(Phoenix, Arizona)

Wow, what a week for the Raptors. They went 3-1 on the week, and winning on both of their road games. That's a good sign no doubt to Raptor fans. Last year, the Raptors were abysmal on the road. Hopefully they can carry that momentum into the West coast trip, visiting the Suns, Clippers, Kings and Warriors. All of them are over .500, so the Raptors will have a tough road trip, especially playing 4 games in 5 nights, both being back to backs.

We really have to talk about Chris Bosh now. On Saturday, Toronto fans got the pleasure of seeing the best game of Bosh's young career. He had career highs of 41 points and 7 blocks. He also hulled down 12 boards that game. Are you kidding me??? On the week, he's averaging 29.0 ppg, 9.5 rpg and 4, count it, 4 bpg this week. Definitely my NBA player of the week. No doubt. He's getting better with his defense as well, thanks to new assistant coach Alonzo Williamson. He's been working with Bosh for the past week on forcing his opponents to do things they don't normal do, or don't want to do. He held Raef LaFrentz in Boston to 10 points. 23.3 points off his season average. That's just tremendous. You have to give him his props.

Another player on the Raptors we've got to talk about is Mike James. This guy's classy. He's a class act. He's thought more of as a scorer than a creator, but this past week, he's average 12.8 ppg (similar to last year), but 10.0 apg. 10. He's also dished out a career high 16 assists in the victory against the Heat. That's like J-Kidd or Kid Canada. He's also leading the league in assists as well, with an average of 8.3. He's had a dramatic turnaround approach to his game. "Coach asked me to become more a playmaker this year: Get my teammates involved." said Mike James. "Unlike last season with Houston, I was like the first guy off the bench, so I was almost like instant energy. I'm a starter here in Toronto, so my role's a little different. Adjusting to my new role wasn't really too difficult. Sure, I enjoy scoring too, but I think with my assists, it spreads the floor more, and gets us more open shots and oppourtunities. We're winning as well, so I guess Coach's plans are working."

I also had a chance to talk with GM Rob Babcock briefly and asked him a few questions:

Chuck: Rob, how do you like the team right now?
Rob: We have some flaws in our game. The main one is rebounding, but overall, I think Sam's done a great job on his part. The chemistry's real great. I think we're surprising a lot of people.

Chuck: How's our draft picks (Roko Ukic and Uros Slokar) doing in Europe?
Rob: Oh they've been making fine progress. Roko's been playing great. He's leading the team with 16 ppg and 8 assists. He really controls the game. Uros' been solid. He's a great rebounder.

Chuck: Do you see any trade coming up to fix our rebounding problems??
Rob: We could. I mean, I won't pull the trigger just for the trade, but if the trade benefits us, then obviously, I'll trade for a rebounder.

Chuck: I know what's done is done, but do you have any regrets on the Vince Carter trade?
Rob: No, none at all. We got veteran influence in Eric and Aaron, and we got a great kid in the draft Joey. It also allowed our main guys now in Chris, Jalen and Mo more oppourtunities on offense. When Vince was here, he controlled the offense alot. Now I think it's more spread out. You see the results, especially in Chris.

Chuck: Alright thanks alot Rob.
Rob: No problem Chuck.

Notes from the Swirsk:
- Utah is getting off to a bad start: 2-11
- same with the Bobcats: 0-12
- The Jamaal Magloire trade to Milwaukee hasn't help the team. They're 3-8.
- Atlanta's surprising me. 4-6. Joe Johnson's playing at a high level : 21-6-5 along with 2.7 steals a game. Impressive. MIP Candiate for sure.
- Reggie Evans can play for me any day of the week. He's a beast. 12.5 boards a game??? Are u kidding me??
- This is wierd, but everyone except New York has a winning record in the Atlantic Division. The Raptors are on top as well.
- Kirk Hinrich's having a hell of a start. 22 ppg, 7 asp. Wow.
- On that note of the Chicago Bulls, what happened to Ben Gordon?? The guy's averaging 4.9 points!!
- Offseason microfracture surgery is really killing Amare Stoudimere. He's averaging 5.7 points. That's abysmal for his standards.

Chris Bosh and Mike James led the Raptors to a 3-1 week.

Always a Pleasure,

Week Preview

This week, the Raptors will have their hands full with 4 Western Conference teams, all of which are predicted to be in the playoffs come April 2006.

