I'm inclined to agree with A15. It'll be close for about the first half, and then the USA will pull away in the third.

I hope the same doesn't happen with China against Greece. China has a chance, if Wang has a good game (I'm already assured that Yao will have a great game).

Sat Aug 26, 2006 12:11 pm

It won't be easy though, A15 thinks it will be easy... i dont thnik so. I think Aussies will give em a rtun for their money.

And I know that China can beat Greece; we need Shipeng Wang to play good and the Guards to bring the ball up smart. I hope Greece don't paly a full court press.

Argentina bt NZ 79-62 :(

Better effort from the kiwi's, no one gave them a show in this game but they pushed argentina in the last quarter. Manu is too good though.

Btw im glad to see there is a good wbc thread, ive been lookin all over for one!!! All the rest are SHIT!

THE HAKA

Sat Aug 26, 2006 3:23 pm

Dont diss the haka :x

Sat Aug 26, 2006 3:39 pm

I think it's sorta weird.

Sat Aug 26, 2006 3:46 pm

You guys have obvously never seen an All Blacks rugby game, their haka is far better, far more intense and comes with throat-slitting guestures and the like. Really gets the team and the home crowd fired up. The Tall Blacks' haka is poffter in comparison.

Sat Aug 26, 2006 6:11 pm

The last 8 seconds of the game were really strange. And to go 0-5 from the line...wow, that's really bad.

Sat Aug 26, 2006 6:48 pm

Well, the small threat I called them turned into a win. Congratulations! (Y) But sorry, the road ends here for you! lol

And the haka man, dont disrespect it! Its a way to pump them up!!! Altho yeh... they dont look that meancing, put the All-Blacks there and I would be fucking scared lol (Altho ppl are calling the throat slitting really over the top)

oh yeah, nzspurs... u mean in this forum or on the net in general???

Eight-Finals Day One

Do or Die Baby!

Finally, the knockout stage is here! I bet all the players are pumped up and since two games have been played, I'm pretty pumped up!

Can't wait for China and Australia to play their games tomoz!

Unlucky for New Zealand who lost to a better team and cognrats to the Lithuanians who upset Italy. We all love upsets right? haha

Anyways... just a few random thoughts. Firstly on Coach Baldwin leaving the New Zealand National Team. As Pero said, they're losing a good coach who has taken them high in the past 6 years. In these 6 years, the Kiwis have surprised me in matching the Boomers. Beating us for the first time after the Sydney Olympics to make the 02 Worlds (Altho, maybe part of that was that we didn't have our usual team of Gaze and Co.)...

... I wouldn't know what impace Baldwin had on the team but the results to speak half the story. He must have done something good at least.

Well, maybe you other Kiwis can give me your thoughts on the resignation of the Coach and who might replace him!

Argentina v New Zealand 79-62

Sort of expected but the Kiwis did well to keep the Argentina team going till the fourth quarter. I didn't see the game but I assume that New Zealand did their fans proud in showing character and fought till the end.

Argentina didn't disappoint and pulled away with the win as they should have. They have a great team and I believe that Argentina (along with Spain) are the only two teams who can threaten the USA for that gold medal. And Manu Ginobili is just too good as someone else said!

Italy v Lithuania 68-71

Italy's success in the group stage made me forget how young the team was. I guess reality hit back hard as Italy misses a bunch of free throws to lose the game. As their Coach said, they only got themselves to blame. Well, inexperience of the Italians knocked them out and they were unlucky but i guess when you're on the world stage, it doesn't matter cause its really no mercy.

Congratulations to Lithuania who proved me wrong but I did say they posed a small threat. And I was ignorant of the fact that Italy needed a wild card to make this tournament. Stupid me!

Turkey v Slovenia 90-84

Turkey wins in a tight game which I missed. And it sounded like a really exciting game too... ah well. Erdogen sounded like he played a hell of a fourth quarter with 15 points and 4 free throws in the end. I didn't see much of it to be able to say much of it but Turkey certainly proved my prediction right lol

Spain v Serbia 87-75

I also didn't get to ctach this game. But seems like Darko had a good game with 18 and 15... he shot 9 for 23 so yeh, I wish he did make a few more of them of course! This was also the outcome I expected from this game so I can't say I'm not happy or anything. Pau Gasol led the team with 19 and 15.

EDIT1: Ok, Sopcast is oober blurry... laggy it stinks.. cant see the score but a Slovenia dude just foulled out...

EDIT2: I watched the finish of what must have been a good game.. Turkey won 90-84... so its pretty cool... Will read what happened in detail!

Ok, that's all I'm writing last night (its past 12 AM now!)... sorry if it was real boring but I didn't really have much to say. Not many of the games really interest me as much as my two main events later tonight!!!!

China v Greece... and Aus v USA... lets go!!!

Well, I don't think that Lithuania can't beat Spain(or Serbia), in this competition all teams are beatable, maybe one USA is a bit stronger than others teams, but if you work hard in defense and you have a little fortune you can beat even USA or Argentina. (Y)

Sat Aug 26, 2006 7:45 pm

Yeah i was meaning this forum.

As for coach baldwin: Yeah i'm sad to see him go; he has been an inspiration not only for the tall blacks but for basketball in new zealand as a whole. Not sure who's going to replace him...

Holy moly is anyone watching turkey vs slovinia? EVERYTHING is going in!!

