BLAZERS HIRE NEIL OLSHEY AS NEW GENERAL MANAGER; INTRODUCES PORTER
May 5, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Trail Blazers have hired former Los Angeles Clippers general manager Neil Olshey to serve in the same
role with Portland.
The announcement by the Blazers on Monday came less than an hour after the Clippers revealed that they and Olshey had decided
to part ways.
Last season, Olshey oversaw a major retooling of the Clippers that included acquiring All-Star point guard Chris Paul, as part of the
biggest trade in franchise history. Olshey also signed All-Stars Caron Butler and Chauncey Billups, and re-signed DeAndre Jordan.
The Clippers finished 39-43 to clinch the eighth seed in playoffs until being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in first round.
The Blazers have been operating under interim GM Chad Buchanan for the past year. Buchanan, the team's director of college scouting,
took over when the team fired Rich Cho after about 10 months on the job.
Olshey becomes the 10th general manager in Blazers history.
The Blazers also announced the signing of Justine Porter as their assistant GM. Porter is a young promising executive who had stint with
the Oklahoma City Thunder two years ago also as their assistant GM, next to Sam Presti.

Congrats on Rose and the Bulls for their playoff run going much smoother than it did in real life and for Mr. Porter on his new employment.

Thanks man. What really weird is, Noah was named as the MVP, despite of poor numbers, and I can't accept it so I still give Rose the honors

It must be Rose's absence in second round because of an injury.

ERIK SPOELSTRA GETS NEW CONTRACT

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra received a contract extension today, the management announced.
A league source said the deal adds one to Spoelstra's contract to carry him through the 2013-14 season, the same time frame
as the Heat's stars, all of whom have opt-outs in their deals after that season.
Spoelstra, 41, is 199-129 in four years as the Heat coach, in his helm, the Heat failed to return to the NBA Finals this season
because of an injury that sidelined superstar LeBron James.
“We have one of the great young coaches in the league and he is an absolute member of this family,” team president Pat Riley said.
“He's the perfect coach for this team now. The reason why we did it was to extend him and keep him in the family and not have
somebody come steal him away from us.”

No. 9 overall draft pick this year.

J.R. SMITH DECLINES PLAYER OPTION

The New York Knicks say J.R. Smith has declined his second-year contract option and will become a free agent.
Smith had a $2.4 million option for this upcoming season, but declined to exercise it because he believed it undermined his true value.
The Knicks could still re-sign the guard, who averaged 13.3 points last season, when he becomes a free agent on July 1. He could earn
slightly more by signing a new deal with the Knicks.
He clearly stated he intends to re-sign with the Knicks. “Without a doubt, hands down, I wouldn’t want to play anywhere else. It’s the
greatest place to play. It’s the greatest city in the world. This is my ultimate home.” Smith said.
Smith joined the Knicks in February after playing in China during the lockout.

BLAZERS EXTEND QUALIFYING OFFER TO NICOLAS BATUM

The Portland Trail Blazers announced that the team had issued a qualifying offer to forward Nicolas Batum, making the 23-year-old Frenchman
a restricted free agent come July 1.
The Blazers opted not to extend Batum before the January deadline as they worked through a roster logjam at his position. Portland wound up
moving forward Gerald Wallace at the trade deadline, allowing Batum to move back into a starting role permanently. He went on to average
11.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.2 blocks in 31.0 minutes. Known as a two-way player, Batum is adept at knocking down
the spot-up three, shooting 35.0 percent from deep on the season.
Portland's new general manager Neil Olshey says the team will match any offers for Batum. As for Batum himself, he said that he was "99 percent"
certain he would be back with the Blazers next season.

Nice to see Nash reunited with Nowitzki

Randolph seems a bit overpaid though, but maybe he will get more minutes in Dallas.
And congrats to Anthony Davis!

Hey man, thanks for dropping by. I certainly love it. Nash and Nowitzki playing together again. As for Randolph, let's see if he can live up to that contract. We got really lucky in that lottery.