Image
The Phoenix Suns aren't the team they were last year, with the departures of Joe Johnson and Quentin Richardson. They've added toughness and defense with Kurt Thomas and Raja Bell. Amare Stoudimere is not 100%, after having offseason microfracture surgery, averaging only 8 points, but rebounding a career high 11.0 a game. He is nowhere near his allstar self, but look for him to give the Raptors some problems down low. Steve Nash is still running the show in Phoenix, meaning that he will still continue to push the ball, get teammates open looks. Keeping the Suns to a half court set will be a key factor in securing a W for the Toronto Raptors. Also, look for Bosh downlow. He's going to be guarded by Marion, and Bosh will have a size advantage over Shawn, although he is an great defender.

Image
The Clippers have dramatically improved from last year, with Elton Brand playing at a high level, and with a much more experienced backcourt of Mobley and Cassell. The Clippers, however are still missing the services of Corey Maggette and Shaun Livingston, both on the inactive list with their own injury problems. The Clippers are still 6-4 without them. Rebounding and good defense will be key for the Raptors as well. They also have to keep a hand in the face of Cuttino Mobley, who is a deadly outside shooter. Sam Cassell, although old, and in his final year of his contract, is still a great point guard. He will shoot alot of mid range jumpers, and find his teammates inside. Elton Brand, as always, is a load in the key. This is a great matchup, which will test Bosh's interior toughness, and also test Brand's quickness.

Image
The Kings have filled in holes that were created last year with the departure of Chris Webber and Doug Christie. The Kings have signed free agent Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who orginally was going to sign with the Nets, but a knee problem found in his physical made Nets president Rod Thorn think again, and the Kings signed him. He's an impact player, who will rebound the ball for the Kings along with front court mate Brad Miller, a two time allstar. The Raptors have to be careful of Mike Bibby and Peja Stojakovic, who can dial it from long distance. Bonzi Wells is a capable scorer as well, so look for a high scoring game. The Raptors must out hussle in rebounds, and get their big men into foul trouble. This may open up some oppourtunites for Bosh and if he can capitalize on the oppourtunity, Rafael Araujo.

Image
The Warriors have been rejuvenated with the addition of Baron Davis at the trade deadline last year, which turned the club around completely. Davis also has a hell of a backcourt mate in Jason Richardson, an amazing dunker and a good three point shooter. They also have veteran leadership in Derek Fisher. Fisher, brought over last year as a free agent, brings Finals experience and 3 championship rings to Golden State. In the 2004 finals, he hit a game winning shot with 0.4 seconds left in the game. The Raptors backcourt of James, Rose and sixth man Mo Pete will defintely have to step it up. The Warriors like to shoot alot of threes, so the Raptors have to keep a hand up at all times. They like to start from outside in, opposed to the Raptors inside out game. The Warriors front court is no pushover either, with Adonal Foyle, Troy Murphy and Mike Dunlevy. The Raptors will have to answer their three point game with a couple threes of their own and a strong front court offense.

Stoudimere is nowhere near his all-star self, but stuffed 2 of his 13 points with authority

Phoenix, Arizona (Ticker) - It was a high scoring and entertaining game, but the Raptors was the club that came out on top as they took a 124-121 victory over the Phoenix Suns. The Raptors overcame double digit scoring from the five Phoenix starters, with Nash leading the way with 32 points. Shawn Marion and Jim Jackson both had 21. Offseason acquisition Raja Bell had 18 and Amare Stoudimere, who had offseason microscopic surgery, contributed with 13.

The Raptors got another high scoring game from Chris Bosh, who carried over his career efforts from Sunday at home against Miami. He led 5 Raptors in double digit scoring with 34 points and grabbed 14 boards, also adding 2 steals and 3 blocked shots. Mike James scored a season high 26 and dished out 7 dimes. Jalen capped off a well rounded performance with 18 points, 4 boards and 4 assists. Mo Pete had 11 off the bench.

Coach Sam Mitchell was avaliable for comment, and he said "Anytime you play against the Phoenix Suns, they're going to score atleast 100 points. It's just their run and gun style. They will get their points no matter what kind of defense you play on them. The only way to really beat them is by outscoring them. We know that we can score. We've proven that almost every game we've played so far in the season. We also had a slight edge on the boards, so that contributed to the win." Amare Stoudimere was also avaliable for comment, and he was asked about his knee condition. "My knee's been better. There's still pain, but it's not at the point where I can't play basketball yet. Coach has been telling me to take it easy so far in practice and sit out a couple of games, but so far it's alright. I'm no where near the level I was playing at last year, but I'm making progress."

Toronto will know face the Clippers tommorow night at Staples Center.

