Game 13: Milwaukee Bucks (8-4) @ New York Knicks (4-5)

NY 94, MIL 90

Wade Struggles, Bucks Lose- Milwaukee Shows Over-Dependence on Wade’s Scoring

NEW YORK, NEW YORK- By his standards, Dwyane Wade had an off game last night at Madison Square Garden versus the Milwaukee Bucks. He had 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists, but shot just 6-for-16 in the game and was 0-for-5 in the fourth quarter. It became obvious to everyone in attendance that without Wade scoring, the Bucks as a team found it really hard to score out there.
 The Knicks took advantage of this fact in the fourth quarter, shooting 58.4% to score 27 points, while holding Milwaukee to a dismal 21.7% shooting effort en route to garnering 15 points in the period. An 8-point Bucks lead at the end of the 3rd turned into a 4-point loss, and the Bucks saw their record slip to 8-5 on the season while New York evened their record to 5-5.
:arrow:Dwight Howard was the only one who gave us consistent production tonight, along with Vlade off the bench,” Bucks coach Terry Porter remarked. “I didn’t like to see how dependent we were on Dwyane having to score the basketball. He’s not going to score 30 every night, and really, he shouldn’t have to. Other guys need to step it up.”
 Howard had an excellent game of 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots, and teamed with Dan Gadzuric’s monster 16-rebound night to help the Bucks control the boards 48-to-35 over the Knicks. But a well-rounded Knicks attack that saw 6 players score in double figures overcame it all. Allan Houston came off the bench to score 14 points, and Stephon Marbury’s 17 points and 9 assists led the starters. Rookie Channing Frye also played really well with 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting, with 12 rebounds.

GAME NOTES
Although reserve Eddie Jones has struggled with his shot lately, it’s still been better than Trenton Hassell, who has been consistently inconsistent offensively. There’s a good chance that the veteran could replace the defensive stopper Hassell in the starting lineup soon, or that Hassell could even be traded.

Commentary: Hassell just wasn't getting it done offensively, averaging less than 5 point per game despite being a starter. The acquisition of Eddie Jones made him expendable. Jones is not quite as good of a defender as Hassell, although still very good, but is a much better offensive player. Also, the loss of Antonio McDyess in the Dwyane Wade trade left the Bucks without much interior scoring off the bench, which is what the "Tractor" does best. :D We'll see how it works out...

Game #14: Atlanta Hawks (2-7) @ Milwaukee Bucks (8-5)

MIL 84, ATL 81

Ugly Game Goes to Bucks- Scrappy Hawks Take Milwaukee to the Limit

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN- Despite their lowly record of 2-7 so far this season, the Atlanta Hawks gave the Milwaukee Bucks all they could handle in last night’s game at the Bradley Center in downtown Milwaukee. They played scrappy, desperation-type basketball, as if the entire game was the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter.
 It worked very well for 3 quarters, too- Atlanta led 67-62 at that point and scored the first basket of the 4th quarter to hold on to a 7 point lead. However, they would only hit 4 more baskets the rest of the way, as their offense came apart and sent them home with the loss, 84-81. The Hawks shot an unbelievably bad field goal percentage of 18.5% in the fourth, hitting just 5 of their 27 field goal attempts  . Number 1 overall pick Andrew Bogut spoiled the good game he had going with a 1-for-10 shooting effort in the period, and his teammates weren’t much better.
 The Bucks still had to fight tooth and nail to pull out the victory, though. Eddie Jones found Dwyane Wade for a breakaway dunk with 33.9 seconds left that put Milwaukee ahead 81-79 8-) . Atlanta tied up the game on 2 free throws from Salim Stoudamire on their next possession, but this time Jones did the scoring himself, cutting through the lane for a dunk, plus a foul. He converted the free throw, and the Bucks led 84-81 with 22.4 seconds left. That would be the final score of the ballgame, though, as Stoudamire missed a 3-pointer and the Bucks controlled the rebound and avoided being fouled.
A win’s a win,” Bucks coach Terry Porter philosophized. “These are the types of wins that cause you to lose sleep and pull out your hair, but it’s definitely better than a loss."
With the victory, the Bucks improved their record to 9-5.

