Nice win and top presentation! Are those box scores done through the stats tracker?

Thanks. And yup! The top performances is a screen capture straight from the tool, and the box scores were made by copying the box score data from NST and putting it through a spreadsheet I made.

Any time I reference player stats it'll probably be through the tool as well.

November 2nd, Season Opener

Postby Pitar on Wed Jan 30, 2013 4:22 pm

Sonics explode in 2nd Quarter, hold on to Win

November 2nd, 2013 46-59

Image
Brandon Jennings was superb in his SuperSonics debut, scoring 22 points, 8 assists, and hitting 4 of his 9 three point attempts.

It was a new NBA at KeyArena on Saturday night, as the recently renamed New Orleans Pelicans faced off with the relocated Kings--now Seattle SuperSonics. Brandon Jennings was key to the SuperSonics 110-103 victory over the Pelicans, and lead the team from an 8 point deficiency in the 1st quarter to a 13 point lead at the end of 2nd in a spectacular 42 point quarter. The Pelicans, who were coming off a road win against the Denver Nuggets last night, will be disappointed that they let themselves get dug so deep as they out-performed the Sonics in every other quarter.

The major difference between the teams was the Sonics' performance behind the arc, particularly the efforts of Brandon Jennings (4-9) and Trevor Ariza (3-5); and prolific drawing of fouls--something critics might attribute to the referees being swayed by the atmosphere of the buzzing Seattle stadium.

When Jennings came off the court he was replaced with an equally impressive performance in Toney Douglas, who posted 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in just 12 minutes of court time.

Eric Gordon had a particularly brilliant performance despite his team's loss, scoring 29 points and making 11/12 free throws on 17 field goal attempts, but failed to convert from 3 point range, missing all of his six attempts. The team's new front court duo of David Lee and Anthony Davis had a night to forget and it remains to be seen if the two can co-exist on offence.

I'm glad to see you make use of NST and enjoy it so much. Trust me, you have no idea how much analysis you'll be able to do with it as the season progresses, and I hope I'll be around to offer my tips. One thought, you might be able to do your own judging of performances by using the Metric Stats tabs in the Box Score window, and taking a look at the GmSc and GmScE (i.e. GmSc per 36 mins) columns. Game Score gives you a nice single value that determines the player's performance (it's used to determine the best performers as well), and Game Score Efficiency will let you know which players made best use of their minutes on the court, and which did too little compared to the time they were given. You did update to v1.6.2.4 right? There was a big bad bug in previous versions in the box score saving to the database method that I fixed in this latest version. Nothing to be afraid of if you never got an error when saving the database though, and if you've already updated to the latest version.

On your Association, really glad to see you start the season with a win. Can I be honest and be a bit more glad that the Iggy-era Pistons won over the Spurs? :P I might be following the Pistons a bit through your Association, but I'll do my best to support you as well. :P

I have been using that, even though I didn't reference it in my write up (which is pretty rushed, just wanted to get it out so I can get on with the rest of my league, might do monthly or half-month reports from now on). I wouldn't have noticed how ridiculously good Toney Douglas played if I hadn't see his game score efficiency. I'm a little conflicted about him playing so well because I want to develop Isaiah Thomas but he's just not going to get the minutes with Douglas on the bench as well. Decisions!

I'll be eyeing that game score for picking out recent top performances around the league too.

You're going to be very upset to hear that Andre Drummond is out with a broken back right now... Actually, I better do an injury report.

Damn! You're presentations are definitely better than mine! I copied you!

Anyways, great strong start for the season. Kinda laughing how the Pelicans and Sonics matched up for the first game.

BROKEN BACK?! ANDRE IS OUT WITH A BROKEN BACK?!?!?! MOTHERF...

But yeah, the Box Scores tab in Player Overview includes GmSc and all the player's stats from the game, so you can quickly cherry-pick best recent performances (or during any stretch by timeframing the data), and you could also use the Best Performances tab in Player Overview for a quick look

It was Seattle's team effort to go to the line that earned them the win, but the Phoenix Suns also had no answer for Brandon Jennings.
He arguably had his best NBA performance to date: 37 points, 10 assists. Since 1985 only 8 other players in the NBA have posted such numbers while making zero turn-overs.

52% from the floor, 46% from beyond the arc, then Robinson and Splitter with great rebounding numbers. Core group seems to be working well. On the other hand, the Suns' top performers were really efficient. Must've worked hard to win this one.

