EUROLEAGUE GAME 3: (FIRST HALF – cliffhanger effect)


CIBONA ZAGREB ( CROATIA ) – OLYMPIAKOS ( GREECE )



After a 2-0 start with both wins away and in difficult arenas to play, Olympiakos heads north to Croatia and the capital city of Zagreb, to face the national champions Cibona.

The Greeks started the contest playing excellent defense both inside and on the perimeter, denying the Croatians any open looks for their killer threes. With good ball movement on offense and patience in searching for the open man, Olympiakos got an early 2-7 lead, and kept it until mid-quarter. At that time, Cibona switched to a 2-3 zone defense, short-circuiting their opponents’ offensive flow and thus managing to cut the deficit to just 1 point, 11-12 with 2 minutes left. The last 2 minutes of the first quarter were a run-and-gun show, with three point bombs and fast breaks resulting in a tied score, 17-17, to end the period.


Sam Anurak had a good first quarter, with his all around performance helping keep Olympiakos close during the last 2 minutes…

The second period saw the home side showing more swagger and passion on both ends of the court, and proceeding to score a 9 – 2 run spearheaded by point guard and Marko Jaric – lookalike Popovic. Popovic had scored 15 points of his team’s 26 up until that point , and was a constant headache for Coach Gezus and his assistants. It took 3 straight three pointers by backup guard/forward Robert Pedrajas to even things up again. Despite the fact that the frontcourt duo of The X and Dweaver was still scoreless, Anurak and Pedrajas combined to bring their team marginally ahead to end the half, with a score of 36 – 37.




Thinks did not look good at the beginning of the second period, but Pedrajas’ killer threes at the end led Olympiakos back into the game…