GAME NOTES
In his first game as a starter with the Bucks, due to the Trenton Hassell trade, Eddie Jones had mixed results. He struggled with his shot (4-for-14), but had the key 3-point play at the end that sealed the game. He filled up the stat-sheet, too, with 6 rebounds and 7 assists.

Newly acquired Robert “Tractor” Traylor played well in a reserve role, recording 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Game 15: Milwaukee Bucks (9-5) @ Charlotte Bobcats (1-8)

MIL 110, CHA 105 (O.T.)

Bucks Pull It Out In O.T.- Dwayne Wade Trumps Great Game from Raymond Felton

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA- For the second straight game, the Milwaukee Bucks played a team whose record would suggest the contest would easily be won by the Bucks. But for the second straight game, it took a mammoth effort to pull out a win.
 They played in Charlotte against the 1-8 Bobcats last night, who were led by rookie PG sensation Raymond Felton. Felton’s averaging about 20 ppg and 5 apg so far, and is a leading contender for the Rookie of the Year award. His play backed all it all up- Felton had an outstanding 26-point, 11-assist effort  and almost single-handedly gave the Bobcats the victory.
 He was consistent throughout the match, but in the late stages of the fourth quarter, he stepped up his game another notch. After Bucks PF Dwight Howard hit a short 2-pointer to give the Bucks a 1-point, 93-92 lead with 1:00 left, Felton didn’t hesitate as he knocked down a 3-pointer 7 seconds later. That put Charlotte up 95-93.
 But the Bucks had their own answer in Dwyane Wade. “Flash” had been held to a very quiet first 3 quarters by the tough defense of Bobcats SG Keith Bogans, scoring just 6 points going into the fourth quarter. “I was letting my team down, and felt that I had to step it up,” he later remarked. Step it up he did, netting 15 fourth-quarter points :proud: , the last two of which were the answer to Felton’s above-mentioned 3-pointer and tied the ballgame at 95-all. Neither team managed to score in the remaining 45 seconds, or both executed defensive stops, however you want to look at it. The fans were treated to some free basketball- the game went into overtime.
 The Bucks hero in O.T. was veteran Eddie Jones, who broke out of a shooting slump to score 26 points on 11-19 shooting, including a 4-for-5 display in the fourth quarter. Jones connected on a long 2-point jumper from the corner with 1:16 to play to give the Bucks a 105-102 lead. The Bucks got a stop, and then PG Nate Robinson managed to get penetration into the lane, collapse the defense, and kicked it back out to Jones for a straight-away 3 pointer that was nothing but net: 108-102 Bucks. That was immediately answered by Felton hitting another of his 3 pointers, his second of the overtime and 4th of the game. But the Bucks executed soundly and shut down the ‘Cats from then-on, and Jones’ layup with 0.3 seconds to play sealed the nerve-racking win for Milwaukee.

GAME NOTES
Wade barely missed a triple-double in the game, recording 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 10 assists. He even added 4 blocked shots and 2 steals, and held Bogans to a 5-for-19 shooting night. Bucks coach Terry Porter exclaimed, “In my opinion, he’s the MVP of the league right now. The numbers he’s putting up are incredible, mind-boggling. And Felton, wow…that’s a no-brainer for Rookie of the Year. He played great tonight.

now that half the season is in the books, it's time for the...

AFTER 15 GAMES REPORT
-for players averaging at least 5 minutes per game

Bowen, Ryan: 3.7 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 0.2 apg, 0.2 spg, 0.6 bpg, 36.4% FGs, 33.3% 3FGs, 69.2% FTs
Ryan has played backup small forward and power forward this season for the Bucks, and has done a pretty good job. His defense and rebounding have been very good, but he’s struggled with his shot. He’s surprised with his 3-point touch, though, tying for the team lead in percentage. Overall, he’s a solid asset and versatile role player who fits in well with the team.

Divac, Vlade: 5.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 0.6 apg, 0.4 spg, 0.6 bpg, 44.0% FGs, 0% 3FGs, 87.5% FTs
The veteran’s creaky knees are holding up well. Vlade’s played backup center all year long, and has had 3 double-digit scoring performances so far. He’s also been a consistent rebounder, and shoots a solid free throw percentage. Everything about Divac is just solid, he’s an excellent backup big man to have on the Bucks.

