Celtics Pull Off Close Win
Kobe scores 42, Paul Pierce had the final laugh
ABOVE: Paul Pierce (34) hurt the Lakers down the stretch, scoring the Celtics’ final 7 points of the match
27 Nov, Los Angeles – Paul Pirece, ‘self-proclaimed number one shooting guard in the league’ took on Kobe Bryant, ‘the number shooting guard in the league’ last night. The lead up to the match was hyped up by Paul Pierce’s claims to being a superior player to Bryant.
Pierce came out in the media a third time, two days ago stating, “Kobe Bryant is just scared of me. That’s why he’s not talking back.” Bryant who said he had had enough of ‘Pierce’s clowning around,’ made a statement to ESPN, “Paul is really getting on my nerves right now but I won’t let him get to me. We will have to wait till we play each other to find out who’s indeed better.”
Bryant entered the match averaging 34.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 7.2 apg and 2.4 spg. Bryant came out of the loss with 42 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals however, his inability to hold onto the ball and make decisive choices forced him into 12 turnovers. “I’m really disappointed in myself after tonight,” Bryant stated, “If I turned the ball over a little less, we would have won. There’s no doubt about it.”
Pierce shot the exact same amount of shots as his Lakers counterpart but scored 26 and grabbed 5 rebounds. The difference was Bryant’s ability to get to the free throw line but Pierce was money and rock solid in the most important part of the game. Pierce boasted, “I play a team game and I only step up when the team needs me. You saw Kobe tonight; he forced too many shots and wore himself out. That’s why I am better.” Pierce scored the Celtics last 7 points of the game and his two baskets in the final minute of the game repeatedly held the home team down. Pierce came into the contest with averages of 21 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 4.4 apg, 2.2 spg and 1.2 bpg.
Bryant conceded to his team losing but didn’t concede to being inferior to Pierce. “You are not anywhere enear me in terms of skill,” Bryant shot back at all of Pierce’s past claims, “I can make the All-defensive team and I will show you all.” Pierce diagreed and said, “The day that Bryant wins a MVP or takes the Lakers to the NBA Finals, now that will be the day I retire from basketball.”
Phil Jackson wasn’t impressed with the two superstar’s overdramatic war of words. “I thought both guys learnt their lessons. Pierce and Kobe have both had controversy in their careers, I thought they’d know better than to start it themselves.” Jackson added, “All of the talk really takes fans away from the reality of what is really going on.”
Jax’s prime example in this situation was his newly trusted play maker, Lamar Odom. Odom had a triple double of 23, 15 and 10 as he helped the Lakers on both ends of the floor. “Lamar’s play tonight really reminded me of the Windy City. Scottie’s apprentice is sort of becoming something. Maybe he will become the teacher soon!”
Odom’s play was overshadowed by Bryant and Pierce’s bickering but the Celtics’ accusation of the Lakers for foul play certainly wasn’t.
The Celtics accused the Lakers of cheating as Ricky Davis was sent to the dressing rooms with less than half a period left in the game after sustaining several hard hits from the opposition. Davis who had been hurt before earlier in the game was bullied around on the court after Tyronn Lue claimed the Celtics’ SF had pushed him when he got injured in the final quarter.
Lue recalled, “I went up for a lay up and Davis came out of nowhere and hit me in the back. That’s when I fell on my elbow and I couldn’t play on.” Davis said the accusation wasn’t true, “Lue is lying so that he can cover up the cheap play of the Lakers. They hit me a lot and that’s why I have a knee injury now.” Fortunately, both players were diagnosed with only minor injuries.
NBA Commissioner David Stern said that the league would look further into the case.
The match was tight from the start to the end. In the first quarter, Davis hit back to back treys to get the Celtics ahead 8-0 but LA kept it close throughout thanks to Odom. Boston immediately played up a few gears and seemed to have put LA behind them but the home side rallied behind Bryant’s 22 points, including a stretch where Bryant scored 14 straight to pull the game back to a tied game. The Lakers entered the second half ahead by one point.
Both teams matched each other basket for basket ion the third and the Lakers failed to capitalize on Davis’ injury in the third quarter. Once Davis returned to the lineup in the fourth, the Celtics pushed ahead and after banking on a 10-0 run, the Lakers once again trailed in the match.
The home side was lucky to have Tyronn Lue on the court as the little warrior kept the team in the game with three uncontested lay ups and those baskets kept Boston from pushing their advantage up to 20. Lue left the game with a bruised elbow and the dynamic duo of Bryant and Odom took it from there.
The two helped the Lakers go on a 12-2 run and stay within the Celtics with just minutes left. The task was easier as Davis left the game ion controversial style. The Lakers got as close to the Celtics as 1 point with just 2 minutes left in the game. Pierce scored on a running jumper to put Boston ahead 101-104. Odom then went to the hoop and missed an easy lay up.
Pierce then responded with a big three pointer with 1:18 left on the clock, the score 101-107. Bryant scored against Pierce one on one with a leaning fade away jump shot; cutting the lead to 4. Pierce was forced into a missed jumper by Luke Walton at the other end and Kwame Brown’s monster jam pushed the home team up 105-107 with just less than one minute left in the game. That was the closet the Lakers got as Paul Pierce’s clutch jumper went in despite the contact and the Lakers’ Bryant missed a desperate three point attempt at the other end as time expired.
“What a great finish,” Brown, whom scored 20 points said, “It would have been better if we had won.”