I couldn't say how many lead changes there were, but it was a real back-and-forward affair. Definitely a great game. (SEA gmsc 85.1, PHX 72.5)

Thanks again for everyone's interest. Team is doing surprisingly well! Jennings in particular, who I thought would be a liability... still remains to be seen!

Jason Ford has proven very reliable so far, will probably see more of him. Also, despite all the wins, there are a whole bunch of red flags. Our schedule has been kind & we're only winning by a tiny margin, largely thanks to some out-of-the-ordinary performances. This is reflected in our power ranking of 12th at the moment. But that's still huge!

Since I have to start being more careful about my time I'll be doing write ups more sparingly, but I've got the work-flow sorted for these boxscores and it's quick to throw them out. I'll go through the season games rather quickly (maybe write up the more important ones or just append the box scores with a notes section) and have quick NBA overviews at the end of each game week to show where everyone stands.

November 5th, Rudy Gay 7-man Trade

Postby Pitar on Sun Feb 03, 2013 12:56 am

Transaction Report

November 5th, 2013

Image Image Image

Grizzlies receive: '14 2nd Round Pick (Raptors), Ed Davis (Raptors), Tayshaun Prince (Pistons), Austin Daye (Pistons)

Image Image Image

Raptors receive: Rudy Gay (Grizzlies), Hamed Haddadi (Grizzlies)

Image Image

Pistons receive: Landry Fields (Raptors), Andrea Bargnani (Raptors)

Image Image

Projected starting line-ups:
Grizzlies: Michael Conley, Gary Neal, Tayshaun Prince, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol

Raptors: Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Amir Johnson, Jonas Valanciunas

Pistons: Brandon Knight, Rodney Stuckey, Andre Iguodala, Andrea Bargnani, Greg Monroe

Seven-man trade sends Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors

November 5th, 2013

Image

The Memphis Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors looked to make this trade the previous season, but weren't able to find a third party capable of freeing enough space in Toronto for Rudy Gay's $17M+ p/yr contract.

    • The Grizzlies free some desperately needed cap-space while receiving a promising young player in Ed Davis.
    • The Toronto Raptors take a gamble on All-Star Rudy Gay while losing a potentially bad contract in Andrea Bargnani.
    • The Detroit Pistons soak up a pricey contract in Bargnani (1yr/10.75M plus 1yr player's option) in order to retain some depth in the front court while Andre Drummond recovers from back injury. Fields will add considerable depth off the bench.

Note: Even though it's a year late I had to put Gay in the Raptors! The trade is the same except for the players moving from Toronto--the Raptors had already resigned Calderon for dirt-cheap so this was the only way I could make it work and still kinda make sense.

Kobe Bryant was unable to find his stroke tonight, partly due to a brilliant defensive performance by Trevor Ariza.
For the first time since 2010 Kobe Bryant was held to single digits while playing over 30 minutes.
Lakers fans might find some encouragement in the recent performances of 48th pick Trey Burke, who has surprised everyone by taking a starting role this season.

21-9-6 out of the 48th pick? What the what?!

By the way, I'm really looking forward to seeing what other features of NST you use as your Association progresses. Best Performers and Box Scores are only scratching the surface, but I'm sure you've already taken a look around. I'm not saying just to tout my own horn, I would actually love to know how others use the tool, which features are popular, what's missing, what could use some more work, etc.

I'm as confused as you are!

(his overall is 64)

Re: NST, I use it a lot more than just what I put up here. I like using it to make GM decisions rather than going by the player ratings in game. I'll also be using it to quickly put together league leader tables and players of the week etc. once I get to that, thanks to being able to just copy and paste the data. As for advanced stat analysis, I'll probably only use that feature for doing write-ups. I've been using the game finder from basketball reference a fair bit for providing context with stats, and I imagine I'll be doing the same with NST once I have a much larger catalogue of boxscores to draw from.

One feature I've been wanting, but I'm not sure how feasible it is (really depends on what REDitor can access), is game milestones appended to boxscores. At the moment it's a little bit of a chore to check these things and I'm likely to miss player milestones or team records etc. being broken as the season goes on.
Career milestones would also be appropriate for both the boxscores and the match-up preview (such-and-such only needs 5 more points before reaching 10000 points, etc.)
