Chicago (124) at LA Lakers (112)
Bulls overcome nineteen point deficit, win eighteenth in a row[
Boxscore ]
Kobe Bryant intentionally fouls Ben Gordon late in the gameThe Chicago Bulls have tied a franchise record with their eighteenth consecutive win, but it did not come easy. The defending champions trailed by as many as nineteen points in the first half before a furious third quarter rally led by Ben Gordon and Kyle Korver saw them take the lead and eke out a hard fought 124-112 road victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.
Gordon opened the game by hitting a three and it appeared as though the Bulls might have an early advantage as a couple of reach-in fouls had All-Star Lamar Odom taking a seat a little over two minutes into the game. Chicago were unable to take advantage however as they found themselves in a dogfight with the Lakers, who were 18-30 entering tonight's game. Strong offensive rebounding by the Lakers and defensive lapses by the Bulls saw the home team shoot 14/20 (70%) from the field and race out to a thirteen point lead by the end of the first quarter, much to the delight of the Staples Center crowd.
Things went from bad to worse for the Bulls in the second as they struggled to put points on the board while the Lakers scored off turnovers and second chance opportunities. Kwame Brown had an amazing first half with 26 points and 13 rebounds, scoring most of his points off his seven offensive boards. The Bulls found themselves down nineteen and struggling to make a dent in the deficit as they ultimately matched the Lakers' 37 second quarter points to cut the lead back to thirteen at the half.
After a slow start in the third, the Bulls began mounting a comeback. Gordon scored 10 points in the period while Kyle Korver, who had knocked down three three pointers in the second quarter, made four threes in the third and finished with 12 as Chicago slowly but surely clawed their way back into the game. Chicago shot 16/25 (64%) in the third quarter, outscoring Los Angeles and took an 89-88 lead on a dunk by Carlos Boozer, ultimately heading into the fourth quarter with a slim 94-90 lead.
Los Angeles rattled off four quick points to begin the fourth quarter to tie the game but Korver would give the Bulls the lead for good with a three pointer. Boozer then scored on a layup to extend the Bulls lead to five before Gordon returned to score 11 points in the quarter, as well as grabbing three rebounds and handing out four assists as the Bulls would go on to lead by as many as fifteen. Gordon finished with 39 points, five rebounds and 11 assists along with two steals. Kobe Bryant did his best to keep the Lakers in the game, scoring 12 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and at one point cutting the lead to seven, but Chicago would hold on and run the lead back out to twelve by the final buzzer.
"We should've won this game," a frustrated Bryant told reports after the game. "Give them a lot of credit. They showed a lot of heart, they brought it to us in the third and we didn't rise to the challenge. We had them, we didn't come through." After his stellar first half, Kwame Brown finished with a team high 30 points and 21 rebounds for the Lakers, while Bryant added three rebounds and four assists to his 28 points. Lamar Odom scored 14 points despite playing only 20 minutes due to foul trouble while Andrew Bynum had a double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Rookie Voshon Toure scored 13 points in 13 minutes including three three pointers, while Smush Parker handed out ten assists.
For the Bulls, Carlos Boozer had a double double with 24 points and 13 rebounds as well as handing out four assists. Kirk Hinrich scored 13 points and handed out nine assists, also making two steals. Kyle Korver finished with 30 points off the bench, making 8/15 from downtown while also dishing out three assists and making three steals.
Notes: Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom were both voted in as starters for the Western Conference while Andrew Bynum was selected to represent the Sophomores in the Rookie Challenge. Ben Gordon will be competing in the Slam Dunk Contest and Three Point Shootout...the Lakers prevailed 42-37 on the boards, outrebounding the Bulls 20-15 at the offensive end...Chicago were 13/18 from the free throw line, Los Angeles shot 9/10...the Lakers 19 point lead is the largest deficit the Bulls have overcome to win a game this season...four players registed double-doubles (Gordon and Boozer for Chicago, Brown and Bynum for Los Angeles).
Current Record: 41-5
Next Game: @ Cleveland Cavaliers; 24-22 (February 13th)
