Part 5 – CAAAABLE GUYYYY!
At the end of the first full team practice, just as the players and coaches were huddling together for a final team cheer before the showers, the double doors to the practice courts opened, and in walked a medium-height, lean, and young looking player with a basketball under one arm and a gym back under the other.
“Ah, so he is here, we finally have a full NBA roster.” Montgomery thought to himself.
The young man set down his belongings at the bleachers and walked up the team. Everyone was staring at him, and 16 pairs of eyes were making him uncomfortable. There was an uncomfortable silence; apparently nobody was too impressed with the player showing up later than everyone else. Finally Sam Anurak and Jing Xu stepped forward to greet the new player, once that happened, everything warmed up and the new kid broke into a smile.

“Sup everyone? I’m Peter Robertson. Sorry about being late and everything to camp, I was in Antarctica helping some penguins and in Alaska meeting with a spiritual healer. Let’s see… I’m Canadian, never been to the states before, Oakland is probably the warmest place I’ve ever been, so hot here, how do you people stand it? I played all 5 positions in high school, my most comfortable position there was the small forward position. Nice to meet everyone.”
Everyone shook his hands, and all of a sudden there was a sense of togetherness among everyone. After practice ended everyone got loose and began interacting with each other. Xu and Sit went off to play a little one-on-one, the Chilean “Drex” and several of the Australian players, along with Desmond Jackson went to go check out the team’s locker room at the Arena, while the rest of the players went on a tour of the city, their first leisure time since arriving in the city.
From above the practice court, the owner and several investors, along with Montgomery and Mullin watched the players interact and bond.
“What do you guys think?” asked Montgomery. “They are like the youngest team in the history of the league and probably the most inexperienced. They seem to be making every bit of it, and that’ll probably push them to be better.”
“Well, I have to say, some of those players have got talent. I want to see that Desmond Jackson boy start, he has some great moves and his shot isn’t that bad too. That #6… ah yes, Ben Branch, he’ll start too with that guy who has the X on his forehead. I am not sure about Xu, he’s too small, I think we’ll start Anurak over him because Anurak is more fit. And we need a guard… how about that Sit character? We need someone egoistical and bold to lead the team.” The owner suggested.
“My goodness, why don’t you coach, you more or less predicted what I was going to suggest to you, which was those exact 5 for starting.” Mullin asked, astounded.
“Haha. Now, we need to introduce these players to the rest of Oakland and the world. I say the Sunday after we finish up training camp we head to the Arena and hold a in-team scrimmage. The players will get their first big exposure and the fans will get to see what they can possibly expect.” The owner suggested.
“Man, you are really on a roll today. What other great ideas do you have?”
“We’ll see… we’ll see.” Said the owner as he turned around and headed out the door.

guess I'm a target now
Jing don't worry, everyone who should know, does know what Ultimate is

I call it Frisbee meets Gridiron without the set plays or stoppages....you can't move when you have the frisbee, you have to get the frisbee into the other team's endzone via passing, etc, etc....
Sat Mar 18, 2006 6:09 am

