Gilbert Arenas leads Wizards past Kings

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 (AP)-- Gilbert Arenas wasn’t much like himself at the start of the season, just averaging 20 points a night, it is not sitting well with Agent Zero.
He certainly had things figured out Monday night.
Arenas showed more spring in his step and more accuracy with his shot, finishing with 37 points, 9 assists and six rebounds to lead the Washington Wizards to a 102-95 victory over the Sacramento Kings.
The All-Star guard has not been himself lately. But he decided he needed to get a feel for the basketball, so he went to the gym to shoot Sunday night, then hoisted up 100 3-pointers before tipoff Monday.
“I was coming to games cold turkey, wasn't even getting the ball up, just banking off my natural ability, and I was struggling,” Arenas said.
“My handle wasn't as crisp.”
Deshawn Stevenson calling for the ball. He was
huge down the stretch hitting some clutch jumpers.
Deshawn Stevenson scored 21 points and Antawn Jamison had 14 points and 7 rebounds for the Wizards, while Kevin Martin led the Kings with 18 points. Both teams have identical records (5-5) at the start of the game, after the win the Wizards are now one game above .500.
“We've got to make some adjustments,” said Sacramento’s Chris Webber who had 14 points and 13 rebounds.
“We're a little concerned right now, but we don't feel like the year is over.”
Arenas entered Wednesday shooting only 35.6 percent from downtown. But he was on target against Indiana, going 5-for-8.
He also directed things well, getting his teammates involved in the flow of the offense. That, of course, is what thrilled coach Eddie Jordan.
“He has grown,” Jordan said.
“He has definitely matured.”
In the last 2 minutes of the fourth quarter, Arenas made a 3-pointer, stole the ball twice from Mike Bibby at the other end, fed Deshawn Stevenson two times for an open a jumper, then drove hard to the basket and drew a foul with 50 seconds left. Those free throws proved to be the nail in the coffin as Washington finished it, 102-95.
“He seemed more calm and more patient than the first games of the season,” fellow Wizard Antawn Jamison said.
“We all knew it was going to take some time for him to get it going and to get comfortable, and now you're starting to see signs of that.”
Washington was booed during its previous home game, a 33-point loss to the Houston Rockets on Saturday that dropped the Wizards to 4-5 at home to start the season.
With this win against the Sacramento Kings, the Wizards have a more respectable record at home (5-5).
“We don't have any rhythm offensively tonight,” Kevin Martin said. “We had a great game last night at Atlanta where it seems like everything was going in. Whatever has happened since then, I'm not sure.”
The two teams will meet again on December 18 at Sacramento.
Notes: Gilbert Arenas’ 37 points was a season high. ...Washington is now second in the Southeast division with the Orlando Magic leading the way. ... Sacramento was horrible from downtown where they shot .174 percent.

NBA Rumors: Monday, Nov. 20
Sources are saying that Heat superstar Dwyane Wade is happy with the Miami Heat’s current talent
situation. Well, that might be true because five of their players are averaging double digits in
points. Maybe Wade should think about his own talent as he is just averaging a mere 16 points
per contest which is third best in his team. The Flash better be quick to get his act together as Miami
only have four wins in nine outings.
The Utah Jazz has been rumored to moving a center to another team. They currently have four
centers on their roster namely Mehmet Okur, Jarron Collins, Kyrylo Fesenko and Rafael Araujo.
It is still not known which player is on the block.
