BREAKING KNICKS NEWS

In a shock move earlier today, Knicks' GM Isiah Thomas announced his resignation from his position as the team's General Manager. In what might be seen as an even more shocking move, the Knicks replaced Thomas with the relatively unknown Jimmy "J.D!" Dexter, who has turned around many minor league franchises into winning situations. Where the Knicks sourced this guy is anyone's guess, but he is sure to get a traditional Knicks' welcome, a grilling by the media who will try to eat this guy up. Where does this leave Larry Brown, the Knicks' new esteemed coach? Well, that is anyone's guess.

The first order of business that Knicks' owner James Dolan assigned to the team's new GM was to hire some staff to support Brown's cause.

Image
Dolan wasn't too charitable as he didn't give Mr. Dexter much money to work with

THE KNICKS' COACHING STAFF

ASSISTANT COACHES

With only $1.87 million to work with, Dexter got right to work as he went out and after assistant coach Vin Lenard. Lenard wanted a 3 year deal at about $785,000 per year. Dexter came out with a 2 year, $730,000 offer.

Image

Vin Lenard readily accepted the offer as he joins legendary coach Larry Brown on the sidelines.

Image

Vin Lenard is a Big Man specialist and Dexter wishes to develop some of his young big men, such as Michael Sweetney and rookies Channing Frye and David Lee. Whilst he's never had much experience with athleticism training, fortunately the Knicks are already pretty athletic and need to improve other aspects of their games.

TRAINERS

With an assistant coach in the fold, Dexter moved his focus onto finding a solid trainer to help the always hobbled Knickerbockers. Realising that the Knicks always seem to suffer leg injuries (see: Allan Houston and Penny Hardaway), Dexter wanted to have a specialist who could hopefully help to prevent such further injuries. Unfortunately there were not too many quality trainers available who specialise in leg injuries, so Dexter turned his focus to the best available candidate in their price range, which turned out to be Dorgan Cowell.

Image

Cowell wanted a 1 year deal at $365,000. Dexter dropped that to 1 year at $333,000 and they quickly struck a deal.

Image

SCOUTS

The final order of business for J.D! was to sign a quality scout. Dexter is still not a believer on the international player and he really wanted an experienced scout who specialised in scouting the college game. With not enough money to acquire two good scouts, Dexter concentrated on getting one quality scout and immediately cornered Ernie Fielding, who has been around the block more times than one can remember.

Image

Fielding wanted a 2 year deal at a hefty $769,000 per year. Dexter met his request fairly as he relented and gave him a 2 year deal at $745,000 per year.

Image

With that signing, Dexter is out of money and Vin Lenard, Dorgan Cowell and Ernie Fielding join the Knicks' coaching staff.

KNICKS' TRAINING CAMP

Players who impressed coaching staff during training camp were:

C/PF- Channing Frye

PF- Michael Sweetney

SF- Trevor Ariza

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREEN-ER ON THE OTHER SIDE

Many of the Knicks' faithful questioned Isiah Thomas' decision to pass on uber-talented high schooler Gerald Green, who ended up sliding down to the 18th pick, held by the Division rival Boston Celtics. The Knicks might dread passing on Green if his early signs of improvement are anything to go by.

WORD OUT OF THE KNICKS' CAMP (OCT '05 EDITION)

This monthly feature will inform viewers the progress of the players, as well as potential trade rumours, and most importantly, who is in Larry Brown's doghouse.

TRADE TALK

The Knicks have a plethora of SF's so starting SF Tim Thomas appears to be the odd man out. He is in the last year of his deal and the Knicks won't want to lose him without compensation so look for a possible trade to come sometime this season, probably closer to the trade deadline.

DAVID LEE WITH A CAPITAL D

David Lee is a talented, athletic forward that many think can help this Knicks' ball club. But in order for him to get meaningful minutes in the Big Apple, he will have to work on his defense. Assistant coach Vin Lenard will be working with Lee on his defensive game over the next month as he opens the season on the team's IR.

IN LARRY'S DOGHOUSE

The Rookies (Frye, Robinson, Lee) - Why? Because they are rookies of course and Larry has a history of hating on rookies. The MSG faithful won't like this, but Larry is leading the show, so expect these rookies to be played sparingly early and have to earn every second of PT that they get.

Maurice Taylor - Larry Brown doesn't like players who don't put in everything, and well, Mo more than often doesn't. If anyone can get Mo on his game mentally, then it is Brown who did wonders with Rasheed Wallace. But for the moment, Maurice Taylor is in Larry's doghouse.

KNICKS ANNOUNCE OPENING NIGHT ROSTER

The New York Knicks finalised their roster by signing PG Jamison Brewer to a 1 year deal at league minimum, $720,000. This move was made by Dexter in order to bring a steady third PG onto the roster. It is unlikely that Brewer will see much, if any, time during the season unless injuries strike the New York roster.

Without further ado, here is your 2005/06 New York Knickerbockers....

ROSTER CONTRACT SITUATION

Let's take at a quick look at the outstanding contracts on the Knicks' roster, and the future outlook of the major headaches.

Year 1:

Image

Penny Hardaway's mammoth contract comes off the books at the end of the season. If re-signed, it will be a small fraction of that sum. Trevor Ariza is team's future so look for a long-term deal to be secured here. As for Tim Thomas, with Ariza showing more promise, you'd have to be thinking that Thomas might be dealt before the All-Star break.

