Nice win man cant wait for season to start

Sun Jan 01, 2006 2:21 pm

Nice win. Marion leads the way again and a great effort by Jimmy Jackson off the bench. It's only preseason but Nash needs to step up, 2 assists in a game is not a usual stat for Nash. (N)

Sun Jan 01, 2006 2:46 pm

agreed what sensation said...2 assist for Nash is way too little..

Thanks man :) I'm trying Thomas and Grant right now. If they don't fill that void, I will trade for a good center...

Jones Gets Shot
to Make Impact

Suns fans might not have known a lot about James Jones when he was acquired from Indiana for a second-round pick and signed to a four-year, $11.1 million contract in August, but they are about to get a crash course in what he’s all about.

No one player could benefit more from Amaré Stoudemire’s long-term absence due to knee surgery than the 6-foot-8 Jones, who will likely move into the vacant spot in the starting lineup and will have a good chance to earn big minutes if his shooting eye and reputation as a smart player and defender hold true.

But, so far, not good. Even with Steve Nash (flu) out of action, Jones only collected 4 points, in 1-of-6 shooting, in a 109-106 win over the Sonics in Seattle.

Jones made his first appearance at home tonight when the Suns faced the Los Angeles Clippers at America West Arena. Jones again started at small forward, but again scored 4 points, all free throws.

"He’s young and a lot of people don’t know about him because he hasn’t played a whole lot," Suns coach Mike D’Antoni said. "He didn't have good games, but he’s solid, he shoots the ball real well and he defends — that translates into a pretty good ballplayer. We have someone (Nash) who will pass him the ball, and if he can knock down shots, he’s gonna get a lot of points in this system."

Jones shot 40 percent last year, but his ability to defend is also important. Shawn Marion will likely play Stoudemire’s power forward spot on offense, but don’t be surprised to see Jones pick up Marion’s man on the defensive end.

"We’ll figure out a way to score, we just have to defend better than last year," D’Antoni said. "James seems to have that ability. He was in a good system in Indiana where they put a premium on defense. He’s 6-8, he’s long and he’s very intelligent."

D’Antoni was pleased to see Jones pick up the concept of helping on the weakside quickly and anticipating defensively, making steals and deflecting balls — things that send the Phoenix offense off and running. His play has allowed Phoenix, at this point, the luxury of bringing Jim Jackson and his ability to provide instant offense in off the bench.

"Jimmy is an important piece and a veteran leader for us,’’ D’Antoni said. "He’ll get the same minutes he’s had, but he might be a guy on the floor at the end of the game as opposed to the beginning. We’re not set in stone on anything, but we need a surprise, someone to step up and take over a spot to help us. As I'm still trying different lineups, Jimmy will start on Monday, when we face Utah in Salt Lake City."

Anyway, if Jones blossoms in Phoenix, D’Antoni won’t be surprised at all.

Nice article man. Looks really good.

Tue Jan 03, 2006 8:49 am

yea i like james, when i saw him play down here i thought he was more of a big man, compared to darius rice hes huge but after seeing him in indy and phx he is a wing and along with ur other guards and fowards your really deep from the perimeter but the loss of amare and even with a amare inside your pretty weak, i think he is better at the PF but like u said try out thomas and grant and if they dont cut it explore trades

[ SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 17 (Ticker) ] -- Raja Bell received a nice welcome, then became somewhat of a rude guest.

Bell scored nine of his 14 points during the decisive fourth-quarter burst as the Phoenix Suns notched a 119-103 preseason victory over the Utah Jazz.

After scoring in double figures in each of his two seasons with the Jazz, Bell will be expected to provide offense and well as his normally solid defense this year for the Suns. When he was introduced, Bell received a warm ovation from the Delta Center's crowd. Bell scored the other 5 points in the first quarter.

Shawn Marion again led Phoenix in points and rebounds, with 29 and 11, when Steve Nash added 22 points and 8 assists.

James Jones is still struggling, this time with 7 points. Jimmy Jackson, who took Jones' spot in the lineup for this match, had 17 points in 5-of-14 from the field.

All the players who saw action for Phoenix scored. The best player from the bench for the Suns were Boris Diaw, with 8 points and 3 rebounds, and Eddie House, with 5.

"It was subconscience. I felt pretty good, I didn’t feel nervous or anything," said Bell, when an Arizona Republic's reporter asked him about his first game back in Utah as a visitor.

Jazz's first-round pick Deron Williams scored, from the bench, 19 points and 4 assists in 24 minutes. Milt Palacio also had a good night with 10 points. 3 players had double-doubles for Utah.

"We are improving. We're not going to rush this at all. We have 82 games... We didn’t win tonight, but we can learn from this," Devin Brown added.

Carlos Boozer (Left hamstring injury) and Matt Harpring (Right knee soreness) didn't see action for the Jazz.

* Diaw with the lay-up
* Devin Brown with the dunk for Utah
* Eddie House scores the 3-pointer
* Matrix with the freestyle dunk over AK!
* Marion again, this time over Okur
* AK shoots, with Jackson and Thomas trying to block him
