The Memphis Grizzlies hope to teach the Orlando Magic a lesson today: that defending a division title will be tougher than improving to win one like they did last season. Orlando, which went from 40-42 in 2006-07 to Southeast Division champions last season, defeated Atlanta 110-95 at home on Wednesday, the Hawks arguably being their primary rival in the division. Dwight Howard had 18 points and 18 rebounds, as the Magic shot 55 percent from the field and showed the kind of effort that produced 52 wins in 2007-08. "They played the game like they really, really wanted to win it," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said of the Magic. "You can't take anything for granted, you can't take any team for granted. We have to do it as a team to get better. We have to stay focused knowing that every team is going to play us as hard as Orlando did."
Back to Memphis, the young Grizzlies will play their home opener tonight. The 22-year-old Howard has recorded four straight double-doubles against the Grizzlies, averaging 25.5 points and 16.0 rebounds while shooting 79 percent (34-for-43) in those games, and posting two 20-20 efforts. Not much is expected from the Grizz, who are coming off a 22-60 season as they try to navigate the difficult Southwest Division. But they showed some grit in an 132-109 loss at Houston on Wednesday. Rudy Gay had 19 points while rookie O. J. Mayo added 23 for Memphis, but the Rockets limited the Grizzlies to 48 percent shooting and outrebounded them 47-37. "We took some big strides,'' Gay insisted. "We will learn from this. It was a little sloppy. We were scrappy and that is what we need to do to be successful.''
The youthful starting backcourt of Mayo and Michael Conley will have to make the biggest strides if the Grizzlies are to be competitive. The two 20-year-olds were a combined 10-for-30 shooting, with Mayo - the third overall pick - missing five of seven attempts from 3-point range and finishing 9 of 22 overall. "It came down to execution and we made some turnovers down the stretch," said Conley. "The big key was they made shots and we didn't. We just couldn't make our 3s, and if we had the game would have been different." Gay scored 52 points and shot 62.5 percent (20-for-32) as Memphis split two games with Orlando last season. Hedo Turkoglu hit six 3-pointers and finished with 26 points in a 112-85 Magic rout at Memphis on Jan. 23 in the most recent game between the teams.

Excellent preview dude.. Nice images too! Keep it up... And hopefully you can a t least finish a season with this franchise..
Sat May 09, 2009 3:36 pm
This is really cool and all, technically above and beyond all other dynasties. Aside of the fact that you are using a team that can win the title in its first season, the reason I haven't been following this much has been all the filler. Game previews as long as my monthly recaps, the prediction game, there is just no way you'll be able to get very far with this.
However, you are a better dynasty maker than I, so prove me wrong.