Year 2:

Image

The huge contracts of Allan Houston, Maurice Taylor and Malik Rose finally all come off the books. Their futures are uncertain, as is Michael Sweetney, who seems to have two years to prove himself worthy of an extension.

Year 3:

Image

Currently no free agents' contracts expiring this season.

Year 4:

Image

Marbury's mega-deal is finally over, and the future of the trio of rookies (if they are still around) is decided.

Year 5:

Image

Q's deal is solid, but new GM Jimmy Dexter is not happy with Isiah's signing of Jerome James. He'll be given a chance, but Dexter's patience could wear thin pretty quickly.

Year 6:

Image

The last player whose contract is up is Jamal Crawford, who given his history, will be lucky to still be in Knicks' colours half way through his contract.

This is amazing X !!

Love the whole off season / training camp thing looking forward to seeing some recaps.

Mon Oct 03, 2005 10:37 pm

cheers, seems like I'll have a couple more Knicks' fans on board this time around 8-)

recaps will probably be monthly ones since I'm only on a 29 game season and due to time constraints, but hope you enjoy nonetheless....

Mon Oct 03, 2005 10:41 pm

wow dude great stuff so far
looks good, keep it up.

Mon Oct 03, 2005 10:55 pm

May i make a lineup suggestion?

Just thinking maybe a lineup of....

PG-Crawford - Big guard playing point and cause prob on defence.
SG-Marbury - Coach Brown said he wanted to move Stephon over.
SF-Q-Rich - Better power game than TT and a better rebounder.

I think this is the lineup that the knicks will use this year if reports are right, it also allow Nate to get some real minutes at the point.

Mon Oct 03, 2005 11:04 pm

Yay you signed my bitch Jamison Brewer, he better get playing time or else i'm going to hurt you X

Mon Oct 03, 2005 11:17 pm

Amazing in-depth offseason report! (Y)

Mon Oct 03, 2005 11:20 pm

 You hurt my feeling with the Gerald Green situation.
Just make sure you'll resign Ariza at season's end and let go of the other guys. I think after a couple of games you'll feel how and when to play Ariza and he'll be a pretty big part of the team, maybe even 6th or 7th man. (Y)

Was that remark about Crawford's contract a hint for a future trade or just to make it look even more close to real?

Mon Oct 03, 2005 11:48 pm

Oh man. Another X Dynasty. Great. Hopefully it'll be as good as the Bobcats one, or even better. Good luck man. Ill be checking up daily.

Mon Oct 03, 2005 11:51 pm

wow X, you started this with a bang....... this is what a dynasty should look like...... impressive :applaud:

Tue Oct 04, 2005 9:21 am

Too put it simply, that start was brilliant :applaud:

I too believe that Q-Rich should start over TT, but then of course you are limiting Ariza's minutes.

Anyway I look foward to the first game updates (Y)

Oh BTW Check you PM's

my lineup is in no ways set....I'm basically rolling with the previous year's starters with James in the middle....this will no doubt change as I actually think my 2nd unit is stronger or at least as strong as my first unit :P at the moment Tim Thomas will start at SF and besides, his trade value might be realistically considered higher as a starter than as a reserve  I also like Q more, but he will get big minutes off the bench and play both SG and SF and if he performs, he will get his chance....also, Marbury is at PG for now, as will be noted in the next day or two....

he's only there to look good in a suit mate

sorry mate, couldn't help it when I received that PDA message  as for Ariza, he's definitely in the team's future and he should play a fairly prominent role in the team this coming season....

as for Crawford, I dunno, nothing is on the cards....probably mentioned it because it is always close to reality....will have to see how he fits in with the team I guess....

no promises if it will or not, it will be what it will be....I'll use the all Canadian Club motto "Similar yet Different"

checked my PM's, I'll see what I can do about it if I get time after tennis tonight....

as I said before, I really like Q too, I was a huge fan of his at DePaul when he was a double-double guy (20-10) at SF....Ariza is part of the reason he is not starting at this time....

Very good and detailed about Knicks roster. I like what I saw and I wish you goodluck on your first game. If possible, can you play more minutes on Penny pls?

Larry Brown doesn't think that rookie is proven anything yet, and those Penny rumours are just that, rumours....he'll probably see more PT under Brown, but not start I'd say....

at this time I believe Nate is not ready for a starting spot and will be more effective as an impact player off the bench....

not bad, but Frye won't start the season in the middle....

true, more thoughts to consider

well it looks like he will start the season on the IR....there is a logjam but I'd like to see him play a little bit more as well....

thaKEAF wrote:Are you gonna put Curry on the Knicks?

argghh, I started the dynasty thinking that Isiah had gone off Curry, but it doesn't surprise me that he is a Knick now....I dunno, because I still haven't played my 1st game I can still pull off that trade....

the pros of the deal is that:
- Knicks' 05/06 roster is essentially the same as mine
- I have a new starting C
-opens up more PT at SF for Q and Ariza and vets like Houston and Penny should get more burn....
- J.D! took over as GM in my dynasty as of the 2nd week of October. Real-life trade was in 1st week of October

the cons of the deal is that:
- The dynasty has begun so I should just go with the rosters that I begun with and work my own scenarios

I will let the public help influence my decision as I do not mind either situation....what does everyone think? I need to make a decision tonight so let me know your thoughts....

cheers