Gadzuric, Dan: 3.6 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.1 spg, 1.8 bpg, 41.0% FGs, 0% 3FGs, 36.4% FTs
After Calvin Booth was traded in the offseason, Gadzuric stepped into the full-time starting center role for this season. He’s responded well with almost 9 rebounds and 2 blocks per game. He’s almost invisible on offense, but as a defensive center, he’s above average. Gadzuric has 6 double-digit rebounding games so far, including a 16-rebound exhibition against the Knicks.

Howard, Dwight: 20.7 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.7 spg, 3.1 bpg, 51.2% FGs, 0% 3FGs, 89.5% FTs
After enduring some rookie pains last season, Dwight has stepped up his game to All-Star level already. His field goal percentage is very good at over 51%, and he’s averaging over 20 points and 9 rebounds. Howard has also been a monster on the defensive end, leading the team with 3.1 blocks per game. He has 6 double-doubles on the year, including a 26-point, 15-rebound gem versus the Memphis Grizzlies.

Jones, Eddie: 11.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.0 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.5 bpg, 37.4% FGs, 33.3% 3FGs, 85.7% FTs
Eddie’s played just 8 games so far for the Bucks. He hasn’t shot the ball well, although his last game seemed to be a breakout game for him with 26 points on 11-for-19 shooting. The Bucks need more games like that from him if they are to go very far this season. Additionally, Jones’ defense has been superb, and he’s putting up solid rebounding and assists numbers. His play made Bucks management ok with trading Trenton Hassell, so they could pick up the “Tractor,” Robert Traylor.

Langdon, Trajan: 5.4 ppg, 1.2 rpg, 1.1 apg, 0.4 spg, 0.1 bpg, 36.3% FGs, 33.3% 3FGs, 100% FTs
Trajan has been a disappointment so far. His shooting percentage is very poor for someone who’s reputation is that he’s only a shooter. He had one monster effort, a 27 point game versus the Hornets in which he hit 5 threes. Milwaukee management doesn’t expect games like that from Langdon, but hope that his production and consistency rise a lot in the second half of the season.

Robinson, Nate: 10.2 ppg, 5.3 apg, 1.1 rpg, 1.3 spg, 0.1 bpg, 49.2% FGs, 30.3% 3FGs, 96.2% FTs
Nate has become a fan, coach, and management-favorite player in this his rookie season in the league. He’s dynamic & explosive, and puts up great numbers of 10 ppg and 5 apg with almost 50% shooting despite his small 5’9” frame. His electric play means that he leads the team in turnovers per game with over 3, but also puts fans in the seats and the team on Sportscenter every time he dunks on someone. He’s had 8 double-digit scoring efforts to date, and his best statistical game was a 20-point, 7-assist night against the San Antonio Spurs (although he did have 8 turnovers in the game!)

Traylor, Robert: 6.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.5 bpg, 46.2% FGs (No 3FGs or FTs Attempted)
“Tractor” has played in just 2 games so far with the Bucks, and has grabbed 6 boards and scored 6 points in each of them. Those kinds of numbers are just what are needed from the big fella off the bench.

Udrih, Beno: 7.3 ppg, 0.7 rpg, 5.3 apg, 1.8 spg, 0.3 bpg, 36.5% FGs, 31.1% 3FGs, 84.6% FTs
Beno has had a very up-and-down season thus far. He’s started 12 of the first 15 games, but has yet to find a rhythm with his shot. His best scoring outing was when he scored 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting (3-for-4 from downtown) against the Hornets, and his season-high assist game of 16 came recently against Houston. Hopefully Beno can find a rhythm and be a more consistent contributor in the second half of the season for the Bucks. He’s got a lot of potential.

Wade, Dwyane: 28.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 5.6 apg, 2.3 spg, 2.1 bpg, 57.5% FGs, 25% 3FGs, 92.3% FTs
The price of Jason Terry, Desmond Mason, and Antonio McDyess was steep, but it’s now looking like there’s no doubt that the Bucks made a great trade in obtaining Dwyane Wade from the Miami Heat in that blockbuster deal. In 8 games, Wade has put up MVP-caliber numbers across the board. 28 points, almost 6 rebounds, more than 5 assists, and over 2 steals and 2 blocks a game? Shooting a Shaq-like 57.5% from the field? The Bucks know they have a player in “Flash” who can lead them through the playoffs against any team, and have a realistic chance at winning. Wade’s highlights this season include a 56-point explosion against the Rockets, a 6-block effort against Seattle, and just missing a triple double against the Bobcats with a 25-point, 9-rebound, 10-assist game. He’s the leader; let’s see how far he can take these Milwaukee Bucks in the second half of the season.