Raptors Win 4th Straight

Mo Pete had an efficient night with 12 points and 4 boards off the bench, as the Raptors win their fourth straight

Los Angeles (Ticker) - Without looking at the team names, one would believe that an 8-4 record belongs to teams like New Jersey, Detroit, San Antonio or Dallas. The fact is that the Raptors own that record and they have reeled of 4 straight wins after an inconsistent first 8 games of the season. Chris Bosh established a new career high tonight in La-La Land with 8 blocks to go along with 28 points and 10 boards, narrowly missing his first career triple double. Charlie Villanueva, the 7th overall pick in the draft had 20 points off the bench.

The new look Clippers, now with a much more veteran backcourt of Cuttino Mobley and Sam Cassell, are among the leagues most improved teams. Coming in to this game, they had a winning record of 6-4. That backcourt combined tonight for 39 points, 10 assists and 4 steals. Elton Brand had another stellar performance with 26 points and 16 boards, but it was just not enough for the Clippers, who got outscored 34-24 in the final period. Corey Maggette and Shaun Livingston, vital pieces of this Clipper team, did not play as they're both on the inactive list, nursing injuries.

A big story for the Raptors tonight was the play of Rafael Araujo. Playing only 18 minutes in the ball game, he registered his first double figure digit game this season with 11 points. He also added 3 rebounds, and was perfect from the field. "He's getting better," said teammate Chris Bosh. "He's not your typical center that you can depend on to grab your key rebounds, he still get's beaten, but you can see his improvement from this year to last year." Many Raptor fans would like to send him to the Arkanas RimRockers, but if he continues to improve, he may avoid that trip and the wrath of Raptor fans.

After the game, Mike James was quoted saying in the locker room saying, "We got a good win tonight. We rallied in the fourth quarter and got the job done. Chris I thought was just amazing tonight. He got some big blocks and rebounds for us down the stretch. Mo and Jalen also helped us out with some huge three pointers, so it was a team win." Coach Mitchell, had several other comments as well. "I thought our bench played well, Charlie and Mo gave us a spark. We really do have to work on our rebounding though. We got destroyed on the boards: 42 - 23. We have to just box out our guy and get the rebound. Simple as that."

The Raptors have a day off, then pack to Sacramento where they face the Kings.

Raptors Winning Streak is Now at 5

Graham is making it known that he will posterize anybody that is between him and the basket

Sacramento, Nov. 25, 2005 (Ticker) - Don't look now, but the Raptors have reeled off 5 straight victories as the Sacramento Kings fall to the red hot Raptors 125 - 118. Chris Bosh once again led the Raptors with 27 points, 10 boards, 5 blocks and 2 assists. Mike James, who had an off night at Los Angeles, responded with an 18 points, 8 assists night. Brad Miller and Bonzi Wells led the way for the Kings with 22 points apiece.

The big story in this ball game was the bench. The Raptors reserves outscored the Kings reserves 51-25. Charlie Villanueva and Morris Peterson lead the way with 16 points and 15 points respectively. Seldom used reserves like Loren Woods and Aaron Williams also got in to the action, holding off the Kings big men. They each scored two points. Another reason why the Raptors won in this one was their perimeter defense. The Kings, with the likes of Mike Bibby and Peja Stojakic, shoot the three ball quite well. The Raptors held the Kings to 3-18 shooting from downtown while the Raptors themselves shot 7-19. Mike Bibby was held to 0-2 from downtown, Bonzi Wells was 1-7 and Peja was 2-6. Mo Pete himself was 3-5.

This is Toronto's third straight road win and they are 4-1 against the western conference this year. Sam Mitchell talked to the media about it, and he said, "We don't approach games as against the west or the east. We just want to win ball games. If we're 4-1 against the west, then that's a good start. We have to keep the momentum going for the rest of the 82 game season. We got a young team. Guys like Charlie, Joey, Jose; they're accustomed to playing shorter seasons. After about 30 games or so, that's when the real test begins for us. Young guys will start to feel the fatigue setting in, but right now, all we care about is making the playoffs despite being written off in the season previews, getting team chemistry going and winning ball games." Brad Miller of the Sacramento Kings, commented on how well the Raptors play of late and why they were able to beat the Kings tonight. "Team chemistry for them is a big thing. When you have guys that are very unselfish, make that extra pass to get that open lay up or shot, it's hard to defend against them. They simply out shot us from three tonight and they moved the ball. I also thought they defended our veteran backcourt and Peja really good. We couldn't get our outside bombs to drop."

The Raptors will try to make it 6 straight tommorow night in Oakland, where they play the Golden State Warriors.