Stan Van Gundy demands more offense in Orlando. Marc Iavaroni wants to open up the defense in Memphis. So far, the advantage goes to Van Gundy's style as Dwight Howard and Mickael Pietrus scored 20 and 15 points, and the Magic used a strong defensive effort to shake off Jameer Nelson's poor shooting night and beat the Grizzlies 87-79. Nelson had only 4 points and 5 assists, shooting 2-of-11, 2 days after posting a 12-10 effort against Atlanta. Rashard Lewis racked up 14, while Hedo Turkoglu had 12 points in 5-of-7 from the floor. The Magic limited the Grizzlies to an 8-point first quarter but suffered a 29-16 3rd quarter by Memphis that saw the score tied at the beginning of the fourth period. "I guess you can call it a low,'' Iavaroni admitted. "One of the worst first quarters I've ever seen, I'm serious. But I think we came out strong in the third with a lot of energy and we were able to tie the game in the middle of the period.''
"We knew we had to win tonight when the score was tied, especially when we had that perfect first quarter,'' Nelson said. "Tonight was a must-win. We've got to muster some energy and fight through the storm to cement a good playoff spot, even when we are at the beginning of November.'' Marc Gasol had 21 points and thirteen rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 2-of-15 in the first quarter, making Iavaroni's offensive system look awful. With O.J. Mayo 3-of-17 in the game (0-of-9 treys), scoring only 8 points in the night, they later went scoreless for more than 4 minutes to start the second quarter but recovered in the third. "We missed a lot of chippies, a whole lot of chippies. Close to the basket shots. In this offense, that's just the way it works,'' Darko Milicic (9 points and 4 rebs) said. "You get a lot of open shots. We move the ball, you get a lot of open jump shots. We just have to knock them down. These last couple of games we haven't, but I think it would be a complete different story if we do.'' The Magic got off to a good start with that 25-8 lead shooting 69 percent in the first quarter (9-of-12). They were still ahead by four at halftime, surviving an ugly stretch during a sloppy second quarter, when Jefferson and Villanueva missed open layups on the same possession, then Bogut hit the bottom of the backboard on the next trip.
Leading 45-27 at halftime, Memphis scored the first 8 points of the third quarter, being down 47-39 lead on Hakim Warrick's 3-pointer with 9:57 remaining. The Grizzlies finally got on the board on Quinton Ross's 3-pointer with 5:17, tying the game at 67. Redd went to the locker room when he fell awkwardly chasing a loose ball late in the quarter on a play that ended with Bogut's dunk that extended Milwaukee's lead to 72-56 with 2:19 left. "We never attack almost until we get in desperate situations, and that's offensively and defensively,'' Iavaroni said. "It's like we're on our heels the whole game and we're kind of waiting for something bad to happen to us. And we're going to have to get over that.''
Game Notes
• Memphis exercised the fourth-year option on forward Rudy Gay and guard Kyle Lowry, while picking up the third-year option on guards Michael Conley and Javaris Crittenton;
• The last time the Grizzlies started three rookies was their initial season in Memphis when Shane Battier, Pau Gasol and Will Solomon started three games;
• The Magic shot 4-of-7 treys (57 percent) while Memphis made 6-of-29 (20 percent);
• Michael Conley (17 points) and Gasol were the only Grizzlies to score in double figures.

So far this season, the road has been unkind to the Sacramento Kings, and it's not about to get any easier. The Kings have already visited Minnesota and Miami and now continue their trip on Saturday night against the Orlando Magic, who are seeking their third victory this season and stay undefeated. The Kings (1-1), opening the new season with four straight away from home, defeated the Heat 99-92 on Friday. Sacramento limited Miami to an 11-point third quarter, and shot 41 percent (38-of-91) from the field and 40 percent (6-of-15) from 3-point range. "There is no explanation for it," Kings coach Reggie Theus said. Perhaps the only explanation might be that lack of success is typical for Sacramento when playing away from home. The Kings opened the season with a 14-point loss on Wednesday in Minnesota, where the team missed 16-of-20 3-point attempts.
The Kings' 12 road wins last season were the fewest since the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season, and the fewest over a full season since they had six in 1997-98. Sacramento hasn't had a winning record away from home since 2002-03 as they also have dropped five of their last seven visits to Orlando. Center Spencer Hawes, who averaged 3.2 rebounds per game as a rookie last season, had 9 boards against the Heat and 13 against the Timberwolves, averaging 11.0 through two games. A first-round pick in 2007, Hawes has been starting in place of Brad Miller, traded to the Chicago Bulls. That trade brought forward Andres Nocioni to Sac-Town, the only other player scoring in double figures, as he had 14 points against Miami after tallying 12 over Minnesota.
Coming off a 52-win season and a playoff appearance in 2007-08, Orlando (2-0) will search a 3-0 record following a 87-79 triumph over Memphis on Friday, with center Dwight Howard posting 20 and 13 rebounds. Orlando has shot 50.5 percent from the field (3rd-best) and 75 percent at the free-throw line this season. The Magic rebounded from a 6-for-10 performance from 3-point range against Atlanta on Wednesday to hit 4-of-7 from behind the arc versus Memphis, a little more quiet. Last season, Orlando was among the league top five teams in field goal percentage (.474) and 3-point shooting (.392). "We'll get over it," said swingman Mickael Pietrus, who has averaged 18.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in the first two games. "There's some adversity that teams go through at the beginning of the season, some times at the end. I'm glad we're going through it now rather than at the end when we really need to buckle down.
Howard led the Magic with 26 points and 10 rebounds in the last meeting between the two teams, a 112-93 victory on Feb. 24 in Orlando. Kevin Martin had 21 points, and was 3-for-3 from 3-point range for Sacramento. He's averaging 12.5 this season following a 22-point night against Miami and a 3-point effort battling Minnesota.