Nice win against the Bobcats. I was very disapointed in Sean May's effort. And your report looks great. Keep up the good work. (Y)

Game 16: Milwaukee Bucks (10-5) @ Miami Heat (7-4)

MIA 98, MIL 86

Ex-Mates Handle Bucks- Terry, Mason, McDyess Combo Trump Wade, Jones

MIAMI, FLORIDA- Although the Milwaukee Bucks will never say it, the Miami Heat believe that they got the best of the major 6-player trade between the teams earlier this season that sent Dwyane Wade, Eddie Jones, and Qyntel Woods to the Bucks for Jason Terry, Desmond Mason, and Antonio McDyess. While the true winner of the deal may be a subjective argument, the Heat provided some evidence for their case in a 98-86 pounding of the Bucks last night in Miami. It was the first meeting of these teams since the trade, but most likely not the last, as both appear headed to the playoffs.
 The Heat improved their record to 8-4 on the season with a combination of great defensive intensity and a well rounded offensive attack centered around their mammoth center, Shaquille O’Neal. “Shaq” pounded in 23 points and 11 rebounds in the game, establishing the paint as his territory.
 All three former Bucks contributed nicely in helping down their former team: Jason Terry had a low field goal percentage with a 7-for-21 overall shooting night, but canned 3 of 4 threes and played excellent defense in holding Wade to just 12 points on 5-for-13 shooting. Reserve big man Antonio McDyess helped carry the Heat in the second quarter and scored 7 points with 3 rebounds in the game. And finally, Desmond Mason was simply spectacular, scoring 18 points with 8 rebounds. He made the play of the day, and maybe the best of the season in the NBA so far, when he rebounded a Terry miss backwards in the air, brought the ball down to his waist, and then threw down a reverse jam that sent the crowd into a frenzy  .
:arrow:That Mason follow was unreal,” Bucks Head Coach Terry Porter admitted after the game.
 All of these solid Miami efforts were too much for the Bucks in the game. Coach Porter had started supersub Nate Robinson over Beno Udrih in hopes of upping the tempo, but Robinson stuggled mightily in the game. He was 0-for-10 from the field, including 0-for-6 from downtown, in what was by far his worst shooting effort of the year. And it was yet another game of bad shooting from Trajan Langdon, who’s 4-12 performance has him rumored to be traded possibly before the next game versus Phoenix. Landgon simply hasn’t shot well the entire year.
 The Bucks’ acquisitions from the blockbuster trade were very quiet against their former ballclub. As mentioned already, Wade made just 12 points, and shot only 1 field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. Eddie Jones had 11 points on 4-for-10 shooting, and was outplayed by Mason from start to finish in the ballgame.
 As a team, Milwaukee was held to 32 points in the entire second half, shooting a dismal 36.4% in the third quarter and atrocious 23.8%  in the fourth. They committed 17 turnovers in the game, more than triple Miami’s number of 5 :shake: . Wade himself had 7 turnovers, a rarity that summed up Miami’s dominance in the game.
 If they Bucks are to get through this Miami team should they meet them in the playoffs, they’re going to need a much better effort collectively and individually. And Wade’s got to be the leader all the way. He’s definitely up for the challenge: “Write it down- that’s the last time I’m a non-factor in the fourth quarter. For better or for worse, I’ve GOT to be there for my team every time. No excuses, no exceptions. And I can’t wait to play these guys [the Heat] again…

GAME NOTES
Infamous for being a lousy free throw shooter, O’Neal made 7 of his 10 attempts versus Milwaukee. “Amazing touch for a diesel truck,” he joked.

NEWEST NBA TRANSACTIONS/NOTES

1/9/01.....The Orlando Magic trade Pat Garrity to the Los Angeles Lakers for Stanislav Medvedenko.

