Denver Deals For Daniels From Dallas

FOR
The Denver Nuggets have announced today that they have successfully completed their very first transaction of the season by sending veteran guards Voshon Lenard and Greg Buckner to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Marquis Daniels and Didier Ilunga-Mbenga. Coincidentally, the Denver Nuggets will be travelling to Dallas to play the Mavericks on their home court in a few days, so Daniels will be playing his first game as a Nugget against his former team.
"We've gotten a lot younger and more versatile with this trade," said Denver Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe. "Daniels is a young, hard working player on both ends of the court. He's got great size for a guard at 6'6, and he also has an underrated ability to make quick decisions with the ball, so he can play the one, two and three, which is something that Voshon couldn't really do. We also got Ilunga-Mbenga, who is a young center and is great insurance in case one of our big men go down. We also wish the best of luck to Voshon and Greg, and we hope that they will continue their successful NBA careers."
Daniels made it to the all-rookie second team last year when he averaged 8.5 points per game, 2.6 rebounds per game and 2.1 assists while shooting 49% from the field in 56 games games last year. Marquis played in Auburn before signing with Dallas before the 2003-2004 season. Daniels did not recieve a good amount of playing time until the end of the season, but he blew many people away with his talent. Daniels scored 30 or more points in just 15 starts, and he suddenly became one of the most sought after free agents in the market. Daniels opted to stay in Dallas though, and he was rewarded with a 6 year $38 million contract. Daniels' was happy to be a Maverick again, but he has only been averaging 11 minutes a game and 4.8 points per game this season.
"I was very commited to playing for Dallas, but they weren't giving me any playing time this season," says Marquis Daniels on an interview through the phone. "I was grateful to be a Maverick ever since they let me show my talents, that's why I wanted to re-sign with them. But Denver is my new home now, and from the looks of it, I'll be in a winning situation and I'll be getting the minutes that I deserve as well, so I'm happy to be part of my new team."
Voshon Lenard is a 10 year veteran and has also been on the Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors. This was his fourth season donning the Denver uniform, and he had one of his best seasons last year when he averaged 14.2 points per game and 3.4 rebounds. Lenard also won the three point competition that year and shot 36% from beyond the arc last season. This season Voshon averaged 7.6 points per game, his lowest average since his injury plagued 98-98 season. Lenard recently started showing signs of getting back into old form the past few games, but struggled against Washington with only 4 points. Lenard was also beat out of the starting lineup earlier this season by Dermarr Johnson.
Greg Buckner was a defensive specialist did not play a single game this season. Buckner should feel right at home in Dallas because he was drafted 53rd overall by the Mavericks in the 1998 draft and spent his first three years playing there. Greg later spent two other seasons with Philadelphia before signing with Denver.

Well, What do ya think?
