Lakers’ Season Opener Down to the Wire
Odom has breakthrough game, Bryant’s 41 not enough to win

2 Nov, Chicago – Tyson Chandler and Kirk Hinrich made sure that the Bulls would win their second straight game as they ran away with a three point win over the visiting LA Lakers. The Lakers couldn’t keep the momentum on their side at the very end of the game as they dropped an impressive 12 point lead with 4 minutes left in the match.
Tyson Chandler recorded 20 and 20, Kirk Hinrich shot his way to 33 points and 6 assists and Mike Sweetney added 17 and 12. The Lakers were led by Bryant’s 41 points and 8 assists and Lamar Odom’s 22, 8 and 10.
On the night where Lakers’ assistant coach Scottie Pippen saw his jersey number 33 retried, there were mixed feelings between the two sides. The grand reunion of all of the players who had played for the Bulls between the years of 1990-1998 may have sent shivers down the backs of the younger generation of players as the group were introduced pre-game.
“That was an impressive group of guys. I’m surprised that we got the whole bunch back,” Phil Jackson, who had coached most of the individuals stated, “Michael (Jordan), Scottie (Pippen ) and Horace (Grant) were all here. (It was) Truly amazing.” The only missing player was, predictably Dennis Rodman and his absence is still not explained. Steve Kerr joked, “He’s probably lying in a gutter somewhere.”
Lamar Odom seemed to get a jolt of energy from the presence of the former Bulls’ dynasty as he scored LA’s and the game’s first 7 points. The Lakers went on a 12-0 run after Aaron McKie’s block on Mike Sweetney energized the visitors. LA soon led 20-5 with 6 minutes left. However, they soon allowed the Bulls to come back and keep the game within reach as they battled back to make it 29-23 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lakers couldn’t keep up with Chicago as they seemed to move up a few gears in the second quarter. Kirk Hinrich made basket after basket and the Bulls’ big men seemed unstoppable on the glass. The highlight of the second quarter was when Tyson Chandler blocked Kobe Bryant’s shot and then dunked the ball on the other end thanks to Hinrich driving the ball the full length of the court. “That was a huge play for them (Chicago),” Kobe Bryant said, “We had no answer for them in that quarter.” The Bulls made up for their first quarter deficit and then went on a 9-0 run to take over the game.
During the halftime break, Scottie Pippen’s ceremony was undertaken as the future Hall-of-Famer spoke over the United Center’s PA system, “Thank you to Chicago for giving me so many memories over my career. The six rings were the best parts of my life and basketball career.” Michael Jordan was invited to thank his former counterpart and gave Pippen a high five before taking the microphone and saying into it, “I would like to thank Scottie for helping me win those championships. I guess we are like Batman and Robin hey Pip?” Lakers’ head coach Phil Jackson said, “It’s amazing that Scottie and I are working together for the Lakers. I consider myself lucky to have coached him because he was something very special. Thank you Scottie.”
After Pippen’s 33 was raised to the rafters, the game continued and LA seemed to have received the inspiration they were looking for as they started to heat up. Bryant scored 21 points in the third quarter including back to back three pointers in the final 2 minutes of the quarter. Odom seemed to have drawn off of his mentor’s past as he himself posted 12 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists in the third quarter. Bryant’s three pointer tied the game at 71 with about 8 minutes left in the third quarter and the Lakers’ full court press really put them ahead of the home side.
“The Lakers came back at us,” Scott Skiles, “MJ and Pip played for us, we should have been playing better but what can you do? I guess it’s only because Phil and Pip works for them now.” The Bulls had no answer for LA’s determined push as they went on a 20-0 run and took over the lead into the fourth period.
Los Angeles and Chicago came out of intermission to play a very slow paced game for a while before the Bulls turned the heat on and Kobe started to cool down. Jackson benched Bryant for a few minutes and Chicago went on a tear to get within 5 points of LA with just 3 minutes left to play. Bryant’s turnovers turned into a Bulls fast break and Lamar Odom had no choice but to foul with 1:58 left after Bryant made another errant pass. Chandler hit the one free throw and Pargo’s big three point dagger left LA demoralized.
“That was a big shot. We were down and suddenly tied. It was the bets feeling in the world,” Ben Gordon exclaimed after the game. With the game tied 114-114, the Bulls didn’t want to lose that feeling any time soon as they forced Bryant into two missed layups and let Chandler clean up the offensive glass as the 7’1” big man scored two put back dunks. LA had a chance to tie the game after Kwame Brown in the key scored with 24 seconds left and Hinrich missed a free throw. With 9 ticks left on the court, Bryant dribbled past a screen by Mihm and went for a three pointer over Chandler and Luol Deng’s outstretched arms. The shot hit the outside of the rim and the Bulls ran the clock out.
“It was a tough game,” Bryant said, “We lost to a better team though so I can’t complain.”
