Spurs fall to Lakers in Los Angeles
Bryant and Odom make a statement

San Antonio Spurs 93-105 Los Angeles Lakers
( 23-30 , 19-27 , 20-27 , 31-21 )
[Spurs Boxscore][Lakers Boxscore]

Image

1st Half
Lakers now faced the Spurs on their home floor. Both teams are looking to be top title contenders and today. On this night both teams were battling for Western Conference supremacy. San Antonio's strategy was clear from the start: give the ball to Duncan downlow and let him decide what to do with it. It worked for a while, but the Spurs didn't know what to do with Kobe, who seemed determined to take over scoring 17 points in the first quarter. Michael Finley got in to the act as Duncan's presence downlow made room for open jumpers, but with Lamar Odom shooting well along Bryant, the Lakers surprisingly seemed to cruise past the Spurs on this one.

2nd Half
Tony Parker started to rack up points as well as Spurs tried to turn the momentum, but instead the Lakers started to run and gun changing their offense into an alley-oop galore. San Antonio had to start fouling as the Bryant-Odom duo showed no signs of slowing down. The Lakers started the last quarter with a 7-0 run and they started to ease the tempo as the game was decided. The Spurs did cut the deficit by 10 but at that time it was already too late as Los Angeles had control from the start and never gave it up.

Lakers overcome Garnett, Wolves
Another stellar performance by Odom and Kobe

Los Angeles Lakers 81-77 Minnesota Timberwolves
( 12-25, 20-18, 28-22, 21-12 )
[Lakers Boxscore][Timberwolves Boxscore]

1st Half
Both teams started off sloppy. The Lakers couldn't make shots while the Wolves seemed determined to pound the ball inside. Minnesota started the game with a 11-0 run, credit to good defense that forced LA to turn the ball over numerous times. Out of the Lakers' 12 points in the first Lamar Odom scored 10. Minnesota opened the second with a 10-2 run mainly by high percentage shots. At the half they had a comfortable lead. Lakers' Kobe Bryant had four points at this point.

2nd Half
Los Angeles got into the game right at the start of the second half, while Minnesota relied solely on Kevin Garnett who answered. During the third LA managed to get a few runs and made it an even game eventually taking the lead in the fourth and putting it away in the final minutes.

Lakers complete blockbuster trade with Raptors
Acquire Bosh, lose Kwame

Image

The Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors finished a surprise blockbuster deal this morning that sends all-star forward Chris Bosh and point guard Jose Calderon to Los Angeles. The Toronto Raptors get Kwame Brown, newly acquired Brendan Haywood and youngster Ronny Turiaf. Lakers clearly were tired of waiting for Kwame Brown to delevop to his full potential, whatever that is.

The Lakers clearly benefited from this trade. First of all the get all-star Chris Bosh, who joins Lamar Odom and Kobe Bryant what seems to be an offensive lineup that can match up any team any time. Jose Calderon is a good back up point guard, especially for the Lakers, who don't have a clear starting PG. The absence of Brown and Haywood inside will most likely be filled to give Andrew Bynum more minutes. One thing the Lakers also got was a free roster spot, looking forward to next year's draft and free agent signings.

The Raptors, in short, are a mess once again. Now they got a squad featuring of inconsistent big men Antonio Davis, Kwame Brown, Brendan Haywood and Rafael Aroujo, small-time declining likes of Alvin Williams and Latrell Sprewell plus some 'who cares'-type of 1-3 year old n00bs. The best player on this team might be Fred Jones.

Image

The Lakers also got themselves more room for next year's free agent signings, currently a little over 4,000,000 points under the cap. Here are some of the upcoming free agents :

Ben Wallace
Jason Terry
Sam Cassell
Tashaun Prince
Ronald Murray
Bonzi Wells
Alonzo Mourning
Chris Wilcox
Drew Gooden
Nazr Mohammed

Thriller in LA
Lakers score 40 in last quarter to break down Nuggets

Denver Nuggets 111-114 Los Angeles Lakers
[Nuggets Boxscore][Lakers Boxscore]

Image

Chris Bosh's debut in LA was a night to remembered. Denver started the game by launching a horde of three pointers while Lakers were looking to get inside points. Smush Parker played really well on both ends but was pulled away by early foul trouble. Denver had a 11-2 run in the first as their bench contributed to put the Nuggets up by double digits early. The Lakers tried to get back by playing better defense and it worked in the second and third. In the last quarter the game was tight as both teams shot well.
The Lakers got the edge at the final 20 seconds when Kobe Bryant blocked Kenyon Martin's dunk attempt and scored on the following possession, putting the Lakers in position to take the game. The Nuggets got the ball back, and found Kenyon Martin again with 8.2 seconds left, who this time was fouled. Martin missed the second of his two, which would have tied the game. After that Denver had to foul Smush Parker, who made both free throws to seal the game.

McKie demolishes Bucks, himself
Lakers continue cruising

Los Angeles Lakers 107-77 Milwaukee Bucks
( 20-21 , 36-24 , 27-17 , 24-15 )
[Lakers Boxscore][Bucks Boxscore]

Image

1st Half
The Bucks started strong and surprisingly took a one point lead into the second quarter. After that the story of the game unraveled as an unexpected one-man offensive force, Lakers' PG Aaron McKie scored 17 points in the quarter as the Lakers took a commanding lead, which Michael Redd cut down with two three pointers to end the half. Lakers lead 56-45 at this point.

2nd Half
Milwaukee frenzied to cut the lead to three to start the half, but then it was more of Aaron McKie, who managed to muscle in a four point play as well. He shot two pointers and drove to the hole with no mercy putting Lakers up by 21. He continued his miraculous play in the last quarter, but then injured his left leg on a play under the basket. It seemed obvious that he could have gone for 50, now he finished with 43 as the injury ended his game, but at that point it was too late for the Bucks, who lost with a 40 point deficit.
McKie's magical performance left everyone in awe, including the Laker team, which excluding Bryant was left pretty much scoreless, everyone scored single digits.
