Wiggins a real possibility to join high-flying Wizards next season
It's fair to say that fans of the Washington Wizards are pretty happy right now. Their team this week overtook the Philadelphia 76ers and now hold the best record in the league. The exciting young team coped fairly well with the loss of MVP co-favourite John Wall for a couple of weeks recently and since his return have taken their game to another level. They are currently on an eleven game winning streak which includes wins in Miami, Los Angeles and Denver.
The turnaround in fortunes of the perennial cellar dwellers has been amazing. They only managed twenty-seven wins last season and showed no sign of improving at all. But after some good fortune on draft day, with Orlando selecting Shabazz Muhammad with the first pick instead of Nerlens Noel, and the emergence of John Wall into a genuine superstar and Bradley Beal into one of the top scoring guards in the league. Add to that trio one of the most physically dominating big men in the league DeMarcus Cousins, and the Wizards have produced some very exciting run-and-gun style basketball this season. During they current winning streak Bradley Beal has been spectacular. He has averaged thirty points, six rebounds and five assists in the eleven games.
Wall has been amazing this season with his athletic dunking, great court vision and pinpoint passing. He and Miami's LeBron James are the leading candidates to be named most valuable player. Wall is the first player since John Stockton in the early 1990's to average over fourteen assists per game in the regular season. He is racking up fourteen points, four rebounds and over fifteen assists per game. It is perhaps just a coincidence that Wall is due to earn his first major contract at the end of the season. He's facing tough competition from the best player in the world who is going for his third straight MVP and fifth overall. LeBron is averaging twenty-four points, eight rebounds and six assists this season on a team that currently holds the third seed in the eastern conference. The final decision may come down to which individual's team finishes above the others.
Another reason for the Wizards to smile is the fact that the Toronto Raptors are having such a horrible season. They sit bottom of the eastern conference with a 20-53 record, the worst in the entire league. Washington own the Raptors' 2014 first round pick after acquiring it in the trade that sent Rudy Gay to Toronto. The ultimate irony for the Raptors is that the top prospect in the upcoming draft class is Andrew Wiggins, the Toronto native who is labelled as a once in a generation athlete. He has been lighting up the college scene with the Jayhawks this year and is the consensus number one pick amongst most media commentators.
At the time of the Gay trade there were rumours that the pick that the Raptors gave up was top one protected, just in case Wiggins was a possibility. There hasn't been any official confirmation or denial from either franchise though. The Raptors could really use the boost that Wiggins would give them, especially as Steve Nash will be retiring at the end of the season.
