do over the next couple games and go from there."

Bulls outlast Bobcats

The Bobcats came tantalizingly close to an upset over the Bulls but got the same fate as many other teams before it.

The Bobcats trailed by just one point at halftime, cutting into a 11-point first quarter deficit against the Bulls. But Chicago built up the lead in the second half, finishing with a fairly routine 110-92 win over the Bocats at the Charlotte Coliseum.

"There was no halftime speech by Coach [Scott Skiles] or anyone else," said Wade. "No one threw any chairs in the locker room at halftime. We just came out after the break and kept playing our game."

Apparently, that was enough. LeBron James scored a game-high 28 points with 8 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki nearly had his second career triple-double with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Colicky Boy added 24 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. And Dwyane Wade had 18 points and 6 assists.

"I don't know what happened," said Charlotte's Kareem Rush, who scored 13 points but was only 3-of-11 threes and committed 6 turnovers. "We were right in the game, then we got down again. And no matter what we did, we couldn't put together a run to make a comeback in the second half."

The Bulls bench was outscored 25-4.

"There's nothing wrong with our bench," said Wade. "They didn't score much but they got more assists [10-7] than Charlotte's bench, and they outrebounded them too [4-0]."

The Bobcats (27-43) were led by Emeka Okafor's 20 points and 5 rebounds.

"He's a good player," said Nowitzki. "He'd be Rookie of the Year if not for a certain #21 [Colicky Boy]."

The Bulls now seek to close out March with a victory at home against Cleveland. A win would give the Bulls their second consecutive undefeated month, which would be a first in the NBA.

"Eh, who cares about that?" asked Colicky Boy. "I'm more interested in seeing [former teammates] Kirk [Hinrich] and Luol Deng again."

Bulls get second straight undefeated month

Former Cavalier LeBron James defends former Bull Kirk Hinrich

Call this game a tweener.

The Bulls never pulled away from Cleveland but they were never seriously threatened either.

After leading 24-18 at the end of one, 53-44 at the half and 84-76 at the end of three, the Bulls finished the Cavaliers 106-99 at the United Center.

Former Cavalier LeBron James led all scorers against his old team with 30 points complementing his game-high 8 rebounds and 7 assists.

"Cleveland was great," said James. "But Chicago has been out of this world. My teammates are top-shelf, the fans are awesome, and the pub in the country's third-largest market has been very good to me."

Former Bulls Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng each had solid but unspectacular games. Hinrich finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists while Deng scored 14 points with 4 rebounds. James outperformed the combined totals of Hinrich and Deng.

"I don't think LeBron went out tonight looking to outplay both of them," said Bulls guard Dwyane Wade. "He's not that type of player. It just happened that way."

The win closed out a perfect March for the Bulls (68-3), their NBA-record second consecutive undefeated month. The Bulls now sport three unbeaten months this season.

"It's a harder feat than it looks," said Nowitzki of going undefeated in a month. "I wasn't here for all of the undefeated February. But just going through March, I realize how difficult it is. The grind, fatigue, media spotlight, the pressure, and of course, every team getting up to try to beat you. It's not easy when you have a target on your back every night."

For the Bulls, Wade had 25 points, tied James for game-high rebound honors with 8, and dished a game-high 8 assists. Colicky Boy chipped in 19 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists, and Dirk Nowitzki added 18 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

"I stunk the joint up," said Colicky Boy. "But we got the win. That's the bottom line."

Drew Gooden led Cleveland (38-32) with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Former Bull Eric Piatkowski scored 7 points.

"It's not the first time we've played them since the trade," reminded Deng. "It's the first time coming back to Chicago for us, but there's not much else to say that we didn't say when we played in February.

"We're fighting for a playoff spot," Deng said. "Hopefully, we'll meet them in the playoffs."

Bulls sweep monthly player awards again
Fri, April 1, 2005

No April Fool's joke: the Bulls sweep the two monthly player awards again for the Eastern Conference.

LeBron James was named the Player of the Month for March, and Colicky Boy was named the Rookie of the Month for March.

James averaged 30.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 9.8 apg, 1.83 bpg, and 2.83 spg, while Colicky Boy averaged 33.0 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 12.1 apg, 1.0 bpg, and 7.94 spg.

"It's a nice award," said James at a press conference. "But the main award is the trophy for winning the NBA championship."

In the Western Conference, Houston's Tracy McGrady won Player of the Month honors with 23.2 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 4.9 apg, 1.69 bpg, and 1.38 spg. Seattle's Nick Collison was April's Rookie of the Month for the West, averaging 7.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.5 apg, 0.47 bpg and 0.59 spg.

This was the second straight month that the Bulls swept the two monthly player awards in the East. Last month, Dwyane Wade was the Player of the Month while Colicky Boy was the Rookie of the Month. Colicky Boy has been the Rookie of the Month in the East every month this season.

Don't let the first quarter fool you.

The Bulls led Charlotte by only five after the first quarter, but blew out to a 25-point halftime lead and cruised to a 124-79 laugher over the Bobcats at the United Center.

Emeka Okafor suffered a leg injury with 2:28 left in the third quarter, the Bulls already were leading by nearly 40 points at the time. Curiously, though Okafor returned to the game with 5:51 left in the game and the Bulls up by 42.

"Bad coaching move, in my opinion," said Colicky Boy. "The game was already over. Why risk making Oak's injury worse?"

Okafor finished the game with only 9 points and 1 rebound in 23 minutes of action.

"He's a competitor," said Bobcats head coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "Believe me, I tried to talk him out of playing."

Dwyane Wade led the Bulls (69-3) with 35 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Colicky Boy (26 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assists, 7 steals) and LeBron James (21 points, 10 assists, 4 steals) notched double-doubles, and Dirk Nowitzki added 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Brevin Knight led Charlotte (27-45) with 15 points.

After the game, the Bulls received word that Amare Stoudemire, scheduled to come off the DL, was still affected by the sore wrist.

"He'll be able to play," said Bulls head coach Scott Skiles. "But he'll be hampered a bit by the injury."