Replacements Put On Great Show In Inter-Squad Game
By Jing Xu, Associated Press Writer
September 20, 2005
OAKLAND, CA (AP) – As training camp comes to a close, the teams are preparing for an inter-squad scrimmage, and the Golden State Warriors were no different. Only a week ago the Warriors organization saw their franchise flash before their eyes and had all of their players released. However due to the unwavering perseverance of GM Chris Mullin and head coach Mike Montgomery the Warriors managed to go around the world to find “replacement” players to stand in. During this past week the players have shown they deserve to the part of the NBA as they worked their asses as hard as any other team. On the last day of training camp it is customary for teams to hold scrimmages within the team for the fans, a demonstration to the fans the power and capabilities of the team.
This inter-squad game will be the first big public appearance by the new Warriors as the organization expects at least 20-30 thousand fans to attend, along with many local TV channels, including NBA TV. Although the fans and media seem to be somewhat enthusiastic, the big names in reporting and players are looking down upon the Warriors.
“This is a publicity stunt to raise money.” said ESPN Analyst Andre Aldridge. “What are they hoping to accomplish with this set of players? The majority of them are recent high school graduates and the foreign ones are playing low club level at best! I just can’t imagine that “center” Ben Branch going against Yao Ming, who’s got a good foot on him! Basically you take Earl Boykins, and multiply him by eight or nine, then divide the skill by half, and you’ll have these guys.
“Those guys are so small I could probably just lean and rest my shoulders on their heads. Puny Australians! Better not be bringing that tiny, weak, down-under shit in my house!” claimed Nuggets center Marcus Camby, who then proceeded to rest his arms on teammate Earl Boykin’s head. Boykins then proceeded to punch Camby in the guts, and gave this statement:
“Those Warriors, they may be called small or under talented or whatnot, but that don’t matter. Check me out, I’m small, but look what I have now. I am one of the best small men ever, and I brought Camby to his knees! Yo Warriors! Don’t let any of this shit bother you! Do what you gotta do, and if you can’t do nothing, punch them in the balls, I heard Shaq’s balls are mad weak, one hit and that fucker is down!”
Hours before the game the team was divided into teams of sixes. The three players on Injured Reserve were Andres Muñoz, Nicky Rasamoelina, and Peter Robertson. The three did not play because the coaching staff deemed their basketball skills to unworthy of showing off to the public yet… Robertson was just banned from playing so far because he was so late to training camp. However the three players were split up, with Rasamoelina and Robertson helping coach the white team with Montgomery while Muñoz helped with coaching and stat tracking on the blue team.
The teams were made up of six players on each side. The white team consisted of Ben Branch, Andreas Dahl, Cyriel Klitsie, Sam Anurak, Jing Xu, and Mikki Dela Rea. The blue team therefore was made of Andrew Watson, Robert Skrnjug, Desmond Jackson, Will Sit, Zac Mousoulis, and Mark Moore.
The game tipped off, and with a nearly ¾ capacity filled Arena and press from all over to cover this event, the Warriors put on their best show. The players seemed confident during the pre-game warm-ups as they didn’t hurt themselves and kept themselves loose. Well… the only incident that happened during pre-game was Xu and Dela Rea throwing Will Sit into the air for an alley-hoop, which got them a scolding from Montgomery.
The game started off slow as both teams struggled to score, putting some doubt into the fans. The reason probably was because both teams played lock-down defense against each other. Right off the first possession Mark Moore tried to go inside for a layup, but Ben Branch flew out of nowhere to block the shot. The first points were not scored until 1:23 into the quarter. Throughout the quarter Branch made it his game as he dominated his counterpart Andrew Watson. By the end of the quarter the white team led 23-17 with Branch scoring 6 points, grabbing 3 rebounds and amassing an incredible 4 blocks already.
As the second quarter began the blue team came alive and Will Sit penetrated the basket hard while Desmond Jackson showed his range. Sit scored 8 points on layups alone while Jackson hit two three-pointers and pulled the Blue team up by 3. Despite the shortness of the Warriors, they showed their hops. During one memorable play guard Jing Xu took the ball on the wing, crossed by Sit, and dunked on top of three blue players despite being only 5’8’’. The guard Sam Anurak also did his part for the White team as he went up and under for several acrobatic plays. The score at halftime was 39-35 in favor of the Blue team.
The halftime show was extremely interesting as it consisted of freestyle Frisbee, and amongst those were the Warrior’s very own Jing Xu. His wacky throws and amazing layout catches onto the hardwood awed many.
The second half was almost a reflection of the first half as Branch again took over the defensive end, blocking shots left and right. However the difference in this quarter for the White team was the coming of 5’5’’ guard Mikki Dela Rea. Dela Rea used his sneaky hands and blazing speed to come away with several key steals and breakaway layups to tie the game, especially late into the 4th.
The end of the game was something nobody could have expected. With 10 seconds left and the Blue team up by two, the White called for a pick and roll via Branch. When Branch came off setting the pick, the ball was lobbed to him, which he finished with an extremely hard alley-hoop dunk as the buzzer expired. The teams agreed, however to end the game there, which could not have been more perfect. Ending in a tie not only eliminates the winner-loser mentality, but also showed that each player is perfectly matched with each other and together they will play even better.
Final Score: 73-73

The NLSC Replacements are successful in there first preseason game.
By Sam Anurak, Associated Press Writer
March 19, 2006
ATLANTA, GA (AP) -- As the NLSC guys walked into the Phillips Arena for there first NBA preseason game it was a dream come to. To make it even more special, they won against the Atlanta Hawks.
It was a sold-out crowd in the Philips Arena to see their Atlanta Hawks go against the newly look Golden State Warriors and there new replacement players. Fans expected to see a fun and entertaining game. They also expected a blow out by this young ATL squad. But the replacements took there game to a new level and proved everyone they aren't here to be humiliated. They are here to show everyone their true talent.
It started with the Warriors leading the game and ending the game with a win. In this game, the young guns from the Warriors took over. The kid from Memphis, Desmond Jackson lead this team dropping 23 points and suprisingly grabbing 10 boards for his height. He wasn't the only one doing the contributing but the whole squad. Everyone at least had over 3 points.
After the game, Joe Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks spoke to the media and said, " These kids gave it all they got and I was shocked on how well they able to cope together quickly. Props to them. It was just preseason so we it was all fun and games.
As the final whistle of the game went, the whole team celebrated like they won a championship. Veteran of the team Andrew " The X " Watson said, " It was like a dream come true for all of us. We never expected to make it to this level but we did. " He a good first career game as well with 6 Points, 9 Rebounds, 3 Assists and a couple of assists and blocks.
It was even a dream come true to these guys as they stepped on an NBA court. Can they be the cinderella story for 2006 ?
