Milwaukee Bucks (1-5) vs Denver Nuggets (3-2)

Anthony Gives Bucks a Beating (89-77 Nuggets*)

Nuggets Boxscore
Bucks Boxscore

Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets always seem to save the best for last. Carmelo hit 8 of his 16 shot attempts and provided 8 of his 17 points down the stretch as Denver kicked the tar out of Milwaukee in the fourth quarter. Kenyon Martin followed Anthony closely with another 15 point 9 rebound performance, but shot only 5 of 16 from the field. Marcus Camby and Nene, each got their first double-double of the season by scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Voshon Lenard also made is starting lineup debut, and scored 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting while playing tight defence on Michael Redd.

Milwaukee has slumped to 1-6 and are now on a 4 game losing streak. Desmond Mason had an explosive night scoring the basketball; he had a game high 34 points and shot an incredible 15 of 25 from the field. Michael Redd on the other hand, had a terrible time shooting the ball and only made 4 of 14 shots. Bucks point guard Maurice Williams had 15 points and 10 assists, but also shot the ball terribly (6 of 16).

The Bucks shot 66% in the first quarter and were absolutely sizzling from the field, mainly because Desmond Mason already had 14 points by the end of the first quarter. The Bucks led 22-11 at the five minute mark of the first quarter, but it was the largest lead they would ever have in the game. A 9-0 sparked by a Voshon Lenard 3 pointer would easily erase that deficit and the Bucks and Nuggets would fight an up and down battle soon afterwards. Denver would eventually take a two point lead by halftime, but Carmelo Anthony was shooting the ball quite poorly (4 of 11) and was playing poor defence on Mason.

Milwaukee shot extremely poorly in the second half of the game and their offence took a huge nosedive. Denver took advantage of this and pulled away in the third quarter with a 7-0 run. The Nuggets outscored Milwaukee 19-10 in the final quarter and held the Bucks to only 19% shooting. Desmond Mason and Michael Redd were also held scoreless during the fourth quarter, and the Bucks' struggled mightily as a result.

"We were focusing a lot more on trying to stop Michael Redd and Desmond Mason in the fourth quarter," said Kenyon Martin. "Our defence was terrible in the first half, but we really turned it around and we gave them a big suprise."

Thanks.

I was very close to giving Andre Miller and Melo an A, but they didn't really deserve it.

That's a great idea with the report and it works very well.

Thanks, I just wanted to do something different for a change.

Yeah, I don't know why, but I can't seem to play defence with Carmelo.

Great win!

Thanks

I knew I forgot something  . Thanks for pointing that out. I was quite shocked to find out that Redd was held to 14 points by Lenard as well. Maybe he wants to keep his starting job.

Martin Works His Late-Game Magic Against the Wizards (93-88 Nuggets*)

Nuggets Boxscore
Wizards Boxscore

Although key players like Marcus Camby, Voshon Lenard and Andre Miller failed to produce big numbers, Kenyon Martin, Dermarr Johnson and Earl Boykins easily stepped it up and took their place. Miller, Camby and Lenard shot a combined 4 of 18 from the field, but Martin made 12 of his 20 shots to score a game-high 26 points and also finished with 11 rebounds. Carmelo Anthony also added 20 points and 7 rebounds, but made only 6 of 17 shots. After struggling the last few games, Earl Boykins finally stepped it up to deliver 13 points and 4 assists. Dermarr Johnson, who was recently beat out of the lineup by Voshon Lenard, gave a 15 point, 4 rebound 3 assist effort.

"I was in the zone," said Kenyon Martin. "It was one of those games were you barely missed a shot, no matter where you shot the ball, it would almost always go in. It felt good, especially in the fourth quarter and the game was on the line. I knew I could still step it up and hit those big shots."

The Washington Wizards got most of their scoring done from their big three of Antawn Jamison, Larry Hughes, and Gilbert Arenas. Jamison led the Wizards with 21 points, and was followed closely behind by Larry Hughes and Gilbert Arenas, who scored 18 and 16 points respectively, but both guards shot a lackadaisical 35%. Reserve point guard Steve Blake also suprised a few people by scoring 10 points off the bench.

"We just didn't get it done in crunch time," said Arenas. "Martin made shots that he shouldn't have made if we played tighter defence, and we made some poor decisions in the final minutes of the game. Our execution was terrible."

The game started off with some flashy point guard play from both Arenas and Andre Miller. Both guards made some spectacular passes to Antawn Jamison and Kenyon Martin, and both Jamison and Martin had 8 points after the first quarter. The only difference was that the Wizards shot 35% and the Nuggets shot 50%, so obviously Denver managed to take a 24-19 lead after the first quarter. It was the Nugget's turn to get cold in the second quarter though, as they missed seven consecutive shots and shot 38%. Washington managed to capitalize and had a 50-46 halftime lead. Back-up point guards Steve Blake and Earl Boykins each scored 8 points in the second quarter for their respective teams.

The Wizards knocked down a few shots to start the third quarter, but an 8-0 run started by a Dermarr Johnson dunk easily erased any deficit, and it was an intense dogfight for both teams afterwards (both teams did not shoot over 40%). The Nuggets finally managed to take a 73-72 lead, but there was plenty of time for the Wizards to mount a comeback. Kenyon Martin then scored 5 straight baskets for the Nuggets and the Nuggets had a small 83-78 advantage. Washington and Denver would exchange points there after, but Denver kept the lead intact.

Steve Blake knocked down some deep three point shots in the second quarter.