Sat Aug 26, 2006 7:52 pm

Thanks lots nzspurs (Y) I hope u can give me feedback on my opinions too :P

Sat Aug 26, 2006 8:04 pm

Hot Shooting From Euro and Asian Players
Eastern Stars Down the Western Stars in All-Tourney Game

By WILL SIT, AP Writer
September 4, 2006

EAST: 36 - 45 - 33 - 49 - 163
WEST: 35 - 34 - 37 - 32 - 138

JAPAN (AP) -- The World Championships of basketball closed with the first ever All-tournament game between two squads comprised of the best talent available from the past tournament. 24 players laced their shoes for the final time before leaving Japan to return to their professional teams and the players didn’t disappoint the crowd.

The teams wore the jerseys of the American and Chinese national teams in honour of the two finalists. The starters were chosen by fans via a ballot and subsequent voting.

Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitzki, Boris Diaw, Tony Parker and Jose Calderon started and played in the red Chinese kit. The Western team wore white USA jerseys from 2004 and were led by Nene, Chris Bosh, Luis Scola, Manu Ginobili and Chris Paul.

The game was tightly contested from the start as the Western side got off to a hot start and led 13-2 in just under 3 minutes. The Eastern Stars began to chip back at their opponent’s lead thanks to the long range shooting of many players. The Eastern Stars took advantage of hot shooting from that point on and at one stage in the second quarter; they had sunk 7 consecutive shots and built a very sizable margin.

The second quarter’s end was an entertaining one as the West’s LeBron James came off the bench to have a scoring duel with the East’s Wei Liu. James scored 9 points and Wei scored 11, of his 21 first half points, in the final 3 minutes of the quarter. The Eastern Stars never looked back from that point on.

Yao Ming and his team looked sluggish in the third period but picked it up in the fourth quarter thanks to a barrage of three point shots. It was the hot shooting of the Eastern Stars that won them the game as the team scored 21 three points shots from 35 attempts.

Coach K of Team USA coached the East team and was very happy with his All-Tournament team’s players, “It was fun to direct this team. Everyone was professional and did their job and it was like having maybe 6 or 7 JJ Reddick’s on one team. It was great fun.” And when asked about what he said to the players before the game, “I just told them to have fun. The tournament is finished and it’s time to have fun.”

Yao Ming who led China to the silver medal maybe had some consolation as he wrapped up the tournament by adding additional hardware to his Golden Basketball Award, scoring title and All-Tournament First Team honours. Ming had 17 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks to take MVP honours for the All-tournament game. Yao talked about his awards, “It’s a great feeling and I feel that I have played my best basketball in my life at this tournament.”

The Eastern Stars were led by China’s PG Wei Liu who scored 26 points (6-10 from three point range) and had 5 assists off the bench. Germany’s Dirk Nowitzki had 19 points; Greece’s Nikos Chatzivrettas had 18, which included 4 treys, 5 and 4; Italy’s Gianluca Basile had 17 that included 3 treys; Tony Parker scored 15 points; Japan’s own Shunsuke Ito finished with 13, 10 and 5; France’s Boris Diaw added 11 points; and Greece’s Antonis Fotsis had 11, 8 and 5. The Eastern team was so stacked that Italy’s Giacomo Galanda’s 6 points and 7 assists were overlooked.

Chris Paul and Manu Ginobili led the Western Stars who also shared the ball proficiently on offence. Paul top scored for his team with 25 points while Ginobili had 22 points and 4 assists. Kirk Penney had 17 points from off the bench; Chris Bosh had 16 and 12, Andrea Nocioni had 14 points; and Luis Scola added 10 points. The Western Stars did well to limit the Eastern Stars from scoring inside with Nigeria’s Julius Nwuso leading the way with 4 blocked shots.

It wasn’t all good news as Spain’s Pau Gasol got injured minutes after stepping onto the court as a substitute. The Memphis Grizzlies player returned to the bench but did not play.

“I don’t want to send a star NBA player back to America injured,” Coach K said after the match.

The spectacular finish to the tournament capped off a brilliant three weeks of international basketball and was a testament to the wonderful hosts in Japan.

Alright Guys, that was my last Dynasty-related post! So I will retire the dynasty BUT I will keep posting about the World Championships till the end of the tourney.

Thanks for those who followed this dynasty!

What a spectacular finish of FIBA World Championship!

Wtf is Gasol doing with Marks?

And yeah, for sure, great Lithuania - Italy game 8-)

Sun Aug 27, 2006 11:06 am

Very nice finish to the FIBA WC! (y)

Sun Aug 27, 2006 11:24 am

we really lacked on the inside without Sean Marks in there....we won't be able to really compete with better sides until we get some bodies to man the paint....Bradshaw & Penney are nice foundations & will be fixtures for a long while, but we need more young blood coming through....more players hitting the US college scene....

And the haka man, dont disrespect it! Its a way to pump them up!!! Altho yeh... they dont look that meancing, put the All-Blacks there and I would be fucking scared lol (Altho ppl are calling the throat slitting really over the top)

not really, it's a Maori gesture at opening up the spirits from the heart or gut or something out....I don't know, someone else will have to clarify that for me....but it does have meaning unrelated to slitting someone's throat....but I could see how it looks that way....the second time they did it in Auckland test, they did the throat slit a little lower across top of chest because of all the media scrutiny....

guess WC's are over for NZ so I'm going to have to find a new thread....someone with Cedric Ceballos I'd say