The Clippers originally acquired Chauncey on an amnesty claim from the New York Knicks. Billups played
as a sixth man for the Clippers last year and averaged about 12 points per outing, and 3.4 assists.
Chauncey indicated early on that he wanted to stay with the Clippers and wants to be a part of the
rising organization.

WOLVES SIGN BRANDON ROY TO TWO-YEAR DEAL OUT OF RETIREMENT

The Minnesota Timberwolves signed free-agent guard Brandon Roy with hopes to rejuvenate his career.
They agreed to a two-year deal worth $ 11 million.
Roy, a three-time All-Star, announced his retirement last season after five seasons with Portland because of
chronic knee problems. The Blazers used the amnesty clause on the remaining $63 million of his deal to make him
an unrestricted free agent. After sitting out the lockout-condensed season, Roy wants to try and resume his
once promising NBA career.
The 27-year-old Roy has averaged 19 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 321 games. He was the No. 6 overall
pick in the 2006 draft by the Timberwolves but was traded to Portland for Randy Foye on draft night.

DERON WILLIAMS RE-SIGN WITH BROOKLYN NETS

The most coveted prize of this year's free agency is now off the market.
The Brooklyn Nets have re-signed three-time NBA All-Star guard Deron Williams. Williams would be
signing a five-year, $ 92 million deal with the team, apparently choosing the relocating franchise over
a Dallas Mavericks team that both won the 2011 NBA championship and plays near in Williams' home town.
Williams appeared in 61 games with the Nets in 2011-12, and averaged 19.1 points, 2.6 rebounds,
7.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 33.2 minutes.

SUNS SIGN GORDON AND DRAGIC

The Phoenix Suns, moving quickly after losing face of the franchise Steve Nash, have reached terms on a
contract with point guard Goran Dragic.
Suns and Dragic agreed on a three-year, $ 26 million contract.
Dragic, 26, spent his first 2-plus seasons in the NBA backing up Nash in Phoenix before he was traded by the
Suns to the Houston Rockets along with a first-round pick for guard Aaron Brooks at the 2011 trade deadline.
Dragic remained as a backup with the Rockets, playing behind guard Kyle Lowry, he averaged 10.6 points and
3.8 assists in 21 minutes. He refused to sign with the Rockets again to look for a team that can offer him a
starting spot. Dragic was courted by teams like Portland, Dallas, and Sacramento.
On a separate deal, the Suns also reached an agreement with restricted guard Eric Gordon of the New Orleans
Hornets, who refused to match the Suns' offer.
Gordon will sign a four-year, worth $ 50 million deal with the Suns.
Gordon, 23, averaged a team-high 22.3 points, 3.1 assists and 1.6 steals in 33 minutes for the Hornets last season.
The Hornets acquired Gordon shortly before last season in a multiplayer trade that sent All-Star point guard
Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers.
In four seasons in the NBA, Gordon has never averaged fewer than the 16.1 points per game he scored as a rookie.

GREEN, CELTICS, AGREES ON A DEAL

The Boston Celtics have re-signed forward Jeff Green.
Green missed all of last season after a physical exam revealed an aortic aneurysm. He underwent surgery and became a
free agent before the Celtics decided to re-sign him.
The 6-foot-9 Green had been expected to play a key role as a backup forward last season and is being counted on to do
that next season. The Celtics obtained him from Oklahoma City Thunder in February 2011 with center Nenad Krstic
and a first-round draft pick from the Los Angeles Clippers for center Kendrick Perkins and guard Nate Robinson.
In 2010-11, Green averaged 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 32.4 minutes. For his four-year career, the former Georgetown
player has averaged 13.9 points and 5.5 rebounds.

Interesting decision to hold on to Felton, but it will definitely help if you're in win-now mode. Hope you can retain Batum as well.

I like the mix of roster that mirror reality but I also like some of the more hypothetical trade scenarios such as Gordon actually signing with Phoenix. I can't wait for this season to start.