Denver Deals For Daniels From Dallas

ImageImage FOR ImageImage

The Denver Nuggets have announced today that they have successfully completed their very first transaction of the season by sending veteran guards Voshon Lenard and Greg Buckner to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Marquis Daniels and Didier Ilunga-Mbenga. Coincidentally, the Denver Nuggets will be travelling to Dallas to play the Mavericks on their home court in a few days, so Daniels will be playing his first game as a Nugget against his former team.

"We've gotten a lot younger and more versatile with this trade," said Denver Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe. "Daniels is a young, hard working player on both ends of the court. He's got great size for a guard at 6'6, and he also has an underrated ability to make quick decisions with the ball, so he can play the one, two and three, which is something that Voshon couldn't really do. We also got Ilunga-Mbenga, who is a young center and is great insurance in case one of our big men go down. We also wish the best of luck to Voshon and Greg, and we hope that they will continue their successful NBA careers."

Daniels made it to the all-rookie second team last year when he averaged 8.5 points per game, 2.6 rebounds per game and 2.1 assists while shooting 49% from the field in 56 games games last year. Marquis played in Auburn before signing with Dallas before the 2003-2004 season. Daniels did not recieve a good amount of playing time until the end of the season, but he blew many people away with his talent. Daniels scored 30 or more points in just 15 starts, and he suddenly became one of the most sought after free agents in the market. Daniels opted to stay in Dallas though, and he was rewarded with a 6 year $38 million contract. Daniels' was happy to be a Maverick again, but he has only been averaging 11 minutes a game and 4.8 points per game this season.

"I was very commited to playing for Dallas, but they weren't giving me any playing time this season," says Marquis Daniels on an interview through the phone. "I was grateful to be a Maverick ever since they let me show my talents, that's why I wanted to re-sign with them. But Denver is my new home now, and from the looks of it, I'll be in a winning situation and I'll be getting the minutes that I deserve as well, so I'm happy to be part of my new team."

Voshon Lenard is a 10 year veteran and has also been on the Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors. This was his fourth season donning the Denver uniform, and he had one of his best seasons last year when he averaged 14.2 points per game and 3.4 rebounds. Lenard also won the three point competition that year and shot 36% from beyond the arc last season. This season Voshon averaged 7.6 points per game, his lowest average since his injury plagued 98-98 season. Lenard recently started showing signs of getting back into old form the past few games, but struggled against Washington with only 4 points. Lenard was also beat out of the starting lineup earlier this season by Dermarr Johnson.

Greg Buckner was a defensive specialist did not play a single game this season. Buckner should feel right at home in Dallas because he was drafted 53rd overall by the Mavericks in the 1998 draft and spent his first three years playing there. Greg later spent two other seasons with Philadelphia before signing with Denver.

I can't say really because I don't know Daniels too well. But Lenard would have cost you points defensively and Buckner can't score so hopefully Daniels will be able to do both.

Daniels is the shit. He plays small foward, shooting guard and point guard, can shoot the ball effectively from mid-range and is also a pretty athletic player. Easily one of my new favourite players. The only weakness for him is probably is his inconsistent three point shooting.

Good trade and nice win against the Wizards.

Thanks.

Updates are coming tomorrow. I'm a lazy bitch right now.

Lenard Teaches Old Team a Lesson (100-86 Mavericks*)

Nuggets Boxscore
Mavericks Boxscore

Voshon Lenard must have been pretty upset at his old team for being traded to Dallas. Lenard led the game with 24 points and was instrumental in the Maverick's blowout win. Michael Finely also had 23 points and 6 rebounds. Maverick leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki was held to only 13 points and 5 of 13 shooting. Sixth man Jerry Stackhouse and point guard Jason Terry both scored 11 points, but Terry also had 9 assists.

"I just wanted Denver to know that they were missing out on something by trading me," said Lenard. "It was fun playing against my former team in my very first game with my new one, and I don't have anything against Denver, but I don't like the fact that they traded me. I felt like I was at home in Denver."

Denver traded Lenard for Marquis Daniels, who made his debut as the starting shooting guard. Daniels got huge cheers from the fans during his introduction in the starting lineup; even though he has only been a Maverick for barely a season. Daniels failed to live up to expectations though, as he only scored 8 points on 4 of 11 shooting. Kenyon Martin and Andre Miller both had 16 points apiece to pace the Nuggets in scoring, but Martin only shot 7 of 20 from the field and Carmelo Anthony finished with only 14 points.

"He (Daniels) obviously wasn't used to our system, especially on defence," said Marcus Camby, who finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. "Marquis is a very good player, all of us can tell. But he just needs some practice time and get used to us. The trade only happened a few days ago and we weren't really prepared for this."

Denver started the game off with a 6-0 run in the first few minutes of the first quarter, but Voshon Lenard threw a wrench in the Nuggets plans as he scored on three consecutive three pointers to give the Mavericks the lead. Lenard finished with 12 points after the first quarter was over, and all of them were from three pointers. Both teams continued their run and gun play in the second quarter, but Denver fell cold and an easy run by Dallas gave them a double-digit 47-35 lead. The Nuggets shot 31% during the second quarter and the Mavericks led 55-43 by halftime.

The Nuggets slowly, but quietly whittled away at the lead in the third quarter afterwards. The lead was cut down by three Wesley Person free throws and Marquis Daniels finished with a slam dunk to cut the lead down to 70-65. Michael Finely then reeled off 5 straight points and the Mavericks went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter. The Nuggets would struggle in the fourth quarter and could not pull the lead down to single digits again.
