Re: Montreal Monarchs - Balls to the Wall in Montreal

How did Wall drop to 3rd? Wow.

Like your roster. (Y) Bucks trade Jennings for Ariza?? WTF, though Jennings-Evans backcourt rocks.

Also, nice to see you back. :)

Wall is only third? :o

Re: Montreal Monarchs - Balls to the Wall in Montreal

Wall to 3rd was a total shock to me. I was planning on grabbing Cousins and trying to run him at the 4 next to Okur and Outlaw in the front court, and keeping the rest of my roster mostly intact. But Wall fell to me, how could I pass him up?

Lamrock, Bayless will be seeing TONS of time at the 2. Him and Wall in the back court together will be nuts. And I'm planning on running lots of small-ball lineups with Outlaw at the 4 and maybe even Lawal or Warrick at the 5. Fuck defense, we're just gonna run the ball down your throat all game long.

Martti, the thing that makes the Jennings trade even stranger for Milwaukee is that they then passed on John Wall in the draft. EDIT: Oh wait, I guess they didn't. But Sacremento did proceed to sign Raymond Felton to start in front of Jennings for some reason.

MAJOR FUCK UP IN DRAFT REPORTING

Woah. Somehow I totally messed up where the top 5 picks landed. Actually, I know how I did it. I had written down the draft lottery order, and then wrote the players names on that list. So, here is a revised version of the top 5 picks (previous post will be edited):
    1. NJN - Derrick Favors
    2. DET - Evan Turner
    3. MTL - John Wall
    4. MIL - Greg Monroe
    5. CHI - Wesley Johnson

Wow, how long did it take you to type all of this out? :P

Kudos man, this is dedication. Mad respect.

That Knicks squad may be the worst of all time!

Rockets did very well getting Boozer, G-Force and Rip. (Y)

Sit, thanks man. It actually didn't take too long. Copy+paste saved me, though.

Lamrock, those Knicks are awful. Lots of cap space though!

Matti, the Rockets owned that offseason. Hell, their bench (Lowry-Brewer-Battier-Landry-Scola) is an almost decent starting 5, and certainly better than those Knicks. Looking forward to seeing them in action this season.

Preseason games coming soon. I'm playing all of them just to finalize my sliders before the start of the regular season, and to get a handle on how I want my rotation. Getting really good results and nice looking gameplay already, though.

Just look at that Kings backcourt. Felton, Kevin Martin, Tyreke and Jennings, and Tyreke at SF. Crazy

HOLY CRAP! Montreal's got a squad  I WISH man! love MTL in general; though the city's got generations of hockey coursing through its blood real thick, i could see a growing NBA fan base (but it would never overtake hockey)

going to have to read this in its entirety when i've more time later but props to what looks to be an exceptional start (Y)

The powerhouse Denver Nuggets spoiled the Montreal fans first look at rookie sensation John Wall in a blowout victory. Wall himself played a solid, if unspectacular, game but the Monarchs simply couldn't contend with a team that finished number 1 in last season's standings.

"Not a good way to start things off, I suppose," said new Montreal head coach Frederick Montgomery.

"They just beat us in every way, every statistical category, I think. And their bench just killed us. 42 points from their bench players.

They got it done. We didn't."

Montgomery couldn't have been more accurate. Right from the tip, the Nuggets controlled every aspect of the game, never once letting the Monarchs any spark in their play. Chauncey Billups, who finished with 21 points, seemed intent on teaching Wall a thing or two about NBA basketball. He stifled Wall defensively, and on the other side torched the rookie a handful of times, scoring off post ups, from downtown, or with the drive. Billups 21 came on a very economical 7/10.

"I wasn't thinking like that, no," said Billups when asked if he was purposefully going at the rookie. "I was just trying to play my game, stick to the team concept, and I saw some opportunities.

This team is too talented for guys to be thinking like that."

Wall, for his part, seemed unfazed.

"One game, one game," he said, "it's just one game. Chauncey's a good player, but I know some of his tricks now, so we'll see next time."

The Monarchs did get within 37-30 in 2nd quarter on the strength of a personal 6-0 run by Wall (who, it should be noted, was at the time being guarded by Ty Lawson), but the Nuggets responded to take a 51-38 lead into the half.

In the 3rd quarter, JR Smith caught fire, draining 4 three-pointers on his way to 18 of his game-high 24 points. Smith's offensive onslaught helped put the game out of reach. His final 3 of the quarter came 4 second before the buzzer, putting Denver up by 23 points.

OCT. 15 - MONARCHS BOUNCE BACK, ROUT HAPLESS BUCKS

MTL - 31 22 32 40 - 125
MIL - 34 25 14 28 - 101

The Monarchs somewhat redeemed their dismal performance against Denver in the preseason opener by dominating the Milwaukee Bucks two nights later. Down 59-53 at half, Montreal seized control in the 3rd quarter and never looked back.

The Monarchs dominated the whole second half, outscoring Milwaukee 72-42 over the final 24 minutes of the game.

"I'm really pleased with how we came out looking to attack in the second half," said Montreal coach Frederick Montgomery.

John Wall, to me, was the reason we were able to push the tempo and play with the aggressiveness we want," he continued. "Just a great game for John, not only offensively, but on defense as well."

Wall did have a magnificent performance, racking up 20 pts, 9 ast, 4 reb, 3 stl, and 3 blk. Travis Outlaw led all scorers with 28, many of those off sweet passes from Wall.

"Great game for the rook tonight," Outlaw said of Wall's performance. "We know he's gonna be good, this is just the beginning."

Milwaukee was paced by Michael Redd's 20 points, while rookie big man Greg Monroe chipped in 11 in just 16 minutes, shooting 5/7 from the floor. Trevor Ariza, meanwhile, struggled mightily on his new team, and looked far from comfortable in the offense, shooting just 2/7 (most of those forced and awkward) on his way to 5 points.

OCT. 18 - MONARCHS RALLY IN 4TH, BEAT KNICKS

MTL - 19 24 29 31 - 103
NYK - 26 25 27 20 - 98

With the game on the line, rookie John Wall came up with his first of what should be many clutch performances.

After a furious 4th quarter rally which saw the Monarchs take their first lead of the game, 95-94, with under 2 minutes to play, New York forward Danilo Gallinari nailed a baseline jumper from 17 feet to retake the lead. That's when John Wall took over. Wall scored the next 6 points for Montreal, first picking Nate Robinson's pocket and going in alone for the layup, then drawing a foul in close, and finally capping off the comeback with a beautiful 19 foot pull up jump shot which found nothing but net.

"He's just so fast, and so strong, there's not much you can do," said Knick's point guard Chris Duhon following the game.

Indeed, on this night Wall did look a step ahead of everyone else, but he didn't pull out the win by himself. Jerryd Bayless led the charge at the start of the 4th quarter, drawing 2 quick fouls and hitting all 4 free throws to spark a 12-3 Monarchs run.

Mehmet Okur also played big down the stretch, hitting a big 3 in the 4th to pull Montreal within 5. He finished with 25 points.

The first three quarters were the Wilson Chandler show. With Nate Robinson struggling to find the basket through most of the game, Chandler stepped up his play, scoring 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists in an impressive all-around performance.

Monarchs guard Aaron Afflalo twisted his ankle midway through the 3rd quarter and did not return. He will be re-evaluated on a day-to-day basis and should be fully healed within a week.

OCT. 19 - WALL DOMINANT IN MONARCHS VICOTRY

MTL - 33 24 31 19 - 107
PHX - 19 24 26 25 - 94

For the last couple of years pundits have been wondering whether this is the year Steve Nash finally slows down. John Wall made it look like this might be the year.

Wall's very impressive stat line - 31 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds - actually understates the dominance of his performance and his impact on the game. For starters, Wall got to the line an impressive 18 times, but made only 11 of his attempts. Almost all of those attempts were the result of Wall spinning Nash in circles and waltzing alone into the paint. In fact, the Monarchs spent much of the game uncharacteristically isolating Wall against Nash, especially in key moments. Offensive sets only came in when Montreal was playing with a big lead.

"Well, it was just working so well, I thought we'd see how far we could take it," said Monarchs coach Frederick Montgomery. "Normally, I don't think you'd see us play like, but Steve Nash just couldn't stop John Wall."

"Well, I just know I should have hit those free throws," said Wall. "Coulda had like 35, 36 points. But 31's good. I'll take 31 and a win," he laughed.

The feeling in the Phoenix room wasn't quite so jovial.

"Terrible game for us," said Amar'e Stoudemire, who scored 29 points, but required 28 shots to get there. "I played poorly, missed some shots, had some calls go against me that I think were...well, you can't blame the officials. We just didn't bring it like we had to bring it."

I don't think anyone would argue that last statement. Montreal stormed out to 16-4 lead to start the game, while the Suns looked absolutely listless and disinterested. Free agent acquisition Ray Allen missed all 5 of his attempts from behind the arc, while his back up, Leandro Barbosa, shot a woeful 2/11, missing all 4 his looks from downtown.

Jerryd Bayless played well for the visiting Monarchs, notching 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Mehemet Okur provided 17 points and 13 rebounds.

After getting blown out in the opener, you're dominating pre-season. Wall should be a superstar in this story. Great recaps and wins. (Y)

I wouldn't say we're dominating. Barely beat a historically inept Knicks team, simmed the Bucks game, but I did take it to Phoenix. Thanks for the props, though. Exciting rematch with Denver in the 2nd part.

Just read in its entirety (finally) on this lazy Sat morning - great stuff! (Y)

A few things: just now stopped laughing about the Jennings for Ariza trade… stoked you re-signed Morrow… also, from the opening post, "according to the press release the league as a whole lost 'approximately $350 million' in the 08-09 season" - doesn't MJ make that much just going to the toilet? :P … lastly, Okur's been ballin' - it's gotta be the Poutine!

Anyway, looking fwd to the rematch v. Billups and Denver now that Wall's found his groove

Wasn't $350 million what David Stern said the league lost collectively this year? I may be totally wrong, but that's where I got that number from. And yeah, Jennings for Ariza was absurd, especially considering Milwaukee then went out and signed CJ Watson to start, and Mbah a Moute is pretty much the player Ariza should be anyway. Thanks for reading.

OCT. 23 - NUGGETS EDGE MONARCHS IN BACK-AND-FORTH AFFAIR

MTL - 18 29 25 33 - 105
DEN - 22 21 33 34 - 110

Chauncey Billups is, to use a tired cliche, a man who knows how to win. With the game on the line at the end of the 4th quarter, Billups single-handedly carried his Nuggets past the surprising Montreal Monarchs.

It's just preseason, one might argue, but as Billups knows, excellence is a habit.

"You have to have that (winning) mindset right from the beginning of the season," he said. "You have to treat every game, every possession, like it's important, 'cause then when you get to those big time moments, you know you're ready. So it might just be preseason, but we need to be executing all the time so we're ready in May and June."

It's a lesson that's certainly not lost on these Nuggets. After finishing with last season's best record, Denver fell short in the playoffs, losing in the conference finals to the eventual champs for the second consecutive year, again showing off their characteristic inconsistency throughout the game.

After Mehmet Okur scored the games first 5 points the Nuggets turned up the intensity, going on a 16-2 sparked by Carmelo Anthony's 8 first quarter points. They took their foot off the gas over the last 4 minutes of the quarter, though, as Montreal rallied off an 11-6 run of their own to pull within 22-18 at the break.

The Monarchs managed to carry their momentum over to the 2nd quarter, outscoring Denver 29-21 to take a 47-43 lead into halftime, despite Okur picking his 3rd foul of the game. John Wall dominated the 2nd quarter, scoring 15 of 21 first-half points. He finished with a game high 43, on 15-for-25 shooting. Aaron Afflalo was also key to the Monarchs second quarter success, but largely at the defensive end, where he held Carmelo Anthony to just 6 points on 3-for-8 from the field.

Denver would then open the second half on a 8-4 run, due largely to a series of careless turnovers by the Monarchs, tying the game at 51. Montreal head coach Frederick Montgomery then called for a 2-3 zone, and the game completely changed.

"It just felt like the right call," Montgomery said. "It's not like they had been struggling from outside throughout the game, I just wanted to see if their back court could beat us by shooting over the zone."

For a while, Denver's back court could not beat them. With Billups on the bench, Allen Iverson and JR Smith proved incapable of either making or passing up shots. Denver was held scoreless on 4 straight possessions against the zone, while the Monarchs built a 66-54 lead. Incensed at his team's lack of discipline, Denver coach Jesse Harrington called a timeout and re-inserted Chauncey Billups. Billups promptly nailed a 3-pointer against Montreal's zone, igniting a 15-3 by Denver to tie the game 69-69. Denver would take a 76-72 lead at the end of the third.

The Monarchs returned to man-to-man defense to open the 4th, and were rewarded with 2 quick steals leading to and easy 4 points. With the scored tied at 80-80, Aaron Afflalo scored five straight points, followed by a fast break dunk by Hakim Warrick, to take an 87-80 lead.

Montreal would push their 4th quarter lead as high as 11, until Carmelo Anthony unexpectedly hit back-to-back corner three's, bringing the Nuggets within 5 points. The teams would go back and forth, with Denver closing the gap to three, 99-96, with under 3 minutes left to play. That's when Chauncey Billups took over. After having his layup attempt swatted from behind by Afflalo to preserve Montreal's 3-point lead, Billups raced back on defense to intercept John Wall's entry pass, then took in end-to-end, drawing an and-1 to tie the game.

John Wall came right back at Billups on the next play, running him off a viscous Travis Outlaw screen. The Nuggets, however, switched the screen, leaving Anthony to guard Wall. Wall calmly pulled the ball back out, waved off his teammates, then executed a beautiful crossover, freezing Carmelo in his tracks and allowing Wall to get to the basket for an and-1 of his own. This only seemed to further motivate Billups. As he walked the ball the 3-point line, Billups calmly and without hesitation drilled a dagger of 3-pointer, again promptly tying the game, 102-102. But he wasn't done yet.

Chauncey then produced another steal, stripping Wall cleanly on the drive, and fired a hail-Mary pass upcourt to a streaking JR Smith for a thunderous tomohawk slam. Denver takes a 2 point lead, 104-102.

After a missed jumper from Travis Outlaw, Billups nailed a tough runner in the paint over Hakim Warrick to put Denver up 4, and seal the win for Denver. Anthony Morrow would hit a desperation 3-pointer with 9 seconds left in the game, but Denver hit their free throws to take the win.

OCT. 26 - MONARCHS CAN'T STOP MAVS, TERRY IN PRESEASON FINALE

DAL - 25 27 36 25 - 113
MTL - 29 19 26 35 - 109

A furious 4th quarter rally by the Monarchs was not enough to overcome Jason Terry's 46-point outburst, despite holding Dirk Nowitzki to just 13.

Terry was a handful from the start, scoring 19 first-half points, while doing much of his damage from behind the arc where he finished 8-11. No matter who Montreal defended him with, Terry found a way to score.

"Jet was just incredible tonight," a tired-looking Nowitzki said following the game. "I couldn't get much going offensively, and (Terry) carried us to a big win for us."

It was a big win for the Mavericks, who had been struggling mightily throughout preseason, coming in with just a 1-6 record, due to largely to Josh Howard still being sidelined with a torn patellar tendon.

John Wall helped Montreal get out to an early 11-4 lead, scoring 10 points in the 1st quarter to go along with 4 assists. Dallas seemed to figure out how to neutralize him from the 2nd quarter on, as he scored just 11 points and 5 assists over the final 36 minutes of action.

"I don't know, I think I was just missing shots," said Wall. "I can't score 40 every night, you know."

Mehmet Okur continued his strong preseason play for the Monarchs, notching a 22/14 double-double, while Travis Outlaw chipped in 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Dallas was led by Jason Terry's 46, while getting a strong contribution from Shawn Marion, who scored 20 points on 10-of-11 shooting.

Megarover - Wall is just kicking ass. That 43-point game was a joy.

Thierry - thanks man. I'm actually growing fond of my jerseys, I just wish I had a good enough graphics card to run the game at a setting that would actually show the logo.

Alejandrov - Suns seem pretty low to me, too. If they struggle too much I might edit J-Rich back to SG and have him be their 6th man and start Hill at SF. Or maybe Amar'e to center.

How did you make it so the logos aren't on the jerseys? Jerseys look nice (almost as nice as the ones i concocted for my Bullets association) though I'm not so sure about the color scheme. Better than Minnesota's though!

Keep it up man. This is still great!