1/13/01.....The Washington Wizards trade Jared Jeffries to the Los Angeles Clippers for Chris Wilcox.

1/14/01.....Tracy McGrady was named the NBA's Player of the Week, and Andrew Bogut was the Rookie of the Week.

1/20/01.....The Milwaukee Bucks trade Trajan Langdon to the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for Kareem Rush and Melvin Ely.

ImageKareem Rush- deadly 3-point shooter, I hope!

ImageMelvin Ely- solid low post scorer

Commentary: Langdon has great shooting ratings (87 FG and 91 3PT), but for some reason, couldn't hit anything for the Bucks. His field goal percentage is in the 30%-40% area. The Bobcats are hoping he realizes his shooting potential for their team, while I hope that Kareem Rush can become the outside threat that my team needs. And Ely is a good low post scorer, too, who might turn into a surprise.

Game 17: Phoenix Suns (11-2) @ Milwaukee Bucks (10-6)

PHO 110, MIL 108

Suns Steal Win Late- Bucks Waste Early Lead, Howard Explosion in Loss

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN- The Milwaukee Bucks hosted the best team in the NBA last night at the Bradley Center: the 11-2 Phoenix Suns. They showed no signs of intimidation, however, jumping out to an early 14 point lead when they led 24-10 midway through the first quarter. Dwight Howard stormed out of the opening gates, firing in 5 of his 7 first quarter field goal attempts for 13 points, and starting PG Nate Robinson contributed 8 points and 6 assists in the period. The Bucks had an ideal start to their game with a 31-20 lead.
 However, While Howard stayed hot for the Bucks throughout the game, the Suns got even hotter. Phoenix shot 62% in the second quarter and scored 33 points while being led by the devastating combination of Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire. It didn’t take long for them to completely erase Milwaukee’s lead and take a 4-point one of their own by the end of the first half, up 53-49.
 The Bucks fought back in the 3rd, going to Howard primarily because he was so hot. Dwight scored 15 more points in the quarter to raise his total to 34 in the game :) . Eddie Jones knocked down a few jumpers, too. But Stoudemire kept on coming, and Shawn Marion hit 5 of 10 attempts in the 3rd to help the Suns stay in the game. Heading into the fourth and final quarter, Milwaukee led by the slimmest of margins, 82-81.
 Milwaukee’s best player, Dwyane Wade, had been very quiet up to that point with just 6 points, but scored 12 in the fourth. He and Howard, who scored 10 more points to finish with a season-high 44 :D , scored all but 4 of the Bucks points in the quarter. But they couldn’t get any help, and Phoenix stormed back from a 94-86 deficit with 7:00 left. They made a frantic finish led by Nash, Marion and Stoudemire in particular.
 In the final 30 seconds, with the Bucks clinging to a 2-point lead, Nash sprinted down the court, stopped and popped a 20-foot jumper in from the top of the key to tie the ballgame at 108. The Bucks missed on their next possession, and then Nash attacked the heart of the Bucks defense with under 10 seconds to play. He drew a foul on a shot, and so stepped up to the free throw line. He’s an excellent free throw shooter, and a very clutch player, so it was no surprise that he swished in both shots. :x
 The Bucks were left with 4 seconds on the clock and a 2-point deficit. They called timeout to advance the ball to midcourt, then gave it to Wade to work his magic. Dwyane drove into the lane hard, manufactured an angle to get off a short fadeaway jumper, but missed the shot. The happy Suns walked off the court with a 12-2 record, still the best in the business.

GAME NOTES
Bucks coach Terry Porter expressed his frustrations with the team and their efforts afterwards. “I’ve said it all year- we need other guys to step up on this team. Dwight and Dwyane can’t do it all, and that just becomes painfully obvious against such dangerous teams as Miami last game and now Phoenix. I mean, what would the score have been if Dwight had his normal 20 points, instead of 44? Are we going to lose by 20 without monster efforts by these guys? Each and every game, I want to see a few players step it up and be major contributors and factors. That’s when we’re at our best- playing as a team.

Two tough losses. Your old players burned you in the Heat game, but Howard gave a great effort in your second loss to the Suns. They're tough teams, the good thing is you saw a lot of great things for some of your players. Good luck next game. (Y)
