Wolves fall apart in fourth, Suffer first loss to Cavs
Cavaliers 109, Wolves 102
October 30, 2009 | Cleveland Cavaliers (2-1) @ Minnesota Timberwolves (1-1) | Season Series: Cavs 1-0 Wolves
Long story short: In the second game of the season, our team played the defending Central Division champion Cavaliers to a standstill, before falling short in the end. We were -13 on the boards after being +5 against the Nets, and LeBron James dropped 33 on us. Corey Brewer was a bright spot in the loss, with 18 points.
The Rundown: The first half was a high scoring affair, with neither squad taking advantage. Thanks to 10 early points by Shaq, who abused Al Jefferson in the paint, the Cavaliers led by one after the first quarter. The second period was the same, with neither team missing anything. LeBron began to catch fire in the second period, while Kevin Love was relegated to the bench with foul trouble. The Cavs opened up a seven point lead, but we got a pair of treys by Damien Wilkins and rookie Wayne Ellington to bring us within one at halftime.
We opened the third with a 13-4 run, but despite strong shot defense, the Cavaliers bullied us on the boards, and slowly, but surely retook control of the game. Maurice Williams drained a halfcourt shot at the buzzer, as the Cavaliers opened up the fourth with a two point lead. We would not regain the lead. The Cavs started scoring at will again, and we couldn't match their offensive firepower. Down 99-86, it looked like it was over. Rambis called a timeout, subbing Jonny Flynn, who had been struggling with his shot, back into the game.
Flynn went on a scoring tangent, scoring 9 of his 16 in the final minutes. Al Jefferson was also instrumental in the run, which cut the lead to just four: 103-99, with a minute remaining. Unfortunately, we came up empty in crunch time. We failed to get a stop on the next possession, then Wilkins airballed a three. Shaq was sent to the line, but he shocked the world by sinking both. Kevin Love redeemed his quiet game (9 points, 5 boards, 5 fouls) somewhat by sinking his first trey of the season, but Mo Williams finished us off with a pair of free throws as Cleveland took it 109-102. The crowd, as per new policy, received free chalupas after the team capped the 100 point mark.
Individual observations: Corey Brewer could be a key member of our team in the years to come. While he didn't exactly stop LeBron, he chipped in a team-high 18 points. Big Al played fairly well, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine boards. Jonny Flynn once again outplayed Ramon Sessions, who scored just 4 points on 2-6 shooting, and doesn't seem to be a very good fit on the team. Mo Williams had 24 points, while Shaq put up 20 and 9 boards on 8-11 shooting. We seem to have trouble defending prolific big men, as Brook Lopez dropped 23 and 13 on us.
Final thoughts: Nobody expected us to win, or even come close, but we put up a great fight, cracking the century mark, and fighting until the end. Our failure to secure boards was a concern, but that could be partially attributed to Kevin Love playing only 28 minutes. We didn't have the talent to defeat a Cavaliers team still adjusting to a new roster on our home floor, but we showed a lot of heart and potential. All in all, it was worth the $10 (being able to sneak into the empty front rows is a perk of being a Wolves fan) and venturing in the 14 degree weather to go see.![]()

November 2, 2009 - Ramon Sessions enjoyed his best game as a Timberwolf to date, but his first career triple-double wasn't enough to prevent the Wolves' fourth quarter collapse against the Clippers. Minnesota led for most of the first half, and continued to be in control in the third. A late run sparked by Baron Davis's first three-point make of the season got the Clippers back into it, and in the fourth, the Wolves suffered a scoring drought. The Clippers would go on to win comfortably, 105-92, improving to 2-3 on the season. The Wolves, meanwhile, fall to 1-3.23 31 24 14 92 (1-3) | Sessions: 18/10/10 | Love: 21/5/3 | Jefferson: 17/6/2

Garnett Drops 23 and 12 In Blowout Of Former Team
Celtics 106, Wolves 90
Long story short: Kevin Garnett arrived in his old stomping grounds to a standing ovation. After a mercifully quiet first quarter, in which neither team pulled ahead, KG caught fire in the second quarter, and the Celtics proved too much for Minnesota. Despite very solid output from Kevin Love, the 2008 champions pulled away for a 106-90 victory, handing us our fourth consecutive loss.
The Rundown: The game looked like a repeat of the Cavaliers game at first: a close battle at home against another Eastern Conference power. The tightly contested first quarter saw the Celtics finish with a one point lead. The second quarter opened with Jonny Flynn posterizing Paul Pierce (see play of the game below), but after that it was all Celtics. Garnett went 4-4 in the quarter, and Ray Allen started to heat up, and the Celtics opened up a 12 point lead. Fortunately, we finished the half on an 8-2 run, to keep within striking distance going into intermission.
Both teams were on a role in the third quarter. Neither squad could miss a shot, as field goal percentage was in the sixties for both sides. Unfortunately, we could not take advantage. We got as close as within 3 points, but Boston was always able to hold us off. When Eddie House got a four-point play late in the quarter, we knew it was over. Boston opened up the final period strong, opening up a 15 point lead. Both teams let their reserves play out the rest of the game, and the C's cruised to a 106-90 victory.
Individual observations: Rajon Rondo quietly lit up Flynn. He had just 10 points, but accompanied them with 16 dimes, 7 boards and 4 steals. We lost the game partially because of our 14 turnovers (to their 7), and Rondo was a major reason for that. Ramon Sessions was solid off the bench, scoring 12 points. He and Flynn played a dozen minutes together in a 2 PG lineup, that worked surprisingly well. While Sessions isn't expected to start any time soon, it is encouraging. Corey Brewer continues to show promise as a solid starter, scoring 12 points and dishing 4 assists. Despite neither Al Jefferson or Love rebounding in double digits, we tied on the battle of the boards.
Final thoughts: A contender blew out a rebuilding team. No surprises here. Kevin Love breaking his streak of 5 rebound games was nice, and our young guys showed some promise. Ultimately though, we just aren't that good. Winning teams will continue to walk all over us until our players either suddenly become good, or we get a real franchise player. Al Jefferson had 17 and 7 tonight, which was pretty much in line with his season averages. That simply isn't good enough. We are now on four straight losses. Thank god the Bucks are coming to town on Friday.Play Of The Game:
